Who: Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester and Shannon Rutherford
What: Bad News
Where: Gym
When: Day 8, evening
Rating: R
Status: Active

He wasn't ready.

That much was clear as Sam hesitated outside the gym. Hell, he was practically pacing outside the door, trying to work up the courage needed to do what he needed to do. He found himself thinking a little liquid courage might have made things easier, but he quickly pushed that thought away. Buzzing while breaking the news of their father's death to his brother was not another thing that Sam needed or wanted on his conscience.

He ran a hand through his hair, fighting down a faint feeling of nasuea. He should've told Dean from the start. He should've laid it all out for him, but he'd thought he'd been doing the better thing by trying to shield him from it. Dean was always taking care of him, looking out for him, Sam had just wanted to do the same for him. Technically their father still had another year in Dean's timeline. Technically he was still alive, hadn't even deserted the woman in white job to go after the yellow eyed demon, maybe didn't even know how close he was to closing in on the thing that had ripped their family apart.

Maybe if he did tell Dean everything then when they found a way out of this place and he went back he'd be able to change the way everything had happened. Maybe he'd be able to save their dad. Maybe he'd be able to save Sam from getting stabbed in the back by Jake without having to sell his soul to a Crossroads demon. If anyone could or would, it would be Dean.

But what if he couldn't? What if he was faced with the same heavy weight Sam had been - was, if they ever got out of here - faced with knowing that if he couldn't get Dean out of his deal with the Crossroads demon in a year's time that he was going to loose his brother. His family.

Sam swallowed hard, shutting his eyes for a long moment and shivering. He'd just wanted to buy some time. He'd just wanted Dean to be Dean again without the lines of grief settled at the corners of his eyes and mouth, without the rock hard edge that had come from grief and guilt and had taken Sam a better part of a year to wear down.

He opened his eyes and clenched his jaw. Still, there was no way he was going to let the bastard on the journals tell Dean. No way he was going to let him twist up Sam's intentions so that they put even more space between him and his brother. Maybe this was the thing's way of driving them apart, by forcing Sam to tell him, but it was still better than the alternative of having their dad's death broadcast over the journals - more than it already had been - of Dean having to ask Sam if it was true and Sam not being able to say it wasn't. It'd been hard enough just glossing over details and lying by omission. Sam didn't have it in him to lie to his brother's face. Not about this.

Sam had stopped moving and the outside chill was creeping in through his clothing. He stared at the gym door for a moment longer and then forced his feet to move towards it. Inside the gym, things were eerily quiet and he forced back a sudden feeling of panic that he was too late as he called out his brother's name. "Dean?"

Dean was glad it wasn't as chilly as it could have been. Not as chilly as yesterday, that was for sure. It was almost pleasant except he knew that everywhere, behind closed doors and around corners, clones were up to mischief of some sort of another. Or worse. He couldn't begin to imagine what the people running this madhouse had in store for them if they were throwing clones into the mix. It was a pretty large testament to their power and ability to have cloning technology. Of course, he supposed they could be from a future time too.

Like Sam. Sam who was no doubt waiting for him at the gym to collect Shannon the second he stepped foot in sight with her in tow. Dean could just picture his brother standing around, tapping his foot with his arms folded and looking at a watch. Even though there were no watches. He'd be stewing, Dean was sure of it, because he had gone anywhere near Shannon. Always the protector, little Sammy.

But Shannon didn't seem to need much protecting. Not in that respect anyway. She knew what she was doing. He was still holding her hand as they neared the gym. Still making sure to be as close to her as possible in case someone or something tried to attack. He wouldn't put it past his clone, especially if the clone was anything like him, to try to sabotage his rescue attempt and make him out to be the bad guy in all of this. Who knew what the clones were up to. Apparently Sam wasn't sure either because he'd already said he couldn't trust Dean. Way to instill the faith, little brother.

"You okay over there, Private Pretty?" he asked Shannon as he reached with his free hand to pull open the gym door for her. Gee this felt familiar. He almost allowed a surge of guilt to flow through him but he shrugged it off. Sam had left Shannon in the middle of this chaos. Dean had picked up the pieces, right? And even if Shannon never thought of him the way she thought of Sam, he didn't have to feel guilty for what they'd almost gotten up to the last time they were here.

So why did he suddenly, without thinking about it, let go of her hand the second he saw the back of Sam's head in the shadows. "That you, Sam?"

Shannon was eager as hell to get to the gym. It wasn't cold, but it was still a little chilly outside and she was more than ready to be inside again. Beside that, Dean wanted to look at the extra journals she'd found the last time they had been there to see if he could figure out what that stupid Insider son of a bitch was talking about. That would give her every reason to get her mind off the actual things it had said to her; a distraction that would also make her useful - win, win situation.

The closer they got to the gym the more her mind wandered back to the last time she'd been there with him. The way the water slid down his bare skin; the way he looked at her. She could still feel him against her, inside her; his arms wrapped around her. His kiss still felt fresh on her lips when she looked at that building and the feeling of wet skin on skin was still locked in her sense memory as if it had just happened yesterday.

It took a lot of effort to keep her expression straight and unaffected. He didn't need to know what she was thinking and she shouldn't even be thinking it anyway, right? It was over. In the past, however recent, and needed to stay that way. Even if she couldn't stop thinking about it right then as they approached the entrance.

His voice pulled her out of her reverie and her cheeks colored as she looked up at him. "Huh? Yeah. Well, as okay as I can be, anyway," she replied, offering him a half-smile as he pulled open the door. As they walked inside, Dean dropped her hand and she furrowed her brow slightly, confused, until she saw the large figure in the shadows. Sam.

Shannon's heart sank. Dean was pawning her off. How stupid was she, anyway, to think that he would take care of her after she'd been such a bitch? He brought her here to drop her off with Sam and then Sam would take her back to the overcrowded museum and things would go back to being awkward and uncomfortable and cramped. Great. Rather than say anything, Shannon wrapped her arms around herself and looked down at her feet as she set her jaw. This was suddenly the last place she wanted to be beside the museum.

Sam turned around at the sound of his name, chiding himself for being so lost in his own thoughts that he didn't hear the gym door open. "Yeah, it's me," Sam said, stepping forward into a bit of dim light cast on the gym floor from one of the windows. He studied Dean's face, trying to decide whether or not this was the clone or the real deal. It bothered him that he couldn't be sure. That he hadn't been able to sense the difference earlier that morning.

His eyes moved over to Shannon who looked subdued somehow. He knew she'd been getting upset earlier because of what had been said in the journals about Sayid, that she'd even told him that she wasn't some kind of soldier when he'd told her she had to push through it. Part of him had wondered if he'd pushed her too hard but she'd seemed to bounce back, at least from what he'd seen in the journals. Still, as he moved closer, it looked like she'd been crying.

"Hey," he said, mostly because he wasn't sure what else to say. He swallowed, an unhappy frown settling on his face as he looked at the both of them. After a moment of silence he took a deep breath and shot Shannon an apologetic look. "Shannon, if you'll excuse us, I need to talk to my brother." He cleared his throat. "In private."

His eyes moved over to Dean as he nodded towards one of the offices at the far end of the gym.

Dean glanced over at Shannon who had all but folded into herself. She looked dejected and he felt a surge of frustration fill him. What was her problem now? She liked Sam. She hadn't said anything about not wanting to be around Sam. What was the deal with her getting sulky at the sight of him. He just could not understand her. Still, a part of him wanted to take back her hand or pull her into his arms, kiss her forehead and say it was all going to be okay. It probably was but he had figured out enough about her to know she wasn't interested in platitudes and shit. Would've been nice to have a little more figured out about her though.

His tone was a bit hard and irritable when he said, "Don't worry, Sam. She's not hurt." Not physically. But he suspected that things had happened that she wouldn't have told him even if he'd asked.

When Sam asked Shannon to excuse them, Dean rolled his eyes and huffed a sigh. He didn't feel like listening to the whole spiel about not breaking hearts and all that shit again. Not today. Today was about chaos and making sure all the girls who had been left by themselves while the men ran off to do macho men things were safe.

"Yeah, dude, I get that you want to do the mother hen routine on me again. You can tell me off for taking Shannon out of the museum or going anywhere near her with her standing right here. I think she can handle it."

Rather than reply to Sam's greeting, Shannon nodded and looked down, tucking her hair behind her ears. Dean's tone of voice was irritated when he assured Sam that she was all right and it took her a second to remember what they both had said about the way Sam had been treating Dean about the girls around here. Better she not interject; it wasn't really her place and she didn't want to, anyway.

The Winchester she wanted and couldn't have...and the Winchester she fucked but didn't prefer. Wow, this isn't awkward at all... she thought to herself with an inward frown. Being in the presence of the two of them at the same time was beyond uncomfortable, so when Sam asked if she'd excuse them to talk privately, she looked up again and opened her mouth to agree.

Only, Dean beat her to the punch with a shitty reply and Shannon took a deep breath, eyes back on the floor. "You know what? It's cool," she said, looking up at Dean. "I'll just go get started sorting through the other journals, okay? It's fine," she insisted. I don't want to literally be in the middle of a familial argument, especially if it's one about me, went unsaid entirely, although she thought maybe the uncomfortable look on her face and the way she shifted her weight awkwardly from one foot to the other might've given her away.

Sam's brow furrowed at Dean's tone, not sure exactly what he meant by saying that Shannon wasn't hurt. He looked over at Shannon and wondered if something had happened that he didn't know about. She wasn't looking at Sam and he was suddenly reminded of the day at the Carnival when she'd seemed to be hiding behind Domeki.

Sam's face softened into one of unhappiness as he realized that Dean thought Sam was there to get onto him about flirting with the girls again. Ordinarily he might have been a little unhappy with the fact that his brother had taken Shannon out of the museum with a clone version of him running around. But he could understand how the real version of his brother would want to keep her safe and might only trust himself to do it, despite the other people at the museum. If anything in that situation he would've been disappointed in the fact that Shannon had trusted a version of Dean so readily without really knowing whether it was the real him or not. Not that Sam was doing much better himself so far. Still, he didn't understand the frustration in Dean's voice. He hadn't been that overbearing had he?

Sam swallowed hard. "That's not why I want to talk to you," he said at the same moment that Shannon said she'd start going through the other journals. He didn't understand that statement either, but considering what he was about to do he didn't really think it mattered. What mattered was telling Dean the truth before the man in the journals did.

He fought the urge to say it would just take a minute, or that he just had to tell him something really quickly because it wasn't exactly the kind of news that could be given and dealt with in the span of a couple of minutes, or days, or weeks, or maybe even years. Sam ran a hand through his hair and shifted on his feet. "Dean, it's important."

Sam couldn't know how many times the words he'd spoken to Dean had haunted him even in the most innocent of situations. He found himself hindered in interacting with girls of any type because Sam's face continually popped into his mind, reminding him that he couldn't just run through this place and break hearts carelessly. He had never thought about doing that before Sam had mentioned it but it occurred to him now that he really was on a quest to do that. First Shannon, then Luna in a way and after her there was Lexie.

Except he felt vindicated with Lexie because Lexie wasn't someone else's girl interest. She had been all his own and she was the one that had stayed in his mind today. Even while he'd been with Shannon, of all people. Still he was torn. He was a cad, a user and he knew it. There had been too much play and not enough care for the girls he was interacting with until today. Which was why he was pissy with Sam. Sam had been right when Dean hadn't wanted to see it.

"Oh really?" he asked his brother in disbelief. He was not going to admit to Sam that he'd been right. He wasn't going to admit to Sam that he was worried now that after all he'd done, he might turn out to be the most dangerous thing there was in this glass bubble of a town.

"Fine, Sam. Lay it on me then." He stood his ground, unhappy that Shannon was going to walk away for any reason. He wanted her here. He wanted to fix whatever it was that had caused her to shrink into herself and look as though she were bucking for the award for most unhappy person here. Dean folded his arms over his chest and waited for the inevitable. He was going to get chewed out and he was going to endure it until it was over and then go away knowing he'd done the right thing in spite of what his brother thought because Shannon would be safe.

Taking a deep breath and looking anywhere other than at either of the Winchesters, Shannon hovered in place for a moment. Yeah, they were definitely about to get into it, from the sounds of things, and Shannon didn't want any part of it. That was the last thing she needed to be present for after the day she'd been having. She felt raw enough, still, as it was. No need to compound it knowingly and intentionally.

"Ooookay, so...yeah, I'll just be in the office," she said, finally looking back at Dean and giving him a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes because she felt too uncomfortable with the situation at hand to put the necessary effort in.

With that, she slunk away from the two of them, tucking her hair behind her ears, and headed back toward the locker rooms, flicking on her lighter as she went to illuminate her path. She hated that all she could see in her mind's eye as she went was Dean under the shower. Dean backing her into the wall. Dean pushing into her and -

"Stop it," she murmured to herself, bypassing the showers and making a beeline for the cabinet where the journals had been. ...only...they weren't there anymore. "Great," she snapped, dropping down into the chair at the desk and taking her head in her hands. Well, the brothers were busy; no one would notice if she had herself another good cry. Maybe this time it'd feel good to get it out.

"Really," Sam said, looking away from Dean. He didn't really understand the challenging look his brother was shooting him, but he didn't really feel in the mood to stare him down over it either. He looked back up at him when he said to lay it on him, wondering if he had any idea what he was asking for.

He glanced over at Shannon who obviously felt uncomfortable and suddenly wanted to ask her to stay. He knew it wasn't fair to her to be in the middle of it, that Dean wouldn't understand Sam telling a complete stranger than their father was dead when he hadn't even been able to tell Dean, but a part of him wanted Shannon to stay and tell him he'd done the right thing. He'd thought she'd understood that night when he'd told her the truth that he was just trying to do the right thing.

Instead he said nothing and watched her slip away before looking back at Dean. He stared at his brother for a long moment, feeling his stomach churn with nerves and fear.

"Dean," he said slowly. "I'm sorry, don't really know how to say..." He paused. "You've been reading the journals today, right?"

Dean rolled his eyes as Shannon chickened out and walked away. He kind of wanted her to stick around and tell Sam that Sam wasn't right about him. Of all the people in the equation, Shannon could stand there and say she wasn't being taken advantage of by Dean because she was as much a part of what had happened here in this gym as he had been. It wasn't like he'd forced her or even coerced her. She knew what she was doing at all times.

That she had decided to leave rather than defend him hit home a blow he had known was coming. He hadn't wanted to watch her choose Sam over him even though he knew she cared about Sam more than him. He just hadn't wanted to see it. Now that he had, he knew he could be done. He wouldn't bother trying to chase her anymore. He'd protect her if she needed him but that would be it. Nothing more.

He turned his eyes from Shannon's retreating figure and looked at Sam with a very tolerant expression. "Yeah, I've been reading the journals. Asshole Insider thinks he's cute. Most people think he's saying they're responsible for deaths they weren't a part of, yadda yadda yadda. What about it?"

He'd kept his finger on the pulse of that particular journal as much as he could even if he hadn't really interacted much with it or had time to read a lot today. He wanted to know why his father had been on that list. It made no sense because Dad was fine and if it was an issue in Sam's timeline, Sam would have told him. He was sure of it. So whatever that guy was on, it was just a power trip and nothing more. He'd even mentioned someone that Logan knew nothing about. Guy was an idiot and that was all.

Sam's stomach seemed to drop out from underneath him as Dean turned his full attention on him. His jaw tightened as he finally found himself alone with his brother in the expanse of the gym with no more time to put off what he knew was inevitable. Either it came from him or from the Insider.

"He mentioned dad," Sam said, his jaw still taught even as he said it. He might have sounded angry, but the truth was he was just trying to control his voice. He felt a wave of anger move through him that he even had to be doing this to his brother, wondering again if this had been the plan all along. "He's trying to tear us apart, Dean. He's trying to turn us against each other and I'm not going to let that happen."

His eyebrows moved together as he looked down at the gym floor. "I didn't mean to lie to you. I didn't know how to tell you. I tried to, but I just couldn't..." He trailed off before swallowing and looking back up at Dean, guilt stamped across his face. "I was trying to protect you."

His face softened into one of regret. "Dean, I'm sorry."

"Yeah, like I said, he's an asshole. He's just messing around. Don't let him get you going, Sam." He made a face, rolling his eyes at the Insider. Guy was seriously a bratty child. Still, maybe there was something to what he'd been spouting. Some of the people responding in the journals had been genuinely upset. And now so was Sam, apparently.

Dean's brows furrowed and canted his head. "What are you talking about?" he asked, looking at Sam confusedly. He wasn't sure he liked this. Why was Sam so serious? Whatever it was, if Sam was as upset about it as all this, it could not be good. He was suddenly reminded of the first conversation he'd had with Sam after arriving here. That had hit hard where it hurt on a few points.

Shifting on his feet, Dean watched his brother for a long minute. Did he want to know the answer to the question bouncing around his mind now? Did he really want to hear what he assumed Sam was going to tell him if he asked it? Sam trying to protect him sounded like it was pretty damned bad news. There didn't seem to be any getting around it though considering Insider was all for dropping bombs and watching them scatter.

Taking a deep breath, Dean unfolded his arms and let them fall to his sides. His voice was low and wary as he asked, "What did you lie about, Sam?"

Sam watched his brother anxiously, the seconds seeming to drag out into hours as Dean's expression shifted along with his body weight. He could almost see his brother figuring things out, the look in his eyes as wary as his tone.

"Dad," Sam said, feeling a chill move through him. He took a deep breath. "I lied about dad."

He took a step nearer to Dean, feeling the tickle of approaching tears behind his eyes. He blinked them back and cleared his throat. "There was an accident. We were hit by a semi, one of his demons. We were all in bad shape, but you..." Sam paused and glanced downwards, as he relieved Dean coding and him being completely unable to do anything to help his brother. "You were in a coma. They didn't think you were going to wake up. You were dying, Dean."

He sniffed and blinked again, looking back up at Dean. "Dad, he...uh..." Sam took a deep breath. "He made a deal with the demon. Him for you." He reached out and gripped the arm of Dean's jacket. "Dean, I didn't know what he was doing. I thought he was going after the Yellow Eyed Demon. I didn't know he was going to make a deal."

None of it hit Dean immediately. He stood there, his expression still somewhat confused and dark. His brows knitted together with the leaving sensation of frustration toward the Insider. "What?" he asked ineffectually as though he hadn't heard a word Sam had said. It was only a moment more before it hit him like a ton of bricks and it felt like the wind had been knocked out of him.

Taking a shaky breath, Dean stepped closer to Sam and took hold of the front of his brother's shirt with one fist. Less to be threatening and more to have a closeness he wasn't exactly sure he knew how to find with his brother other than to be somewhat aggressive like this. "What are you talking about, Sam?" he asked through clenched teeth, his voice controlled and even. His eyes were dull as he searched Sam's.

"I thought you said we killed the demon that killed Mom. I thought you said I pulled the trigger and Dad was proud. He looked proud. What do you mean he - what do you mean- ?" He couldn't even finish his sentence now. He was flooded with confusion and the sense that things were spinning out of the careful control he had worked so hard to maintain for most of his life because Dad had said that was the way things had to be done. He wasn't going to lose it. Sam hadn't said anything yet. Not really. Nothing to lose it over. He would be fine.

Dean reached out and grabbed Sam's shirt and Sam gripped Dean's arm more tightly as if to steady himself. Having his own words thrown back at him made him swallow hard. He hadn't been lying, he'd only twisted the truth. In his gut, he knew they were the same.

"It was a crossroads deal, Dean," Sam said slowly, searching his brother's face. "He was proud. When Jake..." He paused, shaking his head. "The demon managed to open a hell gate and somehow dad escaped. He got out. He was there when we needed him the most and he held onto the demon long enough for you to recover the Colt and pull the trigger." Sam took a shaky breath. "He was there, Dean. He saw it. He saw you."

Dean was fuming. Not because Sam had lied but because he wanted to hurt someone for the shit that Sam'd had to go through only to be tossed into this glass prison with a brother who didn't know the score and wasn't even a friend. If they wanted a divided Winchester duo, they certainly had it.

Dean watched his brother's expression falter. He felt his own begin to crumble but he'd be damned if he started tearing up over this. It hadn't happened in his timeline yet, right? No reason to cry over it. No reason to cry. No reason... He swallowed thickly against the lump that had formed in the back of his throat and his voice was a hollow rasp when he spoke.

"Dad made a deal with a crossroads demon. For me?" he asked and then cleared his throat a bit hoarsely. He let go of Sam's shirt and took a step back with a look of contrition for having gotten in his brother's face. He shook his head. "Dad's dead. That's what you're trying to say, Sam. Isn't it? Dad's... dead."

The hollowed out sound of Dean's voice made Sam's chest tighten. Still, there was nothing else he could do but nod. He felt a tear slide down his face and he reached up quickly to wipe it away. "Dean, I'm sorry."

He wanted to reach out across the distance between them and grip Dean's arm again, but Dean had moved and Sam thought the space was intentional. How could Dean not be upset with him for witholding this.

His jaw tightened as he gave his brother a concerned look. He was right. Telling him and seeing that look on his face was enough to know that this was the real Dean and not some shapeshifter or carbon copy. Not that he ever wanted to see that look on Dean's face again, let alone be the cause of it.

It was slow coming but it was hitting him now that he'd been lied to. He'd been protected from the truth like he couldn't handle it. Like maybe he was a scared little girl who couldn't deal with knowing that in some other timeline his father had died, proud of him. As much as he wanted to believe that, it didn't sound true either and he looked at his brother dangerously.

"What is it with you? You act like I need this big protective bubble around me. You're all over this 'Protect Dean from everything and protect everyone from Dean' deal. Am I a psychotic serial killer in your time or what, Sammy? Are you waiting for me to snap?"

He accentuated his frustration on that last syllable with a mock explosive gesture with his fingers in Sam's face. He shook his head and looked away. "I don't need you to protect me from shit, Sam," he said very quietly, his tone restrained as he clenched and unclenched his fists at his sides.

He looked up at Sam then and, with narrowed eyes, he searched his brother's face for some reason to believe this was his actual brother and not a clone. How could he possibly tell the difference after they'd been apart for so long. This couldn't be Sam, could it? Was he wasting his energy getting angry with a clone? He didn't want to think so but none of this sounded legitimate anymore. Or was that denial setting in?

Sam let out a surprised breath of air at Dean's response. Not because the emotion surprised him, but because he hadn't expected it to be directed at him. Not like this.

"No," Sam said quickly, his face darkening with frustration. "You're not a serial killer. I just...I didn't want to tell you unless I had to. I didn't see any reason to hurt you unless there wasn't any other way." He paused, taking a deep breath. "Dammit, Dean. You try to protect me whenever you can. Why can't I do the same for you?"

Sam flinched at Dean's gesture, his jaw tightening as his brother told him he didn't need protecting. Sam met his gaze as he seemed to be searching him for something. "What?" Sam asked, trying to read the look in his brother's eyes. "What, Dean?"

Dean wasn't dealing with Dad being dead. If that was true, he'd deal with it later. Maybe. It was much easier to deal with Sam who was standing right in front of him. He'd spent so much of his life trying to be like Dad and there Sam stood, so similar to the man without even making an effort. Yet he wasn't one hundred percent sure this really was his brother now. Oh yeah, denial was in full effect now.

"You didn't hurt me," Dean answered quietly. "Because it's not true." He swallowed and let his hands fall slack at his sides, looking directly into Sam's eyes as if challening him to make a move and prove himself to be a liar.

"What?" he repeated. "You gotta be kidding me. I know you're not Sam. You can drop the act now, okay? You're not fooling anyone, dude." He glanced over the replica of his brother and knew that he couldn't leave Shannon here with this clone by herself. No way. He was going to find her and get her out of here.

A pained look crossed Sam's face as he lowered his eyes to the ground. He shook his head. "It's true," he said quietly, looking back up at Dean. "I wish it wasn't, or that I'd been able to change it, but it is."

He felt a chill work it's way down his spine as Dean told him to drop the act. Sam's brow furrowed, his frustration coming to the surface. He reached out and grabbed Dean's arm again. "Dean, I'm not a clone. It's really me and I'm telling the truth."

He had no idea how he could prove it. "You've got to believe me."

"No way, man," Dean growled and swatted at Sam's hand. "That's exactly what one of them would say. Dad isn't dead. Dad is fine. He's in California on a hunt. I talked to him the day before I ended up here."

He eyed his brother's clone with matching frustration. What else could this damned place throw at him. Was this all they had up there? Hollow imitations of people trying to cause angst by announcing the death of loved ones? They'd have to do better than this to fool Dean. He wasn't going to just roll over and accept this.

"Give me a reason I should believe you, then. Because from where I'm standing you look exactly like Sam but you're talking nonsense. Just trying to get me riled up and fight you or something, right? The same way my clone went after me in the journals talking about Mom."

"I can't give you any other reason except that I'm really Sam and I wouldn't lie about this," Sam said, struggling to keep his voice normal. "Believe me or don't believe me. If you don't, so much better for you. Just as long as you don't believe it when it comes from the voice in the journals either."

He paused and sighed deeply shaking his head. "I don't want to fight you. All I want is..." He swallowed. "Dean, all I want is for us to be brothers again."

Dean threw his brother another incredulous look. Was he for real? Had to be. No way anyone else, including a clone, would be worried about their relationship as brothers at a time like this. He sighed and his shoulders slumped a bit in a slightly defeated pose. He was not going to fight anymore either. He just didn't have the energy to do it anymore.

"Alright, Sam. Whatever. I believe you. And if I turn out to be wrong and you hurt Shannon in any way I will hunt you down and remove your eyelids and testicles with a pair of pliers. Got me?"

His words might have sounded threatening but his tone was slightly amused. You either laughed, fought or cried under the type of pressure this day had dumped on them. Dean was choosing to laugh. Sort of. He was only smirking but he clapped his brother on the arm with one hand and started toward the doorway, deciding it was time to be going now. He paused then and glanced over his shoulder.

"Remember, eyelids and testicles with pliers, Sammy. Take care of her."

"I'm not going to hurt her," Sam said, a little taken aback by Dean's warning. "It's really me," he said again, giving Dean a small sad smile. Dean clapped him on the arm and then moved towards the door. Sam fought the urge to follow after him, knowing that he'd need his time alone.

Sam gave a small huff and nodded. "I will," he said. "You take care of yourself," Sam said, knowing Dean wouldn't let anyone else do it. "You know where I am if you need me."
