who. Sophie Cuckoo and Rose Frost
what. A much needed talk. Possible bitchery.
when. Tonight
where. Casa de Frost

A very sensitive nose was to thank for Rose's foul mood. She'd woken early for breakfast in the morning and bumped into one of the Stepfords as she was on her way to the shower. There'd been a smell on the girl, who Rose had found out a bit later was Esme. It was a smell that shouldn't have been on her skin. James' scent. And that meant... well... Rose didn't want to think about what it meant. Rose couldn't really see past Rachel and how badly she'd react to the news of James being with someone else. So she'd sat at the breakfast table, trying to keep herself from growling at the little blond androids that had sat across from her. It'd been fortunate that Rose had left for school before James. She wasn't sure she could have kept her claws in around him.

She'd done a good job of avoiding them since. In fact, Rose had tried her hand at avoiding everyone she lived with. If she bumped into James, she'd certainly tell him how angry she was (and possibly fight with him). Same with the Stepfords. And if she saw Rachel, she'd project guilty thoughts about the information she'd learned. If she spoke with her parents, she'd plead with them to kick the Cuckoos out. And none of that interaction would end well.

So Rose locked herself away in her room, a book for school in one hand and a green highlighter in the other (she'd been gravitating toward green things lately, though she hadn't consciously noticed her doing so). There were earbuds in her ears and her iPod sat beside her on the bed. Rose was on her stomach, feet up in the air. She hummed a tune quietly as she read and tried to drown the world out. Still, the raincloud hung over her head. Stupid Cuckoos. Stupid, stupid James.

There was a knock and though it registered in Rose's mind, she didn't get up. She looked at the door for a moment and then decided that she didn't want to speak with whoever was outside. They'd have to be a little persistent before Rose would let them in.

Sophie nodded. "All right." She was confident she could do that. If it was a topic she was unfamiliar with, she might have to do more searching and inadvertently come into contact with other parts of Rose's mind that she didn't want to.. But she would easily be able to hone onto the wavelength of the five-in-one.

She was surprised by what she found. The girls were all in their twenties, and had lives of their own. They were in relationships.. Phoebe was married to Terrance Cassidy and lived in Ireland. Esme lived in New York and had an on-again-off-again sexual relationship with Alex Summers that had started when she was a senior in his class at the Institute. Celeste was seriously involved with Julian Keller and Mindee lived with her partner, Monet, and worked at X-Factor with her. Sophie wasn't seriously dating anyone, but Josh Foley had asked her out a few times.

She wanted to go back further. She wanted to see how they had split.. How badly it had hurt, and if it had been Sophie's fault. But there wasn't anything there. Rose hadn't known them well enough when they split. She could sense a vague memory in Rose's mind of the five being together, but details were not there.

She backed out of Rose's mind. "Thank you," she said softly, mulling all of this over. She wasn't sure Rose realized how much this meant.

"How did your parents meet?" she asked, her tone neutral. The five had been curious of the strange pairing.

"Mmm." She wouldn't be gracious if she could help it. Rose wasn't going to be nice if she could help it. The question about her parents was enough to raise a brow. Just as it was strange to the Cuckoos that Emma and Logan were together, it was strange to Rose that Emma and Logan wouldn't be together.

"It was after Mr. Summers and Ms. Grey were..." She looked down. "They died. And my parents had to take over. They're always vague about the details, but it was a bad time, I think. That's what it seems from how they talked about it." Rose exhaled. "They knew one another before then, but they hadn't really been able to get close until then." A pause. "Why?"

Sophie listened, nodding. It made sense. She imagined that would have been a difficult time for both of them. The girls knew how Ms. Frost thought about Mr. Summers, and the whole world knew about Mr. Logan and Ms. Grey.

"They weren't together in our world," she said. "We would have thought them to be such an unlikely couple, but.. They work rather well together." She smiled a little. They were cuter than the girls had expected. Sophie believed that Rose probably had something to do with how well Emma and Logan worked together. The Cuckoos didn't understand the relationship. Esme had attempted to gain insight through her night with James, but Sophie thought she was discovering more here, through talking to Rose.

"I know," Rose said. And for the first time throughout the entire conversation she sounded normal. The anger was gone because she could focus on something beyond Esme and James. "They weren't together here. They... they are my parents, but not. Different." She looked down. Rose missed home. "They were in charge back home. They were very happy."

Sophie nodded. She understood that feeling of nostalgia and doubt, all too well. "They seem very happy here," she said, with a small smile. "Ms. Frost seems happier than she was in our world." She paused, thinking on the next statement, having just decided on it. "We.. I think Mr. Logan is good for her."

"I hope I'm that lucky."

And with one simple statement, Sophie had begun to win Rose over. Inhaling quietly, Rose simply nodded. After a long minute, she looked at Sophie curiously. "You really like him." It was a statement, not a question.

Sophie nodded. "Yes... I do. I'm terrified, I do." She wound a lock of blonde hair around her finger in a twitchy, anxious motion. "We.. I.. It would be my fault if we break. We don't even know how.. It feels like we're dying. You showed me it's possible, but.. It feels like jumping off the edge of a cliff and not knowing what's at the bottom."

Rose cocked her head to the side and watched Sophie as though she were something very interesting. "I don't understand." She frowned lightly. "I like being alone." Shrugging lightly, Rose moved closer to her bed and sat at the edge. She wasn't too close to Sophie, but she wasn't too far away, either. "I don't think having some distance means you'll break anything. It'll make you..." she searched for a word that didn't sound too harsh and couldn't find one, "more normal."

Sophie looked up at her. "Ripping out your claws would make you more normal, but you wouldn't be happy. You'd hate the person who did it." She didn't say it with venom or malice directed toward Rose. Her tone was neutral and quiet. Rose's statement didn't anger her, it just didn't make sense.

The girls would hate Sophie for tearing them apart. She could feel some of the worry and anger brewing already.

"I'm sorry," she said softly. She probably shouldn't have referenced Rose. "It's just who we are.. Who we've always been."

"Just because you have some individuality doesn't mean you're going to break." Rose wouldn't be able to understand. She felt bad for Sophie, in spite of her best efforts not to do so. But she didn't really get this. And she was, not for the first time in her life, glad she wasn't a telepath.

"They can't be upset with you for liking a boy." Rose crossed her arms over her chest. "That's stupid. Do you expect to all be celibate all of your lives? Or would they rather you wait for five brothers to fall into your lap?"

Sophie nodded a little. She knew that what Rose was saying made logical sense. She had seen Rose's world, and knew that the world wouldn't end if the Cuckoos broke up. And she knew it was ridiculous to think the five-in-one would never have boyfriends. And while they wouldn't have a problem finding a guy that would enjoy having the five-in-one share him, Sophie had a feeling that wouldn't work out in the long run. Not now that she had seen what it was like being loved by Quentin.

"We.. We'll break. But.. it won't be the end of the world. It just feels like it." She took a deep breath.

"There's a difference between having some distance and being broken," Rose said, still a little stubborn. She stopped before she went off on a tirade. Sophie didn't really need it. Rose brought her legs up and rested her chin on her knees. "You'll be fine," she said softly.

Sophie almost started to argue. There wasn't a difference, not for the Cuckoos. They were the five-in-one or they weren't. But they would recover. She nodded some at Rose's last statement. "Thank you," she said quietly, giving her a small smile. "And thank you for letting me in." It was good to know if things got worse with the Cuckoos, Rose was there. Maybe they could be friends.

Rose shrugged lightly because she didn't want to be gracious and say, "you're welcome." She wasn't so sure about friendship. The Cuckoos were such that Rose wasn't sure Sophie wouldn't go back to defending Esme when they weren't upset with her.

"Tell your sister to stay out of my way." She didn't say it with much anger. Rose sounded tired. "And to leave James alone," she added.

Sophie frowned a little. That would be hard. "I... I will. But.. It may take time before I can." The Cuckoos had to sort out their own problems first. If they split, it would be easier. They might already be splitting, really.

"I will," she said, more definitively. She would at least deliver some mental admonishment at Esme. It was important. What Esme did wasn't right, and Sophie very much wanted things in this family to be all right. "It won't happen again."

"Good," Rose said with a little sigh. Really, there was a large part of her that wanted Esme to approach her and say something stupid. She liked a good fight. Though, really, Rachel had more reason and right to tear Esme to pieces.

Sophie nodded. She stood up. She felt like thanking Rose again, but figured that would be too much. She started toward the door, then turned back again to face Rose. "Rose.. We know you don't want to go out sightseeing with us like we talked about, but... Maybe just the two of us could go out, sometime? After..." After the split. Sophie looked back at her, hopefully.

Whether she admitted it to herself or not, Rose didn't completely despise Sophie. She watched Sophie go quietly, eyes on the floor. It would be weird to hate one sister, be apathetic to three, and actually enjoy one. But it was possible. "I wouldn't mind," Rose said in a lofty tone with a light shrug.

She reached for the book she'd put aside when Sophie had first knocked. "Good luck with everything," she said.

Sophie smiled and nodded, turning back to the door. She felt much better about everything, now. She gave a little wave before leaving the room. She would be strong. Maybe it would be better for them to split, in the long run.

"Thanks. Talk to you later."
