It started with a spell gone wrong on All Hallow's Eve. No one knew then what had happened, or even that anything at all had happened. The group of seventh-year students who had gotten together with some Firewhiskey at the edge of the Forbidden Forest didn't know what they were doing with that old spell book that one of them had found in his trunk. It had been a bit of fun, messing around with old incantations, spells they could hardly pronounce ...

... but when the first ghost appeared, haunting a person rather than a place, people started to wonder. Ghosts of witches and wizards killed suddenly began to appear, haunting people who had been close to them in life, or people they had a need to reconcile with, or people who had significant influence over them in their life.

It didn't end there, however. The ghosts began to solidify, bit by bit, day by day.

Because a world occupied with rebuilding and tracking down fleeing Death Eaters really needs another complication.

The Haunted is a trio-era game with an AU twist. Both Severus Snape and Fred Weasley survived the war. The spells in the Forest triggered an effect of the resurrection stone, creating ghosts that slowly solidify into real people by drawing from the magic used by the wizards and witches they're haunting. When the ghosts become solid, living people once more, they don't retain any of the memories they obtained while they were ghosts; they remember everything up until their point of death, however.

Among the chaos of rebuilding, gathering the escaped Death Eaters and putting them to trial, and worrying about the rise in suspected werewolf activity, the return of the formerly deceased is not something anyone's ready to deal with.
