Day 19, Morning
Who: Elliot Reid and Andy Gallagher
What: Wakey, Wakey
Where: The Van near the Church
When: Day 19, Morning
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Elliot wasn't sure what woke her, but it was with a sigh of relief that she opened her eyes and spotted Andy's velvet tiger print on the inside of the van. At least she hadn't been pulled for the day's torture. Not that it was a huge relief, considering that she knew there would be others who were less lucky. She rolled over and looked at Andy's form buried under the blankets. She could see a small bit of hhair poking up from the top of his blankets. At least he hadn't been pulled either.

She stretched in the small space of the van and looked around for her journal. There was no use putting off looking in it to see what horrors had already happened or awaited them outside the safety of the van. She spotted it piled on top of some books behind the driver's side. She crawled over, trying to reach for it over Andy's sleeping form without waking him. All she managed to do was get two fingers on it before sending the books toppling. Andy's form stirred under the blankets and Elliot scrunched up her nose.

"Sorry, sorry," she said, reaching over him to pick up one or two of the other books. "I was just trying to get to my…" Elliot's throat stopped working as warm brown eyes looked up at her. She screamed and threw herself back against the other side of the van. Tiny hands emerged from underneath the blanket and she had to force herself not to hyperventilate. Tiny hands creeped her out. Tiny hands really creeped her out. What was more disturbing at the moment though, was that the kid in front of her was wearing an exact miniature version of Andy's clothes. What the frick?

"Who are you?" She asked, her voice so high and squeaky that it sounded almost hoarse. She refused to entertain for even a second that this could be the same Andy Gallagher, only much younger. Because that was absurd. Impossible. Unthinkable.

Andy was having a wonderful dream. Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Shredder finally got rid of that dumb girl April and he'd been chosen to take her place as an impromptu part of the team. Just as he was about to take a great big bite of ooey-gooey delicious cheese pizza Michelangelo had given to him, he was awakened by the thudding sound of something falling over beside him. Squeezing his eyes shut and trying to get back into the dream, Andy rolled over.

He heard a female voice and he opened his eyes again, rolling onto his back. Andy's mother was dead and dad hadn't had a girlfriend...maybe he was staying the night at Stacy's - his babysitter - because dad had to work late again and he'd simply forgotten. But, when he pulled the covers down to his chin and looked up at her, she didn't look like Stacy at all and he blinked his wide brown eyes sleepily up at her. Where there should have been fiery red curls, there was straight blonde locks and where there should have been green eyes and a nose covered in freckles, there were blue eyes and a complete and total absense of said freckles. Andy gasped and stared as she screamed and threw herself away from him and then he sat up quickly, his hands coming out from underneath the covers and his small fingers clutching the blanket close to his chin.

She asked who he was and Andy's eyes grew nearly to the size of saucers as he shook his head. "STRANGER DANGER!!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, too scared to move and just then realizing that he wasn't in the guest bed at Stacy's house, nor was he nestled in his own bed. There were no Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on his pillow case or blanket. Andy had no idea where he was.

As the realization hit, his eyes softened and his little chin started to wobble. Big, fat tears welled up in his eyes before rolling down his cheeks. "My name is Andrew," he said in a watery voice. "I'm lost...can you help me?" She didn't seem to be a threat, he realized, because she was acting as afraid of him as he was of her. But, in any case, maybe she knew where he was and could take him back home.

Elliot realized a moment too late that screaming probably wasn't the best reaction to a child, but still what was he doing in a locked van with her? And why was he wearing Andy's clothes, or clothes like them? Sure he was cute, if you didn't look at the hands clutching the blanket up to his chin, but that still didn't explain what the hell he was doing there.

Elliot gasped as he screamed, noting that he'd actually managed to get higher than her on the scale. If she wasn't freaking out about waking up next to a baby she would've been slightly impressed. Then the kid started to cry and Elliot's face fell. Oh God. Don't start crying. She would've actually preferred the screaming to that.

"Andrew?" She repeated, feeling her chest tighten. She met his eyes and tried to search them for any sign of the person she knew. "Andrew Gallagher?" Elliot closed her mouth and made a whimpering sound. This couldn't be happening. "Andy," she said, trying to force a friendly smile even though she was freaking out. "How old are you?"

For a moment, Andy just looked back at the woman, blinking. How did she know his name? Maybe she was a new babysitter. Probably, he decided as he rubbed his eyes to dry his tears and then swiped his arm under his nose as he sniffled sloppily. "No, it's Andrew," he insisted when she called him Andy. He didn't like that name; it was a name for babies, not big boys.

"Andrew Justin Gallagher," he agreed giving her a proud smile and nodding, the blanket finally falling away to reveal fully the shirt his older self had been wearing the night before when he'd fallen asleep. "What's your name?" he inquired.

Andy got to his feet and looked curiously around his surroundings. "Cool!" he exclaimed, drawing the word out when his eyes met the tiger painted on the interior. "Did you do that?!" he asked excitedly, looking back at her as he reached up and scratched the back of his head as he sniffled again and this time wiped his nose with the front of his shirt.

It wasn't unlike him to change gears rather quickly and that morning was no exception to the rule. "I'm hungry. C'n I have some Count Chocula? Or...Eggos?! With Cool Whip and a strawberry!" he exclaimed. Andy was used to babysitters coming and going; since he'd decided that the blonde woman must be his new one, he had no problem taking a few steps toward her and taking her hand, tugging on her arm. "I'm hungry!"

"Right, sorry, Andrew," Elliot said, fighting to stay calm. At least he'd stopped crying. God, she felt bad about that, but how was she supposed to react? She'd fallen asleep with grown-up Andy and now there was a sniffling midget in his place. God, don't think about midgets, that was never a good train of thought.

"You're middle name is Justin?" Elliot asked, storing the information away for future reference. She gave him a small smile. "Me? I'm Elliot. Elliot Reed." Seeing as how she couldn't exactly just leave him behind in the van, Elliot relaxed back against the wall, watching him take in his surroundings.

Elliot shook her head. "No, I didn't. But you're right, it's cool." She sucked in a deep breath as he wiped his nose on his shirt. That wasn't sanitary, but it wasn't like they had anything lying around he could use.

When he exclaimed he was hungry Elliot found herself wondering where she was supposed to find food for a kid. "Sorry, there's no Count Chocula or Eggos here. I wish there were." It wasn't a lie. "Okay, okay," she said, suddenly feeling rushed by miniature Andy. "What about..."

She started looking through the small amount of food she'd brought back for their breakfast. She held up a candy bar. "You like chocolate, right?"

When Elliot introduced herself, Andy's little brow furrowed as he looked back at her. "Elliot's a boy's name," he insisted, crossing his arms over his chest and sniffing hard before wiggling his nose in leiu of scratching the itch there. "Like the boy in E.T.," he added as if it was proof and she must be lying about her name.

He was slightly disappointed when Elliot said she hadn't drawn the tiger on the side of the van, but on the other hand, at least she thought it was cool, too. Maybe she wasn't so bad, then. Looking back at her, his brow furrowed again when she told him there weren't any waffles or Count Chocula. But when she pulled out a candy bar, Andy's whole face lit up like a Christmas tree.

With a gasp of awe, Andy started toward her. "I can have candy for breakfast?!" he asked with excitement and incredulousness filling his small voice. Clearly, this babysitter was new. Stacy would've never let him have a candy bar for breakfast. Or, really, for anything at all the whole day because candy was bad for his teeth, she'd said. A moment later, Andy snagged the candy bar from Elliot's hand and sat down beside her, munching happily away at it. "You're the best babysitter ever!" he managed with his mouth full.

Elliot sighed when Andy declared her name to be that of a boy's. Like she didn't have to deal with that enough in elementary school. "I know, that it's primarily a boy's name," she said, reaching up to push a strand of hair behind her ear. "But it can be a girl's name too." When he didn't look that convinced she rolled her eyes and scooted closer. "See, all my brothers were boys so my mom and dad just assumed I would be one too. Except I was a double X chromosome instead of an XY. So I was born a girl but they kept the name they'd picked out for me beforehand."

Elliot raised her eyebrows when Andy's face lit up over the candy bar. She had a feeling that maybe she'd done something that most adults didn't, but then again most of the adults she knew ate things out of the vending machine in the doctor's lounge for breakfast. "Sure, why not?" Elliot said with a small shrug as he took it from her. He sat down beside her and she had to look away from his hands.

Still, his compliment caused her a small blush of satisfaction. "Well, thank you," she said, trying to think of what she should do next. She picked up her journal and started catching up on everything. "Andy," she said slowly. "What's the last thing you remember?"

When Elliot tried to explain her name, Andy's brows raised doubtfully. He let out the tiniest of giggles when he saw her roll her eyes. He wasn't allowed to do that, because Daddy and Stacy both said it was rude, but it was funny when grown ups did, he thought. Then Elliot went on to say that she had brothers and from there, she lost Andy. "What's a chromosome?" he asked, curiosity piqued. "I don't have any brothers or sisters, what's that like?" he added, looking up at her as he munched on the chocolate bar, not bothering to cover his mouth so much as catch the half-chewed pieces that fell out as he spoke and shove them back into his mouth to finish chewing and swallowing them.

He looked back at her and giggled again, spraying chewed up pieces of chocolate across the the van before it occurred to him to cover his mouth. "You turned pink," he pointed out, grinning behind his little fingers. "I remember..." he started and swallowed the rest of his mouthful before continuing, "Daddy tucking me in and telling me a story about Mommy. And then I waked up next to you. So must be Daddy carried me when I was a-sleepeen. Sometimes he has to do that when I go to Stacy's really early in the morning," he explained nonchalantly.

Elliot paused for a moment when she heard Andy's giggle. For a moment the obvious stress she was under from the whole situation subsided and her face relaxed. That giggle had been pretty much adorable. "Well," she said slowly. "A chromosome is part of your DNA, it kind of carries your genes and makes you who you are." She shrugged when he asked about her brothers. "It's alright, I guess. I was the girl, so they kind of left me out of things, except for Barry who was always better at the girl things like hair and make-up and talking to boys." She sighed and shook her head, watching a few crumbs fall to his shirt.

He giggled again, but this time the sound was lost in the spray of chocolate. He pointed out that she was blushing, which only made her blush harder. "No I didn't!" She said, ducking her head to stare at the journal. His memory made her look up at him again though. "That's sweet," she said, giving him a small smile. "Your daddy must love you a lot."

Andy listened raptly as Elliot described a chromosone and he swallowed hard, coughing once as he fought against choking on the last too-big piece of candy before regaining his composure. "Like blue jeans?" he asked, eyes bright as he tapped one open hand on his leg. "How do jeans make you who you are?" he inquired, tipping his head just slightly to the side, like a puppy trying to comprehend a command. Then he wrinkled his nose and stuck out his tongue. "That's a-cuz girls have cooties," he said matter-of-factly.

This time, Andy laughed out loud, flopping over so that his head was in her lap and he was looking up at her. "Yuh huh and you did it again!" he accused, laughing harder. "Pink, pink, pink. I never saw somebody's face change colors before, can you do blue? I like blue," he said with a nod as he looked up at her. Given the angle, it mostly game out like a bob of his head against her thigh.

She looked up, then, from the book she was looking down at and suggested that his daddy must love him a lot. Stacy said that, too, sometimes, but Andy didn't know for sure. He never really said it like Stacy did, but maybe boys didn't say "I love you," and Andy had never thought to ask. Instead of thinking on it too much, he shrugged. "Prob'ly," was all he said.

Andy coughed and Elliot panicked, reaching out to pat him on the back to keep him from choking. God, that was all she needed, having to do the Heimlich on a kid. She'd probably break his ribs. He regained himself and pushed forward as if it was nothing. "Not blue jeans," Elliot said, still watching him carefully to make sure he wasn't going to die on her. "Genes, they're part of your DNA make-up." She raised her eyebrows and seemed to think about his words. "Well, Barry has a few more cooties than he should as a guy."

Andy started laughing harder and before she knew exactly what was happening his head was in her lap and Andy was looking up at her. She instinctively reached up to feel her cheek. "No, just pink," she said, giving him a self-conscious smile. God, he was kind of adorable.

"What was the story about?" Elliot asked, her curiosity piqued. "Was it how he met your mom?" Hey, she planned on getting married someday. She loved hearing about how people got together so she could be alert and ready for when Mr. Right came along.

"What's DNA makeup?" Andy asked Elliot, confused, raising his eyebrows with curiosity. She said that her brother Barry had cooties and Andy shook his head. "Boys don't have cooties," he said with a roll of his eyes and a "duuuhhh, Elliot," tone in his voice. Because, really, they didn't. Only girls had cooties. Elliot was a grownup; she should know that.

"It'd be way cooler if you could do blue, too," Andy insisted, smirking as he wiped his nose on the sleeve of his shirt again. His little nose wrinkled slightly as he pulled away his arm and replaced it with a finger to scratch the side of the bridge of his nose. "I got a itch," he informed her. ...and then sneezed sloppily into his hands, wiping them on the legs of his jeans as he sat up again.

Andy stretched his arms over his head and then let them fall heavily at his sides as Elliot asked what the story his father had been telling him before bed had been. "Ummm..." he stalled, trying to remember. "Daddy just tells stories about how pretty Mommy was and how she used to rock me to sleep when I was a baby, but I don't uhmember it," he admitted. "My mommy died when I was really little, but Daddy says that she's an angel now in Heaven, so I guess it's okay, because then Stacy said that even though she can't be here with me, she can take care of other little kids in Heaven who need mommies," he explained with a shrug of indifference.

"It's..." Elliot paused and sighed. "Nevermind. It's complicated. You'll learn about it in school when the right time comes." She raised and eyebrow and looked distant for a moment as she thought about Barry and his ways. "Yeah, you'll learn about that when the right time comes too," she said, focusing back on little Andy and giving him a small smile.

"Sorry to disappoint," Elliot said, letting her hand fall and accidentally brushing his curly hair on the way down. She was vaguely reminded of Rosa running her hand through her hair when she was little and she did it again, her fingers light and unsure as she stroked his hair. Hopefully it had the comforting effect she was looking for. She stopped when he wiped his nose on his sleeve, momentarily grossed out. As a doctor, that was so not right. He sat up again and Elliot gave a silent sigh of relief. She had no idea what to do with him.

"Oh," Elliot said, looking pained. "God, I'm sorry." He looked at Andy for a long moment and then looked away to rummage in her corner. "Want another piece of candy?"

For a moment, Andy just continued to look at Elliot with his eyes wide and curious. Finally, he pulled a face and shrugged. "Okay," he replied. She said that he'd learn it someday, so Andy had faith in that. When he was ready, he would know what it meant. So, eventually it'd be explained, if not today. That was good enough for him.

When Elliot started to stroke Andy's curls, he smiled and closed his eyes. "It's not nap time, I just woke up," he informed her. Clearly, the new babysitter didn't know how Stacy did things. That was okay, Andy could explain it for her. Usually, when Andy laid down for his nap, Stacy would stroke his hair until he fell asleep. Sometimes, she'd read while she did it, sometimes she'd sing, and sometimes she'd say nothing at all, just sitting beside him. He was always happy with the attention and affection, regardless of whatever else she might or might not be doing at the same time.

The expression on Elliot's face changed when Andy explained about his mother. He was about to give her another shrug when she apologized, but stopped when she offered him more candy. Grinning widely, Andy nodded excitedly. "Yeaaaahhhhhhhh!" he exclaimed in a quiet awed sort of stage whisper.

"Okay," Elliot repeated, giving a relieved smile. She really hadn't been sure how she was going to explain those things to a six year old. It was good to know he trusted her when she said he'd learn it eventually in school.

Elliot raised her eyebrows at his declaration that it wasn't nap time and then looked down at her hand. "Oh, right," she said, stopping in her attempt to comfort him. "Sorry." Why she was apologizing to a six year old she wasn't sure. For all the progress she'd made, Elliot wasn't sure she was that good at being an adult.

"Good," Elliot said, smiling again with relief as she handed him the candy. God, she was doing a terrible job here. She had no idea how to take care of kids. She picked up her journal and frantically flipped through it as he ate, trying to figure out what everyone else was doing. She looked up at Andy and gave him a forced smile. "Hey!" She said, trying to gather some enthusiasm. "Let's go see my friend Rose at the gym. There are other kids there."

When Elliot moved her hand from his hair and apologized, Andy grinned and opened his eyes again. "It's okay," he replied. Slowly, Andy stretched his arms over his head and then went to work munching on the candy bar Elliot had given him. "You're the coolest babysitter, ever," he said in a very serious voice.

While he ate and Elliot looked through her journal, Andy picked up the book beside him and flipped through the pages, frowning when he couldn't find any of the Ninja Turtles that should've graced the pages of his favorite and only coloring book. So, he scribbled a note onto one of the blank pages asking.

By the time she'd looked up and spoken again, Andy had already found out for himself that there were other children around to play with, so when Elliot suggested they go to the gym where the other kids were, Andy's face lit up again. "Okay!" he exclaimed. "We can play Ninja Turtles! You wanna play, Elliot?" he offered excitably.

Elliot couldn't help but smile and look pleased with herself at his compliment. She'd been afraid she was actually being a terrible babysitter, so hearing that she was not only good but cool from the one person who would know the best made her feel much better about the whole thing.

"Okay," Elliot repeated, infusing some of her own enthusiasm at letting the professionals, or at least more practiced adults, take care of little Andy. "We just have to make a stop so we can pick up some food for everyone first and then you can play with the other kids there." She paused when he asked if she wanted to play Ninja Turtles. She vaguely remembered the cartoon from her own childhood, though her mother had insisted that little girls didn't and shouldn't watch the same cartoons as her brother. In fact, most of Elliot's childhood memories involved her mother reading her passages out of romance novels. She'd been the only kid in kindergarten whose fairy tales had come out of a book that read Harlequin across the top instead of Grimm.

"I don't know," she said slowly. "I'm not sure I know how to play."

When Elliot mentioned food, Andy's eyes lit up again and he grinned. "Count Chocula?!" he asked hopefully. With that, he got to his feet and stretched his arms over his head trying to reach the ceiling above him unsuccessfully. His arms fell back down to his sides as he looked back at Elliot and waited for her to move. She would have to hold his hand, after all, if they were going to go outside. At least, Stacy and Dad always did.

"It's okay, it's really easy," Andy insisted. "Rose said she'll be Shredder, so you can be Splinter!" he insisted happily. Obviously, they would need a Splinter. Illyana said, in the journal, that she'd play April and Connor wanted to play and Tonks, so that left only one more Ninja Turtle and Splinter. Elliot was the grown-up, so it made the most sense to Andy that she play the leader...even if he was a rat. Still, he was a really smart rat, and Elliot was really smart. It fit in Andy's mind, anyway.

Elliot hummed, pressing her lips together for a moment as she shook her head slowly. "No, I don't think there's any Count Chocula, but we can check, right?" She watched him stretch, her hands moving up to his hands before they dropped to his side. She gave an involuntary shiver and then looked back at him as he seemed to be waiting for something. "So I'm just going to climb up to the front and drive us to the pharmacy to load up and then we'll go to the gym, okay?"

"Splinter?" Elliot repeated doubtfully. "As in a piece of wood?" Okay, how hard could that be, right? She'd only taken that one semester of drama in high school and it'd been the worst class of her high school career.

"Maybe there is. I hope so; it's my favorite," the little boy replied with the aforementioned hope in his eyes and smile. When Elliot didn't move right away, Andy tipped his head slightly to the side and watched her. Finally, she said that she was going to drive them to the pharmacy and then she'd take him to the gym to play. Andy grinned. "I get to ride in the back?!" he asked excitedly. Oh man that was so cool!

Andy's small face wrinkled up in disgust. "No, Splinter," he repeated. "The rat, you know? The leader," he explained in a voice that told her - as much as the rolled eyes showed her - how ridiculous he thought it was that she didn't already know that. "Don't you know?" he asked bluntly after a short pause.

"We'll keep an eye out for it," Elliot promised as she moved towards the front of the van. She slipped between the seats and into the driver's side. She looked back at Andy's excited grin and suddenly remembered what Rose had told her. "Oh, no," she said, waving him forward. "You've got to sit up here with me and the seat belts."

Elliot stared at Andy a little shocked by his bluntness. "No," she said, feeling as if she'd just flunked some important exam.

"K," Andy replied happily when she said that they'd keep an eye out for Count Chocula. They'd probably find some. It was the best cereal in the whole universe, after all, so it'd be stupid if they didn't have any. When Elliot went back on the idea that he was going to be riding in the back of the van, he furrowed his brow, crossed his arms and pouted. "You said I could!" he snapped grumpily.

The fact that Elliot didn't know who Splinter was was almost too much for him to process in his mind. He blinked back at her and made a face. "Everybody knows the Ninja Turtles and everybody who knows the Ninja Turtles knows Splinter," he replied matter-of-factly, the duuuuhhh! tone not at all hidden for her benefit.

Elliot raised her eyebrows. Was she seriously getting attitude from mini-Andy? "Well, I was wrong," Elliot said, her tone getting firm. "Look, you have to sit up here because there are seat belts. It's safer. Isn't being safe fun?"

She patted the passenger seat beside her and then blinked when he told her that everyone had heard of Splinter. "Not me," Elliot argued, not liking the fact that she was being talked down to by a kindergartner.

"Why don't you tell me about him?" Elliot asked.

Andy gave Elliot a grunt of annoyance and stamped one of his feet. "You said I could ride back here!" he shrieked, ignoring her suggestion that safety was fun. No it wasn't. Safety was boring. Danger was fun. Adventure was fun. Riding in the back of a van was fun.

His brow knit deeply when she patted the passenger seat and he finally made his way up there, throwing himself violently down into it just to make sure she knew how angry he was that he couldn't do what she'd said first. His arms were crossed over his chest again and he stared straight ahead as his tiny hands balled into fists. He made no further comment about the fact that Elliot was apparently the only person in the free world who didn't know who Splinter and the Ninja Turtles were. "No, never mind," he muttered, frowning and staring out the windshield grumpily.

Elliot's eyes widened at Andy's reaction to her and she gave a small huff. See, this was exactly why she wasn't good with kids. "I was wrong," Elliot said again. She sighed. "Andy, come on," she said, a slight pleading tone working it's way into her voice.

He finally made his way to the front and threw himself down in the seat that she usually occupied. He crossed his arms over his chest and Elliot reached past his balled up fists to pull the seat belt down across him as he told her to forget about Splinter.

She paused, leaning in to kiss his cheek lightly before pulling back and starting up the car. She didn't know why it bothered her so much, having a six year old mad at her, except somewhere down in there was Andy and she didn't like the idea of Andy being mad at her.

She took in a deep breath and pulled the van onto the dirt road before heading towards the Pharmacy.
