Who: Chris Halliwell and anyone in the gym, or vicinity of.
What: Waking up to something not quite right.
Where: The gym.
When: Day 21 - Early morning, 6:34am.
Rating: PG-13?
Status: Complete.

He wasn't sure what made him wake up. Granted, he'd always been a bit of a light sleeper, and this place did have him on edge. Maybe it was the presence of so many innocents near him and those annoying instincts of his were kicking in. He decided to stay in the gym again that night, partly because there was at least something close to beds there as opposed to the other buildings.

One hand pushed his hair out of his eyes as Chris sat up, blinking away sleep as he looked around. It was still fairly dark, which he thought was kind of strange, but then, the weather in this place didn't seem to follow any rules of logic. Still, he glanced at the watch that was still annoyingly on his wrist to check the time to see if the sun should be up yet. His stomach rumbled but he ignored it as he stretched, looking around to see if there was anything new, if there was someone around that had caused him to wake. Then his eyes caught on something shiny on one of the nearby clinic tables. No, it couldn't be. He rubbed at his eyes and stood up to get a better look from where he was.

...was that a machete?

"Um, guys?" The whitelighter was instantly looking around for danger and he stepped over to the nearest cot to shake the shoulder of the person occupying it, eyes going back to the weapon. Hadn't he heard someone say they had nothing to defend themselves with? "Guys, I think we need to get up. I've got a bad feeling..."

"There also weren't all sort of kids running around until just the other day," he muttered, pushing himself to sit upright until he thought better of it and clutched at that pillow.

"I'd rather they give out some food. Maybe a steak and some potatoes.. Or a big bowl of chili." His stomach turned a little at the thought. "Or some beans." This time his stomach rolled and growled.

He forced himself out of bed over to where the other man was inspecting something or other. "Oh." He said, coming up beside him. Well, look, a machete, how barbaric. "Oh, they're probably just pulling our legs."

"I was one of those kids, thanks." Chris ignored the talk of food, not wanting to think about the fact he had nothing but water the day before nor how they weren't likely to get anything they actually wanted in this place. The others could hold onto such pipe dreams if it was what got them through the day. He would rather see the place for what it was, no matter how bad. At least then he knew what he was dealing with.

He picked up the machete to get a feel for it, lightly smacking the handle against his palm as he turned his head to look at the other man. "Really? You want to take that chance? 'Cause I don't." Maybe it was because he was so used to dealing with bad things happening, but Chris was willing to bet this was no joke. There was a reason something like this had popped up.

"So was my friend," he said back sharply. Sorry, Chris, you weren't going to be getting a pity party out of this guy. He wasn't good for them to start with and this place had made him even less apt to be showering anyone with his limited supply of out and out empathy; especially when they were as harsh as the other man.

"It's a machete. On a table." Just a reminder, Chris.

McCoy rubbed his eyes. "I feel like I've been sleeping forever..." He looked at his wrist. "Shouldn't the sun be up by now?"

Chris rolled his eyes, again, and set the machete aside. Just in case he felt compelled to make big gestures or something. It wouldn't be very good if he accidentally hurt someone when his healing powers had been touch and go before he showed up in this place; goddess only knew if he could even use them here. "Yeah, and there were an assortment of snacks that kids would eat two days ago. So what are the odds that a machete shows up for no reason at all, hmm?" He raised his brows, waiting for whatever counter would come.

After a moment he glanced up at the few small painted windows high up near the ceiling. He never did understand why humans felt the need to put such things in gymnasiums. "I was thinking that too. Worries me that it isn't." Looking back at McCoy, he sighed. "Look, I'd love to believe that nothing horrible is going to happen today, but I'm not an optimist, and the signs do not look good to me. I think we're safer preparing for the worst, and I will be the first one to be happy if I'm proven wrong."

"Well, they're not always that benevolent. Besides, doesn't quite seem their style to give us weapons we could possibly use against them." He quirked a brow at the rather large knife, he didn't like the idea of having to treat wounds caused by it, that was for sure.

"Did I give you the idea that I am?" The physician's brow cocked further. "No, I'm a doctor from the school of realism. We have a knife on our hands, not attacking mobs or monsters. It's just a knife. A knife that could do more harm to you or me if somebody in a panic picked it up and used it." That's right, Chris, he was more worried about you and him getting poked by one of your fellow captives than the possibility of attack from outside. Sorry, that's just the way his mind worked: people did stupid things when they were scared.

Normally getting wounded wasn't something that would bother him, but seeing as Leo was conspicuously absent from this screwed up place, Chris knew he would have to be careful. Since he was only half whitelighter he could be injured just as easily as any other mortal, and it wasn't something he liked being reminded of. "It's a big ass knife and it's here for a reason." Because that was usually how it worked where he was from. Fate and destiny and all that crap.

He thought about letting it go for the moment and glanced at his watch again, frowning. "The sun really should be up by now." Chris sighed as he walked around McCoy and over toward the gym door so he could have a look outside. Maybe it was just really overcast and that was why it seemed so dark. Maybe. As he walked he noticed a few baseball bats leaned up against one of the walls and he knew those hadn't been there before because he and Rose had spent a good bit of the previous afternoon sitting over there talking. "Okay, what's your theory for a machete AND wooden bats? They want us to go hack into some trees? Start a game of baseball?"

He talked over his shoulder, not really trying to keep it down in case any of the others were still fairly asleep. As far as he was concerned everyone needed to be up after all. Once at the door Chris opened it without hesitation, hoping the birds were at least gone and if they weren't confident he could orb out of the way, and with a hand on the door frame he leaned out to take a look around.
