Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:chelis hargrove, jack twist

Who: Jack and Chel
Where: Wherever he said to meet him, course.
When: Ah some time this evening.
Warnings: Underage drinking (Jack doesn't know either so shhh. She turns 21 in a couple weeks!), probably swearing.

After indeed changing into some warmer clothing and leaving her Dad a note that she would be back some time probably the next day (no sense in drinking and hurrying back, ow, the agony) Chel hopped a portkey to end up about a block away from the address Jack had given her. She hurried down the street and opened the door, shoving the paper she had scribbled it on into her pocket as she glanced around. Her initial thought was to find a guy in a cowboy hat, she soon found she'd have to pick him out of a crowd. She didn't mind terribly tho, and she soon recognized his features, walking over with a friendly smile and a light skip in her step. "It's nice to finally meet you in person, Jack Twist." No sense in some lame and somewhat whitty little line to start off with.

"Ah, right, Ennis." She said his name with the southern accent because it sound lame to say Dennis without the D. "Busy boy, so serious. We need to loosen him up a bit." She said with a nod, completely innocent to why that would not be a good idea in the least.

She waited for him to mount and followed him off, keeping the trot despite her blood burning to just race off across all that free space.

"That might not be a good idea, Chel," He tried to hide the wince at her words, instead focusing on her posture, and the way Sara seemed to be trying to get ahead of herself.

"M'sorry, m'I borin' you? Y'coulda jus' said so," Giving her a friendly wink, he kicked his horse into gear, starting off ahead of her at a full gallop, hearing the off-beats of Sara taking off to try and keep up.

Anything for a distraction.

Boy, did he have some major blowing off skills. Oh, bad wording, don't grin, no, no, no. She calmed her face no sooner than he'd taken off and she laughed, digging her heels into Sara and 'hup'ing her into a gallop to chase him down, coming up along his rear side.

"Oh it's on, Jack Twist!" She urged the horse to go a little faster, trying to get ahead of him, bold for someone as inexperienced in it as she.

Jack was able to physically turn himself around to face her, riding side saddle with little issue. "Looks t'me like you'd be bitin' off more'an you can chew, Chel..." He was sure he could leave her in the dust, and Maddox seemed to have his own plan on that, seeing Sara approach him from behind and finding another gear, makingi the distance between the horses grow.

She almost fell off the horse at that, surprised. Gatlin had said the very same thing to her just hours before. And there was nothing like a challenge to her. She pushed Sara to gallop harder, closing most of the space between them. If she couldn't beat him, she at least wanted to be equal on her first horse ride.

Sara, however, wasn't looking to race, and was growing tired of being ordered by someone who clearly wasn't her master, so she gave a defiant kick-up, standing briefly on her hind legs, stopped completely. The shock of the sudden stop and being throwing backwards caused Chel to yell out, holding on for dear life. Seeing she still wasn't rid of the pest on her back, Sara took back off towards the direction Maddox had taken Jack in, Chel hanging on to her, her legs dangling over the side, sometimes dragging on the rough ground below.

Chel's grip was going fast, hands sweaty with fear, but she figured letting go like this would be safer now than when she was on the horse's back, so she released her, hitting the ground, her ankle twisting below her body, causing her to yell out yet again.

Turning again as he heard Sara's whinny, Jack let out a quick curse, turning Maddox on his heel and heading back. He stopped the horse a short distance from Chel and slid off as quick as he could, kneeling down next to her.

"Damnit, Chel, I'm sorry," He frowned down at her, reaching out to carefully inspect her ankle. "Can you move it?"

Chelis laughed softly, painfully at that. "Oddly enough, it's fine. Animals can't be predicted, ya know?" She gave her foot a wiggle and winced, biting back a swear word. "It um, yeah I can. It just hurts, like a bitch."

"S'just sprained, then. C'mon, lemme help y'up." Sara trotted back over to the pair of them whiffling as she huffed for breath.

"Picky bitch. Don't know what got inna her," Jack stood and swatted Sara's neck, grabbing her reins and pulling on them to hold her completely still. His other hand was extended to help Chel up, hoping it'd be enough. "I can walk 'em back, if you'd rather me keep'er from spookin' again.

"It's ok, really." She said, finding her balance off that foot once she was stood up. "I wont hold it against her." She nodded at the next bit, brushing some hair out of her face. "Yeah, maybe that's best. I um, I'll just. . " She experimentally stepped lightly with her injured foot, winced a little. "I think I can limp it, as long as I'm careful."

Jack gave her a look, watching the way she kept her wait off of it. "M'not likin' that idea, beggin' pardon. How 'bout I help y'back on Sarah, an' we'll see if she don't get more used to you with my imput." He wrapped an arm around her neck affectionately, with the added benefit of making sure she would stay on the ground.

She hesitently looked at the horse but nodded. "That would be fine, yeah." She slowly limped over, wary of the swollen joint. Letting him help her up onto the horse she gripped the front of the saddle tightly, nodding that it was ok to get moving.

Sara whickered, but Jack held her still until Chel was settled, then led the mare by her reins over to grab up Maddox, who had taken to just munching grass idly until told otherwise. "An' o'course you decide t'be the lazy ass t'day. Go figure." Jack grabbed at his reins and pulled them on, walking back down the path toward the barn.

Chel giggled softly at that, shaking her head. "Hey, we all have our lazy days, and they are rarely convenient for anyone else." She looked around, remembering Ennis again. She found it awfully convenient, that he wasn't there the day Jack would invite her over. "He'd be pissed, wouldn't he? If he saw me here."

Jack turned to look at her, at the question, before quickly turning back to watch the path, hands tangling themselves in the strips of leather, a nervous tick.

"S'nothin' on you, Chel. He jus' ain't a social man." He didn't like sharing his things- the phrase almost passed Jack's lips, but he bit it back, not quite ready to phrase himself as 'his' to anyone, just yet.

"Well that's a given, he doesn't know me." She settled back a bit, deciding she could read enough from what he was saying to get a good idea. It seemed like the walk back to the barn would be endless but sure enough, it came into view just a few brief minutes later.

"M'sorry," He muttered after a few minutes of uneasy silence. "'Don't mean t'be rude, s'jus'... complicated," The last word came out with a huff of breath, as his shoulders slumped.

"Jack, you don't have any reason to be sorry. I'm not. .Boy, we need to work on that esteem of yourn." She shook her head a little, smiling softly. "Really it's fine, I was just saying, it can't be me as we ahven't met."

He gave her an odd look, at the first part. "S'nothin' t'do with m'ego, that's jus' fine. Ask around," He had a dry grin on his face, as he went on, "S'jus' habit. In m'time, y'not polite t'a lady, y'get taught a right-hard lesson, till y'are.

"As f'Ennis, he jus'.. he ain't fond'a people on'is land. Been tryin' t'get him t'remember, s'my land too. S'just an ornery sunuvabitch," His tone betrayed his fondness, even if he wasn't looking at her, for her to see the smile.

She laughed softly at that, despite the pain she was in. She nodded. "Well if you're not polite to the girls at work, and by you I mean men, you very well could get shot so, yay for extreme punishment. . ism. ."

She made a face and laughed again. Listened to him talk about Ennis and grinned. "Awwwww!" Her voice was soft, purposely juvenile to sound sweet and cute. "He's an ornery son of a bitch and you liiike him."

Jack stopped abruptly at that, turning on his heel to glare at her, a 180 from his previous disposition.

"I'm no faggot, miss, an' it ain't kind t'say as much."

"Faggot? Man, are you outdated. Unless you plan to put on a white hood and burn a cross, you shouldwatch using that word now a days, partner. You're liable to get shot." Crossing her arms she returned the glare. She was a tough one to crack and this wasn't going to be any different. "You think you're so secretive and shit? You forget that, again, homosexuality is embraced noeaways. Gay men get married, and they aren't hard to point out. Big macho ranchers sharing livestock together on a ranch? Somewhat obvious. Grinning and talking about someone like you're on cloud nine? Pretty damn obvious."

"I know what happens t'biggots miss, same as I know what happens t'queers. An' I ain't neither." He gave a tug to the horses' reins, getting them going again, trying away from the conversation without leaving her stranded on the side of the mountain.

After a long minute of silence, he half-turned to face her, a dark look on his face. "I ain't gettin' him or me killed just 'cause we're.. we're not..." He shook his head, falling silent.

She was silent, but not giving at that first bit. So she sat there, arms crossed until he said something.

"Jack, you aren't going to get killed, neither of you. People rarely ever kill gay people just 'cause they're gay nowadays. And if you like girls and boys, you're not even gay on technicality."

She sighed. "You can deny it all your life, even you won't believe it."

Jack sighed, seeing the truth in her words, but not wanting to admit it. Something still felt off, even if he didn't know what.

"I've loved the sunuvabitch for years, through both'a us gettin' married, him havin' kids, gettin' divorced... ain't once actually believed in no damn happy ending. It ain't somethin' jus' gonna change, wakin' up one day. I dunno what to do, but he ain' gonna do nothin' bout it. S'why bother hopin'?"

"Why bother hoping?" She shrugged. "Well I mean, hope's what makes life tolerable, Jack. None of us have 'good lives'. That just doesn't exist. I'm 20 years old, my life sucks, but I have hope that at one point? It'll get better. I got a buddy who's lost all use of his right hand, he still has some hope. It's why we're still here, it's why we keep trying. I mean, if you just quit, you may as well lay down and let whatever come just. . .come. You know?"
