It didn't matter where Rose had wound up going after the Doctor had left her behind; the Doctor had a destination: The Museum. He needed to find Jack and maybe catch a glimpse of Sarah Jane. He needed to know if those very important people were alive and that Jack was alright. It really was that simple. What about the Doctor? Well, he'd had a bit of a rough patch - and nothing was better for smoothing that sort of feeling over than seeing your friends in prime condition.

So, he'd slip down the familiar corridor to knock on Jack and Ianto's door. Don't expect apologies, Con Man, he didn't have any; he just wanted to make sure that you and that Torchwood-Heathen of yours were alright and then he'd be on his merry way to the carnival.

Come now, Jack was at least trying. He could be happy for others who had fiends returned to them. He knew his own relief having Ianto returned to him (even if he hadn't believed it at first. But then again, Vas Captio was known for screwing with its captives), so he could be happy for others, even if he would have preferred Remy gone back under whatever rock it was he had crawled out from beneath.

Not exactly among Sam's favorite people at the moment.

God, how many people had the Doctor managed to piss off lately?

"Doctor!" Why was it Jack was always running after the man?

He was pissing a lot of people off. Remy, Jack, Nine, Sam... that was the short list. There was a longer list of long held grudges that the Doctor abode as well. Still, that didn't make the most recent ones hurt even more so,

'Doctor!' Jack called from behind him and John Smith turned around, finger to his lips. "Rose," he hissed, completely unsure if she was actually in the museum or not.

"What? I told you, I'll take care of it." For a tone that should have sounded annoyed it came out as more tired. Probably because he hadn't slept well.

That was the thing: Jack didn't want to be pissed at Ten, he truly didn't. It hurt so much because Jack loved the Doctor as much as he did. He simply was hurt beyond belief at things that had happened, that was all.

It was the lack of trust, that was what hurt him the most -- coupled with the fact that the Doctor couldn't trust Ianto. There were two (well, technically three now) men Jack trusted with his life: Nine, Ten and Ianto. Yes, Jack understood Torchwood, but the Doctor could still deal with him? So why not Ianto?

Jack waved off the hiss. With everything that had been said to Nine the day before, they had survived timelines being revealed. Jack figured they were okay. "You'd take care of it, yet you want me to keep an eye on her. I'd like to know what I'm watching for."

The Doctor didn't want to be angry at Jack, either. No, he wanted to make Jack understand. He'd been on the verge of happiness, real happiness, and Torchwood had taken it away from him in a most efficient and painful way. Ianto was part of that archivist or not - and the Doctor wasn't quite so sure he believed that whole bit. What did Torchwood need with an archivist, anyway? The Doctor tried not to think about it. He tried to believe Jack. Yet every time he thought of Ianto he thought of that terrible, terrible day. Maybe it was because Ianto was the only thing he'd had until now to attribute to that time; really, Ianto was the only person he had to blame but himself.

"I'll take care of him," the Doctor corrected. You going to ask him what he meant by that, Jack? "I want you to keep an eye out for everything I can't be here to watch for. Because Nine is single mindedly trying to get us out of here and keeps leaving her on her own. Unfortunately, I can't stay with her," because it eats me up. "So, if you don't mind... Just keep an eye out. Please."

They would work through this -- Jack knew they had to. Because if they wound up at odds with one another, Jack wasn't sure what he'd do. He needed Ten in his life, dammit. Torchwood did have need of an archivist, how else would they keep the archives safe? Yes, Doctor, Jack was all about protecting the human race, just as you were. Ianto helped him, Ianto wasn't like the torchwood one types. Why couldn't you see that?

Why couldn't you trust Jack's judgement in this?

No, Jack wasn't going to ask -- oh who was he kidding? "Take care of how? He wasn't in bad shape when he returned, was he?" Jack was extending the olive branch, Doctor. He was trying. He honestly was.

"When haven't I, Doctor?" Jack asked softly. "I've done my best, but failed admirably when I didn't have all the information about this place that you had. How do you expect me to do what you ask of me when I know nothing? I have no computers and this?" he held up the plastic toy on his wrist, "This doesn't work. I can't get information like I'm used to getting."

And that was the crux of things. That the Doctor had withheld things from him.

"Yes, I'll keep an eye out for her. I love her just about as much as you do." Yes, Jack could tell. It took one sworn bachelor to recognise it in another.

Of course they would work this this. The Doctor couldn't go on being mad at Jack forever; and he knew the Captain couldn't do the same. They were too good of friends and had shared too much to let a misunderstanding like this come between them.

For all the questions Jack was asking in his mind about the Doctor's trust in Ianto; the Doctor was asking the same about his issues with Gambit. I trust him, why can't you? It wasn't like the Doctor ran around trusting everyone, you know. Most of the people here didnt even know he was an alien, at least not first hand, he hadn't told them; he didn't trust them.

"No." The Doctor looked away. "Just some unfinished business. Ends to tie and all that."

He knew it went without asking when it came to Rose; but, still he felt he needed to ask because it was that important. Some things couldn't go without saying and makingn sure someone had their eye on her was one of them. "Those tunnels had nothing to do with what happened today, Captain." The Doctor spoke quietly. "I kept them hidden because I didn't want a witch hunt on our hands when they all found out who Jenny was. Remember how ramped up everyone was after the quake? Can you imagine what they would have done to her?"

Hands went deep into his pockets, the fork was still doing quite well as object of his fiddling. "I should go," he looked out toward the end of the corridor. "Really." The Doctor's tone was quiet, and perhaps a bit disheartened. He had a lot on his mind, even if his friends had been returned unharmed.
