Who: Mandy Brocklehurst, Terry Boot, Michael Corner
When: Early evening, November 22
Where: Veritas Cafe
Why: Michael was on his way to meet Terry, but Terry sees Mandy first.

It was a chill evening and rather than be holed up inside of her flat, Mandy took initiative and decided to venture out. After a brisk walk, she ended up in the corner of a booth at the main street cafe, her table riddled with a book or two and a journal for work notes. Upon her plate sat a half eaten cucumber and bean sprout sandwich, barely half an hour old. A warm cup of rose tea sat at the right of her hand, the scene wafting loosely around her as she unconsciously chewed on the end of her goose feather quill.

She wouldn't have noticed the figure approaching her if they hadn't said anything. So much for being alert.

At Michael's mention of the plant that he had anonymously sent to Mandy, Terry's eyes went wide. He wasn't going to tell her who it was from, was he? Surely not. He'd probably just hint around at it until it was painfully obvious. He needed to get Michael out of there.

"You know what, Michael? We should probably get going," Terry said through gritted teeth, attempting to maintain a pleasant look on his face. "I'm sure Mandy has better things to do." Part of him sort of wanted to know Mandy's answer to the question, though.

Mandy stared curiously at the tug of war that began with Terry and Michael's sleeve. Though she wasn't pleased with Michael's presence or being disturbed, all pretense of studying was lost with the company.

Michael waved Terry off, "C'mon Ter, don't take off so quickly. I haven't seen Mandy in awhile," at this revelation, he turned to Mandy with a slight pout, "Shame, too. I love hearing about your studies from you rather than your journal. More engaging," he remarked.

Nonplussed, the herbologist stared on before regaining her voice, "Yes..well. In answer to your question, it was a dancing plant.." she trailed. And as for whether if she liked it or not.

"It's certainly interesting," she said staring back down at her notes without really reading the words. She had been weary of the plant at first, not knowing who it had come from, but placing it on the kitchen counter near the radio had provided her a small mimic of company as she studied and it swayed it's leaves in motion with the song.

"Hear that, Ter? It's interesting," he said cheekily with his eyes directed at his best friend pointedly before turning back to Mandy.

"Right..so," she continued undeterred by Michael's normally odd behavior, "whoever sent it knows a thing or two about plants, or at least has read The Power of Movement In Plants by Darwin, because it's not a common specimen."

Terry was starting to become nervous, as it didn't seem like Michael was planning on letting them leave anytime soon. Pulled out of his worries as Mandy said the plant was 'interesting,' Terry wondered if that was good or bad.

"Yeah, I heard," Terry responded, not liking the look Michael was giving him. It was true that Terry had read that particular book, as he didn't know much about plants himself and had wanted to get her something unique.

"So, is interesting good or bad?" he couldn't help asking, voicing his thought from earlier. He tried to appear calm, like he was only asking to make polite conversation.

Michael smiled regardless of the shaky wellbeing of his friend. He was doing him a favor in the long run, honestly.

Not really acute to Terry's otherwise occupied anxiety, Mandy answered uncertainly, "Interesting, peculiar?" she supplied, which was a gray area in between.

"Nonsense, Mandy love," Michael remarked, "It's either you-liked-it-good or it-was-a-terrible-thing-bad."

Shaking her head, Mandy rolled her eyes, "No, Michael. It's peculiar, because there was nothing important attached or even a return-to-sender address, just a small, odd note," she answered, scrunching her nose.

"Ohhh," Michael resounded, nearly painfully obvious, "Like a love note?" he leaned forward on the palm of his hand.

"Was it pretty heart-moving? I bet you were surprised."

"Surprised because the note was utter clutter," she said flatly.

"Oh," Michael looked downtrodden. He was sure the play on plant terminology and such would tickle her pink.

Terry would beg to differ that Michael was truly doing him a favor. Of course, at the rate he was going, Mandy wouldn't know that Terry fancied her until they were in a nursing home, so maybe he did need a little push. Just a push, though. Not a shove.

Still perplexed over whether or not Mandy had been pleased to received the plant, Terry felt his mouth go dry as Michael called the note a love note. He wasn't too discouraged that Mandy hadn't liked it, though. The note hadn't been his idea anyway. At least, not that kind of note.

"Utter clutter, huh?" he repeated, unable to keep from smirking a little at Michael. "That's too bad. I bet the bloke that sent it would be pretty crushed to hear that."

"Maybe. But if it was a bloke, I can't even be sure because there was no return address, or name or even initials to go by. Why would someone do that?" she questioned more towards Terry than Michael, her fingers curling around the handle of her tea cup.

Michael still looked rather miffed about his note being called clutter, "For mystery purposes? I mean, you're curious about who sent it, aren't you?" he pressed.

"Well, yes, but anyone would be, I would think."

"Whoever sent it must just be afraid that you'd turn them down. You're rather brutal, Mandy." Michael pouted.

The blonde let out a 'tch' sort of noise, as if she couldn't be more blunt.

Terry had just been about to reply to Mandy, when Michael took the words right out of his mouth. "Yeah, probably because they were nervous about... what you'd think," he agreed. "Although," he continued, raising one hand up to scratch at the back of his neck nervously, "I suppose that's rather cowardly, huh? I mean, if the bloke cared that much to go to the lengths of finding out what you liked, you'd think he'd want you to know he sent it, right?"

This didn't mean, however, that Terry was about to admit to Mandy that he had been the one to send her the plant. He was still afraid of being shot down.

"I'm not that terrible." Mandy said with a frown, thinking over the situation. Could she help most men were flirtatious like Michael and didn't really have a desire to get to know her, just try and get something else? Men were wretched and she would have rather spent most of her time studying plants than wasting it with meaningless flirtation.

Mandy focused her gaze on Terry and then nodded, "Exactly so. What am I supposed to do? Wait on another plant to fly through my window?"

"Oh, no, I didn't mean to insinuate that! I just..." Terry hastily replied, then trailed off. "Well, maybe he'll send you something else, or reveal who he is," he shrugged. Right. He'd have to work up a lot of nerve to tell Mandy it was him. What if she was repulsed or didn't like him that way? It would probably be best to continue admiring her from afar.

"I can hardly wait," Mandy said with a flat tone, showing she didn't really care if another plant came through her window. Even if she would be curious and interested in it. She began to close her journals and stack her books on top, knowing she wouldn't get any work done.

Michael took note of her movement and took action.

"Hey, so Mandy, you're coming to my birthday party, yeah?"

She looked at Michael as if he'd grown a second head.

"I don't think-"

"Terry here would really appreciate the company. He gets a bit shy in social settings." Michael interrupted, raising his blue eyes to level with his best friend's.

If he hadn't been worried about the high likelihood of ending up in jail, Terry would have strangled Michael with his bare hands. They would definitely need to have a chat later about the benefits of subtlety.

"I, uh, you don't have to come if you don't want," Terry quickly assured her. "Not that I don't want you to, but I'll be okay on my own, although I would enjoy your company... you know, if you do end up coming." Ugh. Real smooth there. Terry had to stop himself from banging his head against the nearest surface.

Michael wouldn't understand subtlety if it knocked him round the head and then stayed for dinner. Poor Terry.

Mandy looked from Michael to Terry. Years of sharing the same house and most of the time she just shook her head at them.

This time a small, semi-amused laugh escaped her lips.

Michael tried not to look too terribly shocked.

"I'm not really a 'go out to bars' type of person," Mandy reminded, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, "But I'm sure you'll have a good birthday whether I'm there or not, Michael."

"Well, since I'm so gracious enough to not ask for gifts, you could grace me with your presence? I promise I won't act too obnoxious. Terry will keep me in check. Right, Terry?" Michael poised himself as if he wore a shining, golden halo and never did any wrong.

Perking up slightly at Mandy's laugh -- it was a wonderful sound -- Terry couldn't help but wonder if she was laughing at something he'd said or done. Was this laugh a good thing, or an 'I can't believe how stupid you are' pity laugh? Oh well, he'd take it anyway.

"Yes," Terry agreed. "I'll make sure he behaves himself." This plan of Michael's seemed to be going okay so far. Slipping one hand into his pocket, Terry crossed his fingers.

The laugh was a little mixture of both, but not quite so terrible. She found Terry's rambling somehow amusing enough.

She gathered her books into her arms and gave Michael a look that clearly said 'I just can't believe you sometimes.'

"We'll see, Michael."

She looked at Terry questionably, "I don't understand how you handle him."

We'll see? That meant she might show up! That small bit of hope was enough to make Terry forget about anything he'd been upset at Michael for earlier.

"Oh, he's really not so bad once you get to know him," Terry shrugged, grinning at Michael and giving him a grateful 'I owe you one, mate' look. "In fact, he kind of grows on you after awhile," he added, returning his attention to Mandy.

Mandy would deliberate whether to go or not. Bars weren't her scene, but Serena would probably end up dragging her anyway. She was closer to Michael.

Michael gave Terry this 'I know you do' kind of look as Mandy stood away, her back to him. Then he wriggled his eyebrows suggesting that he was the greatest person ever.

Giving another indignant 'tch' sound, this time a bit more light-hearted, Mandy shook her head, "I hope not."

"Well, I hope you two have fun doing...whatever it is you're going to do." She added, making her exit apparent.

Cocking his head to the side, Terry furrowed his brow at Mandy's words. "You hope not... what?" he repeated, a little confused as to what she was replying to.

"Oh, I'm sure we will," he smiled. "And I hope you have a nice evening, Mandy." Terry was a little sad that she was leaving, but happy with the progress he'd made, however small of an amount it was.

"I hope he doesn't grow on me," Mandy clarified. Michael pouted, unbeknownst by the blonde.

"Thank you, Terry," she replied.

"See you tomorrow night, Mandy!" Michael called out happily.

"We'll see, Michael," she said back, not turning around as she made her way out of the cafe shop.

Waiting until she was safely gone, Terry turned to Michael with a gleeful look on his face. "She said she might come. Did you hear that?" he grinned. Sure, 'we'll see' wasn't a definite yes, but it wasn't a no, either.

"I really thought I almost blew it there, when she started talking about the plant," he shook his head. "I'll need to rethink future gifts. If I send more, that is."

Michael smiled up at Terry, seeing how easily excited his friend got over something as simple as a 'we'll see'. 'We'll see's' were never quite definite.

"Yes, Terry. I heard. Twice. I was right here. Don't know if you noticed." he said with a gesture of his fingers dallying between himself and the table.

"What do you mean you thought you almost blew it?" Michael asked, a bit confused.

Rolling his eyes good-naturedly at his best friend, Terry scoffed, "Of course I knew you were here. You were rather hard to miss with all of your comments. Some of which I nearly wanted to strangle you for."

Taking a seat at the table, Terry admitted, "Well, from the way she was talking, I thought maybe she hated the plant."

Michael grinned widely, his pearly whites shining bright, "Oh, really? For which ones?" he said cheekily.

"I don't think Mandy could hate any plants.. She loved the Mandrakes when we dealt with them in second year. By the by," he noted with a raise of her hand, "don't get one of those, I don't know if I have to tell you that."

"All of the comments about the plant, and then you telling her she needed to come keep me company at your party," Terry informed him.

Giving Michael an incredulous look, Terry slowly replied, "Yeah... you don't have to worry about me getting her one of those, mate. I don't have a death wish."
