Bella Donna Boudreaux loves cooking and murder ([info]poisonwine) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Entry tags:aramis, belladonna boudreaux

Who: Aramis and Belle
What: Sword purchasing and practice
Where: Cardiff
Rating: my guess is that it will be low.

Belle stood outside the shop, smoking a cigarette, her hands shoved deep inside her pockets. It was colder than she was used to, and it made her grumpy. But at least she would be getting in some proper swordplay today, and with a handsome Frenchman, no less.

Not that she had interest in flirting at the moment, but she could always enjoy the view.

"Merci," she said, with an accent that wasn't French but wasn't American. "It's in America. Southeastern bit. Part of the Louisiana Purchase."

Which hadn't been made yet, in his time.

The shop was, indeed, very warm. There was an old man behind the counter, and behind the old man there were several weapons, all of the bladed type. Belle had bought a set of throwing knives here, and approved of the quality. "Bonjour!" She chirped to the man.

"The what Purchase? Louisiana...huh." He scowled a little, obviously a bit confused as he followed her into the shop, whistling as he glanced about. "Goodness...you weren't kidding." Glancing at the old man behind the counter, he nodded to back up Belle's 'Bonjour'.

"I've never seen so many swords in such a nice shop..." Usually you had to buy them from a metal worker whom you'd see slaving over a hot fire to form the perfect blade. Nothing like this shop had existed in his time and he was impressed.

"I'll tell y' later." Belle said with a slight laugh.

The man behind the counter looked up from his book and smiled at the pair. "Good morning. What can I help you with?"

"Alright." He nodded at Belle, interested to learn more about this 'Louisiana Purchase' she was talking about. Humming a little he glanced around the shop. "I'm looking for a good, sturdy rapier..." Aramis explained, spotting a few behind the counter which he studied. "Something that is light, but gets the job done..."

The man nodded and looked back at the wall. He wandered over to one of the swords, and took it off the rack, carrying it respectfully to the counter. "Think this might suit you."

Belle eyed the sword, and then turned to the shopkeeper. "Got anything like that, but with a smaller handle?" She held up her right hand. "Don't think I could hold onto one like that very well."

Stepping back a bit with the sword, Aramis hummed thoughtfully as he tested the weight in his hands. It was nice and felt quite a bit like his old sword, surprisingly. With a slow swish of the sword, he closed his eyes and began simply working with it, getting a feel for the weapon.

Both Belle and the shopkeeper watched. Belle whistled appreciatively, and the man chuckled. "I think I have one that will work for you, miss."

He figured the first one was as good as sold.

After a few minutes, Aramis seemed pleased with his choice and opened his eyes, glancing over at the shopkeeper. "I'll take it." He set it on the counter, waiting for it to be rung up and the sheath to be provided.

The man rang it up quickly, sheathing it before handing it back to Aramis. In the meantime, Belle tested out a different sword, getting used to the weight of it. It was heavier than she was used to, but other than that, it was a good weapon.

She paid quickly, smiling happily.

Attaching the sheath to his belt, Aramis felt complete for the first time since he'd arrived there. Outside of the bedroom, that is. When he was with Athos he always felt complete...but this was a different idea entirely. "Fantastic." Stroking his fingers over the hilt of the blade, he looked to Belle. "If you'd like, we could retire to my place to spar. I live on a vineyard and there is a lot of space for sparring and the likes."

She nodded, her own sword quickly finding its way to her belt as well.

"Sounds good. I've only got a tiny apartment, and no room there to speak of."

Beside, it was France. She loved France.

Her hand touched the sword's handle gently, and she smiled. No way she was letting this one get taken away from her. She'd felt way too exposed without her weaponry.

"Well then, lets be off." Chuckling, he offered up his arm for her to hold. It's how gentlemen used to walk with women, anyway, and he thought it only appropriate.

She wrapped her hand delicately around his arm, and nodded. "Sounds like a plan."

It was very cold, still, so she didn't mind the excuse to be closer to her companion than was normally thought polite. "So you're originally from France, then?"

"I am. Born and raised." He led them out of the shop and in the direction of the portkey that would take them back to his place. "I was a musketeer, I'll have you know. I'm retired now, of course, but still. Those were the days. Roaming about, protecting the king, getting the ladies to swoon." Chuckling, Aramis seemed fond of his past.

Belle's jaw dropped in shock. "A musketeer? Dieu, no wonder you don't know about the Louisiana Purchase. How much modern history have y' absorbed?"

"Well..." He seemed slightly flustered. "What do you consider 'modern'?" Aramis asked a bit sheepishly. Real translation: Absolutely nothing. "I mean, I know those...things," he motioned to a car, "are called automobiles..."

She nodded. "I can catch y' up, if you like. I'm still getting used to some things, but I know my history really well, for both France and America, though American History can wait until you've got a handle on the French bit."

"Sounds good to me. I'm afraid Athos becomes frustrated too quickly when he tries to explain things to me. I just honestly can't believe the majority of what has happened..." Sighing, he scowled after a moment. "He mentioned something about world wars..."

Belle nodded. "There were two. I sincerely hope it doesn't happen again. I suppose you already know the monarchy fell in France. Which king did y' serve?"

The portkey transported them to France after she asked the question.

After shaking off the strange feel of the portkey, he decided to answer her question. "King Louis the Thirteenth and then his son, King Louis the Fourteenth personally." Aramis replied as he led his companion in the direction of his lover's vineyard.

"Was King Louis the Sixteenth that ruined it permanently. Funnily enough, he was brought down mostly because of the help he gave t' America when the colonies were fightin' for their independence. Not that his father helped much. Got involved in any war he could, nearly bankrupt the country."

"Oh my." He murmured, frowning a bit. "Now these colonies, they are now America?" Aramis asked, seeming thoughtful. "And what other new countries have been formed?"

"Oui. Um, let's see. . . Europe's done some shiftin' around, so most of the countries are different sizes and in different places. In fact, that can be said for a lot things."

She shrugged. "But as for brand new ones. . .none that I can think of. France sold it's largest colony, but retained most of the others, from what I can recall."

Nodding, he led her up the path toward the house. "Could I interest you in a glass of wine? Or perhaps I should wait until after our sparring lesson." Pausing, he grinned faintly. "A warning, if you see a dirty blonde wandering about brooding, it's probably best to just smile and nod at him."

"Tryin' t' dull my wits, huh?" She asked with a grin. "No thank you, I've given it up f'r Lent."

The last bit makes her giggle as well. "I'll keep that in mind."
