It didn't matter where Rose had wound up going after the Doctor had left her behind; the Doctor had a destination: The Museum. He needed to find Jack and maybe catch a glimpse of Sarah Jane. He needed to know if those very important people were alive and that Jack was alright. It really was that simple. What about the Doctor? Well, he'd had a bit of a rough patch - and nothing was better for smoothing that sort of feeling over than seeing your friends in prime condition.

So, he'd slip down the familiar corridor to knock on Jack and Ianto's door. Don't expect apologies, Con Man, he didn't have any; he just wanted to make sure that you and that Torchwood-Heathen of yours were alright and then he'd be on his merry way to the carnival.

Jack was... well... there weren't many words in the english language that could describe just how Jack was feeling. Relief didn't even begin to cover it. His hands stroked Ianto's bare back as his lover dozed on his chest. Jack, for his part, didn't trust himself to close his eyes for fear that this place would take Ianto from him once again.

He heard the knock on the door but was loathe to leave Ianto. No, he really didn't want to move from beneath a very warm and very clean smelling Welshman just to tell whoever it was to go fuck off.

Bugger it. Wouldn't do any good to have Ianto woken. Kissing the other man's forehead, Jack managed to untangle himself without much protestation. Another kiss as he slid from their makeshift bed, watching Ianto cuddle against his now abandoned pillow. Jack pulled on a pair of trousers and forewent the shirt. It would only be coming off again shortly.

Jack opened the door and stopped when he saw the Doctor standing there. He had half a mind to slam the door in the other man's face but he held his temper.

"What?" he asked brusquely.

The Doctor waited, hearing shuffling from within. Once the door came open with little ceremony and the Doctor spied the shirtless con man and rather conspicuously glanced around his side to see Ianto sleeping behind him, the Doctor knew all was right in the world.

"Just doing head count. You've been counted," the Doctor plastered on a grin and made to walk away. The look on Jack's face told him that this would be more of an ordeal than the Time Lord really had stomach for.

Good, Jack was alright, his lover was alright and things were good. At least he could count some things as fixed or fixable. Hands into his trench pockets he was thinking of whom he needed to check up on next.

Yes, Doctor, Ianto was well and truly alive and Jack could attest to that. He wasn't into screwing corpses thank you very much. Or being screwed by them for that matter. Jack enjoyed both ways -- he wasn't picky.

"Both of us," Jack replied, flicking his head over his shoulder. Yes, still there. Good. "He's fine and back. Who knows what the Powers had been planning with this stunt."

Jack drew in a breath watching the Doctor. Come on, Doctor. Give him something here. He wasn't in the wrong.

"Good." Was all John Smith said.

Stubborn much?

"Gambit is back, too. Said something to Rose this morning, something unpleasant." The Doctor looked away. Starting back down the hallway again. "I'll take care of it."

He was plucking out his journal, shifting through the pages. "And no sign of Shannon." He peeked back over his shoulder before snapping the book closed and continuing back down the hallway he'd come from.

The stubbornness in the room was going to be stifling between Jack and the Doctor. Problem was they both thought they were right -- and in a way, they were.

"I'm glad," Jack replied. And, if he were honest with himself, he was glad... even if it was Gambit. "What did he say?" Jack asked, curiosity getting the better of him. You're not the only one who cares about her." the fact that it was Remy who had said something didn't endear the man to Jack in the slightest, as if Jack was even happy with him to begin with.

All right, so Jack had the decency to look abashed. All that had mattered was that Ianto was back. Nothing more. Well, shit.

"What about from Sam?" Jack called out. Keep this about others and not them. "Maybe he's heard from her."

When Jack said he was glad it was amazing that the Captain couldn't see his eyes rolling through the back of his head. Don't pretend, Captain; the Doctor knew you didn't trust him as far as you could throw him (and let's face it, it wouldn't be all that far.) "I said I'd handle it. You keep an eye on her." Because I can't.

"Not exactly among Sam's favorite people at the moment," so, the Time Lord was saying, if Sam had heard from Shannon the Doctor had no way of knowing.

"Enjoy your reunion," he called back, waving his free hand and turning a corner.

Come now, Jack was at least trying. He could be happy for others who had fiends returned to them. He knew his own relief having Ianto returned to him (even if he hadn't believed it at first. But then again, Vas Captio was known for screwing with its captives), so he could be happy for others, even if he would have preferred Remy gone back under whatever rock it was he had crawled out from beneath.

Not exactly among Sam's favorite people at the moment.

God, how many people had the Doctor managed to piss off lately?

"Doctor!" Why was it Jack was always running after the man?

He was pissing a lot of people off. Remy, Jack, Nine, Sam... that was the short list. There was a longer list of long held grudges that the Doctor abode as well. Still, that didn't make the most recent ones hurt even more so,

'Doctor!' Jack called from behind him and John Smith turned around, finger to his lips. "Rose," he hissed, completely unsure if she was actually in the museum or not.

"What? I told you, I'll take care of it." For a tone that should have sounded annoyed it came out as more tired. Probably because he hadn't slept well.

That was the thing: Jack didn't want to be pissed at Ten, he truly didn't. It hurt so much because Jack loved the Doctor as much as he did. He simply was hurt beyond belief at things that had happened, that was all.

It was the lack of trust, that was what hurt him the most -- coupled with the fact that the Doctor couldn't trust Ianto. There were two (well, technically three now) men Jack trusted with his life: Nine, Ten and Ianto. Yes, Jack understood Torchwood, but the Doctor could still deal with him? So why not Ianto?

Jack waved off the hiss. With everything that had been said to Nine the day before, they had survived timelines being revealed. Jack figured they were okay. "You'd take care of it, yet you want me to keep an eye on her. I'd like to know what I'm watching for."

The Doctor didn't want to be angry at Jack, either. No, he wanted to make Jack understand. He'd been on the verge of happiness, real happiness, and Torchwood had taken it away from him in a most efficient and painful way. Ianto was part of that archivist or not - and the Doctor wasn't quite so sure he believed that whole bit. What did Torchwood need with an archivist, anyway? The Doctor tried not to think about it. He tried to believe Jack. Yet every time he thought of Ianto he thought of that terrible, terrible day. Maybe it was because Ianto was the only thing he'd had until now to attribute to that time; really, Ianto was the only person he had to blame but himself.

"I'll take care of him," the Doctor corrected. You going to ask him what he meant by that, Jack? "I want you to keep an eye out for everything I can't be here to watch for. Because Nine is single mindedly trying to get us out of here and keeps leaving her on her own. Unfortunately, I can't stay with her," because it eats me up. "So, if you don't mind... Just keep an eye out. Please."

They would work through this -- Jack knew they had to. Because if they wound up at odds with one another, Jack wasn't sure what he'd do. He needed Ten in his life, dammit. Torchwood did have need of an archivist, how else would they keep the archives safe? Yes, Doctor, Jack was all about protecting the human race, just as you were. Ianto helped him, Ianto wasn't like the torchwood one types. Why couldn't you see that?

Why couldn't you trust Jack's judgement in this?

No, Jack wasn't going to ask -- oh who was he kidding? "Take care of how? He wasn't in bad shape when he returned, was he?" Jack was extending the olive branch, Doctor. He was trying. He honestly was.

"When haven't I, Doctor?" Jack asked softly. "I've done my best, but failed admirably when I didn't have all the information about this place that you had. How do you expect me to do what you ask of me when I know nothing? I have no computers and this?" he held up the plastic toy on his wrist, "This doesn't work. I can't get information like I'm used to getting."

And that was the crux of things. That the Doctor had withheld things from him.

"Yes, I'll keep an eye out for her. I love her just about as much as you do." Yes, Jack could tell. It took one sworn bachelor to recognise it in another.

Of course they would work this this. The Doctor couldn't go on being mad at Jack forever; and he knew the Captain couldn't do the same. They were too good of friends and had shared too much to let a misunderstanding like this come between them.

For all the questions Jack was asking in his mind about the Doctor's trust in Ianto; the Doctor was asking the same about his issues with Gambit. I trust him, why can't you? It wasn't like the Doctor ran around trusting everyone, you know. Most of the people here didnt even know he was an alien, at least not first hand, he hadn't told them; he didn't trust them.

"No." The Doctor looked away. "Just some unfinished business. Ends to tie and all that."

He knew it went without asking when it came to Rose; but, still he felt he needed to ask because it was that important. Some things couldn't go without saying and makingn sure someone had their eye on her was one of them. "Those tunnels had nothing to do with what happened today, Captain." The Doctor spoke quietly. "I kept them hidden because I didn't want a witch hunt on our hands when they all found out who Jenny was. Remember how ramped up everyone was after the quake? Can you imagine what they would have done to her?"

Hands went deep into his pockets, the fork was still doing quite well as object of his fiddling. "I should go," he looked out toward the end of the corridor. "Really." The Doctor's tone was quiet, and perhaps a bit disheartened. He had a lot on his mind, even if his friends had been returned unharmed.

No, Jack couldn't stay mad at the Doctor forever either. Ticked for a goodly long while, of course, but never eternally mad. Hell, Jack had carried the grudge of being left behind on Satellite 5 for a good century but he had still forgiven the Doctor in the end. There was too much between them and Jack wouldn't let anything like this end their friendship.

Of course the Doctor was asking the same questions in his mind -- because they were essentially the same situation. However, in Jack's mind, Jack was right in this case.

And he was certain the Doctor thought he was right -- and hence the predicament.

Jack drew his lips into a thin line, almost feeling as if he'd been slapped. He was trying, he was honestly trying. He was in a fantastic mood (a few rounds with Ianto tended to do that to him) and was honestly trying to understand where Remy was concerned.

Trying being the key word there.

"Yes, I remember, Doctor," Jack said. "I was one of those who was fairly ramped up about it. Not to mention said quake did kill me." Yeah, Jack may have failed to mention that point a week ago. Whoops. Sorry, Doctor. "But I wish you would have told me, Doctor."

Because Jack knew he would have told the Doctor. So why didn't the same courtesy extend to him?

"You should, but I don't think you are," Jack said, taking a few steps towards the Doctor. "Come, it's been a rough frew days for us both." Jack held out his hand towards the Doctor, giving the other man a small smile.

Nothing funny, not hitting on him -- not when Jack's mind was still on the man sleeping beneath his greatcoat. Just... wanting his friend back and nothing more.

He saw that look of pain flash across Jack's face and he knew this was his chance; that moment where he could show Jack that he trusted him. He had to show Jack, because the Doctor knew he'd broken that trust -- even if he thought he was right in doing so at the time; he knew it wasn't right. He knew it. So, he had to make it up. Had to let him in somehow. Even if he was more soft hearted then Nine, it didn't make being vulnerable any easier for the Time Lord - even with Jack.

He smiled back, and took that hand a moment, offering a small squeeze. He'd make peace now, Jack and maybe you'd understand a little clearer just what was going on behind that austere Time Lord exterior.

"I keep putting my foot in it all around Jack," he started, withdrawing that hand and taking a small step away. Just because he was going to come relatively clean didn't mean that he wanted to stand too close while he did it.

"First with you and not telling you about the Tunnels," he took a deep breath, looking away. "Then with Rose, got her looking at me like she's the one who's doing everything wrong," brow rub and he looked back. "And Remy's bloody well infatuated." That last word was chosen carefully because he didn't want to make it out to be anything beyond that, infatuation. "So, might as well start somewhere cleaning it all up yeah?" Small smile there at the tail end.

"So, I'm sorry. I should have told you. The rest of that I said? Bunk."

And he still had a modulator to go build, too.

Yes, this was the moment for the Doctor to replace that trust Jack feared he had lost. Jack could understand why the Doctor did what he did but it also didn't make things any easier either. Jack simply wondered what had happened to make the Doctor keep such things from him. Was it Ianto? Was the Time Lord simply unable to turn the corner where Torchwood One was concerned?

What did Jack have to do to prove that Ianto wasn't the same as those yokels who had worked there? That Jack held so much contempt for everyone at Torchwood One and it had only been after several cups of the best damn coffee he'd ever had, coupled with a pterodactyl to make Jack give him a chance. What about the fact that Ianto had worked for several years as 'general support' a fancy term for being the team's butler? That Jack rarely even allowed Ianto field work for the longest time.

"You? Putting your foot in it?" Jack asked, lifting an eyebrow. "I never thought I'd live to see the day." He smiled at the squeeze, the small bit of a peace offering. Jack would take it and hold on for dear life. He let the Doctor take that small step, but was ready to move again should the situation arise. He wasn't about to let the Doctor get away from him. Not yet.

"Your decision to keep this from her," Jack pointed out. "Maybe the time is coming to tell her. She's a smart girl -- she's going to figure it out sooner or later." Jack paused, looking curiously at the Doctor following that admission. Remy's infatuation suddenly made a lot of things make sense. "And what about you?" Jack asked softly, giving his friend a small smile. "I promise I'll be good no matter what your response is." Because, while Jack loved the Doctor more than anything, there was a Welshman sleeping twenty metres behind him that he, dare he say, loved even more.

"Apology accepted," Jack said softly, giving the Doctor a small smile. "Just don't do it again," The last bit was said in his chiding tone of voice, even as he smiled. "Anything else I should know about this time? I've helped you out of more scrapes... I'm worth telling. If not because of my assistance then because we've been through far too much shite together."

Well at least it appeared initially that his attempt had succeeded. Jack had rendered a smile of sorts and it seemed the peace offering the Doctor had managed was accepted. Still, it didn't make him feel all that much better. This Time Lord wasn't quite so amazing at being humble, even in apology.

"Well, I'll just have to deal with it when she figures it out," he didn't have any doubt that she would manage to put all the pieces together sooner or later; Rose is brilliant, after all. Sometimes even more brilliant than him. She could see something right in front of her face even when the Time Lord might walk on past it, that said something for her level of intellect.

"Me?" He asked the question as if he hadn't been trying to mull the whole bit over in his head all morning. "It's complicated." And it was, complicated. Complicated by the fact that no matter how many outright terrible things he'd said to Remy he kept on coming back again and again and again. It was tiring and endearing all at once. "He's certainly not reasonable," that would be a strike against, for those keeping score.

"Things to know about.." he trailed of, scratching his head. "Loose ends to tie," thinking you had a pretty good idea what that meant by now, Jack being that his tone was neither playful nor entirely happy sounding. "Rose to avoid," still no smile. "Modulator to build," look, there's a hint of a smile there! "I think that about covers it, actually."

To be honest, Jack wasn't feeling much better either but he was working on it. They were getting there and all things pointed to them being better in the long-run. It would take a few more days, but there wasn't an unforgivable rift between them. On top of that, Jack knew how much this had cost the Doctor -- they were both men who had issues with the words 'I'm sorry'.

"She's getting close," Jack said, wanting to warn the Doctor. "What then? Find another lie or at least tell her what she deserves?" Because Rose did deserve to know. She was brilliant and there was a part of Jack that said she should be told before she figured it out -- because if she learned they all were lying to her? Jack didn't want to be on the receiving end of that conversation.

"Yes, you," Jack replied, giving the Doctor a look that said he didn't want to hear otherwise. "When is it not complicated with you oh Doctor, my Doctor?" He grinned then, clapping the Doctor on the shoulder. Couldn't help but use that phrase that was usually applied to him.

"You do know... that I'm here to help." It was left as a blanket statement, and Jack hoped the Doctor realised just how he intended that to be taken.

"I kissed her, Jack."

Let's just let that hang there a moment, shall we?

The Doctor, however, wasn't retreating from that bit. No, he was looking Jack right in the eye because he knew what fire he was playing with. He knew that really, deep down, he'd wanted her to know. He wanted her to know everything because she deserved it. "No more lies," he said flatly. "By ommission or otherwise." He swallowed hard. He'd done it, he'd kissed Rose Tyler. She knew now, right? That important bit? Not about him being the Doctor; but, that he loved her? That he really loved her? She had to know.

And in a flash the conversation was back to Mssr. LeBeau and it made the Doctor swallow harder still. As simple as it had been to say he'd kissed Rose to articulate the oddity of his relationship with the Mutant? Stranger still. "Well, Captain, when I sort it all out, you'll be the first to know." Because, really, there was a lot of sorting to do.

Jack added that bit on the tail end and the Doctor looked at his shoes. "I know, Jack. I've always known that. Even when you were playing at being a con man."

Jack looked at the Doctor, wondering for a moment if he was pulling his leg. But there was the look on the Doctor's face that told Jack this was no joke and that he actually had done it. Jack's face broke out into a wide grin, fairly certain this wasn't the right reaction but the only one he could come up with. He clapped the Doctor hard on the shoulder, unable to grin any wider if he even tried.

"Well it's about fucking time!" Jack said, laughing. "I was wondering if you'd ever be able to do it." God, finally, something good in this place -- outside of the man who was sleeping in the make-shift bed behind him. "When the time comes, she'll do the right thing," Jack said, in regards to Satellite 5. She had to or he'd cease to exist, something he wasn't too keen on happening.

His hand position changed to actually slip around the Doctor's shoulders, giving him an awkward hug. Yes, Doctor, Jack did understand that final admission that you cared for someone but couldn't admit it. It was something he was still struggling with when it came to Ianto. "I better be. Because knowing you, you'll manage to muck it up somehow. Not that I'm much better, but at least I have a bit more experience in that regard."

Gently, Jack hugged the Doctor, though still left his arm slung around the other man's shoulder. "I wasn't playing at anything. I was the con man who just... didn't know what he was getting into when he decided to go with the man in the blue box. And don't you dare say I didn't have a choice in the matter either." Well, exploding Chula warship didn't leave him much choice.

The grin he'd expected. Of course Jack would grin about this. A grin was fitting. That next bit? The part with the expletive which was not deleted? Well, that made the Doctor blink. Any sort of shared, conspiratorial smile was kept firmly in check. "Right, now that's been sorted..."

So, the hand that had been on his shoulder slid to wrap around his shoulders and Jack was back to being himself again and the Doctor was back to re-bottling everything back up where it belonged. Mostly. "Muck it up?" Well, he looked a little incredulous there, actually. "You think this is my first time around the block, Jack?" There was quite a string of broken hearts that came in the Doctor's wake, though he didn't like to think about it often. "It's ridiculous, Jack," the Time Lord said it because he'd assumed Jack was thinking it and he shook his head because it was what was rattling around in his own head at the moment.

"Oh, because you'd rather have stayed with that bomb and your martini?" Never even occurred to the Doctor that he ought to try and take you back home, by the way. "Well, I only take the best, Jack."

Yes, Jack would grin about this because that was what Jack did. And one had to be blind to see how the Doctor looked at Rose, but then again, Jack had that extra knowledge of seeing her and him together with that whole Medusa Ccrusade incident. "Oh come on, you can't just leave it there!" Jack said, nudging the Doctor. "One doesn't start with such juicy morsels and then just... not finish the story!"

Because Jack did want all the little details of this one hundred percent of the way.

"Yes, muck it up with a capital M," Jack replied, enjoying the banter between them. "No, I don't think it's your first time around the block, but I don't think you've Danced as much as I have." He quickly held up a hand. "And if you say no one has danced as much as me, we will have words -- even if it is true." Part of Jack wondered who had the longer string of broken hearts, he or the Doctor. Now, who ever would haev thought the day would come when Jack would be offering love advice to the Doctor?

"It's not ridiculous. It's... figuring out what you want. That is, assuming you know what you want."

Jack shook his head and shuddered. "Not particularly. And not when my computer was saying chance of termination was one hundred percent." Jack paused and looked at the Doctor then smiled. An actual, genuine Captain Jack smile -- not one that was usually on his face to hide what he was thinking. That sort of approval and compliment was something he always wanted from the Doctor. "I... thank you..." The words felt foreign on his tongue, saying thank you. "And, really, in spite of appearances? I choose my friends and partners carefully."

Take that as you will, Doctor -- though surprisingly, for once in Jack's life, it's not a come on.

"That's where it's going to stay, Jack." Famous last words. "Because she'd Nine's right now," he took a breath before continuing, raking his hand back through his hair. "They took him, well, right before he becomes me. Last shot he's got," which ought to explain a lot. "I can't just..." He let his thought trail away. It boiled down to the fact that he couldn't just take her from him. He couldn't just swoop in there and snatch Rose up from Nine when this was the absolute last bit of time he had left with her. Either way, one of them would be disappointed, and this Time Lord was just fine with it being him. He was used to it, actually. "He's her Doctor, not my turn yet." His tongue rode the roof of his mouth, clicking a bit. "That's alright though, this whole bit here? Gravy anyway, right? With my Rose off on that parallel world, not fair to be taking up with some other version of her, yeah?" Let him think that, Captain.

"Well..." The Doctor started. Knowing what you want, most obvious answer in the universe, yet so very complicated. "Haven't wanted anything in a very long time, Jack. Didn't even realize I'd needed anything until Rose." He looked away, this was getting a bit too open, wasn't it? Push it back into the TARDIS doors and lock them up tight, Doctor.

"I'd hope so. The best only deserve the same." The Doctor looked back down the hallway, about ready to make his escape. "Right, so, I'm going back to work on the modulator, really," he cleared his throat. "You ought to get back," he canted his head back toward the door.

Famous last words in deed. Particularly when said around Jack Harkness. Because Jack would remember things for a very long time... and bring things back up whenever he saw fit. Don't worry, Doctor, Jack won't do it at a time that it would embarrass -- but it would be mentioned once more. Sometime. You just won't know when. "Well, that now makes sense as to where all of us are from," Jack said, rubbing the back of his neck thoughtfully. "Can I state, for the record, that it's wonderful knowing more than you do just this once? At least... in events that are to come in the future that is." Because he wasn't going to let the Doctor forget that he came from a point further in the future and actually knew things.

Jack just gave the Doctor a look. "What do you mean it's not your turn?" Jack questioned, pulling away from the Doctor with his hands on his hips. "She's still the same Rose, no matter what. Rose is Rose. She's the same woman from Satellite 5 and the same woman..." That I see later on. "And she's mad for both of you." That jack could tell even with one conversation with Rose thusfar.

At that, Jack could understand, more than you would ever know, Doctor. "I know," he said softly, and there was a look in his eyes that spoke volumes. Because Jack had been content to Dance with whoever he wanted without thought... and then there had been Ianto. "I understand, perhaps better than anyone." Jack turned his head, looking over his shoulder as if to give the further point that he understood because of Ianto. "Just... don't deny yourself. It never works out well in the end."

Yes, that was the approval Jack so desperately craved from his Doctor. While Nine may have appeared and while Jack may have spent that first bit of time travelling with Nine? It was Ten he'd been the closest to -- even if there hadn't been a kiss yet between them.

"And you'll have help if you need it, on the Modulator, I mean," Jack replied. He looked back over his shoulder once more and nodded. "He needed some sleep." Once more Jack reached for the Doctor, unsure of what to say for a moment. In the end, he did that patented Jack move he'd used on Nine. He stepped forward and cupped the Doctor's face and kissed him gently.

Chaste coming from Captain Jack and that was saying something. And really, that kiss said it all by way of knowing the situation and how deep the bonds of friendship ran with Jack.

"Rub it in," he quipped playfully. So, you knew a bit more, Harkness; the Time Lord didn't expect you to let him forget it any time soon.

"It means that since I won't be the sort to make her choose, Jack. She's not meant to and it's cruel." Basically the same man yet different. What mattered was that this was the best thing he could do for both Nine and Rose. He'd agreed with Nine, after all, that it was his time with her and he wouldn't go swooping in and stealing her, even if he did love her. Even when he knew that Nine didn't quite realize he could love her yet. "And he deserves this bit of happiness, Jack." That other version of him? Not had much to be happy about aside from Rose, did he? Time War. Daleks. Being brought to this place. He deserved her.

Such a similar circumstance, yet different places to come at it. Jack danced with everything, the Doctor had convinced himself he'd forgotten about dancing and all the emotional trappings that worked in concert with it. "Can't really work out in the end at all, Jack." He meant between he and Remy, of course.

"Right," he replied about the modulator and left the comment about Ianto needing some sleep without response. Though, it didn't seem that Jack really wanted a response as he'd leaned forward and planted that very quick kiss on his lips, so very reminiscent of that farewell.

"Don't start," he teased, shaking his head. What else was he supposed to expect from his friend the Captain? "Snogs reserved for the end of it all, Captain." Smirk.

"Oh you know me, Doc," Jack said, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "I don't rub things in, ever." Oh a lie if there ever was one. And the smile on Jack's face didn't quite match the attempted innocent speech either.

"I never said you'd be the one who'd make her choose, Doctor," Jack said softly. "Even if you did, when has Rose ever been the sort to listen to what any of us said?" Never, that was when. "What about you?" he asked after a brief pause. "Don't you deserve to have that bit of happiness yourself?" Speaking as someone who tended to keep lovers at arm's length, Jack could get it. It'd taken a year with the Master to get Jack to admit he needed Ianto.

In that moment, Jack knew which one couldn't work out. He just looked at the Doctor and nodded, trying to let the other man know that he was here to listen -- even if he knew just how hard it was to talk about any of this. Hell, how long did it take jack to be able to say 'I love you' to Ianto? "One of them will," he said, equally cryptically. That is, providing this Doctor allow himself some happiness.

Jack held up both hands in mock surrender. "Not starting anything, I promise. Though, I think we can say that we're pretty close to 'the end of it' in this place." Jack smiled softly, giving the Doctor one final kiss on the cheek. He couldn't just leave it there, sorry Doctor. "Unless, of course, I can finish it." He waggled his eyebrows so the Doctor knew he was kidding then gave him a half-salute. "Just because he's back... and everything that entails..." Jack figured the Doctor knew exactly what activity Jack was going back to. "Come get me if you need anything."

"She'd have to choose Jack. Not like she's some sort of trivet we pass off every other Tuesday." No, they were possessive of her, those two Doctors even if Ten was taking a very hands off approach until recently. He'd asked people to watch her and take care of her and make certain she was safe. He'd tried to keep his distance and he'd kept his feelings to himself fairly well, he'd thought. He'd kissed her, but that could mean anything. Wasn't like he told her that in the future he loved her and he knew that she loved him. "I just won't give her the option of choice, I suppose. Keep sending her back to her Doctor if it comes down to it. Really, just avoid her all together if I have to." Oh, look at you Time Lord, was it really coming down to this?

There was a twinge there, when his friend asked the same question that ginger-headed thief kept asking again and again. Didn't he deserve a bit of happiness in the middle of it all? "There's work to do, Jack. We'll all go back to where we were and chances are none of us will even remember any of this place. So, it's not about chasing happiness, at least not for me. Not this time." He pushed his hands into his pocket with a small shrug. "Got plenty of things to look forward to when I get back, cloister bells ringing and all. You know how much I enjoy running up against the end of the Universe and all."

There had been that kiss to contend with that left the Doctor shaking his head again. "I think I'll leave you to your reunion for a while, Jack," the Doctor was already trailing down the hallway with a wave of his hand. The TARDIS doors had closed back up again and the Doctor's heart was tucked back inside safe and sound. You'd think it would make him feel better to know that Jack understood; unfortunately, when you've resigned yourself to a bit of self sacrifice in the name of the greater good, it's sort of difficult to feel on the up and up.

And Jack knew full well that Rose wouldn't take too well to being a woman 'passed around' between men. Rose was far too independent which was one of the reasons he loved her so. Amazing how easy it was to admit he loved Rose but the problem came when it was saying the same thing to Ianto -- ah, the wonders that was Captain Jack Harkness. "But therein lay the problem, Doctor," Jack said softly. "You're depriving her of the choice and making it for her. Tell me, how well does that usually work out where Rose Tyler is concerned?" he asked. Because the answer was not well at all.

Rose had returned to Satellite 5 after Nine had made a choice for her. That said something right there, didn't it?

Yes, Jack was going to ask the questions because that was his way. As far as Jack was concerned, the lonely angel did deserve a bit of happiness. Just because one was immortal didn't mean they couldn't take a bit of comfort in others every now and again. Jack did and he was all the happier for it because he'd go insane otherwise. They all needed contact, even the Doctor. It was just a matter of convincing the other man of such.

Jack's face broke into a bit of a smile at that. "Ah, running up against the end of the Universe. I wonder if some day it'll ever get old." Jack knew in his heart of hearts that it wouldn't. "There always seems to be good company for running out at the End of the Universe. Though let me tell you, I am never hanging on through timey-wimey like that again."

Again, he looked back and smiled. "Thank you," Jack said softly. He did, though, have to get in one parting shot before those TARDIS doors closed tight once more. "It's not so bad letting yourself open up every now and again. There's a difference between dancing and dancing." And Jack very clearly danced with Ianto. "Every now and then, you should let yourself have that extra bit. It won't kill you, I promise."
