Entry tags:!dropped, day 11, jack harkness, location: in town, sarah jane smith, the doctor (ten)

WHO: Jack Harkness, the Doctor [Sarah Jane, feel free to tag in whenever if you'd like!]
WHAT: Jack's trying to keep everyone safe. Because he needs his comfort zone and that's what he does best.
WHEN: Mid-morning; Day 11
WHERE: Around and about town.
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Active

Journal still open, Jack wandered aimlessly through the still-silent town. Somehow, though, it didn't seem as strangein the daylight. Then again, nothing seemed creepy or out of place when the sun was still climbing in the sky. Of course, in the daylight, Jack could see the wreckage everywhere.

Why would the Powers do this? Outside of the fact that they were sadistic bastards. But why destroy nearly every building in the compound and injure so many that it would be next to impossible to rebuild. The next thing they knew, they'd be dropping new buildings in the next day. They could change the weather so it made sense that they could do whatever the hell they wanted. Not a comforting thought.

Jack had left the gym about mid-morning, unable to just sit any longer. And so he walked, checking his journal often, and trying to figure out how to fix things.

The Doctor had just wrapped things up with the new arrival when he found himself snaking again through town. While meeting someone new had momentarily lifted his spirits, seeing the destruction of the town's buildings only served to render him back in his original state. He knew Jack was fine; but, what about Sarah Jane? He didn't have his journal to contact her and he still hadn't managed to get to the museum. What in the world was he doing? He had people he needed to take care of and yet here he was stalking around town examining buildings for surveillance equipment and clues about how to incapacitate their captors. The Doctor didn't want to harm the people who'd orchestrated this - he just wanted to put them in the same position. He thought a trip to the prisons on Galaxis Prime would do quite well for that, actually.

At the crux of the road the Doctor spied a very familiar grey coat. Not just a grey coat - a Greatcoat. It was Jack. His nose generally shoved into his journal. The Doctor wished that he might do the same. Why hadn't he gone there yet, again? Wincing, the Doctor tried to stop his mind from heading back down that path again.

"Well look who it is," his voice should have sounded a bit more cheerful - instead it sounded tired, distracted.

Sarah Jane had not slept well. She'd stayed at the remains of the gym, just in case someone needed an able pair of hands or a runner. She'd been dozing when Jack left, curled up near a pile of rubble that had been an outer wall, using her jacket as a pillow. Now, however, she was wandering the town, trying to stretch her sore muscles. Just about everything had been knocked to the ground. She hadn't seen devastation on such a scale in years - not since the Doctor had shown her "1980" as it would have been had Sutekh succeeded in his plans.

She caught sight of two figures a little apart ahead of her, and a relieved grin spread across her face. She hadn't seen or heard from the Doctor since before the earthquake. Although she knew he would have to be all right, seeing him walking about eased her mind so much. She started to jog forward, and felt pain ripple through her hip. Nothing debilitating, but it caused her to slow down to a walk. She didn't want them to worry, after all. "Doctor! Jack!" she called, raising an arm in greeting. Sarah Jane wanted nothing more at that moment than to wrap them both in a giant hug, just to prove to herself that they were real and were truly all right.

The Doctor looked like Jack felt, but without a mirror to look in, it was entirely possible Jack looked like death warmed over. Of course, given that he died the day before, the analogy seemed appropriate. He looked up at the sound of the Doctor's voice, a tired smile spreading across his face. Jack had been so worried about everyone else, he hadn't spared much thought for the Doctor -- other than knowing the man would come through okay.

"Doctor," Jack said softly, swallowing hard.

Then Sarah was there and somehow that seemed to lighten the mood -- even if Jack didn't feel much like smiling. "Sarah Jane Smith," he said with a half-hearted salute in her direction. The Doctor was closer, though, and Jack slid his glance to the other man. "How are you?" he asked out of the corner of his mouth, wondering just how much the other man would confide before Sarah arrived.

Jack's smile managed to garner a nod from the Doctor. He was feeling sapped, and any sort of exuberance he'd had was used earlier in the day with the new arrival. He couldn't walk about skulking with new people, it's not like he wanted to give them any more reason to be scared or depressed.

Perking the Doctor turned, catching sight of Sarah Jane waving her arm. He tried to make his features warm as he called out, "Sarah Jane Smith, you marvel, you!" Yet, as his tone was quite warm, the Doctor's face stayed still quite detatched.

'How are you,' Jack asked and the Doctor gave him a look made for poker. "Still kicking," he replied, his tone as warm as it had been with Sarah Jane, though his expression spoke volumes as to the level of wear the last day had for him.

"Come on," he said, taking the opportunity to close the gap with Sarah Jane further down the road. "Sarah Jane Smith," he mused. Greeting her demanded a hug, especially after such trying circumstance; as such, he extended his arms.

Sarah could tell as she approached that both men were deeply affected by what had happened yesterday. The Doctor's face hadn't lit up quite as much as it should have, and she knew firsthand just how hard Jack had been working, and how tirelessly. Experience told her the Doctor had been doing just as much, if not more. So, not too cheerful. But, seeing them both all right and walking towards her, calling out greetings, Sarah couldn't help but be cheered.

The Doctor held his arms out, and Sarah hurried forward, wincing slightly at the pain in her hip and leg as she did so. The pain could stuff it; this was the Doctor, and there were certain things more important than a strained or bruised muscle. She let herself be wrapped up in his embrace, flinging her arms around him as well. "I'm so glad you're all right," she said, the relief evident in her voice. She turned to Jack. "Both of you." When the Doctor let go of her, she turned to give Jack a hug as well.

Jack saw the look reflected in the Doctor's eyes and could feel something chill deep inside him. There was something in his look that spoke volumes, a look that made Jack wonder just what the Doctor had been through yesterday. Jack, however, didn't have time to ask as they had come upon Sarah Jane too quickly. Later, though, later he would get the Doctor alone and see what was going on in his mind.

The chill lessened, however, seeing the Doctor and Sarah Jane together. Hell, the last time the three of them had been in the same place the world had been about to end. Then again, one could say that the world was getting close to ending now.

"Ah, Sarah Jane," Jack said, wrapping her in a careful hug and giving her a loud kiss on the cheek. "You look a bit better than yesterday," he said. "Feeling better?"

The Doctor's intention had never been to upset Jack. In fact, had the Time Lord been more conscious of what his expression was saying he might have tried to take the edge off it a bit. Instead, Sarah's presence had wiped it away as quickly as it had come. That would have to do.

The Doctor kicked a rubber-toed foot into the dirt, looking off and over Sarah Jane's shoulder. It was evident that he had a lot on his mind - and what good Doctor wouldn't? There was disaster and chaos and death all about and none of it sat well with him.

The Doctor smirked a bit as Jack embraced Sarah and put a less than discrete kiss on her cheek. It was just his way, and maybe one of these centuries the Doctor would come to accept that.

"Yes, feeling better, especially now," she said, grinning. She gave Jack a look as he pulled away after kissing her cheek, one she gave Clyde if she thought he was being a bit too cheeky with her. Luke, of course, had never received one of those looks; he could never be accused of being cheeky, since he, to her knowledge, had no idea what that meant. But, the look lasted only a moment, as the sheer relief of being together with the two of them again brought another smile to her face.

"How are the two of you?" she asked, looking them both over with a critical eye. It was difficult to tell if they'd been injured yesterday just by looking at them. "Holding up all right?" She looked to the Doctor specifically. She knew how deeply something like this would affect him. Senseless violence always affected him, especially if he was unable to stop it happening.
