Suppose someone comes from a time when the idea of women seeking higher education wasn't necessarily a prominent thing and thus that someone had little occasion to consider what one might like to learn if given the opportunity to pursue academic endeavors. How would that someone go about looking into such a pursuit, and what should they study once they do so? What might their options actually be?

I don't think my time was entirely terrible, but I do enjoy some of the options available to me here.

Most time periods aren't entirely terrible from my experience. Except the ones where worlds end.
