A tall ship and a star to steer her by ([info]starwreck) wrote in [info]valarnet,

Found the wreckage of the Enterprise. The alien that had led us to this planet turned out to have lured us with her story of distress, but I'd already figured that out and baited her myself. It was just me and Chevok until we found Scotty and an alien named Jaylah who's been hiding out in a cloaked, crashed Starfleet ship that's nearly a hundred years old. I'm going to assume that's our ticket offworld, if we can get her into the sky.

We know where the crew is. The only question is how do we save them?

Wow. Well, that certainly works against the theory Your experience would suggest that the dreams are not intentional, but rather the result of some sort of thinning or a hole in the wall between realities that is causing memories and experiences to leak (so to speak) through and affect those in our reality. I can't say I love what the implications of that situation would be.

That's been my going theory. Bleedover from other realities. I'm thankful I've never dreamed first hand some of the ones I visited.

There's some other implications from my dreams, both from dreaming first hand and seeing the result from that dream. You can never fix a timeline. Rather, if you go back to say, stop an assassination that led to your people being exterminated, you can save one timeline, but your own still exists, you just created a branch where those events never happened. (I first dreamed the outcome, then later dreamed about my future self that sent herself back to my timeline by swapping her mind into my younger body and vice versa)

That is mind-boggling. I don't envy you. But that does mean something very interesting: The collective multiverse is ever-expanding, and presumably without limits.

I'm hoping that this is not the precursor to some sort of breakdown of the system, because, considering how vast it is, one would assume that any small dissolution of the barrier between realities would cause two distinct worlds to impact each other. Even just a merging of sorts between the two would be chaotic and likely destructive (multiple versions of the same person would just be the beginning), but the molecular complexity that make up entire worlds mean it's more likely that it would be less like two drops of water converging, and more like two hydrogen bombs colliding.

That... also happened in my dreams. Reality kind of collapsed in on itself until there was one reality that took parts from some other realities. It was about as chaotic as you'd expect, until the aftermath and things seemed mostly normal. Like it had always been that way. From what I understand it was because of too many people messing with the timeline, with a lot of holes and paradoxes.

But then it immediately began splitting off new timelines as people made new choices, and I'm not entirely sure many of those 'dead' realities actually died.

Wow. Considering that we know these alternate timelines actually exist, that information does not bode well for the future of our world. Maybe it can be fixed, though, since, except here in the OC, we don't possess the capability of creating holes and paradoxes. A different source may indicate that a different ending can be reached.

What of the OC is actually like a pressure release valve, and its the only thing keeping everything from collapsing?

That's very possible. With no evidence supporting either theory, though, we face possible destruction no matter what. Action would be catastrophic if your theory is correct, while inaction would be just as bad if mine happened to be correct.

We could start with observation.

Oh, I started that months ago. Granted, I haven't been able to keep up with it recently, but I have notes from back then. I don't remember anything particularly telling, but I could look them over, anyway.

I'll share some of mine. We should have a white board.

I have three, and an open conference room. I'd love to compare notes.

I'm more of a computer whiz but you can't beat a good whiteboard.

I agree. Computers, for all of their advantages, can be somewhat limiting at times.

Maybe I can build something. There's some great holographic tech from my dreams.

I'd put together the fusion reactor I helped build there but there were complications. Granted the complications had nothing to do with the reactor and everything to do with mutant hunting robots, but I don't want to tempt fate.

As a solution, you mean? That may be jumping the gun a bit. a pen and a writing surface are usually the best places to start, in my experience. The rest will come later.
