Note: If you're unfamiliar with his canon and tag into him, please don't be discouraged if he doesn't laugh at jokes or even answer direct questions. Roland is not a very social animal, but I had to get him out there anyway XD
If a man couldn't afford his habits, he shouldn't keep them. Roland wouldn't have been able to afford his if he didn't roll his own smokes, and he did so now, turning the cigarette between his fingers until it rolled neatly around the generous pinch of tobacco he'd placed in the middle. Long fingers expertly and meticulously ensured that not a leaf or sprig of tobacco dropped from the cigarette. When it was perfect, Roland licked the crease, then closed it. Anyone looking at it would have guessed it had been machine rolled and pressed.
It was against The Rules to smoke while in uniform, but fuck the god damned rules. What good was being supervisor if he couldn't break the rules now and again? He'd removed his blazer so the smell of smoke wouldn't cling to the material. It was still safe on the back of his swivel chair inside the office building across the street. The sleeves of his blue work shirt were rolled up to his elbows, and the only sign that he was a security guard was the utility belt where he wore his weapon, pepper spray, and badge.
The only thing that felt good on him was the weapon that gave him a shift of weight in the left hip, that knee bent, that hip cocked as he brought his Zippo to the end of the cigarette that was now between his lips. A flutter of a breeze caught the flame and Roland cupped it, canting his head so the cigarette met the lick of the small fire. For all the world, Roland Deschain looked like the Marlboro man, completely out of place in a park meant for families. Around him, parents ran after their screaming kids, and dogs chased Frisbees. Roland was glad for the gazebo when he found it and stepped underneath it to sit and have his smoke in peace.
