There's only one question that annoys me still, after almost ten years and that's from people who know mine and Lian's situation and ask, especially around Mother's Day, if Lian gets upset on Mother's Day cause she never knew her mother. I mean, I get why they'd ask, but the answer is, no. She's known what went on with me and Jade since she was pretty young. Some people told me that I shouldn't tell her until she was older, but I didn't want her to get to preschool or daycare and then come home and ask me why she didn't have a mother or anything. So, for the record, no, Lian does not miss her mother on Mother's Day.

I don't have children of my own, but I have to say, my Da left when I was eight, and if my mum hadn't been honest with me, I'd have taken it poorly. Even at eight I wanted to know, and from what you say, your daughter seems the same.

My daughter is almost ten and her mother left pretty much the day after she was born. Imagine getting that phone call from the hospital. But yeah, I figured that Lian knowing the truth as early as possible was best.

I didn't know my father had fucked off until I was in secondary school. Mum told me he'd died, instead of that he was alive and living in Cornwall with a waitress. You're doing a good thing by being honest with her. I still feel like I can't trust my mum, if I can be honest with a complete stranger. Sorry, it's late and I have pregnancy insomnia.

I almost wanted to say that you and Lian should give Darcy an "Almost-Mother's Day" gift just to see if it would freak her out, but then I realized that would probably be mean.

By the way, ask Lian if she wants me to kidnap her from school on Tuesday or Wednesday; I forgot to ask her the last time we hung out. Then write me a note for that day so I don't get arrested and assume you won't see your daughter until dinner time. Unless you want to come to the park with us, in which case write me a note anyway and be packed by three thirty on the dot.
