Who: Laurie Juspeczyk and Eddie Blake
What: Coffee/"So. you're my dad"... good times.
Where: Coffee house
When: 2pm.
Warnings: Decaf coffee and awkwardness?

As much as Laurie was more inclined now than she was a few weeks ago to hope for a good meeting with Eddie, it didn't stop her nerves. As far as she could tell, there was no way to avoid awkwardness, and she'd given up trying to think of ways around it. Still, her mood was good as she wandered into the coffee shop about 10 minutes early, and a quick glance showed her she was the first one there.

Rather than wait, she gave her order to the barrista, and once it was collected made her way to a comfortable chair in the corner to wait.

He was going to be a fucking grandfather? Eddie Blake and Grandfather were just not ideas that went together in his head, and he had taken a while to try and hash it out before heading to the coffee shop. He would have been early, too, if not for that. But he was right on time, walking in, seeing Laurie and giving a nod and a slapped on smile as he walked back towards her, his order able to wait.

"Hey you. Long time, no see," He said as he approached, not sure how this was going to go and feeling damn annoyed with himself because of that. At least with Laurie's mother, he knew where he stood. On her last nerve.

Laurie still hadn't come to terms with the idea that she would have an actual real, live, change your life forever baby at the end of this whole pregnancy thing, so the idea that Eddie wasn't quite there yet wouldn't have surprised her much. It was generally something she didn't think about.

As Eddie entered and approached, she finally had to deal with something she'd been thinking about obsessively since he'd given her a time for coffee. The last time she saw him had been less than congenial, but it had been on different terms. He'd been the guy who tried to rape her mother, not the guy who fathered her. Where did it rank on the greeting scale? Hug seemed a bit weird, handshake seemed impersonal. Standing as he approached came off as formal, but not doing so seemed rude.

Opting to stand, she smiled at him. "Hi, Eddie. It has been along time. You look good."

Of all the things she could say, that caught him off guard and he scoffed a laugh, "Yeah, well, I'm alive, so I guess I look better than dead. You look good, too," He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do beyond nodding his greeting-handshake, hug, high five, what?-and just decided to motion for her to sit down, "Go on, sit down, I'm going to get a coffee," He pointed with his thumb over his shoulder before giving her a look and then heading to the counter. Oh yeah, not awkward at all. He frowned as his back turned to her and went to place his order.

Once that was done with, he came back to the table and sat down, "So. How are you feeling?" Eddie Blake, attempting to be civil, seemed like a dancing bear at the circus. Interesting to watch, but you weren't entirely sure if or when he was going to snap and tear your face off.

"Thanks..." She watched him head toward the counter, offering a silent sigh of relief as she took her seat again, gathering her cup in both hands as she took a sip of coffee.

"How am I feeling?" Why would he ask.. right. Pregnant. The momentary look of confusion passed and she offered a mild shrug. "I feel good. Great, really... other than the bit each morning where it feels like I've teleported somewhere, I wouldn't know anything was going on. And I have a built in excuse for afternoon naps if I want one. It's still kind of weird." She had no idea how much of the question had been genuine, but Laurie figured she didn't really have anything to lose by answering. For some reason, the idea that it was simply manners didn't even cross her mind. She was talking to Eddie, after all.

He seemed confused when she did, and then she answered and he sighed, sipping his coffee to cover it, "Right. And how does bird boy feel about it?" He asked as he sat back, getting comfortable in his seat and trying to get comfortable in the conversation.

"Dan? He's ecstatic. He's got the right books, wants to know everything I'm feeling, knows what's god and bad for the baby... no smoking, no drinking, no patrolling- we fought over that one - no excessive strenuous activity" Her wry grin was cushioned by her amused tone. "I wouldn't be surprised if he's retrofitting Archie with a nursery. He's taking the whole dad thing pretty seriously." Too late, the words were out before she realized how they might sound.

Eddie's chin raised a bit, and his nostrils gave a slight flare before his own wry smile appeared, more cynical than her's-he'd had it for longer, after all, if it ran in the family.

"Is he? Good for him. Good he has the chance," He said the words carefully, as if pointedly trying not to snap. As if he couldn't do all that, buy books and go sappy.

"I..."

She closed her eyes as she dropped her head forward to hide the cringe that flickered across her features. Taking a slow deep breath, she thought for a moment about she wanted to say, then lifted her head back to look at him.

"I didn't mean that the way it came out. It is good, and he'll be good at it. Caring, supporting, loving.. .all the things I missed out on from a dad." She held her hand out for a moment to stop any response he might have. "But that's not a reflection on you. It's a reflection on Larry, if anyone."

Eddie squared off his shoulders and nodded once. That was a fair point, he supposed. "Larry was never the compassionate type," He said simply.

She broke it down even more simply. "Larry was an asshole."

Leaning back in her seat, she chuckled lightly. "Is it supposed to be this awkward?

"I was expecting it to be worse, actually. I was pretty harsh the first time we talked. I'm not really sure what we're supposed to talk about." She smiled. "Although I'm not certain you're particularly interested in Dan's daddy potential, or whether or not I've got morning sickness."

"Yeah, you did."

And Laurie really wanted to ask why. She told herself it didn't matter, and in the long run it really didn't, but it still took quite a bit of willpower to not ask. At least she knew where she got her stubborn streak from.

"You think you'll prefer Pop, or Grampa?"

Eddie gave her a look, raising his eyebrow sardonically, "You ever call me 'Dad', Laurie?" He replied easily, though using her name was a bit weird. He usually stuck with the names of their masks, but here he was. Trying to play nice.

"Really? You don't find it odd at all. In that case, maybe I'll wait til see if I get that pony I want for Christmas, then I'll call you Daddy."

It was the part that kept tripping her up, the way it didn't seem to faze him either way. It had to, one way or the other - she just couldn't believe this was the sort of thing one got ambivalent about.

"For fuck's sake, Eddie... have an opinion on it."

Eddie looked away over the pony comment. This was really just bull shit, the whole thing. He wasn't picking up pieces he had dropped when it came to being a father. Laurie's mother hadn't wanted her to know. He did. He just didn't let the cat out of the bag for some reason-he'd not admit it was because he respected anyone's choice to shut him out.

He scoffed, "Listen," He sat up, leaning in a bit, "You had a shitty father, right? Larry was no fucking prize, right? And now, now you are looking to me to want to take up the mantel of fucking father of the year or to just push it aside, when all I can fucking think is fucking right he was a fucked up father, but that was the best choice for you, since who the fuck says I could be a dad? I kill people like nothing, kid, but raising a kid? You see me doing that? Better you found out now."

Now that - that was a reaction. She had wanted to know if he gave a shit at all or if he was just going through the motions for her sake, And that reaction at least offered a clue.

"Larry was shit, you could have been shit, you could have been puppies and ice cream. Who cares? I managed with Larry, I managed when he was gone, and I turned out fine. A decent mother does wonders. And it's all over. I'm not asking for Super dad, Eddie. Even if it's what we both wanted, there is no way on earth for us to ever have a normal father-daughter relationship. We're too fucked up for it, individually and together. What I want to know is if you've got any interest in actually knowing me, and maybe my kid."

A year ago, Eddie probably would have kept his distance. But that was before everything-before being killed, for one thing. Before finding out about everything. Crying in front of-well, it was before a lot. And he gave a nod, "Yeah, I want to know you. I mean, as fucked up as I am, I'm still interested in getting to know my kid. I'm just saying that it isn't going to be normal. Who the fuck wants normal anyway?" He wanted a smoke just then and took a sip of his coffee.

"Good." Laurie offered a warm smile - she hadn't realized how much she'd expected him to answer the other way. Logically, she'd like to think that it wouldn't have mattered, which ever way he answered, but there was a part of her that had dreaded rejection from him.

She shifted to stand, leaning over the table to press the lightest of kisses against his forehead, dropping right back into her seat with a light smirk. "Not me. I wouldn't know what to do with normal if it bit me. So we can skip a lot of the random shit, right?"

He couldn't help the smile that pulled back his lips over that kiss. Simple and effective, he felt relieved. He had wanted to say something to her about all of this before, and now it was out there and it was...well, it seemed okay.

"Right," He nodded, still smiling, "Like fucking father's day. Don't even."

"You don't want a nice tie? Maybe a handmade ashtray? A Hallmark card, because I care to send the very best?" She shook her head with a grin, visibly more relaxed than she had been.

"I skipped Mother's day, so it's only fair. They just don't have cards for parents that are younger than you. But there's some fun stuff you get to do, if you feel like it. Such as giving Dan a hard time when he gets around to proposing." The idea made her chuckle... she knew Dan was nervous already.

"An ashtray, maybe," He grinned, "Fucking lopsided and with one of those cheesy hand prints in the middle, yeah?" He was happy to be joking around with Laurie. It felt right.

"No shit I'll be doing that. Fuck, if he gets the balls, let's see him face the father of the bride, is all I'm saying."

"You think my hand print would be cheesy? It's supposed to bring a tear of joy to your face each time you use it! Forget it... You just earned yourself a picture frame made from popsicle sticks and macaroni, mister."

Tipping her cup back, she finished off the rest of her coffee and placed the empty on the table, offering him a hopeful look. "I don't suppose you're going to smoke as soon as you get outside?"

"I'll get you crayons. You can draw your own damn picture." Laughing, she stood, nodding towards the door. "Good. I'll walk with you. I just want to smell it..." She'd given up smoking a while ago, even before the whole baby thing, but damn if she didn't miss it sometimes.

"And yet, I'm ok with that." She wasn't in any real hurry to leave, but coffee houses that didn't smell like smoke were still a strange thing to her - coffee and cigarettes just went together.

As he lit the cigar she inhaled slowly, smiling as the scent of tobacco reached her. "I keep forgetting about the smoking ban. Apparently, they can kill you."

"Don't you know? Their fellow man in civilized, and would never do such a thing." She shrugged, offering a wry smile - she couldn't blame people, really, for thinking the best of their fellow man - she knew what people were capable of, and she was still shocked at some of the atrocities she'd seen. "Do they ever try kicking you out?" The mental issue of some college kid telling him he had to put of his cigar amused her.
