Cake TAsting
Who: Dora and Melinda
When: Wednesday May 31
Where: Sweet Nothings
What: Dora finally got around to making an appointment for cake tasting.
Warnings: Probably language, knowing Dora.

Dora was, perhaps, one of the worst bride-to-be's in the world. Not because she was a bridezilla, no. Quite the opposite. She simply was not driven to do all the things and get them done and organize and and and.

In the end, honestly, it was probably going to be a very quiet ceremony and some sort of party for their friends. But cake was something important and something she definitely wanted, and she wanted ti from Sweet Nothings and no where else. She'd been coming here since she moved back and she loved the place and moreover, she really liked Melinda (and also her patience with caffeine deprived people).

But she'd finally got around to coming in for her cake tasting thingy, and she figured she'd take her top couple of choices and feed them to Ewan and let him help her make the final decision. She'd hoped to bring Nora along, but the timing just hadn't worked out for this part. There would be other things.

But for now, she was making her 10am appointment with Melinda, tired but not exhausted. She tended to be her best lately around this time of the morning and then after her after work nap and into the first part of the night.

"I would have brought you something to say thank you but you already serve tea and coffee, so I really wasn't sure what to bribe you with," Dora told the other witch with a smile as she tucked herself and her baby bump into a seat.

“Oh,” Melinda chuckled, amused by the thought of the bride bribing her, when really her job was to provide what the bride wanted… and still keep it edible for the guest. “As long as you let me keep a picture of your cake for references, then that’s all I need. Can I get you anything before we start?”

As she spoke, she waved her wand to secure the wheels on the small trolley she had loaded up with cake and filling samples. “Also, I’ve had pregnant witches comment that fresh baked smell is too strong for them, so if you’d rather, we can go upstairs for a quieter tasting.”

"Of course, though I doubt I'll be looking for anything too fancy. Just tasty." Her grin was happy at the thought, though. She might suck at this planning thing, but that didn't mean she wasn't looking forward to being married to the man she loved so very much. Sure, she'd be going down the aisle as big as a whale. But she'd be going down the aisle regardless.

"No, just something to drink while I pretend I'm not going to eat everythign in sight," she said with another little smirk. In fact, she tended to not eat a ton at any given setting, and was in fact still a little thin aside from the growing belly.

"I haven't had too many scent triggers, but thank you," Dora said. "I'm going to feel off no matter what, I've discovered. I'm one of those lucky few who doesn't seem to lose the morning sickness in the second trimester," she said with wryness and a bit of pursed lip, though she wasn't necessarily complaining. She was just tired of the constant feeling, that was all.

“Then we’ll stay right here,” Melinda agreed with a nod. “Please, feel free to Charm the chair to your liking.” Pandora’s comfort was more important than the look of her chair, and any changes could be removed afterwards.

“Now, to keep it simple, I haven’t brought over our standard cakes and fillings,” she continued as she placed an illustrated menu on the table for Pandora to use as a reference. “All of them are available for you to choose from, however…” Melinda paused for a moment as she poured a cup of tea and set that down for Pandora to sweeten or cool as she pleased – her knowledge of the other witch’s pregnancy-affected preferences weren’t that detailed, after all. “I’ve taken the liberty of preparing some of our specialty-orders-only cakes and fillings for you, based on what I know of your preferences.”

Gesturing to each of the plates in turn, she began the introduction. “This is an orange zest cake, which is similar to our regular lemon cake, but a touch more tangy. I know you’ve had to cut down on the caffeine, so I thought you might enjoy the mocha latte cake. And finally, I’ve made a marbleized cake of cinnamon and vanilla almond. I can do that with any two flavours if you prefer that, and if you want something else entirely, let me know, and I will make that for you.”

“Then we have the fillings, where I’ve brought out the cinnamand, the dulce de leche, mango, and coconut cream. You can also have fresh fruits or preserves, of course, so all you have to do is say the word, and I’ll do my best to make that happen.”

Dora nodded, pulled a wand -- the cedar, not the blackthorn -- and then hesitated. "Would you mind terribly if I put my feet up?" she asked, hating to admit to anything approaching weakness, but her feet were already startin to bother her, which made her glad that she could do a fair amount of her work sitting down. Except the bloody money making tents.

Dora added a bit of lemon to the tea and that was it. She was trying to keep minimum caffeine but honestly nobody liked her much when she was totally deprived, especially given her insomnia was perhaps even healthier than before these days. Though that afternoon nap thing had turned out to be splendid and she lived for those few hours after work where she could pass out.

Her eyes were bright as she looked the cakes over that Melinda had brought out. Ah, having a baker who knew her preferences was grand. "Oh my, mocha latte cake?" she said, intrigued because she couldn't really have more than her one cup of coffee in he mornings. Though the orange zest... and cinnamon vanilla almond... how on earth was she supposed to choose?

"You are a goddess," Dora said. "However am I going to choose?" But she reached first for the coffee flaored cake, wanting to give it a go. "Ewan is going to give me such looks if I decide on more than one kind of cake.

“No, by all means, go right ahead,” Melinda assured Pandora, and waited until the other witch was as comfortable as she could be.

This was her favourite part of any tasting: when the bride or groom realized that they were going to be eating cake in order to find the ones they liked the best. “Oh, I’m sure Ewan won’t mind it one bit,” she chuckled and poured both of them a glass of cold water. Normally, she would have served either a chilled champagne or a bottle of sparkling elderflower non-alcoholic cider, but since Ewan wasn’t here today and Pandora would be taking home her favourites, she would be sending the bottle home with her, so they could get the full experience at home.

“If you find more than one you like, we can combine them. We can either marble them, like I did with this one,” she pointed to the cinnamon and vanilla almond cake, “do a more geometric pattern inside the cake, or make a tier with each flavour combination.”

So Dora charmed her chair just a bit cushier and friendlier for her shortness, and propped her feet up with a sigh that said that really did feel pretty good.

Dora was actually pretty excited, now that she was here, though how on earth she was going to choose she actually had no idea. That might end up having to be Ewan's job, to be honest. But he was good at making decisions (though normally she was as well). After all, they'd chosen their babies' names in a matter of hours!

"You're so clever with these things. I don't have half this kind of imagination," she said before she took a bite of that first one and closed her eyes in total bliss. Yes, she really could live off the stuff at this bakery some days. Melinda was the best. "I didn't even consider tiers."

”Oh, thank you,” Melinda smiled at Pandora, genuinely warmed by the compliment. “Though I have to disagree with you about your imagination. I’ve seen your Charms and the work you do.” Pandora’s Charms were always perfect and even though Melinda had grown up in Diagon Alley, surrounded by magic, even she was surprised to see some of the things Pandora Charmed.

“I’m sorry to say, that you’ll have a lot of options and combinations to choose from,” she said as she placed a booklet on the table. “In here, you’ll find the traditional shapes and designs, though everything can be fitted to suit your day. So my suggestion would be to pick out the cakes and filling you’d like to take back to Ewan, take your time tasting them a couple of times, each time with a different drink to them. Because the cake that tastes amazing with Earl Grey doesn’t necessarily even taste good with wine or water or…” she gestured to the bottle of elderflower cider. “Cider. If you already have chosen your colours and have an idea of which style you’ll be going with, I’d be happy to make some sketches with ideas for cake designs, but I’ve put all that in there. Would you like another slice?”

"Simply in function," she said, though she was proud of her work, it didn't have the intrinsic beauty from her most of the time, though she possibly wasn't thinking of it all objectively. "Oh, speaking of, however... I have almost all the bugs worked out of the door charms I've been working on." The ones attached to the doors of some of the stores of the alley, being beta tested, that rang to inform people of that someone had entered; only she'd tailored, finally, a charm to play a unique tone suited to each person who entered. It had mostly been for the challenge and uniqueness of it. "If you wanted one, that is."

"Such a hardhsip!" she declared, light eyes sparkling with amusement. All the choices. She was spoiled, to have to choose among all the options.

Dora nodded, seriously considering Melinda's words, since the woman obviously knew what she was doing with all of this. "I'm honestly torn," she admitted to Melinda as she slowly ate the slice of cake. "Part of me thinks a formal reception, beautiful dresses and such all, would be fabulous. But part of me thinks something casual might be better." She sighed gustily. "Obviously I'm awful at this whole wedding thing." She nodded at the offer of more cake,t hough she chose a slice of a different one, wanting to taste it next.
