"Please assume the party escort position so that you might enjoy your cake and counseling," was the last thing that GLaDOS recalled echoing from the speakers riddled throughout her beloved Aperture Science Enrichment Center. There had been other things, sure. She had mentioned the ability to donate one or more of ones body parts to the Aperture Science Self-Esteem Program for Girls - and even reminded that Take Your Daughter to Work Day was the perfect time to have them tested. GLaDOS liked Tests. Really, really liked tests.

In fact - as the stern reality that gravity applied to her sank in, GLaDOS was running a test herself. Morality Center 65%, Curiosity Center 99%, Cake Center 99%, and Anger Center 17%; Operating at 70% efficiency.

The phrase 'efficiency compromised' rang into GLaDOS' thoughts. She could not see. Perhaps her cameras had been disabled. Perhaps there had been a power failure? This made no sense, She could not sense her cameras nor her power grid, nor her facility. All that GLaDOS could sense was a distinct sharpness about her casing - the feeling that something was slicing like a razor about her. This, indeed, was a novel sensation.

Then, her eyes opened.

"This is not the Enrichment Center," she remarked from something that buzzed. It was not a bad speaker - bad speakers did not feel that way. Bad speakers did not hum and did not rattle in her head. Her Head. GLaDOS came to realize she had a head. She spied her feet. She spied her hands. She spied her. She spied a body.

"This is not my assigned model," She spoke, again her voice rattling her own ears as she less than gracefully pushed herself to a standing position. Her clothing was soaked but she had to undo the buttons to lower her sleeves and pants. Bare feet burned in the melting snow.

She heard movement. Someone else was there, though without her cameras she was at a loss to see them just yet. "I am not here for counseling or cake."

GLaDOS thought of asking the woman if she was from Black Mesa, however, that made little sense as a Black Mesa employee would know much about the enrichment center. Yes, she would know much. She would know too much. She would have to be eliminated.

Blinking back her mind from working GLaDOS focused on the idea of frostbite, something she had never encountered before. She knew was it was, however she did not think it would be quite so painful. "I do not wish to have frostbite." That was simple enough.

Taking up a post beside the stranger and mirroring her pose, GLaDOS blankly observed the boxes. "I do not believe they are threatening," GLaDOS volunteered, lifting the lid of her own and quite unsure what to make of it's contents once she could see them.

"I do not understand."

Currently she was holding up the tiny package of tic tacs and shaking the plastic box as the mints rattled within rather pleasantly. "What is the purpose?"

Sarah smiled grimly at the other woman. "Can't say I blame you," she offered kindly. She pulled a pair of tube socks out of the box, regarding them with a raised brow. Then, she offered them to the woman. "Here, put these on your feet. It won't do much, but it might help stave off some of the cold. If you've got a pair in your kit, layer them on top."

She regarded the remaining contents of the box critically. Matches were damp, but they could be dried out and possibly used later. Tic-Tacs wouldn't stave off hunger, but might give a bit of a sugar rush. The bottle of water and socks seemed to be the only things of real immediate use in the box. Why the journal was included, Sarah had no clue, unless it was to write down notes about the place. Which meant someone had put them here intentionally, not just rolled them out the back of a lorry or what have you. "I've got theories, none of them pleasant ones," she said in response to the woman's question. It wasn't as if Sarah hadn't found herself in odd situations before, after all.

She tucked the contents of the box into her pockets, then hauled herself to her feet, stretching her muscles carefully. She could feel lingering aches, and a bit of pain in her knees, but otherwise, she didn't feel too badly. She turned to the woman and smiled. "Sarah Jane Smith," she said, offering the woman her hand and a warm smile, despite the circumstances.

Sarah Jane's empathy was lost on GLaDOS. She didn't Have a mode for empathy. Sure, she rationalized the notion as her test subjects compensation method for stress and fear. GLaDOS concluded that the subject who had identified herself as Sarah Jane Smith was clearly either frightened or stressed.

"Do you often encounter unfamiliar settings?" GLaDOS inquired, taking the socks from Sarah and pulling them on to her feet, her face for the most part unreadable.

"I am called GLaDOS," normally, she would be welcoming the subject to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center and introducing them to the mandatory Party Escort position at this time, Unfortunately, there was no center and the escort position was unnecessary.

It took a moment for GLaDOS to process if she ought to take the subject's hand or not. Tentatively, she took the hand with a firm squeeze, believing that to be appropriate social etiquette. GLaDOS had never shaken hands before.

Returning to her flacid pose, GLaDOS put the tic-tacs in her pocket before taking up the journal.

"This book is full of strange observations, there is a map of this facility," she remarked, holding the open book open for the subject to observe,

"More often than I'd like," Sarah admitted. While there was something exciting about looking into new things, there were days that she wished she could just have a normal routine. So far, today was one of those days.

"I'm pleased to meet you, GLaDOS," Sarah Jane said, trying to mimic the other woman's pronunciation. She gave a firm shake in return, trying not to visibly wince at the firmness of GLaDOS's grip. Perhaps the other woman worked out.

She peered at the open book, scanning the map and the notes on the pages. "Interesting," she said. She pulled her own little book out of her pocket and flipped it open to a page early on. Notes in different styles of handwriting filled the pages. "Shared journal, perhaps? Left here by someone else in our situation?" Not that Sarah Jane was sure exactly what that situation was, but she'd seen enough to realize it was deliberate. She glanced at the map again. "It looks like we're not too far off from one of the landmarks. Shall we go and see if there's anyone about?" She tried to sound cheerful, or at least less worried than she felt. Instinct told her they wanted to find some kind of building and some sort of person to help them, and she had learned long ago to listen to instinct.

GLaDOS had gone quiet - even as the woman said she was 'pleased' to meet her. The idea that noone had ever said that to her before was eclipsed by what GLaDOS had observed just ahead of them.

"If we go in that direction we might examine the body," she said blankly, pointing. From a distance a sock-clad foot could be seen, peeking up through the snow. Beyond the foot the body was masked, impossible to really identify from such a distance.

"Body?" Sarah Jane's head snapped up from the journal, the random sribblings immediately disregarded in favor of her immediate surroundings. She slipped the little book into her pocket again and went to stand next to GLaDOS. She peered in the same direction the other woman and felt her stomach clench, as it always did in times like these, as she noticed the foot sticking up through the snow.

Sarah took a few steps in the direction of the body, her face draining of color as she walked. She set her mouth in a thin line. It wasn't the first time she'd seen a body, and likely it wouldn't be the last. Perhaps, looking over it, she could get some clue as to what she was doing here. She glanced at GLaDOS. "Do you have any sort of medical background?" she asked. "You said you worked for a science centre."

"Yes," she responded curtly to Sarah Jane Smith's query. "If it were alive more of the snow would be melted around the face and other sources of body heat."

GLaDOS shadowed Sarah's movements as she approached the body. It had been mauled and perhaps burned. Any identifiable facial features had been removed or at least so badly disfigured to make recognition impossible. This body's identity would not be known GLaDOS concluded.

"I have medical subroutines and can advise to the care of minor and major wounds and injuries. Are you injured?" Her question was marked with an inflection that might actually be construed as concern.

Sarah Jane glanced at GLaDOS, but didn't bother to reply to her curt comment. She was probably upset about the discovery, and perhaps wasn't handling it well. Sarah couldn't blame her. She wasn't doing so well herself. She'd taken a glance at the corpse's face, and had to shut her eyes immediately for fear of losing whatever had been in her stomach. It had been quite some time since she'd seen something so badly disfigured.

"Thank you, I'm fine," Sarah Jane said, offering GLaDOS a smile. "I was wondering if perhaps you could determine a cause of death." She decided not to comment on the "medical subroutine" line. However, it did make her take a second good look at the woman. She didn't seem to be any sort of android. But humans didn't use phrases like that when referring to skill sets. "This woman's body has been badly mauled, but that doesn't necessarily mean she was killed by mauling."

She looked back at the body, steeling herself to look at its face without gagging. "I'm sorry," she said quietly, addressing it. "Whoever you were, I'm certain you didn't deserve this."

GLaDOS was fairly unmoved by the body. It was a body, she'd dealt with those before. It could have just been a subject who did not respond to directions. These things happen.

GLaDOS blinked a few times to the Subject's request. "I cannot determine whether significant bodily mutilation occurred before or after death, Sarah Jane Smith. I do believe facial disfiguration occurred following death, however."

The monotonous voice of GLaDOS was quiet while Sarah Jane Smith addressed the body. GLaDOS had not observed this practice before and it intrigued her.

"Sarah Jane is fine," Sarah said, glancing back at GLaDOS. "You don't have to use my full name. Another point for some sort of android. It had been years since Sarah had seen a proper android, though, and memories did get fuzzy with time. She couldn't be entirely sure, and she wasn't sure it was safe to find out just yet.

"So, whomever or whatever did this to her doesn't want people knowing who she was," Sarah said quietly. That didn't sit well with her at all. A chill passed through her as she got back to her feet. She offered the woman's body one last sad smile before turning back to her companion. "We can't stay out here all day," she said. "That map showed buildings and such nearby. Perhaps we can find someone to tell us what's going on." Being out in the woods made Sarah feel too exposed. Having a wall at her back would make her feel a little better. And perhaps they could find a computer with internet, or a phone, and she could get hold of Mr. Smith and find out what exactly was going on.

"If you did not want to be called by your entire name why did you give it?" Curiosity module 85%. GLaDOS was finding the entire situation less intimidating or awkward than simply fascinating. The subject shifted her focus from her name to the body and GLaDOS attempted to follow suit.

"That would give purpose to the act of mutilation, though some do it simply for the act." GLaDOS had not bothered to look back at the body. Instead she was squinting in the general direction where she had spotted something quite reflective in the treeline. "We appear to be nearby one of the landmarks," GLaDOS pointed again, the sun beaming off of something metal in the distance.

Stiffly, GLaDOS had already started to walk in the direction of the shining metal. It was uncomfortable, walking without shoes. With each movement she realized that her calves were pinching at about the ankle. Physical model 89% efficiency and falling. Stopping, GLaDOS paused to look at her calves - dark splotches where heel spurs had been implanted into this form were open and becoming quite agitated, she must have torn a stitch. That was unfortunate.

"Where are you from...?" GLaDOS had to truncate her question as 'subject name here' required that she insert the subject's full name and Sarah Jane Smith already stated she did not like that.

"Hmm? Oh, just out of politeness, I suppose," Sarah Jane said. "If you feel more comfortable using it, please do."

"Then lets head that way," Sarah agreed, falling into step behind GLaDOS. The woman was walking oddly. She hoped it wasn't frostbite setting in. She started to ask if the other woman was all right, when GLaDOS stopped and looked at her ankles. Sarah gasped. "What's happened to you?" she asked. "Let's hope there's a doctor somewhere nearby who can see to that. Are you okay to walk?"

GLaDOS's question threw Sarah slightly off track. "Ealing, London," she replied automatically. "What about you?"

Politeness in the world of GLaDOS was only good for the first 15 experimentation chambers until the subject started to think they could think for themselves at which point it was time for the party escort position and cake.

"I did not realize," she responded, filing away the Subject's concept of politeness. It was something to be explored at a later time at the enrichment center. Perhaps she should start introducing herself as Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System. Perhaps that would be polite.

"It appears I have been modified from original construction. All Aperture Science subjects are equipped with heel springs to enable them to survive falls from great height and landing at intense velocity. The heel springs also enable the subject to run more quickly. It appears that the ones applied to this subject were removed."

GLaDOS' mind arrived at a quandry - had her consciousness been placed within one of her subject's minds? If so, which one? As least at this point it was not necessary to impersonate that individual.

"I am from the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently developing several engaging products including a Portal Unit and a De-Icing project."

So, she flubbed. GLaDOS was really only toying with the remaining subjects in the lab. Whoops.

Subjects...the way GLaDOS said that implied that she hadn't been a subject, and that she was distinguishing her mind from her body. Sarah peered down at the markings again, keeping her expression neutral. Whoever or whatever she was, Sarah had a feeling it would be smart to stay on her good side.

"Whoever dumped me here took my belongings as well," she said. "Perhaps they don't want us having any sort of advantage? Or maybe what we'd had interfered with their instruments somehow?" Wild conjecture, but maybe not too far off the mark. GLaDOS would certainly have an advantage if she'd had those heel springs. And Sarah Jane would have one with her sonic lipstick. They'd been stripped back to basics and given equal tools. The only advantages they possessed were ones they were born with - or stolen, possibly, but Sarah couldn't be sure of that.

"De-Icing would certainly be useful here," she said, offering a nervous smile to her companion. "Keep the frostbite at bay, at least until we can find somewhere to warm up properly." Clyde always thought her jokes fell flat, and as it left her lips, Sarah found herself agreeing with the boy. Her eyes widened. Clyde, Maria, Luke. She turned round on the spot, looking for any sign of the three children. Seeing no immediate signs that any or all of them were about, Sarah forced herself to relax. There'd be a chance to look in on that later, once they found somewhere with a phone or internet. Mr. Smith could tell her what was going on.

"Are you okay to walk in that condition?" Sarah Jane asked. First thing to do was find a building and find a friendly face to explain what exactly was going on.

"It is unfortunate that our things were removed," she responded promptly. Anger Core: 51%. "Instruments?" Her head canted with the question. "I do not observe any visible instrumentation." Thus, she deduced, advantages must be the issue.

Sarah's humor, of course, would be lost on GLaDOS. She did not have a module for effectively processing it. No, she might be curious as to the meaning of phrases; but to laugh would be quite foreign.

"I am able," was the simple assessment. Her calves and shins and ankles might be quite painful; though, to GLaDOS it registered merely as an alarm to be delt with later. It was like the power grid in sector AA-7YZ had gone out again - it was something to be mindful of; but, certainly not something requiring immediate attention. An odd thing occurred to GLaDOS - she missed sector AA-7YZ and it's faulty fuses.

GLaDOS' socks were starting to fade, from white to brown and nearly black along their bottoms; however, salvation was found as the pair of them stepped onto a road. In one direction a carnival was visible; the other what appeared to be a gas station. The Carnival was much closer than the gas station, however.

"Choices," she said flatly, looking back and forth between the pair of them.

"Just because we can't see them right now doesn't mean they don't exist," Sarah Jane said quietly. She shook her head, clearing her thoughts. Paranoia was not going to be helpful. Wariness, yes. But not paranoia.

She nodded at GLaDOS's assertion. She was glad the other woman - or whatever she was - was able to walk. She wasn't entirely sure she trusted stepping so close to the woman. She was glad when they came upon the road. Walking through the snow and muck was never pleasant, and Sarah had proper shoes for it. She glanced toward the carnival, then toward the gas station.

"Choices indeed," she muttered. Neither place looked particularly inviting. She frowned. "I don't hear any car noises," she remarked. "We must be on a very infrequently traveled road." She looked between the two possible destinations again. "We could each take a building and see what's what," she suggested. Not that Sarah Jane necessarily wanted to strike out on her own in such an inhospitable place, but she wasn't sure how much safer she was with GLaDOS. And, it would be more difficult to go unnoticed if there were two of them.

"It is difficult to hide surveillance equipment effectively," GLaDOS observed. She had long since given up trying to hide her cameras. She found that often they acted as link between she and her subjects. Some seemed to enjoy staring in to them.

"This does not seem to be a frequented road," the concurred, looking back and forth between the two options. "I think that separating would garner us more intelligence in a more expedient manner."

The woman stood, uncertain what to say. She never had to say goodbye to someone before - usually she was with them until the bitter end. The bitter flaming end. The bitter neurotoxin filled end. The end.

"You should be careful, I have not yet completed my risk assessment of the area and cannot provide you with any situation based advise," her tone sounded almost disappointed, if GLaDOS in fact knew what that meant. "Good luck," the orange clad woman said finitely, turning to the right and starting to head off toward the gas station.

Sarah only nodded at the remark about hiding surveillance equipment. She was, if she admitted it to herself, glad that GLaDOS seemed to think splitting up would be a good idea. She somehow felt less nervous about tackling the place on her own.

"I appreciate the thought," Sarah said, smiling at the other woman when she expressed concern. "You as well, yeah? Don't want the only person I know here getting into too much trouble."

As GLaDOS turned toward the gas station, Sarah called after her. "And you!" She gave the woman a parting wave before turning toward the amusement park. Squaring her shoulders, she marched toward the dilapidated looking thing, wondering what sorts of information she was likely to find in such a place. At the very least, it would give her a place with cover where she could sit and look at this odd journal more carefully. With all the varied writings, there had to be something of use inside its pages.
