Entry tags:madame de pompadour, tenth doctor (human)

WHO: Reinette and the Human!Doctor.
WHERE: Huis ten Bosch Palace.
WHEN: Early evening.
RATING/WARNINGS: TBD. None yet.
STATUS: In progress.

Reinette stood by the window, looking out at the area around the palace. It really was lovely, though she did miss Versailles quite a bit. She had dearly loved her home. Still, she was certain she could become accustomed to this. She was nothing if not adaptable, and the presence of her Doctor, even though she had yet to see him in person, was a comfort. She did hope that he would be true to his word and come to see her soon. She had missed him, though it had not been long since she had last seen him, and she was worried.

What could have happened that he had become so bitter? That was what troubled her, more than his sudden mortality. In all truth, his humanity was hardly something she saw as a negative. He was, in almost all respects, the angel she had loved for so many years...since she was a child if she was honest. But he could grow old with her, if he chose, and the thought warmed her heart. Of course she missed her king, she was hardly heartless or fickle, but it was as she had told Louis. The Doctor was the only man, aside from him, that she had ever loved.

"Majesty," a voice said, and she turned to see one of the staff there, "you have a visitor." She turned away to hide a small, hopeful smile. Perhaps it was him. She could only hope that it was. "Very well," she said with a nod, "send them in."

Reinette couldn't help but notice the smile seemed somewhat less genuine than usual, and she wondered again what had happened to change him. She hated that something had hurt her Doctor so terribly.

"You are," she said. "Amazing stories that are at once completely unbelievable and yet so undeniably true. But this isn't a story about distant stars or great battles. This is a story about one man's heart and the pain he's suffered." She gestured to two chairs and gave him another smile. "Sit and tell me what has happened since we last saw one another. I feel much more has happened for you than for me."

He was reluctant to relive his pain, but he didn't want to hide from her. He moved to the seat and sat.

"I am a clone of who you knew," he started. "Destined to live a single life with a single heart. I intended to live that life with Rose... I did... do love her. Then I found myself here."

He took a breath. "We became engaged, but it would appear she disappeared and came back with no memories of our engagement or her original time here. Recently she... broke my heart."

Reinette sat across from him and listened silently, though she wanted nothing more than to move over to him and hold him. She didn't, worried that he wouldn't accept it.

"You may be a clone," she said, "but you're the same man inside. Mortal, yes, but the same in all the ways that count. If Rose cannot see that...then I truly pity her." It surprised her after the conversation she'd had with the girl, where they had agreed that the Doctor was worth the monsters and the danger. She knew it was unfair to judge the girl without hearing her side of things, but she couldn't help thinking that Rose was very much a child.

"I do not know how welcome this sentiment might be," she said, "but I am truly sorry that you have suffered such pain. It is something I wish you had never experienced. And if you need anything, you can come to me. You have done so much for me, Doctor, and I can only hope to one day be able to repay you."
