WHO: Jessica Hamby and Dracula
WHAT: Getting dinner.
WHEN: Around 11PM January 14th.
WHERE: The seediest part of town they can find.
WARNINGS: There will be blood. But no dead people.

Jessica wasn't really all that used to having to not live off of TruBlood. Really, she was torn about if she liked the idea of not having to drink it all the time or not. On the one hand, no more dinner that tastes like ass. On the other? She didn't want to be a vampire, therefor she didn't want to always have to bite people for dinner. What she wanted was to be a normal teenage human girl. Not some undead freak who's hymen grew back every time she had sex, therefor it had to hurt like hell every time it happened.

And yes. That was worth mentioning. Because Jessica was very hung up on that fact.

But either way, if she wanted to or not Jessica had to eat. She had no idea where any bloodbanks were in Lawrence, or anywhere back home for that matter, and animal blood was horrible. Like, way worse than TruBlood. So when Dracula offered to take her hunting she accepted. Much as she hated being a vampire, human blood did taste the best.

So after he made the offer she changed into one of her pretty new, not to mention free, dresses and a jacket to blend in before heading out to meet him. Luckily, she was faster than the average human, by a lot, so it took her no time at all to get to the designated place. Now all she had to do was wait for him to get there.

Judas had never had to live off of any kind of blood substitute. The idea disgusted him, truthfully. Humans constantly moaned about processed food, and this was no different. They were vampires. Human blood is what they were built for; the same way humans were built to eat their foods. He wondered what would happen if cows ever gained the ability to speak. Would the humans realize how utterly hypocritical they were? Very probably not. They did not have a tremendously pleasing track record with such self-aware realizations. Some might swear off cow meat, or even all meat in general, as some humans already seemed to. Others, very probably most of them, would justify their food choices and continue eating the same cows that could now speak out against being killed and eaten. It was the same with vampires, when you got right down to it. Judas wasn’t ashamed to admit that he wanted his food to taste good. Artificial food, on the whole, did not.

There was also the hunt. There was a dark pleasure in it, though it was not the same for him as it was for others of his kind. For him, his most enjoyable hunts were the sensual, seductive, and dark. Why was that the case? Judas liked to tell himself the reasons were complex, but in truth, at its heart, his reasoning was viciously simple: Anger, pain, and the need to lash out. Once upon a time, he had helped a man he loved like a brother save humanity from the very same sins he now tempted them into. For his troubles, he was spurned and cast out, turned into an abomination and left to wander alone for eternity. It was a bitter pill to swallow, and when the rage and pain twisted him beyond his breaking point, he began to see the joy in tempting His children back to the darkness they had been saved from. He gave them back the dark pleasures they had not been allowed to partake in since then. Judas liked to imagine that infuriated his former friend, and the great celestial hypocrite up in his eternal paradise, and that thought, however juvenile and asinine, gave him a deep sense of vindictive pleasure.

Over the years, though, another reason had cropped up. It was just as simple, but nowhere near as vicious: Loneliness. He was a true immortal, and would not ever receive the peace of death that others did. Even when this planet sat picked clean, when its bones were nothing more than cosmic space dust, he would live. Perhaps he would simply float in space, or perhaps he would end up on some other planet to continue the cycle. He wasn’t sure. The problem with such a thing was how truly lonely it left him. His particular condition and the reputation that came along with his name had left him with no possibility for companionship. It had warped his mind in monstrous ways, but also in tragic ones. No one could truly understand that particular kind of loneliness, and while he did not simper or whine about his pain as so many modern vampires seemed to, it was no less present and far more potent, given how long it had to become concentrated and refined.

It was what drew him to the women he’d been drawn to throughout time. The “harpies”, as modern retellings of Stoker’s novel would label them, were failures in that regard. Once upon a time, they had captivated him, but they turned out to be little more than politicking little bitches. He had not truly cared when Abraham had separated their heads from their bodies. It was the very same loneliness that had drawn him to Mina. And it was the same loneliness that had drawn him to New Orleans, and his only real child, Mary. Perhaps it was because of this loneliness that he had realized what was best for Mary. Perhaps it was that same pain which allowed him to see past his own rage and grant her the humanity she desired, even at the cost of being immolated by the bright, flaming star. Perhaps not. Judas wasn’t sure, and did not wish to dwell upon it now.

Judas enjoyed being a vampire. He enjoyed every monstrous turn, or so he had told himself since times beyond mortal imaginings. But once upon a time this was not the case. Long ago, when this hell was still new to him, he had abhorred the abomination he had become. Had there been any vampire hunters then, he would have thrown himself upon them in the hopes that they might find some way to end his torment. He had not wanted to hurt anyone then, and had lived off whatever animals he could find. When he could not find animals, he had gone hungry, though that never ended well. Each frenzied feeding and resulting death was like another knife in his rapidly darkening heart, and finally he could take no more. Left with little choice, he had allowed his pain and rage to twist him into the monster that his own surrogate family now claimed he was. It was either that or sink into hopeless, incoherent insanity as he strove futilely against his new condition, and in the end that would hardly have been any better and very likely would have been much worse.

Perhaps that was why he had taken an interest in Jessica. He saw in her something that reminded him of himself, long ago. Whether it was a pleasant reminder or not remained to be seen. That was okay. He had all the time in the universe to figure it out, especially with his ongoing plan for a haven for their sort. He was still ironing out a few details, largely shopping for appropriate buildings to purchase and narrowing down which out of state bank to rob. He was not worried about the security systems. Mortal security systems were hopelessly inadequate for him. It was only a matter of finding those two things and he would enact his plan. Until then, he could squat in an abandoned building and send away any who stumbled upon him with no memory of the event. And about a pint less of blood, not that anyone would notice such a small amount. Contrary to what many seemed to think, he did possess both self-control and common sense. It was less than he usually enjoyed, but more than enough to satisfy him for the moment.

By the time she arrived, he was already there. This was not immediately obvious because of his position in a shadowed alley. As fast as Jessica was, she couldn’t beat a flock of vampiric bats, largely because she still had to mind obstacles in her path and wind her way through roads. He simply flew above them. There might have been a metaphor there for his general perceptions of the world, if he’d bothered to stop and consider it. Judas did enjoy his surprise entrances. So once he’d given her a moment to wait, he stepped out from the alley behind her, his long black coat and blonde hair fluttering in a chill breeze he couldn’t feel. “Hello, little one,” he purred as he neared, giving her one of his rare smiles. The term might have sounded condescending from someone else, but from him it somehow sounded affectionate. “Are you certain you’re ready for this?” One eyebrow cocked slightly. The gesture might have reminded her slightly of Eric. Despite his outward appearance of indifference toward the question, he found that he was strangely willing to respect whatever answer she gave, even if she backed out. Usually such a thing would have met with derision, and yet… He brushed the thoughts aside. Save the contemplating for later. There were other concerns for now.

Considering the fact that Jessica had only been a vampire for just over a month, she really wasn't sure of what to do with herself just yet. Heck, she wasn't even all that sure of how to do most of what she knew vampires were supposed to be able to do. Eric had taught her some when he felt like it, but he didn't always feel like doing that sort of thing. Still, he taught her a whole lot more than Bill ever did, and Bill was the one that was supposed to be teaching her, what with being her maker and all. Maybe he was just stupid and thought that if he didn't teach her he hadn't really had to make another vampire, but not teaching her wasn't going to change what she was. It would just make it harder for her to stay alive. Or, well, stay up and moving around.

She didn't jump or anything when Dracula was suddenly walking up behind her, even though she'd been more worried about running her fingers through her hair, trying to make it look less windblown from the run she had gone on. Instead, she just turned around and grinned at him. "Hey, Drac," she said simply, her northern Louisiana accent apparent even in those two words. Usually she didn't nickname people so quickly, but she figured she might get weird looks if she went around calling him Dracula in public. But then he was asking her a question that made her nod. "Yep, I'm ready. I haven't eaten in like two days so I'm really hungry."

At least she didn't have to eat as often as she did when she was a human. Now she could go a couple days without meals before she started getting testy and irrational.

It was a very good thing Judas didn't know just how inept Jessica's maker was. Regardless of the vampire's person feelings on the issue of synthetic blood, it was irresponsible in the extreme to completely disregard the hunt when teaching a new vampire. Humans could often not experience something and simply not know what they were missing. Vampires could too, but this was not one of those cases. The temptation to feed from a human was always there. It was what they were built for. How could someone choose to resist such a temptation when they never knew the other side?

Judas was perfectly fine allowing Jessica to make her own choices in unlife. He wasn't her maker, and therefore she wasn't his responsibility. So he was taking her hunting, that meant little. He was just trying to help, which was such a new thought he had not fully digested it. However, he did feel she needed to make an informed decision, and especially in a world where the choices were simply human-or-animals, she needed to know the taste of both before she could truly decide which diet she wanted to adhere to. One could not make an informed decision without the experience. Still, if she backed out now, he would respect that.

The accent reminded him of his previous time in Louisiana and it actually drew a small smile from him. This was odd. He was being pleasasnt. He didn't mind the nickname. You could tell by how he didn't become disdainful or simply leave. Besides, there was wisdom in her avoidance of the name Dracula in public. Likely most of the assembled masses would think the two of them crazy, or perhaps assume they were...what was that word he read about? LARPing. Still, in a world where hunters appeared to be more prevalent, one could never be too careful. Judas really didn't want to kick things off with a bloodbath, which would be necessary should hunters come after him.

When she said she hadn't eaten in two days, one eyebrow arched again, this time in concern. A famished fledgling was a delicate matter, especially a famished fledgling eternally stuck as a teenager, as Jessica likely would be in some form. At least, if her world's form of vampirism was anything like his, she would be. Even an adult fledgling could find it hard to control themselves during a feeding if they were famished, one who was still gripped by the whims and emotions of a teenager could be even worse.

He would just have to keep a watchful eye on the proceedings. If it looked like things were slipping out of Jessica's control, he could step in. It was very convenient, having the ability to edit the memories of a human like they edited their little films. "Very well." He nodded towards the humans moving about them. Then he lowered his voice to a stage whisper and moved closer to her so she could hear it. "You have options. If you simply wish to feed and be done with it, anyone will do. If you wish for things to be a bit more pleasant, and to be a bit less blatant, you should choose someone that pleases you and coax them into an alley. How is up to you, but it should be in a way that allows you to feed from them without them knowing. Many vampires seduce their prey and use the excuse of," he paused here, looking for the right word, "I believe the common term today is 'making out' for why they are spending an inordinate amount of time on their prey's neck. If that is unsavory, I would recommend pretending to be in need of some aid and luring them into the alley that way. Some memory editing may be necessary afterward, however."

He wasn't really sure how much she did and didn't know about hunting. Right now, he was assuming she didn't know much, given what little he'd learned of her maker. He actually wasn't giving the advice in a condescending manner, though, which might have been a first for him. Then again, she was a vampire, and at least in some loose sense that meant she was one of his people. Had anyone really known him, they would not be surprised to find that he did have a gentler side toward those of his people that did not displease him, as the "harpies" had.

Jessica nodded as Dracula spoke, thankful that there was someone that was seriously willing to teach her what she needed to know. Hopefully, he'd have tips on some of the stuff that the vampires in her world could do, especially since it seemed like the small handful she'd come across here weren't able to do them. Like flying. Eric could fly but he wouldn't tell Jessica how or anything, which was so unfair. Because flying seemed like something that would make being what she was a little better.

But she did notice that he wasn't talking to her like a five year old, and that seemed to be pretty rare for vampires when they were speaking to the so-called newborns, which was another thing that wasn't fair. Just because she hadn't been a vampire for very long didn't mean that she was a complete idiot, and that's what so many of the others seemed to think of her. "Eric taught me the basics of huntin', at least," she said simply once he was done speaking. It might be good if Dracula knew what she knew, at least. "And glamors are no problem. They're like... the one thing that Bill bothered to teach me, and I'm really good at them. He even got mad at me once cause he had trouble overridin' one that I put on someone, and he was alive during like... the civil war or something. So he's pretty old."

That thought made her smile a little. She hadn't been all that fantastic at many things in life, mostly because she hadn't been allowed to try many things in life, but glamors she was a natural at.

"But anyway, the basics were all I really needed back home since, you know, vampires are all out in the open there and everythin' and there's all sorts of people who just want to get bitten." That made it a lot easier to hunt, when people were looking for vampires. And not looking for them to kill them, but because they liked being bitten and everything. But here that wasn't really the case. Here hardly anyone knew that vampires were real and out of the ones that did know there didn't seem to be very many that were willing to offer themselves for a meal. Even if a bite seriously wasn't just going to kill them or turn them or anything like that.
