Hey, kid - told you we'd see each other again
↪
While Din had known it was an inevitability - the task set out before him to return Grogu to one of his own - it had still hurt when that day had come. More than he had even been prepared for. Even with the distraction of showing up in a whole other world it was there. An ache that had permeated every part of him.
Lonely.
He had been lonely before the kid. In a way he hadn't even realized until suddenly there was someone taking up space. The little coos and gurgles that had filled what was usually silence in the cockpit of the Razor Crest. To practically hearing his own voice more in the past two years than he had in all the years before. Conversations during those long stretches of travel, even if they were mostly one sided.
Grogu had reminded Din of something he long since thought he'd lost. Home. A family. A Clan of Two. A life really. Something more than just going from one bounty to the next. One even with friends as they travelled the Galaxy, allies turning into more than just simply that.
Losing that - even if was the end of the task set to him, even if it might be temporary (though how temporary was yet to be seen) - had been more than Din could really bear. Loss had been something he'd long been familiar with and really, he was just so damn tired of it.
Being in Vallo had been another kick. He had promised Grogu they would see each other again - a promise that seemed harder now that Din had no control over that. People just - came and went as Vallo pleased. All he could do was wait.
Thankfully it appeared he needn't wait long.
Din quickly made his way to Papa's Pride, and ever the realist he didn't dare entirely give into the fact Grogu was there until he saw his son with his own eyes.
The helmet masked the visible relief as he did just that. Spotting Grogu on a bench with those who had found him hovering around. But it was there in his body language, the small and subtle shift of his shoulders as the tension he had been carrying just - let go a little. He moved to the bench and knelt down in front of Grogu. He smiled, despite knowing Grogu wouldn't see, but that it would be heard in his tone nonetheless.
"Hey, kid - told you we'd see each other again," he said softly, a coo from Grogu in return.
Grogu cooed again and reached for Din's helmet, a cock of his head. "Good to see you too, Pal," Din said.
Grogu's fingers moved to the bottom of Din's helmet with a bit of a demanding noise. Din just laughed quietly. "So that's how it is," he said, amused. He pulled Grogu's hand away and reached into his pocket for the ball he had tucked away.
"Got something for you," he said as he pulled it out and offered it to Grogu. The Child cooed happily, the helmet momentarily forgotten in favor of the ball. Din chuckled and handed over the ball. He rested his hand lightly on Grogu's head before he stood.
"Just let me thank these nice people for taking care of you and we'll head home, alright, Grogu?" There was an affirmative noise in return and Din turned to the others to set about doing just that.
