The Twelfth Doctor doesn't like hugs ([info]againsthugging) wrote in [info]valarnet,

What is it with young people and having to socialize via a non-personable machine like a computer? What is the point of letting your eyeballs melt out of your head from staring at a screen for hours on end? There's a huge world out there full of people you can spend your time talking to in person. You know, if that's your thing. If you don't like people then I suppose you can simply sit there behind your computer, continue typing into that machine and let your eyeballs melt out of your head. Either way, no skin off my back.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is hello, this is pointless.

Ah! Clara! There you are. At least I believe that is you. It is you, isn't it?

One, no one said you needed to use this. Two, since when do you socialise?

Hi, dad.

I didn't say I was using this to socialize, did I? No. I didn't.

Now that I have your attention, however...are you alright? There seems to be unruly violence here.

You realize you complained about all that, and then continue to use the computer.

Hello, it is pointless but welcome to the 21st century.

I'm Scottish, I complain about everything. Especially if it's somehow related to England.

That explains it then.

Keep your complaints about England to yourself though, I am rather fond of my homeland.

Oh no, you're English. Can't promise that, I tend to speak my mind as thoughts come into it. Though I can promise there will be plenty of other things I can complain about other than England.

I'd say hello back, but I'm afraid I can't read any of this. My eyeballs are too melted. I've only been able to get a vague impression of what you were saying through my psychic abilities.

Clearly you are one of the young people I was speaking of. Perhaps you should work on strengthening those psychic abilities more given the loss of your eyeballs.

Or I could just carry on with my addiction to technology in the hopes of implanting some sort of cybernetic eyes. That could work as well.

Or along the way you could lose some other part of your body, like your ears. Or even your brain. It could melt out your ears if you aren't careful.

I think it's easier for some people to communicate through the computer, especially those that might be lacking in social skills.

But hello! I'm Rose Tyler! And you know Clara? (Sorry, couldn't help but see your guys' conversation)

That's fine for them, then. They can just sit there in their solitary little worlds and all of that.

Yes. Clara's my daughter. How do you know Clara?

But then look at all the connections you're making being on here!

Clara's your daughter? Well it's a pleasure to meet you! I'm Rose, a friend of Clara's and John's! And Troy's, although I haven't heard from him in awhile...

Anyway, have you just moved to California?

I would only call them connections if I proceed to speak to them more than once or twice.

You may wish to rethink using the word pleasure. Though as a friend of my daughter and nephews, I suppose it's only fair I introduce myself. I'm Duncan Fletcher, Scottish, and I tend to complain a lot. I also don't like wasting my time. Or people who waste my time with useless drivel.

I would not say moved, yet. I did just arrive, though.

Oh, just what California needed. A spark of realism from the ultimate realist.

Hello Duncan, pleasure to see you among the sun and palm trees, and glittering actresses and actors; well, at least seeing your texts. I do agree with you, by the way, socializing is best done in a personal setting, face to face, not hidden behind a computer screen. Still, with so many busy lives, it helps people keep up when they otherwise wouldn't be able to, really you should learn to embrace all of life's wonderful touches.

Also helps keep in touch with the students who spend all of their time in front of a computer.

I could care less about the glittering actresses and actors. I never mixed well with the sun. Though I suppose it's good to see you here. Good that you're alive and all that.

But if I embrace life's touches, what would I have to complain about then? No, I'm not going to accept these things. I don't want to accept them.

So. Typical question and all that, what are you doing to keep yourself out of trouble here? Assuming you're staying out of trouble. If you aren't staying out of trouble then the question would be what are you doing?

Oh, I'm more than certain if you embraced life's touches you'd find a complaint somewhere. Maybe how the embrace was lukewarm, or a bit too tight or clingy.

Still, yes, good to be alive, thank you. Always a fortunate turn of events when I am.

I am very much out of trouble, too busy of a life melding the minds of young collegiate scholars, and reading. You know me, can't put a book down, means I can't spend too much time causing a stir. Though, Clara being here now, I'm sure we could figure something out.

I actually find computers much less irritating than humans.

Also I'm awful at face-to-face social interaction. Apparently I'm far too blunt for my own good.

So that's my reason, I suppose.

Ah, someone I can agree with. I can be too blunt as well. Though some would say I'm too cranky and condescending at times, but I just say what's on my mind. Most people just don't like what I have to say. Which I don't care, I've gotten this far in life and I'm still alive, so clearly I haven't done anything too horrible to people.

Still these computers suck too much time from people sometimes. There's plenty of things to do in the world other than stare at a screen all day.

A kindred spirit. I feel like we should get together and have tea on the front porch while we yell at small children to get off our lawn.

Considering I'm a computer programmer, I suppose we can agree to disagree. But I do have hobbies. I went out and made a snowman, when we had proper snow.
