Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:chelis hargrove, jack twist

Who: Jack and Chel
Where: Wherever he said to meet him, course.
When: Ah some time this evening.
Warnings: Underage drinking (Jack doesn't know either so shhh. She turns 21 in a couple weeks!), probably swearing.

After indeed changing into some warmer clothing and leaving her Dad a note that she would be back some time probably the next day (no sense in drinking and hurrying back, ow, the agony) Chel hopped a portkey to end up about a block away from the address Jack had given her. She hurried down the street and opened the door, shoving the paper she had scribbled it on into her pocket as she glanced around. Her initial thought was to find a guy in a cowboy hat, she soon found she'd have to pick him out of a crowd. She didn't mind terribly tho, and she soon recognized his features, walking over with a friendly smile and a light skip in her step. "It's nice to finally meet you in person, Jack Twist." No sense in some lame and somewhat whitty little line to start off with.

Hearing his name, Jack turned to Chel with a grin, standing and removing his hat with a little bow, "Pleasure, miss. S'this alright, or y'expectin' somethin' more upscale? There's a restaurant up the road, f'that's more your speed."

"Oh Jack," She chuckled a little, waving for him to sit down before joining him. "My speed is sleazy strip clubs and alleys, this place is nice compared to what I'm used to. Don't worry about me, I'm happy no matter where I am." Or pretending to be if she wasn't, but she really didn't mind. She unshelled a peanut and ate it, glancing around with a smile. "It'll do just fine. Now if you were taking me out and expecting something, well, then we might have something to talk about, but I like it well enough. . .I'm rambling, sorry! I ramble a lot when I meet people for the first time."

Jack dropped his hat back on his head before sitting down, taking a drink from his beer as he listened to her talk. He balked just slightly, at her mention of strip clubs- not thinking them any place for a lady ike her- but then, he was from the past, and she couldn't be as young as she looked. So, he just nodded a little as she finished up, before realizing what exactly she'd said, and shaking his head a little bit.

"Oh, no, miss. 'Not expectin' anything but t'be able t'buy a lady a drink, an' have a talk. M'not like that, miss, don't you worry. Speakin' of, y'want somethin'?" He gave the bartender a glance and nodded at him, to get him to come over. "Take care'a th'lady, on m'tab."

She laughed a little, not loudly, a soft little laugh of amusement. "You seem a little surprised. You must really think highly of me then." She shrugged. "Not a lot of jobs you can get with my work history, I had to quit so much because my Dad kept moving us around but, I'm living with my other Dad, supposedly my real Dad by blood now, so, I'm hoping to get out of it and. .work. Really wory where guys don't grab up on you as much and a bonus isn't sitting in his lap and gyrating."

She smiled, nodding. "I know, I was just teasing you. You're a nice guy. I wouldn't think you'd pull something that low." She was thoughtful and the bartender gave her the funny eye, so she just flashed him her "ID" before he even asked. he didn't bother thoroughly looking to see if it was real. "Jeez, a beer is fine, whatever's on tap." She said with a nod, putting her elbows on the surface to prop her head into her hands. "So why did you become a rancher, Jack?"

"S'not a good line'a work for a lady like y'self, Chel. I ain't one t'judge, but y'don't deserve t'have guys treatin' you like that," He sighed a little, watching the exchange between her and the bartender. Getting a better eye on her ID, he scoffed a little, but hid it around the rim of his bottle.

Knowing better than to mention the ID, he just tried to think on her question. "'Dunno, m'dad worked herds when I was a kid. 'Kept food onna table. M'not what y'd call an educated man. S'honest work, 'like bein' out on th'range." He let that trail off, sure she didn't really want to hear his life story, settling on taking another drink.

She smiled and nodded. "Yeah, it'll be nice to get away from it, one way or another. I got puished into finding fast money, I worked for a fencing company at 16 but they wanted all their workers to be 18 for insurance reasons, so they let me go."

When the tender turned away she spoke quietly to him., "I don't do this often, but I turn 21 the 21st, so, I mean it's not a big difference." she listened to him and nodded, smiling a little. "Education is useful to those who make use of it, for the rest of us, it's whatever we choose to make use of that counts, Jack." Wise beyond her years and yet pretty freakin' dumb. "I still haven't really decided what to do on a long term living."

Jack nodded a little at her whispering. "I said I ain't one to judge, miss. Y'know what you can take." And then at her comments on education, he shrugged. "Do what y'can t'get by. S'all I done, an' I ike t'think I had a pretty good life."

"Yeah I know, but whether you judge or not, you do think. Don't need an education to do that." The man came over with her glass and set it down before walking off to serve someone else, She took a drink before sighing, sitting back.

"So you mentioned your Dad, how big is your family?"

"I don' talk t'em anymore," And that was all Jack would say on the subject, choosing instead to nurse his beer in silence for a second.

Until he realized he'd asked her here to talk, in the first place. He turned to her with a sigh, and an apologetic smile.

"Sorry, Chel. I jus'... fam'ly's a tough subject, f'me. I shouldn't'a said."

Chelis shrugged, honestly unphased. "Don't be sorry, it's fine. Everyone's different." That was basically her motto.

"Nah it's fine. I don't have much of one to tell about myself. I have my Dad Charlie, he adopted me when my mom and her husband got killed, they were friends, and just found out my Daddy really is my Daddy. And that's it." She rolled her neck a bit. "Well, and my real dad's boyfriend I guess. I don't know him yet tho."

She hated just talking about herself, so she tilted her head, looking at him with interest. "So, do you follow sports or are you a secret artist? Tell me about you, I wanna get to know jack Twist- the person."

Jack smiled a little at her; it was almost sad, to see a girl so young have to be so old, but he respected her for that.

"Sorry t'hear 'bout your dads," The menion of her dad's boyfriend didn't pass him by, but he didn't mention it- maybe Ennis was right, maybe everyone here is queer. Still, it really wasn't like he had room to talk there either.

At the questions about him, he put his beer down, twirling the glass against the bar in a thoughtful motion. "S'not a whole lot to know. Did rodeo between cattle drives. 'Got a bit of a thing for football, baseball... Play a bitta harmonica. Damn badly, 'ccordin' to Ennis. But he's just an ornery sunuvabitch- pardon m'language."

She shrugged. "I try to never be sorry. Being sorry is sort of pointless, it just drags you down, y'know? There's too much world to see and life to live to be stuck in one place feeling sorry." She laughed a little, eyes staring a brief moment into her glass, watching the gold-colored liquid dance.

She perked quite a bit when he brought the rodeo up, intently leaning in her seat a bit, eyes shining with fiery interest. "Oh, you did rodeo?? So you rode bulls? Or fought 'em? That's so cool! Gosh, I'd love to try something like that!" Daring, yes. But she was young and truly full of life. She laughed softly at his bit about playing harmonica. "Well, you could always take some lessons and surprise him with some good music, I know a bit about it but my Dad would know more, I play mostly keyboards, piano." She was so out of practice tho she wasn't sure she remembered how. He'd taught her when she was five and she'd kept it up even when Charlie took her away, until he'd told her she wasn't any good, when she was 12.

"Y'obviously ain't had a good mountain-Catholic upbringin'," It was obivous by his tone he considered her lucky for that.

Considering she seemed interested in the rodeo, he smiled and leaned back a little, settling in for 'that' conversation; he found it funny, he'd gotten more than one girl this way, but he wasn't even thinking of her that way. He just wanted company. "Rode bulls, broncs, an' did some roping. Won a few tournaments- got me some cash when I needed it. An' it was a damn good time," His smile grew at her laugh- it was a nice sound- and he nodded at her mention of playing keyboard. "I ain't been that lucky. Always wanted t'learn piano. been tryin' t'get a bit of guitar, while I can. Gimme somethin' to do out on th'drive."

"No, no I didn't." She laughed again softly. "I don't think I really belong to any religion, really. I was sort of raised agnostic, if anything." She shrugged.

"That is so cool." She made for an envious pouting face and laughed at herself, taking another drink of her beer. "You must be mighty brave, Jack. Might brave." She thought about that last bit, shrugged. "I wouldn't say I was any more lucky than you. You were in a rodeo!" She teased, giggling. "Charlie wouldn't let me near enough to a horse to pet it, let alone ride one, or a bull." She sighed, not in distress, but moreso. .out of habit. "I guess I haven't had a half bad life, just got robbed is all, in a few ways. But I guess we all do at one point or another."

The comment about not being around horses struck him as strange- growing up in ranch country, he couldn't think of someone who'd never rode before.

"Y'seriously never rode as a kid? 'Seems strange. Call me a hick, but 'just seems wrong." He thought for a second, taking another drink of his beer before smiling a little. "How 'bout this- I'm shit at skiing, an' I hear talk the snow's gone anyhow, but I can ride. How 'bout we remedy that, right now?"

"Not once, not even a pony." She was in the middle of taking a sip of her drink when he mentioned going riding and she didn't bother taking the sip, set the glass back down, pearly whites shining in a smile as excited as a child meeting Santa. "You're serious?" She gave a sound of excitement. "Gosh, yes! I'm terrible at skiing, I'd love to go ride!" She finished the beer and hopped to her feet. "I think I just found my new best friend."

Jack had on one of his more charming smiles at her reaction, finishing off his drink as well. "It'd be wrong'a me not t'offer, Chel. Take it that means y'ready t'go?" He reached for his wallet, dropping a bill on the table to more than cover their couple of beers, to help the barman look the other way, about Chel's obvious youth.

Leading the way to the door, he stood back to hold it open for her, pointing off to his truck. "Y'chariot, ma'am," He gave a good little bow, apparently willing to make fun of his own manners, with the prospect of having a bit of honest fun with a pretty girl.

She followed him outside with a huge smile pasted permanently to her face, more enthralled than he could probably imagine. Charlie would be listing al lthe reasons she shouldn't even be getting into his car right now, let alone going horseback riding with him right now. Which made it even easier to move over to the truck with him.

"A noble steed, good sir." She deepened her voice jokingly, added a raspy quality to it and giggled at herself. When he opened the door to it she climbed in, glancing briefly around, wanting to squeal with her delight as she looked out the windshield out over their surroundings. This was definitely different, but she liked it.

"Anything for you, ma'am," Jack tipped his hat to her before tapping it back on his head, climbing into the driver's side and turning the car over. The radio, surprisingly, was playing a bit of classic rock, and Jack was relatively quiet on the ride up, only humming along to the music on occasion. It didn't take them long before they pulled through a large set of gates, up a private drive to a nice farmhouse.

Putting the car in park, Jack walked around to open Chel's door for her again, offering her a hand to help her down. "Watch your step- s'country, now. Some right nasty things onna ground, y'either wanna look out for, or jus' not see."

"Ah, careful, that's dangerous." She said with a playful wink, sitting back halfway, still anxious to see what sites went by. She hummed to the music herself every couple of minutes, knowing every song that played, shy about it. At home she'd be belting the words out but, that just wasn't appropriate in this setting, even for her.

Chelis took his hand and stepped carefully down, pausing as the door shut to turn in a circle, looking around with a breathless smile. "Jack," she made an amused sound. "It's so beautiful." She complimented, never having seen so much open space in her life.

Jack watched her look around, enjoying the sense of wonder on her face. "S'a nice patch'a land, yeah. 'Got half the mountain in back, too, 'pparently. S'alot for th'two of us, but s'lookin' like we're gonna manage anyway."

After giving her another minute to look around, he waved a hand and started off towards the stables, before realizing that might've been rude. "Y'need somethin' t'eat or somethin', from the house? I'm a right awful cook, but 'ere oughta be somethin in there for ya, if ya want,"

She nodded, following him until he stopped, looking curiously at him before laughing softly. "Oh, gosh, no I'm fine. It's ok." She shoved her hands into her pockets. "Nah I ate a bit ago, I'm fine, thank you, though." That was oddly sweet, she couldn't imagine what his childhood had been like if he had manners like that.

"Alright. Y'wanna just head back, then?" He was already on his way past the house, asking more out of habit than anything. In truth, his childhood hadn't been too bad- he was just taught the right way to treat a lady, and considering Chel didn't sound like she got that a lot in her life, he figured she deserved it.

A short walk later, they approached a good-sized stable, the general hustle and bustle (and smell) of the barn greeting them. He led her over to the side door, leading the way inside.

"Yeah, let's!" In her life being so polite was the result of really strict, almost, if not, abusive parents. She'd never had that, but she had her manners, always said please and thank you. It was a pretty good indication of how different of lives they led.

Walking inside, despite the smell she grinned more, if possible. "My gosh, how cool is this?" She laughed. "You must really get a kick out of how amused I am, but this is stuff you only ever read about in the city, unless you go to like, the county fair. And sometimes they don't have any good livestock."

A border collie trotted over to them, barking and growling slightly at Chel. Jack whistled over at it, and the dog seemed to calm down slightly, moving to sniff at her curiously. "Sorry, Cada's all we got, passin' for guard dog. She's all bark, no bite." He rubbed the dog's head a bit before shooing her off, walking down the aisle in the barn, turning back to her.

"'Don't really know what y'wanna see, but go 'head. Nothin's gonna bite. 'Cept maybe Ick, but f'you get close enough t'him for him t'try, s'not good," He nodded over towards a larger stable, where an ornery looking horse was shifting from foot to foot.
