A tall ship and a star to steer her by ([info]starwreck) wrote in [info]valarnet,

Found the wreckage of the Enterprise. The alien that had led us to this planet turned out to have lured us with her story of distress, but I'd already figured that out and baited her myself. It was just me and Chevok until we found Scotty and an alien named Jaylah who's been hiding out in a cloaked, crashed Starfleet ship that's nearly a hundred years old. I'm going to assume that's our ticket offworld, if we can get her into the sky.

We know where the crew is. The only question is how do we save them?

At least your dreams are showing ya that your crew is alright! At least you've found a few of them, yeah?

Nothing better then a rescue mission!

There's at least half of them alive.

Well, more than you had believed before!

I'm sure the rest are safe though. Hopefully you guys come up with a super cool rescue plan!

I'll take effective over cool.

But I don't mind cool.

Why not both?

I'm sure you'll be able to do both.

You'll figure it out. After all, how is a much better place to be than if or can.

It's all about semantics. That and it's one step closer because it means you're figuring out a course of action instead of wallowing in defeatist talk.

It helps that there's no time to wallow in the dreams.

No, I think the more pressing question is why haven't I seen your spaceship?

I heard a rumour that you've taken quite a few people aboard already and I'm extremely put out.

So now you will rescue the crew, get a new ship, and go on to the next adventure - maybe after a huge battle or something.

The Franklin belongs in a museum when all is said and done. I don't know if I'll get another ship. Not everyone can after they lose theirs.

Huh. My dreams are generally 3/4ths paperwork, with a kidnapping or an assassination attempt thrown in for flavor. I will concede that the only friend I have can fly, but I don't know that yet, and even if I did, that has little to do with me.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm jealous that the other you is a high-stakes adventurer that manages to have a spaceship that he crashes, before quickly finding another spaceship that he has to rebuild before he can fly it. If 9-year-old me had not been bored to tears by video games, she likely would have designed one that was exactly like that.

I'm sure it's not nearly as fun living it, but if your only other choice was budget meetings and contract renewals, I think you'd come to see it my way.

This is the second life I've dreamed. In the first set of dreams, I had to sacrifice that Enterprise, but it was for a better cause, and no one was onboard except a boarding party of Klingons.

In both cases we're explorers.

And this other version of you: Was he essentially the same person? I don't mean in the way you and your dream counterparts are similar if you disregard the spaceship; I'm asking if, disregarding differences in their respective histories that resulted in different decisions being made, they were essentially living the same life. Because dreaming of two versions of what is essentially the same life is extremely odd, not only because the majority of us only dream of one alternate life, but also because it's unclear what you're meant to learn from seeing them both (the leading theory as to why we dream alternate lives is that it is a lesson of some kind). It isn't as if the life you're currently leading is that of a starship captain, in which case one could argue that seeing another version of the same life was intended to be a sort of 'what if' exercise that acted as a cautionary tale. No, your life is vastly different, so it stands to reason that whatever lesson you were to learn from Star Captain James could have been learned the first time. I, of course, haven't seen your dreams, so I'm just theorizing. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Some people have all the luck.

I'd say they were living the same life. And this isn't the first time. One of my earlier dreams, there was a transporter accident and I swapped places into a sort of mirror universe, one where humanity had conquered the galaxy and most of us were evil bastards.

This time I started dreaming from the perspective of this alternate me. The big timeline change was my father dying the day I was born, and then later the ship responsible for his death destroying one of the founding planets of the Federation.

This me was a lot more rash and impulsive, a bit like how I was in the waking world before I started dreaming the first time. Much younger, too, when he was forced to take command.

Hmm. Your experience, coupled with the one detailed below, raise a significant question: If the dreams are the inadvertent result of some sort of fraying in the fabric between realities, why are only a few of us dreaming of multiple lives? I'd assume that all of us have more than just the one life we dream of, so I'm very curious as to why this phenomenon isn't more widespread.

Butting in because I've dreamed of about 12 different versions of me, all from drastically different timelines. Including what appeared to be 'what if everyone turned into zombies' and then the 'what if our leader died before he could form our team and then this really bad guy called Apocalypse took over North America and it's about as bad as you can imagine it.' Most of them are varying degrees of traumatic.

Although the one where I was a resistance leader was pretty cool.

I'm not sure there's a lesson to be learned other than that there are an infinite number of realities and sometimes we can dream them.

My first dreams, the 'main' ones, back me up on this. I got stuck in a few dozen different alternate Earths over the course of a few weeks once. Some were interesting, there was the 'we're all dinosaurs' world, and of course the 'Nazis Won' world was was particularly unpleasant for me.
