Who: Open to anyone attending Homecoming.
What: Taunton Homecoming Dance
Warning: Explosions!

The gym had been decorated with streamers and banners. There was punch in the corner, and kids were dancing to songs that grownups had decided were popular. It looked just like a typical dance from any high school movie. The faculty must have done their research via Netflix.

It was Taunton's first Homecoming Dance. One of the women on the party planning committee was from America, and since Taunton had quite a few American students, they'd decided it would be a fun event. With the recent loss of the headmistress, they thought everyone could use something to cheer them up. They'd gone all-out, even holding elections for Homecoming King and Queen.

Sam had just "broken up" with Candy yesterday, but he'd told her he still wanted to take her to the dance, if she wanted to go. She was his best friend, and that wasn't going to change. Neither of them had another date, and he'd already bought the tickets, so they might as well go together.

Iggy had actually agreed with the counter-petition, that separating 'normal' kids from everyone else would make it harder to integrate everyone as adults, and that leaving the school as it was made sense.

Iggy smiled, just slightly, catching Hope's wrist, sliding his hand down to weave their fingers, voice just loud enough to be heard over the background rabble, "We don't have to stay."

"No, it's okay," Hope said, shaking her head and squeezing Iggy's hand. "We should stay." She leaned in to kiss his cheek. "It could be fun. Do you want to dance?" She tugged lightly at his hand. The song had changed to something a little slower.

"I don't really know how." Was his only objection, and it wasn't much of one all in all, "But, um, if you want to?" He was fairly certain that he hadn't meant for that to sound like a question, it was just the crowd and the noise making him jumpy.

"Neither do I," she admitted. "But, y'know. Any excuse to touch you," she said with a smirk. They could dance here on the outskirts of the crowd without having to be surrounded by people. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, brushing her fingers against his wing feathers.

He smiled at that, just slightly, brow creasing as he let her move him further into the noise. He wasn't tense, not really, just ready to spring if he had to, idly wishing that he'd thought to bring Angel along as a guide if they had to make a quick getaway, and quickly squashing that idea back down again.

She stopped before they were too close to the crowd. They were actually a fairly wide distance from the closest dancing couple. It looked a bit silly for them to dance there, but she didn't really care. She put her head on Iggy's shoulder and swayed to the music.

He was glad of that, really, that they weren't too close, he was still only getting a small, cramped picture of what the room looked like. He was glad that he already knew the size of it, though without knowing exactly where people, tables and decorations were, he might still be in trouble.

The half-panicked, 'zomg danger!' line of thought stopped short, however, when Hope put her head on his shoulder, he smiled, head resting against hers for the moment.

Hope relaxed, too, happy to be in Iggy's arms. She felt safe, and everything else seemed to melt away. She let her eyes close as the swayed to the slow song.

When the song ended, she opened her eyes and looked over Iggy's shoulder at her watch. She tensed. It was later than she thought. She spotted Sam walking up behind her, apparently on his way to the food table. "Hey, here's Sam!" she said with false cheer. She grabbed Sam and pulled him over, placing the boy's hand on Iggy's arm. "Could you bring me some punch, baby?" she asked, kissing him on the cheek. "I have to powder my nose."

There weren't many people Sam liked less than Hope, but he forced a smile when he was grabbed. "Hey, guys."

Iggy's brow furrowed as Hope tensed, he couldn't really rely on his usual senses, so he had to go with the rest of them, he'd been about to ask when she practically threw Sam at him, leaving him blinking in confusion, "Uh, sure?" Was his response to the question of punch.

The smile he turned on Sam was honest, if a little tight around the edges, "You'll, uh, have to show me where it is."

Sam gave Iggy a real smile. He was much more comfortable being asked by Iggy than being given an assignment by Hope. "Yeah, sure. Going there anyway."

He didn't hold Iggy's hand, or anything, but the crowd made them walk close enough that their shoulders touched. "So, having fun?" He was wondering again if he should say something to Iggy about Hope being psycho. He'd been debating it since yesterday when he found out.

"I guess so." He said, brow still furrowed, focus somewhere above the crowd, it was always harder for him when there was that much background noise, even just being in a city was enough to wash everything out, this much this close was somehow worse, "That's what this kind of thing is for, right?"

He kept his fingers against Sam's arm as they made their way through the crowd, ready to catch hold if there was a chance of them getting separated, leaving Iggy stranded in a sea of sound.

Sam smirked, chuckling a little. "Yeah, that's what they say," he said. Seemed like most of the guys here were uncomfortable, and even a lot of the girls looked really awkward, like they'd rather be doing something else.

It had been quite a while since Iggy's touch elicited that kind of electric shock. It sent a little shiver down Sam's back, which he hoped the other boy wouldn't notice. It was frustrating; when so many other kids were practically dry-humping on the dance floor, he couldn't act on his feelings. Couldn't even talk about it. Sam clenched his teeth a bit. He lifted his other hand to his shoulder, his fingers closing lightly over Iggy's. Because of the crowd. And all.

Just as they reached the food table, there was a loud explosion behind them, on the other side of the room. "What the fuck?" Sam's hand clamped down on Iggy's.

Iggy was almost airborne at that, he'd felt the shockwave before he actually heard the explosion, wings snapping out, likely buffeting anyone nearby in the process, folding them down again and dragging Sam to the floor, he knew they were near the table because the noise was all behind them, "Get under the table, stay under the table to the far end, the back door is right there, get outside."

Sam slid back toward the table, still holding onto Iggy's fingers. "Where are you going? What are you doing?" He held a lot of respect for Iggy's abilities, and was constantly impressed by what he could do even without sight, but with how loud and crazy the room had been before the explosion, Iggy could hardly tell what was going on. Now it just seemed more chaotic. Iggy couldn't play the hero now, could he?

Hope was just at the edge of the explosion radius. She was knocked forward by the force of the blast, but nothing hit her. She twisted her ankle, but that was nothing, really. When the debris stopped flying, she took to the air, swooping down and grabbing an injured kid to get him to safety.

"I'm coming with you." He said, having to yell to be heard over the noise, scrambling under the table after Sam, folding his wings down tight like he hadn't needed to do in ages, "Just need you to go first so I know where I'm going." It was a slim chance, and he'd probably still rely more on the wall to one side than he would to Sam, "And once we get to the doors we try and channel people out, that's the football field and the back parking lot, right?"

Sam was relieved. "Okay," he called, wrapping his hand around Iggy's wrist to make it easier to guide him. He crawled under the table toward the door. They were the first to make it to the door, and Sam stood up to shove it open. "Yeah, this is the field. Hey, no!" A girl-shaped diamond from outside pushed past Sam and into the room when he opened the door. She seemed to be on a rescue mission, and since she was all sparkly, Sam figured she knew what she was doing. "Okay, come on," Sam said to Iggy, leading him to the door.

"Hey, guys!" he yelled to the nearby panicked students. "Come this way!"

Iggy shoved a few dishes out of the way so he could clamber onto the end of the table, putting himself above the milling crowd, he cupped his hands around his mouth, hoping it was loud enough, "This way, back door's open, everybody outside!"

They probably could have waited for the adults to organize things, maybe they even should have, but Iggy was still used to fending for himself in an emergency.

Yeah, that probably got more attention. Sam stood, holding the door open and gesturing wildly to wave people outside. It was definitely working, with quite a number of people running past them and grouping up in the parking lot.

He frowned. "I don't see Candy," he yelled to Iggy. There was a lot of dust and smoke in the air, and he couldn't see much of anything. He'd been hoping Candy would run past him. Maybe she found another door.

Iggy was wheezing, mostly due to the fact that he was up in the smoke and dust, and he was yelling while up there, he did manage to catch what Sam said, swearing, not caring who heard just at the moment. He hopped down from the table to hold the door open himself, giving Sam a push, "Go find her."

Sam nodded, starting into the crowd. "Hey, Hope's okay," he called over his shoulder. Iggy would probably want to know that. "I can see her flying." It was hard to get past people, and there was a lot of crap in the air that made it hard to see and breathe. He thought he saw Jade's bright red hair, and headed towards it.

Jade and Naruto were helping Candy. She looked bad. Sam wasn't close enough to do anything, but he saw them getting her outside through the opposite wall. Sam followed, going over to where they'd laid her down. She was completely unconscious. Sam swore under his breath. He wished he knew first aid, but there really wasn't anything he could do. At least he could hear sirens, so he knew help was on it's way.

He left Jade and Naruto with Candy and went around the outside of the building to check on Iggy.

Iggy was still holding the door, ushering the last stragglers out, able to tell a little better what the place looked like now that it was empty, he found himself surprised that he was glad to hear sirens, mostly because just a few months ago he still would have gone to hide when he heard them, now it was a sound that caused a wash of relief.

He cupped his hands around his mouth once more, "Anybody still inside let's move it out, help's on the way."

"Hey," Sam called as he ran around the corner, back to Iggy. "Candy and Esk and them are on the other side," he said, a little out of breath. He glanced inside and didn't see anyone left. "Candy's.. She looks bad." He didn't know what he thought should be happening now. Should he go back to Candy? Should he bring Iggy with him? He'd been sick most of his life; he was used to other people taking care of him, not the other way around. He ran a hand through his hair, feeling helpless.

"Okay, it's okay, she'll be okay." He shook his head, moving towards the cooler outside air, "One of those sirens is an ambulance, two are fire." His brow furrowed, "Don't hear any police." Shaking his head he took a deep breath, coughing twice, "They're probably on the way too, others were probably closer."

Sam raised a brow. That was weird, but kind of cool. Sam just heard sirens. "We'll probably need more ambulances," he said, glancing around. There were three or four kids lying on the ground. Others were sitting up, but looked injured.

"I think everybody's out. I'm gonna go over to Candy. I think Hope's on that side, too." He glanced up at Iggy. "You want to come?"

"They'll radio for more." He said, not finding it odd at all that he knew how emergency services worked, even though he'd never needed them, "Those guys were just closest, so they'll get here first and assess the situation, call out for whatever else is needed."

He was talking mostly so that he wouldn't worry, nodding at Sam's question, "Yeah." He caught the other boy's shoulder, not as firmly as he'd been holding on inside, but still in need of guidance, there was still a lot of noise out here.
