Cheryl was almost afraid to open her eyes. Too used to the process of unexpectedly losing and then regaining consciousness, she felt that she knew what would greet her as soon as she sat up and she had to admit that she wasn't entirely looking forward to the prospect of pulsating meaty walls and grotesque creatures at every turn -- but that wasn't right. She shouldn't have to face that sort of thing again, not when all that should have been behind her. She was miles and miles away from that town and, as far as she could remember, Portland didn't have a major problem with creeps and spooks -- not the supernatural kind, anyway.

Casting her thoughts back, Cheryl could remember standing just outside the bank. She had intended to wait for it to open so that she could withdraw the majority of her funds and then she meant to buy a ticket on the first bus out of town. There was a letter she wanted to send, but --

Right. All of that was perfectly true and fine, but it didn't quite explain why she was lying on what felt like wet grass.

'Stalling isn't going to help anything,' Cheryl silently reminded herself, but it still took her a long moment to pull herself to a sitting position. After mentally steeling herself, she finally allowed her eyes to open and her first impression was of trees -- an endless maze of trees and underbrush all around her with no hint of anything beyond. Though this sight was far tamer than what she might have been expecting, it was still not something native to the middle of downtown which only begged the question of how in the hell she managed to get herself here.

"Get myself here?" Cheryl snorted quietly as she pulled herself to her feet. Absently, she brushed at the slight damp of her clothes, but the majority of her attention was still given to the fact that she was deserted in an unexpected forest -- only not entirely deserted as she soon managed to stumble across two bodies lying nearby.

It was perhaps telling that her first thought was that the prone figures absolutely must be corpses and, if she didn't want to end up just like them, then she'd better get to running. The impulse to flee was so strong that Cheryl did take a few jogging steps in the opposite direction, but she soon pulled herself short -- where exactly did she think she was going and what did she think she'd find? By all appearances, she was in the middle of a thick forest and running blindly would just get her even more lost than she currently was. Besides, she realized after a long moment of staring that both the male corpse and the female appeared to be breathing steadily -- which meant that they were probably alive and most likely in the same boat as she was.

"Way to overreact," she muttered to herself. Still, even knowing that the two weren't corpses didn't entirely kill the impulse to walk away. There was no way of knowing, after all, what sort of people they were and it could just be simpler if she tried to find her own way. It could be for the best...

"You're crazy. There's no way you're going to just leave them there." Hearing the words aloud did allow Cheryl to realize how bad it would be of her to just leave the two, kids no older than herself by appearances, to fend for themselves and she resigned herself to staying.

As if just noticing the fine mist of rain, Cheryl pulled the hood of her deep orange hoodie up against the weather and stuffed one of her hands deep into the pockets of this same as she meandered her way back to the two. Crouching down between them, she toyed with the idea of just letting the two come around on their own, but she wasn't sure that she'd have the patience for that. In the end, she did decide to try to wake them with a call of "Hey, you two going to sleep all day?"

It was a basic piece of logic which had essentially escaped her up until this moment - that someone had doubtlessly carried the three of them to this particular part of the woods while they were all unconscious. The realization struck Cheryl cold and, holding her breath, she quickly rummaged through all the pockets of her jacket and of her faded jeans only to find that the small switchblade which she had always carried with her was apparently missing - either dropped somewhere along the way or taken.

Cheryl muttered a curse under her breath at this realization but her attention quickly returned to her two other companions as soon as the word 'witch' entered the conversation. A small gasp left her and she felt her eyes widen a little as she glanced back and forth between the two. Half-remembered times when cruel schoolchildren had thrown that particular epithet around flooded her mind, but she refused to look too closely at any of them.

"I...think all of us here are human," she agreed weakly. "No point in throwing names around, anyway, if we're going to need each other to get out of this place."

Cheryl took another quick inventory of the contents of the kit which she had opened and, after a moment of deliberation, she pocketed the wet matches and the tic tacs. The bottle of water she considered for a long moment before shoving it back inside the kit - no way of knowing if it was safe and she wasn't about to expose herself to whatever might be in it. Satisfied with her meager supplies, she pulled herself to her feet and glanced in the direction which the dark haired girl had pointed.

"Good enough for me," she nodded, then turned a curious glance to the other girl. "I don't think we asked your name, though?"

The unknown girl was definitely creeping Watanuki out. He couldn't figure out why she had laughed when she had said she was human. He was so used to being around spirits that he wouldn't have blinked even she'd said she was a ghost or a demon. And someone had carried the three of them to this forest. His thoughts kept coming back to that. He was sure there was some reason why they had been picked, unless of course this was an elaborate prank.
So why them? He had the eye, of course. He knew only too well how spirits were attracted to it. And the girl, despite claiming not to be a witch, probably possessed some arcane power.

Watanuki looked definitely surprised, and anguished, when the girl felt insulted by her question. Miss Mason had the same reaction. He hadn't meant in any way to imply that witches were bad - though maybe he'd felt a bitter when thinking of the one witch he knew better. At any rate, he apologized and dropped the subject.
This didn't mean he'd accepted that the other two girls were normal - he knew fully well that despite looking human he couldn't really be classified as "normal". And the girl, with her muttering and her way of talking as if she knew more than what she chose to reveal, was definitely on the odd side as well.
However, he saw no reason to upset her any further. He had to agree with miss Mason, it was hard enough on them already without arguing over trivial things.

"I think we'd better get going," Watanuki said, with a glance at the sky. "We don't have any food or shelter here, and the weather looks bad..."
He walked a few steps in the direction the girl had pointed. "This way? You wouldn't know if there's a town, or something like that?" he asked, a shade of hope in his voice.

River glanced up when Cheryl had defended her. She simply smiled at the girl and nodded at Watanuki's apology; deciding to not continue on the subject. She didn't want to test as to whether or not they were going to turn on her and tie her to a stake like before.

Looking at the stuff in her arms she thought better of it and decided to put her tic tacs and matches in her boots and just hang onto the water, journal and pen, as well as the socks.

River nodded at Cheryl when she commented on the direction River had pointed out. She was going to lead the way when she asked her name. "My name is River Tam. Although just River is fine." she smiled and turned to Watanuki who took a few steps in the direction. "Yes. That way. There is something." she began to lead the way through the trees. She read that there was a building though unsure as to what the specifics was.

The walk was long and River was unsure as to what more to say to the two with her. She chose to not say anything at all and just lead them in the direction she had vaguely saw.

After a while the trees started to become thinner and they came upon a rather large building. They seemed to be at the back of it. River stopped walking and stared at the building. Slowly a frustrated look came across her face. She couldn't tell whether or not there was someone inside. It was too quiet. Suddenly she grabed her waterbottle and threw it at the nearest window. It hit the glass with a loud thud. Knowing that the two with her would react she needed them to be quite so she could see if there was danger or not. Putting her free arm out to silence them she listened intently inside the building to read for thoughts and movement. Nothing.

River walked up to the building and picked up her water. As she walked around the building she took a drink, not realizing how thirsty she was. After walking around another side she came upon the door. Putting the cap on her bottle she looked to the other two and shrugged. They had come this far, may as well see what it was. She held onto her things close to her chest and kicked at the door as hard as she could. With a bang the door opened to what looked like a library that had been long since abandoned.

Cheryl settled into a comfortable silence as she followed the chosen path through the woods. It did occur to her that it might be more comfortable - and make it easier for the three of them to adapt to each other - if they attempted to make small talk with each other, but she couldn't imagine where to begin given the current situation. Somehow, banter wouldn't come to her mind and she didn't really want to speak her personal thoughts and theories on what had happened - so, instead, she merely plucked a rather thick fallen branch from the underbrush and, as she walked along, she began to strip the smaller limbs from the main branch. She did realize that a heavy log might not be the best of tools, but it might come in handy somewhere along the line.

Her stripping project was very nearly done by the time Cheryl again glanced to her surroundings and she was vaguely surprised to notice that the forest had thinned enough to reveal hints of a building ahead. She fought with her heartbeat for a long moment - telling herself that it would just be a normal building, a building that might even hold help in some form - but she couldn't quite keep a nervous energy from rising.

Even with her anxiety, Cheryl kept herself from any vocal response to what appeared to be an attempt to draw attention to themselves by River. Instead, she raised the thick wooden log in her hands and held onto it much as one would any blunt instrument - two hands low and tight. Cheryl had already mentally prepared herself to fight if it should come down to that - and she supposed that she'd try her best to help River and Watanuki out, too, even if they both seemed to be fairly capable in their own ways.

Still, there was a measure of relief when no response came and Cheryl found herself exhaling a breath which she hadn't quite been aware that she had been holding; apparently, some of her superstitious paranoia had traveled back with her from the Otherworld, but she wouldn't begrudge the emotion - not when it could be enough to save her life. She offered a slight nod in response to River's shrug and Cheryl carefully followed the other girl inside - only to discover what appeared to be a very rundown library.

She blinked slightly as she cast her eyes to their surroundings, but nothing jumped out at her as an important sign of anyone setting foot within the building within the last twenty years. Everything seemed in disrepair, dust and grit laid heavily upon the floor, bare spots dripped a fine mist of water down on them - no, it definitely wasn't the sort of place Cheryl'd expect to find the hoped-for help but, then again, she hadn't really thought there'd be much help to be found.

"Well, if anyone was here, they would've tried to grab us by now," Cheryl winced at the sound of her voice and how it seemed so loud in the long abandoned room - even when she spoke in a whisper. Still, it might have been for the best since it did keep her from vocalizing the thought that this could be an elaborate plot - to do what, she couldn't begin to imagine but she also couldn't begin to imagine why anyone would kidnap people so randomly - unless it wasn't as random as it seemed.

"I guess that makes this sanctuary, for now," she continued. She had allowed her voice to trail down to a whisper as she took a few steps further inside, but she showed no real eagerness to explore too deeply - not yet, anyway. "There might even be supplies deeper inside. Even if not, at least there's some sort of roof overhead."

Watanuki couldn't decide whether the box and its contents were worth carrying around. But in the end, since they'd been left for them to find, he decided to hang on to it. He regretted his decision immediately, since it meant he had to walk through this strange forest carrying it in his arms. His shoulders started to ache almost immediately, but he'd have felt even more stupid to drop it after carrying it for half of the way, so he just went on without saying anything.

The mood was getting very gloom, and no surprise since they were very much lost in an unknown place, and Watanuki wished he could say something to relieve the tension.
But miss Tam - River, he corrected himself, though it was weird to call someone he'd just met by her first name - River unsettled him, and he wouldn't know what to tell her.
He glanced at the other girl, but she seemed to be busy stripping off a large branch and in no mood to talk.
If he hadn't been carrying the bloody box, he could have made a makeshift club too. It probably wouldn't have been much help against whatever unknown terrors the forest held, but it would at least have been something. Right now he felt even more powerless than usual.

The small relief he felt when they came across a large building evaporated completely when River threw her bottle of water against a window.
"What are you doing?" he exclaimed, unable to contain himself despite her motioning him to stay put. "They could have heard us!"
He wasn't quite certain who "they" were, but he would have preferred to have a quiet look around without attracting the attention of whoever could be around.
He relaxed visibly when nothing happened. The building seemed to be deserted. He followed the others inside, looking behind his shoulders one last time to check that nobody was around.

With some disappointment, Watanuki realized that the building was a run-down library. The pale sunlight coming in from the dusty windows illuminated a dismal scene. Piles of books, their pages yellow and their covers battered, lay on the shelves and tables scattered in the huge room. There were cobwebs at every corner, and the place smelled of mould and decay.

Watanuki made a face. "We could explore this place and see if there's anything useful," he said in response to miss Mason's words. "But I think we should move on if we want to find something to eat."
He took a few steps towards the nearest pile of books, carefully picking one up. The pages were old and frayed, and the red cover was so discoloured that he couldn't make out the title on the cover.
He opened some pages at random, but it was written in a language he couldn't read.
"I wonder if there's a map among all these books?" he wondered aloud, without much hope.

River leaned by the door and looked up to the sky. It certainly did look a bit gloomy. Cheryl was right, if anything this old library could be a form of shelter. River turned back to the girl and noded at her. She shifted her things back to her left arm and began going through the different books. Many were faded and some were falling apart. "I wonder how long this place has been abandond..." River contemplated out loud as she began wandering around further into the building.

River glanced back where Watanuki was standing when he made his comment about finding something to eat. She hadn't thought about food yet...she was only thinking about a way out of the woods. Now that they had escaped she knew he was right and they had to find something to eat. "Perhaps we should find something to eat after going through this place...but we probably should stick together in case anything happens." she would have hated if anything happened to the two with her. Although she did not know them, they had been nice and patient with her so far; and she would blame herself if anything happened to them.

"I'm not so sure if there will be a map of where we are at...but maybe a general map of the planet?" she said as she began to approach the tree in the middle of the building that seemed to have taken over.

"Unless whoever threw us out here removed all the maps and reference books." Cheryl knew that she was likely being just a touch too cynical about the situation, but she had already come to the conclusion that what- or whoever had brought them to this particular forest had no intention to make things entirely easy for any of them. Her newly shaped paranoia was already forming all of this into a shadowy conspiracy and, though she was trying not to invest too much into the idea that this was some elaborate scheme, she couldn't quite shake the feeling.

Even so, she began to trace the numbers on the shelves. Cheryl couldn't know if the reference system was the same as those used within just about any given school or public library, but she intended to find out.

"Finding food does seem like a good idea. Maybe some camping gear, too, though that's probably a real long shot." Cheryl crouched then sat on the floor and began to pull a few large volumes from the lower shelves. "I dunno how we'd rig it since it's pretty wet and moldy in here, but maybe we could light a fire, if we can't find any other way to keep warm. 'course, with all the wood and the books, that might be pretty dangerous."

Then again, if it came down to freezing to death or burning the place down -- well, maybe they could find a room where it'd be easier to keep a controlled burn. Or even a lower room or basement with a concrete floor.

"A map of the planet?" Watanuki echoed, his voice shaking a bit.
"I thought we'd agreed that we were still somewhere on Earth?"
Of course, it was entirely possible that these two girls didn't even come from the same planet as him. But he didn't want to think about that possibility.
Because in that case he'd have to think about his friends, whom he had no way to get in touch with now.
"Himawari-chan," he sighed, putting down the mouldy book he'd been leafing through. "Will I ever see your smile again?"

He started walking around the aisles, looking around. "This place looks as if it's been abandoned for centuries!" he replied to River. "Hey, there's a tree blocking the passage here..."
His voice trailed off as he watched the pale trunk, whose branches were pointing upwards in a determined if futile effort to catch the dusty light coming in from a gap in the roof.
The more he explored, the more the library seemed to be dismal and, well, useless.
"Most of these books seem to be in English," he ventured after a while. "Can you two read them?"
Somehow, despite being in high school he had almost no knowledge of English.

Watanuki nodded when River suggested that they stick together. "It would be strange if this was just a library in the middle of a forest, right?" he said with a small chuckle. It wasn't really funny, though, considering the other strange things that had already happened to them, so the smile died on his lips.
"There's probably other buildings around here," he continued lamely. "We could look for a place where it's safer to light a fire."
He didn't suggest using the books to light a fire, because the idea somehow disquietened him.

River looked over at Watanuki with a confused look on her face. "Earth? People haven't lived on earth for a very long time. No more room. We expanded." she tilted her head a little at him. No one in the universe lived on Earth for very long anymore. No one alive remembers what it was like to be born on Earth. It was confusing to her...this idea of staying forever on one planet.

She walked over to where he stood by the tree and tried to see if there was a way inside the passage. For a girl who could punch through thick metal she did not think she could break through the thick tree trunk past into whatever was blocking it. Aparantly who ever helped this tree to start growing didn't want anyone to venture into certain places. Cheyrl's voices pulled River from her thoughts. "You never know." she shrugged, "Perhaps there is an abandoned store somewhere that could have more of the supplies we need.

River turned her attention at the books and again threw Watanuki a confused look. Weren't they speaking english? Everyone she knew spoke english and chinese fluently. She did not know much about any other languages than those. "Of course I know english." Looking up and examing much of the building River had to agree with him. It would be very stupid of them to light a fire in such a hazardus place. "Perhaps you are right. I'd rather try to find another building than die in a fire." she nodded to him.

"The people did what? Cheryl asked, glancing up sharply from the book which she had opened in her lap. She shook her head slowly and offered a faint sounding laugh. "That can't be right - I know I was out of it for a good while, but Portland seemed perfectly normal. And very much on Earth. I haven't even heard of anyone but astronauts --"

Cheryl allowed her words to trail away and she closed her eyes, cursing softly. The thought that River might have just been joking flickered across her mind, but she quickly discounted it; it was something said far too casually to be a lie or a joke - and there was no obvious reason for River to want them to believe such a strange story, if it wasn't true.

So, now there was no way of knowing if Cheryl was even on her native planet, but at least there was good evidence that Watanuki came from the same Earth as she. "We've been speaking English all along, haven't we? I don't even know any other languages..." Well, there were the two years of French she'd taken in school, but that wasn't really enough to converse very easily or naturally.

Wanting time to chew on her thoughts, Cheryl turned her attention back to the book she had found, but she was brought to a cold stop at the almost casual mention of dying in a fire. The thought lying much too close with her own past experience with fires, she fought against a rising panic and it was only through an effort of will that she kept the reaction to a mere shaking of her hands.

"I--maybe we should start looking for supplies and a better shelter?" She suggested, glancing from River to Watanuki. "It doesn't look like we're going to find anything useful here and we should use the daylight while we have it since we don't know how long we'll have to walk."

Watanuki's face went, if possible, even paler than usual when he heard Raven's words. "Is that a joke?" he asked, but he didn't expect it to be so.
"I'm not sure we come from the same planet," he told the other two after a pause in which he tried to collect his thoughts. "We... probably... come from different dimensions entirely. Yuuko once told me that there are different dimensions, and that it's possible to travel through them. However it's very difficult and only a few people have that power. There's even less people with the power to send others through the dimensions..." There was another pause while he tried to remember Yuuko's exact words. "If we come from different dimensions... and if someone has somehow sent us here... then that person has an incredible magical power. I think."
He was unsure of his words himself, since he was no mage, but it was the only reasoning that would make sense. But it was a discomforting thought, feeling at the mercy of some powerful stranger.

When the subject switched to languages, his face fell even more. "I don't know English," he said glumly. "I only speak Japanese. To me, even now, we're all speaking Japanese."
More magic? After all, if they'd been brought across dimensions, making them understand each other was probably an easy thing to do. He wished he'd been able to read the books as well.

Watanuki nodded at miss Mason's suggestion. It was probably better to concentrate on finding food and other necessities than to dwell on their unfavorable situation.
He turned towards the door, instinctively turning into housewife mode. "What we need most is food, and water," he reflected as he walked. "One bottle of water won't last long, even if we ration it. It would be best if we could find warmer clothes, or even blankets, since we don't know how cold it might get here. If we don't find any place better than this, we could spend the night here. I could clean up this section," he added, glancing at some bookshelves over which the roof seemed to be still in one piece.

River glanced back and forth from Watanuki and Cheryl and back. She wondered if they were taken away somehow and had their memories wiped. "The people expanded. Earth was too small. Though there are still some who live there..."she was unsure of how to explain it to them. "I was born on Osiris...although no one stays on one planet for a long time." she said shaking her head a bit. She looked back over at Cheryl. "What year was it when you were taken? It was 2516 when I left."

Watanuki's comment on japanese pulled her attention back to him. Uncounciously she tilted her head as she tried to understand whether or not he was joking. "Japanese?" she let out an awkward laguh, "No one speaks many of the old languages anymore. Everyone is fluent in Chinese and English but it's rare to find someone who speaks any other language than that."

She glanced down at her water at the idea of rationing. He was right it didn't matter what they did they were bound to run out of supplies fast. At Cheryl's comment, River walked back over to the door and looked out into the open. It was obvious that there were other buildings around, she didn't need her...uniqueness...to show her that. But just like before she still couldn't tell what these buildings were. The more she looked out the more she could pick up on the other people coming closer together. They were all faint readings but she could tell that they were not going to hurt them anytime soon. River turned back and nodded to Cheryl as if to tell her it was going to be ok for them to go out and look for the things they needed.

"I...heard of something like that, being able to pass through dimensions," Cheryl spoke slowly and carefully, not entirely sure how much of this she wanted to speak aloud. "I can only think of a few who could really manage it, though, and it was usually pretty obvious when it happened."

Then again, she had been unconscious during many of the times she'd slipped between worlds - and she had awakened to this new place from unconsciousness, hadn't she? And this world so far did seem to be one of heavy mists with buildings in disrepair and scattered inhabitants - all of which she had seen a time or two before.

Cheryl allowed her eyes to drift closed and, lifting her hands, she rubbed at her temples with careful fingertips. "I'm from Portland in the summer of 2003 - so I guess it's pretty obvious when I say that I haven't heard of Osiris or people leaving the Earth to live somewhere else."

Different eras and different planets? She didn't know those could be drawn into the world-in-between, but she supposed that it probably hadn't been tried. If there was a purpose behind the will, though...

Opening her eyes, Cheryl glanced to Watanuki. "What year are you from? I mean, not to be stereotypical, but I'd guess somewhere in Japan of somewhere around my time, but I'm curious."

The idea of moving instead of just sitting and thinking suddenly struck Cheryl as being wonderful and so she quickly pulled herself to her feet. She nodded to Watanuki's list of supplies, but she silently added a weapon or two to it - just in case things slipped further.

"In case we don't find anything better, we should make sure we can find our way back here," she glanced curiously to River for a moment, wondering if the girl would be able to use her uncanny sense to guide them, but she soon decided that it wouldn't hurt to have something practical as a backup. With a wan grin, she fished the tic tacs from her pocket and gave the container a shake. "It's no breadcrumb trail, but it couldn't hurt..."

Watanuki nodded at Cheryl. "Yes, I'm from around that period too. From Tokyo, Japan," he said. "So... River comes from the future. Or a future, at any rate. It's all so complicated!" he exclaimed, taking his head into his hands.
He often felt unlucky, and it wasn't the first time that something weird had happened to him, but usually he'd be surrounded by people he could rely on. Even seeing Domeki's stupid face would have improved matters.

He was starting to feel hungry, too, and his throat felt parched. He hadn't realized how much time they'd spent inside the library, but it must have been longer than he'd thought. It was probably afternoon already.
He took the bottle of water and, after peering at it suspiciously, took a small swig. The water tasted normal, but he still wasn't trusting anything he found in this place.

Personally, Watanuki thought that Cheryl's idea would be useless. The tic tacs were small and easy to miss, and he wouldn't have been surprised if the buildings happened to move overnight. But he just shrugged and nodded at the girl. It wasn't as if they had any other use for the candies.
"What's the time?" he asked. He didn't have a watch and was bad at guessing what time it was judging by the sky. When he stepped outside the library he noticed that the sun was still high on the horizon, but he couldn't have said how many hours of daylight they had left. The only thing he knew was that they'd better get a move on if they wanted to eat something for dinner.

"Maybe we'd better split up," he suggested, somehow reluctantly. They had no idea of where to find food, or if there was any food at all in that place. "If I search in a place and you two search in another, we'll cover a larger area," he said. "We can meet again here later and share whatever we've found. If we find anything at all," he added glumly.

Listening to their time periods River suddenly felt like the odd one out. These people were so far in the past it was annoying to her. They wouldn't know anything about The Alliance or Osiris, Ariel, or even slang like 'shiny'. Although the idea of an alternate universe sounded possible too. River was realizing quickly she would need to disregard all that she had been taught. All that she knew and relied on. It was going to be difficult for her to wrap her brain around. River looked away from a little sad. She was more alone than she realized.

When Cheryl mentioned the tic tacs as a sort of bread crumb trail River looked at her like she had three heads. It would have been almost impossible for them to findi the tiny treats on the ground let alone have enough to follow back to the library. Besides, she had never had anything like them before and she would rather eat hers than dispose to the ground.

Looking over at Watanuki she realized he was probably right. It would probably be better for them to split up and cover more ground than to remain close to each other. She looked back out the door and saw that the others were coming closer and closer. "It won't be long now." she said to the other two and started to walk a little bit out of the library. She stopped and turned back to them and smiled. "Splitting up will be ok. More ground. More findings. More people. We'll find each other again." she said it all with so much certainty.

The firm certainty in the other girl's tone did help to soothe some of Cheryl's doubts but her previous experiences in fog shrouded towns made it harder for her to believe that they would all be able to meet up again any time soon - at least not in the same mental or physical shape as present.

Still, she shook these thoughts away with a slight shake of her head and she moved to stand near River by the open door. Beyond, there really wasn't much to give an impression of what might be found but at least Cheryl could find no immediate signs of impending danger.

"I guess that's settled then," Cheryl spoke more easily and more brusquely than she felt as she stepped back outside. "See you guys around."

The 'I hope' part of that statement remained unsaid, but Cheryl couldn't help but add an admonishment for them to be careful.

Watanuki nodded at the other girls. He didn't want to be left on his own, but didn't want to chicken out in front of them either. He managed a small smile.
"I'll do my best to explore this place," he said, heaving his box on a shoulder and stepping out of the door.
It was still daylight, but it wouldn't last for long. "Good luck to both of you," Watanuki said. "I hope I'll see you around soon, I'll try to get back here." Whatever happens, he added mentally, but he didn't say it.
His mood definitely sank when he turned a corner and his two companions disappeared from his sight.
