Entry tags:m-day 2: genetic boogaloo, madame de pompadour, tenth doctor (human)

WHO: Reinette and the Human!Doctor.
WHERE: Huis ten Bosch Palace.
WHEN: After this.
RATING/WARNINGS: TBD. None yet.
STATUS: In progress.

Reinette had closed herself up in her rooms, trying to keep away from everyone else as much as possible. It wasn't so much painful as it was overwhelming, though negative emotions were painful to her, being so aware of the emotions of others. She could still feel everyone in that part of the palace, but it was muted with the distance. She didn't feel up to being around people right then, and she couldn't imagine living with these feelings in her head for the rest of her life. It was too much, and left her feeling as if her own emotions were becoming lost in a wave of other people's feelings. She needed to gain control of this, but she was frightened of working on it, worried that she would fail and lose herself. She truly could not fathom how her Doctor could stand to have this in his head constantly. It was all too awful.

She sat in a chair by the window staring absently out at the gardens. A knock to the door startled her and she jumped slightly. "Come in," she called wearily."

It hadn't taken the Doctor long to get there. When he heard her weary voice speak after he knocked, he poked his head in before stepping inside. He frowned as he saw how tired she obviously looked. He slid his hands into the pocket of his jeans.

"That bad?" he asked.

"Yes," Reinette admitted, giving the Doctor a small smile. "It was worse at first, but I fear it has only improved because there are not so many people around. It is just...so much. The things they feel...their pain. A person is not meant to feel " She stood up, walking over to him and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"I do find myself comforted by your presence, however," she told him, and it was true. Somehow, his emotions didn't seem to add to the weight she felt. If anything, he made her forget about it, however briefly.

He offered her a wan smile before reaching up to brush the back of his fingers against her cheek.

"I am sorry you are having to feel all of that," he said, his voice but a whisper. He stepped closer and kissed the top of her head.

"Come. I'll see how I can help."

Reinette couldn't help but lean into the touch briefly. It was as if, when he touched her, all she felt was him. The rest of it faded away, and she could focus on just him.

"Do not apologise, Doctor," she said, closing her eyes and smiling softly as he kissed her head. "It is hardly your fault. And, in some way, I feel as though I can understand you better now. To have felt this for so long...you are truly an extraordinary man." She looked up with determination. "I will learn to manage this. There is no other alternative."

She took his hand in hers for a moment. "Thank you, my Doctor," she said.

He led her to a seat, easing her down into it and knelt beside her. He reached his hand up again and brushed her cheek before both hands cupped her face. They had done this once before, when he had scanned her mind to determine why the clockwork creatures were so fascinated with her. Only this time, he used his abilities to help her sort out her emotions from those around her.

She let him lead her to one of the chairs and sat down, suppressing a smile as his hands cupped her face in an action that reminded her of that time before, when they had seen into each other's minds. She relaxed and opened her mind to him, startled slightly by the ease with which the cacophony of emotion faded away, at least for the moment, and she was left with only two sets of emotions to focus on. Her own and his.
