Who: Mia Dearden, Eli Loker, Cal Lightman, Emily Lightman
What: Cocktail party for Lightman Group née Diogenes Project née Lightman Group.. Are we confused yet?
Warnings: Rated PG-13 for language and general douchebaggery
UPDATE: At the end, it gets a little smutty!

When they were shopping, Kimber had been pretty insistent that a black 'little-black-dress' was far too boring for Mia. Mia was glad to see Kimber getting a little more animated, and was willing to humor her crazy fashion ramblings. Mia ended up with a red 'little-black-dress' that had plenty of class and looked 'outrageous' on her. Despite his already having seen it in the store, Mia was hoping to impress Eli with the full package, after she'd done her hair and makeup.

She wasn't really dreading this as much as Eli seemed to be. Sure, the formal party thing wasn't exactly her cup of tea, but she enjoyed any excuse she had to hang out with Eli. She liked that he wasn't worried about his coworkers seeing him with a younger girl, but he wasn't overly eager to 'show her off', either. She was just his girlfriend. Almost like they were normal, or something.

The venue was nice. A fancy ballroom at a hotel, waiters in bow ties, candles on the tables. Mia declined the champagne flute that was offered to her, snagging a little hors d'oeuvre instead. "So these are the high rollers, huh? Do you work with all these people, or are they just investors and crap?" She really only knew Eli's secretary, and she didn't see her here.

She wouldn't have minded if Eli drank. She just wasn't old enough, and didn't want Eli or anyone else getting into trouble on her account. She smirked a little as he staked his claim, so to speak, and was surprised to find she didn't mind it in the least. "So, what's the plan? Rub a few shoulders and cut out early? Or take full advantage of the free food?" It did look all fancy.

"I was going to eat the free food and avoid - " He stopped speaking mid-sentence, blinking hard. "Oh, god. Oh, this cannot be - he ..." His voice trailed off, and he tried to steer her away from the food table.

Mia tilted her head at Eli's odd reaction, having a hard time imagining anything that would make him act like that. She glanced around for the source of his distress, but didn't see anything obvious. As he was steering her away from the precious food, she reached back across the table to grab a strawberry.

Lightman had been vortexed in about five minutes before his new secretary had reminded him about the party he needed to be attending. He'd had enough time to see the sparkling website and grill the secretary for a few answers. He'd found out that she really did believe he'd been in New York for the past several years, and his questions made her think he was a bit crazy. He'd had a dry cleaning bag with a very nice suit jacket and tie, but he was stuck with his jeans, and that was fine with him. If any members of the board had a problem with his attire, they hadn't addressed it with him yet.

Eli's attempt to escape was sadly too late. Cal had already spotted him, and was making a beeline for him. "Loker," he said, grinning out of one corner of his mouth. "This is a surprise, hm?" He could tell from the look on Eli's face that it was. He turned to the girl who certainly didn't look like she belonged with Eli. "Your date's lovely, did you hire her for the evening?"

It had been a joke--in poor taste, granted--but Cal hadn't expected to be right. Still, the confirmation was all over Mia's face. He'd expect any self-respecting woman to show anger at being called a prostitute, but Mia's expression looked as though she'd just been caught red-handed. Lightman's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He looked her up and down, not bothering to conceal his appraisal before turning back to Loker. "Well, they're certainly paying you more than I did."

Eli smiled at Mia - a tightlipped thing, betraying his anger. "Will you excuse me, Mia? I need to talk for a minute to my boss." He kissed her cheek. "I love you. Just give me a minute."

He took Cal by the arm, walking with him - away from Mia. "Could you not offend my girlfriend, please? When did you get here?"

A little part of Mia wanted to punch this dude. Another little part wanted to see Eli do it. The rules of civil society would probably leave both parts disappointed, though. She wasn't completely furious. She could play it cool. She wasn't humiliated.. A little self-conscious, maybe, worrying that she may have overdone her makeup or something. She returned Eli's smile and nodded as he left.

Lightman smirked a little, letting his intern drag him away. "Did you meet her on Buddybook too?" he teased. Once they'd gained some distance, he extracted his arm from Loker's. "About twenty minutes ago. What'd I miss?"

"You missed a lot, and no, I didn't. You and I and her were all brought here from where we were before. Basically, it's an alternate dimension with magic, gods, goddesses, superheroes, vampires, stuff like that. Mia is my girlfriend, I love her, and we've been dating for a while. And yes, she was pimped out by an ex-boyfriend because she ran away from home to avoid her abusive dad. She's amazing, and I'm surprised you still have all your teeth."

He hadn't lied, but that was about as tactful as he could manage. He folded his arms, gritting his teeth.

Cal had caught the sparkly version of this story, so he didn't look at all phased by the 'goddesses, superheroes and vampires' bit. He gave Eli a little 'Yeah, carry on,' hand motion. He did pause at Mia's background. He'd made the comparison to Emily already with the mention of Buddybook, and Mia couldn't be more than a few years older than his daughter. Normally Lightman was excellent at being a callous asshole who considered himself so far above his targets that they might as well not even be human. Making a mental connection between them and his daughter, though..

"I'm quite attached to my teeth," was his only witty reply.

"Then don't mention my girlfriend's past again so flippantly. I know you didn't know before, but now you do. Only warning. Want some fondue? It's good." He smiled and motioned with his head toward the buffet table. And Mia. Who was being chatted up by an investor. "Hey! Penguin suit!" Eli rushed off toward his girlfriend, glaring at the guy."

Lightman's eyebrows shot up at Loker's little warning. For most people, threatening your boss would be a career-ender. Lightman tended to be a bit more forgiving when he knew he deserved it, however. Still, that didn't make it any less amusing. He didn't answer, just watching Eli run off and make a fool of himself.

Mia had been texting Ollie while Eli was away, and was trying to politely ignore the slightly inebriated man who had just approached her. "Oh really? You don't say." She wasn't in the mood for this crap, and was telling Ollie as much. She looked up when Eli came back. "Hey."

Eli glared at the guy who wandered off, realizing he'd rather not mess with the younger, not drunk boyfriend. "Hey. I am ... so sorry about that. He thought it would be funny, but it really wasn't, and I've already yelled at him."

"It's okay," she said, finding his hand and intertwining her fingers with his. "I'm fine," she said, kissing his cheek. She was about to put her phone back in her purse when it beeped again. She glanced down at it, reading Ollie's most recent message. She couldn't hold back a little outburst of laughter. She showed her screen to Eli.

Mia Dearden (8:47pm): Still not as comforting as punching them.

Ollie Queen (8:51pm): Well, back in my rich assholin' days, I used to sleep with their wives. So there's that as an option.

Eli chuckled, shaking his head. "Don't you dare sleep with their wives, I'd get jealous." Even if he was a red blooded guy, he still would rather her not.

He blinked when he felt a tug at his pants cuff, then winced when he felt a sharp pain in his calf. "Ow! Is that - a cat?"

"That's my mentor, ladies and gentlemen, Oliver Queen." Some fatherly advice. She giggled, having no intention of sleeping with anyone's wives. "Guess I'll have to fall back on the punching, then."

She blinked, looking down at the cat. "Aww. It's all cute and tiny." The cat seemed to recoil when Eli yelped, scrambling around to climb ontop of his shoe. She stood up, putting the pads of her paws against his shin, careful not to use her claws.

Eli blinnked when he noticed the cat, reaching down to pick it up. "Hey, little guy, or girl. What're you doin' at a party?"

The kitten was small enough that it could fit in his hands. She looked straight at him and mewed. Her eyes were odd, not very cat-like.

"Hey, kitty," Mia said, reaching out to pet the cat. The cat shied away form Mia's touch, leaning against Eli. "Oh." Mia pulled her hand away, a little confused.

Eli scritched the cat behind its ears, blinking when it didn't like Mia. "She's nice, promise," he murmured. He shrugged and continued to pet her. "Yeah, so, anyway, my boss is sorry."

Mia shrugged. "Your boss is a dick. But I promise not to hit him. I wouldn't want to get you in trouble."

The cat mewed again before closing its eyes and purring at Eli's touch, nuzzling his hand. It seemed pretty high strung for a cat, but ear scritches seemed to calm it down. "I think it likes you," Mia commented.

"Is it bad that I'm hoping he'll try to mug somebody so I can kick his ass?" Mia didn't mind the arm around her, but she didn't lean in too close to him, not wanting to scare the cat. "You're thinking of taking the kitty home, aren't you?"

"What've you got there?" Lightman asked of the cat, sauntering back up to the pair. He came bearing peace offerings, a glass of champagne for Eli and a bottle of Coke for "Mia, is it?" The wait staff didn't seem to be serving soft drinks, so Cal must have gone out of his way to pull that one off. "Lov--"

The cat was deeply relaxed now, curled up into a little purring ball in Eli's hand. The air started to shimmer and then she transformed into a very confused and very naked Donavette.

"Honestly, Dr. Lightman might." He blinked and shook his head, smiling and shrugging. "The kitty is skittish, it needs someone to look after it.

When Lightman came back, Eli took the champagne and sipped carefully. He smiled at the Coke, appreciating the peace offering.

Which was when he dropped his very naked secretary. "Ohkay, naked secretary, let's fix that - " He was very near to flailing, but he managed to take off his suit jacket and wrap it around Donavette's shoulders.

"Wow, okay, yeah!" Mia should have been used to the crazy by now, but this was a new one for her. She turned around, her back to Donavette and tried to stand between her and most of the crowd.

Cal's eyebrows shot up. "They weren't kidding about the whole weird thing." He wasn't ogling the girl, but he didn't turn away, either. Eli had gotten his jacket on her, after all. "Did you say secretary?"

Donavette was absolutely mortified. Her shoulders were hunched and she was shaking. She clung to the jacket, her breath short little gasps.

Eli wanted to apologize to Mia, but he hadn't really done anything to apologize for. "Yes, I said secretary, will you help me get her upstairs and into the offices?" He ran his back over Donavette's shoulders, communicating without speaking. You've done nothing wrong. Can you turn back into the cat for a little while so we can get you some clothes?

Mia glanced sideways at Lightman, noticing he hadn't turned around. She had half a mind to side-step so that she was between him and Donavette. Instead she focused on crowd control. Most people hadn't noticed the commotion, but a small group of guys were leaning in, trying to get a look. "Move along, asshole," Mia snarled at the closest, glaring.

That got Cal's attention. He did enjoy antagonizing shareholders, but he usually preferred a more subtle approach. "Absolutely," he assured Eli before walking away from them. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he said loudly, making his way toward the little stage at the front of the room. He kept talking, effectively getting everyone's attention. He had no speech prepared, had no idea if he was even supposed to give a speech tonight, but he could fake it, pull out one of the old standards.

Donavette had no idea she could turn into a cat until about a half hour ago, she certainly didn't know how to do it at will. She couldn't even focus enough to respond to him telepathically. She shook her head, still panicked.

Eli didn't want to pick up someone who wasn't Mia, but he wanted to get Donavette up to his office. He picked her up into a fireman's carry and walked toward the stairs, hoping Mia would follow. He was glad that the function had been held near his office, and he moved to take her there.

Mia was relieved that Lightman had taken over the 'cover' role. The man was kind of brilliant, in an 'absolutely crazy' sort of way. Mia nodded to Eli as he carried Donavette past. She wasn't nervous or jealous. He was trying to help the girl, and Mia trusted him. Besides, Mia had seen the way the cat-girl had reacted to her before. Mia's presence would not be beneficial.

Lightman was entertaining the crowd, and had just called on one of the audience members and was playfully grilling them.

Dona clung to Eli, eyes squeezed shut, her body trembling. Luckily nobody seemed to take notice of them as they circled the back of the room toward the stairs.
