Suppose someone comes from a time when the idea of women seeking higher education wasn't necessarily a prominent thing and thus that someone had little occasion to consider what one might like to learn if given the opportunity to pursue academic endeavors. How would that someone go about looking into such a pursuit, and what should they study once they do so? What might their options actually be?

Oh, Daphne! What wonderful news. You know, you have every option now! I've been to the library and attended some of the one-off classes they've offered here, both in the city and for Outlanders. It's incredible.

You know, I had a feeling that you might enjoy this particular topic of conversation. How have you found your classes? Easy enough to acclimate to?

Oh yes, they've been great. Well, the sex education one was quite uncomfortable but also very enlightening. Honestly, what is so hard about telling us this information in the first place? Men seem to know it and yet we're kept in the dark.

Ah, yes. I have a few thoughts about that particular lack of knowledge that I'd love the opportunity to bring up with our mother. In the meantime, I'm grateful for the amount of accessibility this places has. It's almost hard to reconcile the fact that, a handful of months ago, I didn't realize just how much we didn't have access to because it was normal. I'm sure you realized that far more than I did.

It's astounding, really, and I feel so silly and ignorant about what I didn't know - what I didn't even realize I didn't know! But now I do and it's much better. I've simply been reading so much. I know you enjoy playing the pianoforte - or at least you were more studious with it than I ever was. Is there something music-related, perhaps? Or are you considering something completely different than what we know?

I do enjoy the pianoforte and I'd love to continue playing it, but I'm not sure I want to study it more than I already have. I enjoy it and I don't want to lose that sense of enjoyment, if that makes sense. It's hard, though, because there are so many options and I don't know where to begin. What if there's an option I don't even know I have that I would love more than anything else?

Yes, that makes sense. I feel that way about pretty much anything I started to enjoy that Mama then pushed me to continue with. The best part about being here is that if I start to lose that interest, I can move on to something else! I'm sure there is loads out there that we aren't at all aware of!

Have you found anything here that you're enjoying just for the sake of enjoying it? No strings attached?

I enjoyed learning about any number of things, but I don't think I had the opportunity to really attach myself to one area of study in particular. It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?

It can be, yes. But it helps to know where your interests lie. Or, perhaps, if you have no idea, you could look into some of the general education classes available.

It's sounding like general education might be the way to go. Maybe knowing I don't have to decide just yet might make it a tad less daunting?

I could argue that you don't have to decide ever, really. You can be a lifelong learner, if you so chose.

That's a fair point, and I dare say we likely have a lifelong learner in the shape of my younger sister for certain. For me, this step is more for...self-sustainability? I want the knowledge and wherewithal to be able to make my own path in this world. I want to know that whatever I do, it's because I both chose and earned it. Taking classes seemed a good place to start at the very least.

I have been studying for nearly a year now and I'm still waffling over just what I might want to study. There are so many options. Is there anything in particular you really enjoy doing?

Yes, exactly, it's the number of options that's so overwhelming. I don't even know where to begin. You say you're still deciding, so what have you been studying in the meantime?

I was able to do just some general courses at first, but I think that I am leaning towards doing two focuses of study, in Linguistics and Literature. Both fascinate me and I just don't think I can choose.

So... college. You want college? Or high school? Not sure when women in your time stopped studying, but I've looked up a few areas here and I've found a good university to enroll in. I think the options are limitless, it just depends on what you want to actually do, what your own interests are.

College, I suppose? I'm honestly not sure. As much as I love the limitless possibilities, I can't say I wouldn't like them narrowed down a bit.

[info]razorclaws

Oh, narrowing them down is easy. Or doesn't have to be! You can also do double majors or a major and a minor.

Do you like science? What about history? Or do you like math or writing?

All of that feels foreign to me, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

I don't know that I can rule any of those out with my lack of experience, but I do enjoy history and writing, both.

Thankfully, it's easy to learn what each and every term means.

And also, thankfully, you can switch around if you suddenly lose interest in one thing. Any particular kind of history you're more into?

Ha, I'll take your word for it!

That's a really good question, actually. I would say history, in general, but being some 200 years in the past, I suppose a lot of history isn't really history to me.

SO I jumped back into school here after not being able to go for almost a decade and I would just stick with general studies if I were you? For a semester or two you can just stay unfocused, take some basic courses and then branch into something more specific later?

Three votes for general courses, if I assume Cassandra also recommends her experience. That seems to be a good reason to lean that way.

Most colleges and universities won't require you to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year or until after a certain amount of credits. You can find something you like during that time, or just audit classes that sound interesting to you. That's what my boyfriend does.

Yep, a math course, English course, science, that sort of thing. It gives you a good feel for the college and doesn't completely overwhelm you. I threw in a Death in Perspective course too for fun my first semester.

That sounds wonderful, actually. I've slammed close my laptop so many times whilst trying to even figure out where to get started. Knowing I can dip my toes into a little bit of everything without too much commitment will be very good for my computer, probably.
