Day 8 AM, Carnival
Who: The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith
Where: The Carnival
When: Early - Mid Morning
What: Pillaging the ride controls
Rating: PG, most likely
Status: Complete

It had been an interesting morning thus far. The Doctor was currently slid halfway underneath of the large motor used to turn the Ferris Wheel in the center of the carnival. The motor, rusted and for the most part useless, was being cannibalized for it's gaskets, sprockets, and bolts. He needed lots of bolts. Without bolts there was no way to hold the casing of the sonic modulator together - and it seemed that the entirety of the large motor was nothing more than a dumping ground for bolts.

Reaching out to grasp his journal, the Doctor tilted it, squinting at the writings within. The whole place was going batty it seemed over the writings of this insider- person. On top of that there was talk of clones and of people nearly resorting chaos. The Doctor disliked chaos for a variety of reasons - top of which being it made a situation like this one even more volatile. Scribbling back a few notes he laid the journal down. Now, at least he had Sarah Jane as well. She would be an immense help, he was certain. There were people of action, like Sam and Dean for instance; people of analysis like that bloke Ryuzaki; and then there were people of thoughtful action, like Sarah Jane Smith. The Doctor could hardly think of anyone he'd like to see more. Sure, Jack was valiant and heroic and a fantastic follower (and as the Doctor was starting to see a fairly good planner as well); the Doctor was used to Sarah Jane and how she thought - and he knew she'd be invaluable to the team. A team, which oddly enough, included Ianto.

Tapping the toes of his sneakers on the concrete the Doctor continued his work harvesting spare bits and parts from the motor."I like Chinese, I love their tiny little trees," The Doctor mumbily sang, his mind going to a happy Monty-Python-Infested place. He'd have to remember to keep an ear out for Sarah Jane. Or one of those clones. Or Jack sneaking up on him with some sort of prank at heart. This, when it came down to it, wasn't so bad at all. It wasn't like he was fighting the Daleks with a toothbrush or thwarting the Sontarans with a copy of Moby Dick. No, he was just putting together a Sonic Modulator to help them all escape the glass cage.

This he could do with both eyes shut.

It WAS Sarah Jane! The Doctor's hearts jumped and as soon as she signaled the welcome nature of the hug, he was most happily wrapping his arms around her. It was just the perfect way to greet such a good friend, wasn't it? Trying his best not to leave grease and bits behind the Doctor was grinning ear to ear, even as the hug ended.

"Sonic modulator," he said, wishing he had the thing with him. Currently it was back in the museum waiting for some additional bits and scraps to be applied.

"Well, Vas Captio - glass cage. We're surrounded by a glass wall, Sarah Jane," he said quite matter of factly, "Hence the sonic modulator, I plan to shatter the glass." He realized, as her questions continued it might be best to let her get them out in one long string and then try to answer them once she was forced to take a breath.

"Trap - certainly, a place for experiments in one form or another. Secondly, we haven't a clue who's running this show. C - or third.. or maybe a little bullet point, whoever went to all this trouble is also responsible for the journals. I'm not quite sure if it's a psychic network, or just a more ingenious use of transmitting paper, but they seem to be quite well connected."

The Gallifreyan pondered the journals a moment later - interconnected and probably feeding all into one main source. It would explain how that insider kept such close tabs on everyone. Well, that an what the Doctor speculated to be a sort of radar that radiated from the glass itself. It would make a rather effective surveillance system actually, the glass; being both able to capture and modulate sound.

"You're not hurt or anything are you? There were weevils about until recently," he remarked still quite enthused to have her. "As to who is responsible, I'm thinking it might be a member of the Trickster's brigade - makes sense, they do like fooling with both time and space, don't they?"

Sarah nodded as the Doctor explained what he was doing. Apparently, she wasn't the only one who'd had her toys taken from her. It was just like the Doctor to build up a new one, though. He had a plan, and that cheered her up even further. "How thick is the glass, do we have any idea?" she asked when he paused for breath. "Depending on the thickness, we might do some real damage to the buildings inside as well as the glass itself." She was already saying "we", though. Whatever the Doctor needed of her, she'd be glad to do.

"What sorts of experiments?" Sarah asked. She thought back to the words of the other woman who'd been with her in the woods. GLaDOS had mentioned experiments at the science center where she was from. Perhaps she was involved in all this, playing a victim to better observe?

"I'm fine, aside from a bit of a headache," she said. "No sign of Weevils, except...that body I wrote you about, Doctor. The face was torn to pieces. Nothing recognizable left. Could the Weevils have done that?" Sarah Jane's eyes widened at the mention of the Trickster. "Again?" she asked. "Oh, I don't think I could handle that again. I don't think Maria could handle that again." She shook her head, then looked at the Doctor seriously. "He did say he wanted you, Doctor. He wanted to use me to get to you."

"Difficult to say. Though, it's not the thickness I'm worried about - the glass is either silicon or possibly titanium or even adamantium bonded. No amount of sheer force can break it; but a very precise frequency..." He let Sarah put the rest of it together.

"Seems like there's a new one every few days. They've cooked up survival sort, and nudity, and confinement, and today is clone day," he said it all quite matter of factly. "Though, I don't get the sense they're out to kill anyone intentionally. A full pharmacy, food, and even doctors - that doesn't add up to murder in my book," he took a spot leaning up against a nearby support.

"That body..." His thoughts trailed off on him. "It could be Martha," he said that quietly, looking from his shoes back to Sarah Jane. He wasn't quite certain what he was supposed to do. He didn't even know if the body was her or not. Arms reflexively wrapped around his middle as he tried to make himself think harder - think of reasons it couldn't, wouldn't be Martha. He was grasping at straws.

"I have this feeling, Sarah, that this place is very much about all of us. That everyone here is here for some sort of purpose - and that back in their universes they all had some sort of purpose - something important." He was ramping up for a long bout with rambling. The only thing that tempered his response was half of him was still stuck back on Martha.

Sarah Jane nodded. She had a basic idea of what the Doctor meant. Luke would have a far better idea of exactly what the Doctor was doing, but, thankfully, he didn't seem to be here. She raised an eyebrow at some of the more questionable experiments the Doctor rattled off. "Nudity?" she said, tone incredulous. It was good to hear that there were resources in this place, wherever it was. They wouldn't starve.

Sarah felt an ache in her heart as the Doctor spoke about Martha. She'd only met the woman briefly, but she'd been so full of life, like all of the people who traveled with the Doctor. "I couldn't tell," Sarah said, a twinge of regret in her voice. "But I'm sure it couldn't have been. Martha's more than capable of keeping out of danger." She wasn't sure how much more to say. From what he'd said in the journals, he was surprised that she and Jack had met. Meaning he hadn't gone through the Dalek invasion yet.

She wasn't quite sure what to say to his next thoughts. "If it is the Trickster, there's no purpose beyond his own amusement," she said darkly. She looked up at the Doctor. "There aren't any children here, are there?" she asked. The thought of Luke, Maria, or Clyde being stuck in a glass cage would break her heart.

The Doctor almost laughed as Sarah reacted to the nudity experiment. "I'd imagine that one was intended to stir up those with intimacy issues," the Doctor rambled.

The Doctor let his attention flit back to the body - what could be Martha's body. For once, the Doctor needed assurance, and Sarah Jane was there to give it to him. While she was sure that it couldn't have been, he knew it could. It really could.

"She is quite capable..." The Doctor replied thoughtfully. She'd been with UNIT, and though she was a proper doctor for them, he had a feeling she'd trained quite well in aspects of survival.

"Children? Goodness no..." There were people who thought like children, but all seemed to have rather adult forms.

"Thank you, Sarah Jane," he said, referring to her calming demeanor. He was like a rocket - always shooting off in one direction or another, and Martha being missing was more then enough to cause him to veer off course. Sarah had straightened him out right as rain.

"That's got nothing to do with intimacy and everything to do with public decency," Sarah protested, although she smiled as she said it. She was quite glad she hadn't been around for that particular experiment. She very much doubted anyone would want to see her naked at this point in her life.

"More than capable," Sarah Jane insisted, putting a hand on his shoulder and giving it a good squeeze. "She's extraordinary, and you know it."

She breathed a sigh of relief when the Doctor said there were no children here. "You've no idea how pleased I am to hear you say that, Doctor," she said. "I was afraid my son might be here, too." If he was from some point prior to the Dalek invasion, it meant he didn't know about Luke yet. "I've not told you, have I?" she said, cheering up despite the circumstances.

The Doctor wouldn't have expected any other reaction from Sarah Jane, no matter how much he'd tried to rationalize it to her. Though, he was quite certain that had she been here the day of the nudity, those running this place very well might have chosen her as one of their subjects.

'More than capable,' Sarah Jane said, and the Doctor nodded in the affirmative. This could just be another experiment itself - to see how he'd react if something happened to Martha when he was off being careless. It could be. Could be.

"Your son? You have a son?" The Doctor smile turned from quizzical to nearly brimming with happiness. "Oh! What's his name then? Tell me all about him!"

Mentioning Luke had the desired effect on the Doctor - it got him thinking about something more positive. A brooding Doctor, Sarah knew from long experience, was an inactive Doctor. He needed something positive to keep his energy up. And Sarah always enjoyed bragging about her son.

"He's called Luke," she said, grinning widely. "He's 14, or thereabouts, appearance-wise, but he's barely a year old. He was engineered by an alien race called the Bane - have you ever heard of them? - as some sort of archetype for their experiments. One of my neighbors ended up rescuing him without realizing what she was doing, and after we'd sorted out the Bane, he came to live with me." It sounded rather odd in the telling, but if anyone would understand it, it was the Doctor. "Oh, Doctor, you'd love him. He's brilliant, absolutely brilliant. And he loves learning everything he possibly can about everything." She shook her head wistfully. "Reminds me of someone I know." She gave the Doctor a very pointed look.

"What about you? Were you traveling alone when you ended up here?" she asked. She wanted to figure out when the Doctor was in relation to her own time as best she could. She knew it was important not to mention future events too much - Blinovitch, or something like that, she'd never quite gotten the hang of the whole meeting future selves or past selves thing - or else it might affect what had already, for her, happened.

Sarah Jane turned absolutely alive when she mentioned Luke, and she was stunning. The Doctor had seen her excited and enthused - but this was different, special.

He listened intently, trying to force through that thick skull of his as much of what she was telling him as possible. "The Bane?" The question was meant to sound as cloudy as it did. Sounded oddly familiar but the Doctor wasn't going to go off and try and babble about it. He wished he had his TARDIS, it seemed he thought better in there. Well, specifically better in the cloisters, but that was beside the point.

"Leave it to you to have a brilliant son," the Doctor beamed, "The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, you know," Despite what Luke's potential might be, it was Sarah Jane who was unlocking it, and that was marvelous.

"Oh, I was traveling with Donna just before I wound up here. Have you met her as well? I've been telling everyone I'd been taken from London; though, we had literally just stepped in to the TARDIS with the whole thing turning mauve," insert a tongue click here. "So, I'd imagine the universe is about to end." Well, now that was out of the way he could go back to grinning again. "So, no time like the present to working on getting us all out of here, yes?"

Sarah couldn't help grinning at the complement. "He's far more brilliant than I am, and thank goodness for that. He's a bit awkward about social cues, but he's got some very good friends to help him there. When we get out of here, I'll introduce you to him...to them. They'd love to meet you in person." She hoped he wouldn't be too upset that she'd told stories about him, but most of them had been relevant to whatever they'd been working against at the time.

"Mauve?" Sarah asked. She couldn't recall the TARDIS ever going mauve when she'd traveled with him. Perhaps it was part of the new design. "Yes, I've met Donna," she said, smiling fondly at the memory. "I quite liked her." Her expression darkened for just a moment as he mentioned the end of the universe. While that was a common problem for anyone associated with the Doctor, given what Sarah Jane had just been through, she couldn't help but think he wasn't that far off from her, time-wise. She nodded firmly, seeing the grin back on his face. It was infectious, and she found herself smiling as well. "Let's get to it," she said. "Can't have the universe ending without us, right?" She clapped her hands together. "What can I do to help?"

Having an old friend about in times like this was exactly what the Doctor needed. Somehow, he couldn't help but think that the people behind the curtain were doing him some sort of favor. Intuitively, he supposed, he ought to be upset about the presence of Sarah - she had commitments and responsibilities and a life; but, they'd taken on worse than whomever supposed they were in charge here - and as a teammate, it was hard for the Doctor to think of anyone better.

"Mauve, universal sign of distress - didn't we ever encounter mauve?" The Doctor's brow furrowed. Perhaps they hadn't.

"Well, the modulator is mostly completed; what these people need is something completely different than something to break the wall, Sarah Jane. Some of them are actually starting to lose hope we'll get out of here at all." The Doctor took a moment to pause. "I know as well as anyone the odds as to whether or not the modulator will break the glass are 60/40 at best. So, if it fails, Sarah, I'm going to need all the help you can muster picking this lot up by their bootstraps."

Another pause and a patented Doctor grin to follow, "Well, that and calibrating the modulator."

"Don't think we ever did mauve, no," Sarah Jane replied, brows knit together as she tried to remember.

The situation was grim enough that people were starting to lose hope? "How long have you been here?" she asked. Clearly, more than the few hours Sarah herself had been here. A day or two, possibly more? Surely it couldn't have been longer than that. She offered the Doctor a warm smile. "I'll do my best," she said. "We'll make it out of this. We've come through far worse, after all. There isn't a trap or cage in existence that can hold you for long. People here just don't know you well enough." She squeezed his shoulder, hoping to lend him some of her optimism and strength. Yes, it looked bleak, given what little she knew about this place, but how many seemingly impossible situations had she been in and come out all right in the end? Not even the Daleks could keep people at bay when the Doctor was around and seemingly in their clutches.

"I might actually be useful with calibrating things now, you know," she said, grinning right back. "Between dealing with Mr. Smith and K9, and helping Luke with projects, I've gotten quite handy." She thought of all the things in her attic that would be useful, not to mention the things that had been in her handbag, and sighed. Then, she shook herself. Dwelling on what they didn't have wouldn't help at all.

"Oh, Really?" The Doctor scratched his head. "I guess I didn't have the lights installed then, I suppose. Useful warning system, especially if somehow the cloister bell manages to get knocked off or something."

"Eight days, counting today," he said quietly. It'd been over a week. He'd hoped to have them all out in three days. What was taking him so long? He knew what is was, he'd been getting distracted by the people and the mysteries. He wasn't used to having to care for the well being of the people he was there to save. No, he did his job and then moved on. He never waited. In this case he was stuck here, and he was getting attached.

Sarah Jane was like a walking charger for his batteries. Any pessimism that had managed to leak from the journal to his mind was washed away by her kind words and gentle smile. He was remembering quite well why he liked her so much.

"Fantastic!" He beamed. "Because the less time we spend working on calibrations, the more power we have to actually work on the glass." He was feeling so refreshed right then that he felt he might be able to take the wall down himself in one fell swoop.

"What do you say we relocate to the Museum? You haven't been there yet, have you? It's where I've been staying. Jack and Ianto are there, too. It's been a bit crowded as of late, though, I'm sure we can find you a place if you're interested." He hoped she was.

Sarah Jane gasped at the news. Eight days? The people holding them all in this glass cage had to be clever. But, she knew the Doctor would find a way to beat them. If she could help him rally the others, with everyone's combined skills, she knew they'd manage to escape.

"Sounds good to me, Doctor," she said. It would be nice to have a place to bunk down among friends. She counted Captain Harkness as a friend, despite his working with Torchwood, because of how he knew the Doctor. And, after what had happened with the Daleks, she could count Ianto Jones among her friends as well. "Are they from your future as well, Doctor, or from your past?" It would be helpful to know, so she didn't accidentally let anything slip. "Is it far to the museum?"

The Doctor caught Sarah's gasp and shaking his head he tried to smile a little, "They've been fairly good at distracting me, I suppose." He guessed that might be some sort of explanation. After all, they had cooked up just enough social discord to keep him from being able to keep his sights set on what was important.

"Brilliant," his grin brightened a little. "Future from what I understand. Hadn't quite found out when Martha had come from, though." The Doctor's nose crinkled a little recalling Jack's absolute glee at 'knowing more than him.' He let Jack have that small victory just this once.

"We're not too far now, perhaps just a few minutes walk, you up for it?" He was already gathering up the bits and pieces here and there, carefully placing them in the middle of a towel he'd brought just for that purpose.

"Allons-y?" He extended an arm.

"We'll have to ask when we find her," Sarah Jane said. She made a mental note to talk to Jack and compare notes. She caught the nose crinkle - the Doctor had done it before as well, when she'd known him years ago - and recognized it as mild annoyance. She couldn't suppress a smirk at it. It was rare anyone got a one-up on the Doctor.

The smirk turned into a grin as he extended an arm. "Quite up for it," she said. She linked her arm through his. Nothing here could bother her too much. Not now that she'd found her best friend again. Whoever had brought them here was in for quite a surprise.
