He was worried about Ganieda, worried about her living situation, worried about her mom, and worried that it would go really wrong, really fast. He wanted to protect her, even as he did not know how, and he feared that if anything happened, it would be when he was not around. And that would kill him.

He raced down the roads, using back streets, moving as fast as he could. He had a baseball bat in the backseat, in easy reach, and he was ready, if fearful, should something happen. God, he wished he knew how to help her, how to make this right.

What the hell did he, a young guy from Nowheresville, know about helping people?

Nothing, maybe, but he knew he had to try.

As he turned down her street, he slid the lights down, and slowed to a saner speed, eyes on her building and everything around him, tense, and worried.

	She leaned back, closing her eyes. "Anywhere, as long as it's quiet," she said. "My head is humming. I did not think the argument would last that long. I've got my school books and a change of clothes with me. I think my mother assumed I was going to be out all night." She frowned. 	He nodded, then started the car and sent it slowly down the street toward the next one, slowly picking up speed. "Okay. Maybe a pizza place, or a coffee shop, a quiet one? "That sounds nice," she said softly. At least she was not in danger of tears anymore. Crying would do no one any good.

But she was very afraid, and aside from what was going on right now, she wasn't sure why.

"Spending time with you is all I want right now." She shivered; she'd forgotten a jacket, and the night was a little chilly. "And I think a quiet coffee shop sounds good."

And so does snuggling. Snuggling sounds very good. Because whatever he thinks he is or is not, Ganieda feels safe with him.

	He smiled softly. "It will be okay, Ganieda. Somehow." He smiled and nodded, glanced and saw her shuddering. "There is a jacket in the backseat, you can wear it. It will keep you warm." "Oh," she said softly. She leaned over to kiss his cheek.

"That's the sweetest thing I have heard in a long time." She leaned her head on his shoulder as they drove to the coffee shop.

She determined that she would not allow herself to stay in that apartment any longer than she deemed it safe.

Why should she stay where she was unhappy when there were people whom she could live with that would let her be happy?

"I hope you never have to," she says softly. "But it touches me that you would."

It was now that she was discovering that she had unwittingly chosen a very good man. She bit her lip and looked down when he touched her face.

"No. But Belle will tell him, I am sure, that something is amiss. He can communicate with me from some distance, so he will check up on me, I am sure. Barring that, I still have my cell phone."

She looked back up at the streetlights, feeling tears ache behind her eyes again. She shut her eyes tight until it passed.

It was her turn to blush brightly, then.

"I want to be with you, too." But this was enough for her, for now. Well, perhaps not, but she did want to do things right for both of them. "I'm...glad you will wait for me."

They sat in companionable silence for a moment or two, just enjoying each other while Ganieda's frayed nerves began to repair themselves. Her eyes were stinging as if they were tired.
