Today, in my first period shop class, a boy asked me out.

He, then, proceeded to look over my work for class and said that I was pretty good..."for a girl." I rolled my eyes and without a word continued o my work.

Why are boys so dumb? At least, my teacher has the common sense to say that I have done some of the best work he's ever seen. Not "best work for a girl," but best work. Period. I feel that this kind of work will warrant many comments like that and I wish it wasn't this way. However, I'm ready to prove everyone of what I am capable of.

Oh, I considered it before remembering that I was in class.

Minor details. I could show up and shake his hand with some automail?

I don't want to injure him, yet.

But if he says something like that to, or around, me, I will not hesitate to hurt him.

I feel like that's not a valid excuse. It's been used for so long you think that people would have started to educate boys so that they could do away with such a lame excuse.

Its not. But it seems its in their brains. I get it a lot with martial arts.

Sounds like you have a great dad.

I learned mechanics from grandmother and a little bit of first aid from both parents, since they were both doctors.

Since I was like 5, or 6. Whenever my parents were away, I would be taken care of by my grandmother and I would always accompany her while she worked on cars.

If there's a next time, I will hit him.

That's fair.

I think boys are sort of taught to expect certain things to be easy for them - sports and mending things and such. They just don't even think that girls are better than them at those things, even when they are. There's exceptions, of course, but by and large, I see that happen in class all the time.

My grandmother has warned me about these things, so it wasn't all that shocking but it's never been said to me. It caught me off guard.

It is a bit confusing, isn't it? It's a bit like someone from the 1800s being teleported to you for a moment. Next thing they'll yell at us for wearing trousers, or sending mail.

Hopefully. I think it's a little easier to change those kind of behaviors while you're still in school for some reason. Easier to learn new ones.

I have been doing this kind of stuff since I was a kid. I even embarrass the guys when it comes to knowledge about fixing cars. I don't mean to but I like knowing people know the right thing.

I think my lack of answer made him wary of me.

Nothing wrong with that. Maybe they should look at you knowing more as an incentive to learn more themselves rather than be embarrassed over it.

Which might not be a bad thing.

I wish I could...Believe me I wish I could tell people to use situations like that as incentive to learn more.

No one should lower the standards they hold themselves to for anyone. Or the standards they have for people to treat them as an equal.
