Judas enjoyed being a vampire. He enjoyed every monstrous turn, or so he had told himself since times beyond mortal imaginings. But once upon a time this was not the case. Long ago, when this hell was still new to him, he had abhorred the abomination he had become. Had there been any vampire hunters then, he would have thrown himself upon them in the hopes that they might find some way to end his torment. He had not wanted to hurt anyone then, and had lived off whatever animals he could find. When he could not find animals, he had gone hungry, though that never ended well. Each frenzied feeding and resulting death was like another knife in his rapidly darkening heart, and finally he could take no more. Left with little choice, he had allowed his pain and rage to twist him into the monster that his own surrogate family now claimed he was. It was either that or sink into hopeless, incoherent insanity as he strove futilely against his new condition, and in the end that would hardly have been any better and very likely would have been much worse.
Perhaps that was why he had taken an interest in Jessica. He saw in her something that reminded him of himself, long ago. Whether it was a pleasant reminder or not remained to be seen. That was okay. He had all the time in the universe to figure it out, especially with his ongoing plan for a haven for their sort. He was still ironing out a few details, largely shopping for appropriate buildings to purchase and narrowing down which out of state bank to rob. He was not worried about the security systems. Mortal security systems were hopelessly inadequate for him. It was only a matter of finding those two things and he would enact his plan. Until then, he could squat in an abandoned building and send away any who stumbled upon him with no memory of the event. And about a pint less of blood, not that anyone would notice such a small amount. Contrary to what many seemed to think, he did possess both self-control and common sense. It was less than he usually enjoyed, but more than enough to satisfy him for the moment.
By the time she arrived, he was already there. This was not immediately obvious because of his position in a shadowed alley. As fast as Jessica was, she couldn’t beat a flock of vampiric bats, largely because she still had to mind obstacles in her path and wind her way through roads. He simply flew above them. There might have been a metaphor there for his general perceptions of the world, if he’d bothered to stop and consider it. Judas did enjoy his surprise entrances. So once he’d given her a moment to wait, he stepped out from the alley behind her, his long black coat and blonde hair fluttering in a chill breeze he couldn’t feel. “Hello, little one,” he purred as he neared, giving her one of his rare smiles. The term might have sounded condescending from someone else, but from him it somehow sounded affectionate. “Are you certain you’re ready for this?” One eyebrow cocked slightly. The gesture might have reminded her slightly of Eric. Despite his outward appearance of indifference toward the question, he found that he was strangely willing to respect whatever answer she gave, even if she backed out. Usually such a thing would have met with derision, and yet… He brushed the thoughts aside. Save the contemplating for later. There were other concerns for now.
