Who: Candy and Onyxx.
What: Reunions.
When: After this thread.
Where: Minnesota, then who knows?
Warnings: Probably just copious amounts of adorable.

Candy could barely believe it. It had only been four months for her, and somehow it had been a decade for Onyxx. She sat down in the middle of the field where the lighthouse would have been if the flood she'd helped created hadn't washed it away. The only difference between where she'd been and where she was after the vortex dropped her was that the Abarat was unreachable, and Chickentown didn't exist. Not being able to get to the Abarat rankled, but she shoved it to the back of her mind. She wanted - no, she needed - to see Onyxx.

He looked older, and he sounded angry. They weren't things that she'd ever wanted for him. Even as she'd been in the Abarat, fighting for her and everyone else's lives, she'd thought of him, and hoped he'd wait for her. And apparently she'd died. For some weird reason, that felt like she'd let him down.

Wiping off bloody and muddy hands in the grass, she stood up again, waiting for his arrival. He might have aged ten years, but she knew she'd recognize him.

She probably heard the sound of his approach before actually seeing him. If she'd ever heard a hot rod revving it's engines, she'd recognize that someone was driving one at full pedal-meet-floor speed. Of course it wasn't his. He'd stolen it. The man that owned it tried to put up a fight, but Onyxx put his fingers through the man's eyeballs and out the back of the head, inspired by something he read in a comic book once.

He'd wiped the blood off on the man's clothes before he'd hopped in and headed off. He somehow had a feeling he wouldn't need the car for long. If he knew Candy, and he liked to think he knew her pretty well, he had a feeling she'd want to fly rather than drive. He did too, but alas, he had no flight capabilities...yet. His researchers were still working on it.

When he saw her he put the brakes on and spun the wheel, going into a spin that would whiz harmlessly by her. It was, however, headed straight for a tree, and at the last second he jumped from the car. Either he was trying to make it look like he'd died...

...or he was showing off.

He landed on his feet, pretty much right in front of her. He did look older, and had grown a thick beard and let his hair grow out, even down his back. His face was leathery and was developing lines from a great deal of shouting. But for the first time in a long, long time there was happiness in his eyes. "CANDY!" He grabbed her and lifted her off the ground, hugging her close to him and not letting go. "Oh god...oh god..." He couldn't believe this. He couldn't believe that after so many years she was alive and here and he could hold her again. "I love you so much..."

Candy could hear the sound of a car revving before she could see it. Her mouth twisted up into a grin that she couldn't get rid of, no matter how many times she bit her lip. Idly, she wished she knew a spell that would clean the stitchling mud and sea water and blood off of her, but she knew that he wouldn't care. Still, she ran her fingers through her wet, tangled hair, trying to get it to look somewhat presentable.

When the car approached her, she squinted her eyes shut, trusting him that it wouldn't hit her directly. When she heard the resounding metallic clang of it hitting a tree, she opened her eyes just in time to see him landing in front of her. She wanted to stand there and examine all the changes that he'd made - the sad lines around his eyes, the way he held himself like a snake coiled to strike. But then he was lifting her into his arms and she knew that inside, deep inside where nobody could touch, he was still her Onyxx.

She wrapped her arms tightly around him, burying her face in his neck to keep from crying. "I"m here, I'm so so sorry." Her fingers clung to his shirt, suddenly obsessed with touching him, learning the new lines of his body. "I love you too, I would've come home sooner if I could, I'm sorry - " Her voice trailed off and she moved her head so she could kiss him, blood on her face be damned.

Onyxx didn't care about the mud or the blood. He'd been covered in both before, and even if he hadn't, what was a little mud and blood when he could finally hold her again? It was unimportant. All he cared about, the only fact that mattered right now, was that Candy was alive. That was it.

"Shhh, it wasn't your fault. You don't have anything to apologize for." He leaned in to kiss her, one arm wrapped tightly around her waist and his other hand stroking her hair gently. He was content to continue kissing her until he ran out of oxygen. He would never let go of her again, that was for certain.

She was reluctant to break the kiss, but she knew they should probably move somewhere where she could take a shower. He might not care that she was covered in blood, but she was fairly certain that authorities would. She also didn't want to explain why she was covered in sea water in the middle of Minnesota; she smelled like salt and sun.

"Let me summon a glyph, we'll go somewhere safe and I'll shower and you can tell me everything." As she spoke she punctuated her words with kisses, unwilling to let a silly thing like speech get in the way of their reunion. Reluctantly pulling away, she moved to an area of the field where she could move enough to summon a two seated glyph, as they wouldn't need more room than that.

She started to move in a circle, pulling air from outside the circle and throwing it into the middle where it started to glow. As she started to speak, a deeper, more authoritative alto joined her from within, Boa contributing her powers to the summoning. "Ithni asme ata, Ithni manamee, Drutha lotacata, come thou glyph to me." Speaking old Abaratian made her feel good, and she managed to summon most of the glyph within minutes.

While it solidified, she went over to hold Onyx again, mumbling into his chest. "It'll be another minute or two before it's ready."

Onyxx watched as she summoned the glyph, filing away the fact that she had a second voice for later pondering. Right now it didn't matter. She was back, and that was all that mattered right now. He probably would bring it up later, out of curiosity, but he was too happy right now to even feel curious.

Had the police shown up, Candy would have seen how brutal and harsh Onyxx had become. The last time he fought police, for instance, he'd torn off a man's head and spine and then used it like a large flail to beat the rest of the police with. It had been gruesome and deeply satisfying for him.

He stroked her hair and kissed the top of her head, smiling at the smell of the sea that clung to her. It reminded him of their first date, which was never a bad thing to be reminded of. "What happened doesn't matter now. It's not important. You're here and alive and that right there is it. Nothing else matters."

Understanding that he might not want to talk about it, she nodded. She'd thought she wanted to know - there was so much sadness behind his eyes that hadn't been there when last she'd seen him - but he'd said she'd died. Judging from his reaction to seeing her, she surmised that maybe he hadn't taken it well. Of course, if their roles had been reversed, she was sure she would've been sad too. Boa whispered in the back of her mind that Finnegan had the same sorrow in his eyes, and Candy wondered why she and Boa had to keep dying.

Once the glyph was ready, she tugged him by the hand, climbing in and moving off of the ground when he was safely inside as well. "It doesn't matter where we go, but it'd help if I knew where we were headed." She smiled and squeezed his hand, leaning over to kiss him again. She moved closer, curling into his arms, able to pilot with not really seeing much. There weren't that many tall buildings in that part of Minnesota.

Onyxx returned the squeeze and the kiss, then held her close as she curled up. "The cabin," he said with a nod. "We'll go to the cabin." That was a simpler, and far better, time for him. The memories there were good, things he treasured. It seemed like the best place to stay.

He paused for a few moments, his head lowering and his eyes half-closing. He was thinking on something. After a few more moments, he sighed. "If you'd like to know, I will tell you, but..." He shook his head sadly. "It isn't a happy story."

"The cabin's perfect." The glyph moved like it knew exactly where it was going, and it did. That hadn't been very long ago for her at all, and sometimes she'd found her thoughts drifting there during her journeys. To be sure, when she was about to being chased by the Five Beasts of Efreet she'd thought of him, thought of swimming lazily in summer heat. Maybe it was how she'd managed to stay so fleet-footed while running around in the snow.

She watched him as he thought, his body language at once both familiar and strange. "I'd still like to know. It's your life. That means I want to know everything." She was practically on top of him, wanting to be as close as possible, and the glyph seemed to sparkle along with her joy. Sad stories were the past - they had new ones to write in the present.

He smiled and rubbed her back, tucking her head under his chin as he held her. "It really is." There were many times during the war that he wished he could go back there, but it was too high profile a target for the enemy. He had to stay under guard when not out on missions, or the enemy would have been able to take him out.

"Alright," he said slowly, unable to keep from sighing a little. "But not until we're comfortable at the cabin." He wouldn't tell such a sad story until they were cleaned up and comfortable. It just didn't seem right to him.

She sighed contentedly as the glyph flew faster, understanding her desire to get to the cabin as fast as possible. It wasn't too terribly far, and with the glyph speeding as fast as she dared high over houses and out of sight, she was soon sitting up to focus a little harder on landing. Landing was more difficult than just flying.

On the ground, she didn't know if they'd need to make a hasty getaway or not. Because she'd grown accustomed to needing a Plan B, she let the glyph sit out, figuring that by the time anyone saw it, she and Onyxx would already know that someone was there.

She didn't know if there were any clothes that would fit her in the cabin, but anything had to be better than stitchling mud. It was imbued with necromantic magic, the very lifeforce of Mater Motley's created army, and it made her shiver. She kissed Onyxx on the cheek and pushed past him to get to the shower. She'd find clothes once she was clean.

Onyxx, meanwhile, headed into the kitchen. He'd become an exceedingly good cook over the years. Had things remained normal, he likely would've become a superhero, but if not that then he likely would've become a chef. While the cooking itself held no real value to him, even now he still loved to eat.

He prepared a hefty breakfast. Bacon, eggs, waffles - they were toaster waffles, but only because he didn't have time to make them from scratch - and toast. Luckily there was milk in the 'fridge, though he would wait to pour the glasses until he heard Candy ready to come out.

He also checked the forums very briefly, and it seemed like people were reporting being from entirely different situations than they had been in previously. It didn't take him long to figure out that people had been pulled from all different versions of their dimensions, whether it be their home dimensions or this one. ...If I see a guy named Mallory show up, I will atomize his head.

Candy was delighted to find soap and shampoo, and she started to wash her hair and skin enthusiastically. After a while she just stood under the spray, sighing contentedly. Hot showers were one of the few things she missed while in the Abarat. They were probably available in Commexo City, but she wouldn't set foot there.

After getting out of the shower and drying off, she found a men's t-shirt that was about three sizes too big for her and a clean pair of boxers. She threw them on, her wet hair trailing down her shoulders, and followed her nose out to the kitchen.

"You can cook now?" She grinned and leaned against the door to the kitchen for a moment, watching him hunched over a laptop. It didn't take her long to move over to him, getting between him and the computer to sit in his lap. "When did you pick that up?" She was feeling much more like herself, and she kissed him as she spoke, teeth gentle on his ear and neck.

Onyxx chuckled, reaching around behind her and closing the laptop. "Yes, I can cook. I felt that a leader should cook for himself, so I learned." He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the forehead, then tucked her head under his chin gently. "I've gotten pretty good at it, too."

And with that he grinned, wrapped one arm under her legs, and then picked her up and carried her over to the table. He deftly pushed a chair out for her and sat her down there, and then poured each of them a glass of milk. "Well," he said, pulling his chair up near hers and sitting down, "dig in!"

And with any luck, she wouldn't realize he hadn't started his story yet! Which was not at all what he was trying to do here. Noooo.

Candy smiled fondly at Onyxx, her fingers trailing over the stubble on his cheek. "I bet you're a wonderful leader." She loved that he seemed to have missed her as much as she'd missed him, and when his arms wrapped around her, she immediately nuzzled into him as best she could. That seemed to play into his plans; she was soon giggling when he carried her to the table, blushing faintly.

She munched on a piece of bacon, trying to quiet Boa inside her head. Odd. Both of us dead, but not. Were you assassinated as well? Candy forgot herself for a moment and spoke aloud to her soul's sister. "It's his story to tell Boa, he'll tell it in time." Realizing she'd spoken aloud, she blushed and looked over at Onyxx.

"When I was a baby - still in my mother - the Fantomaya found my mother. They'd traveled from the Abarat with a girl's soul. Her name was Boa, and she'd been the princess of the Daytime Hours. She'd been murdered on her wedding day. She was set to marry Finnegan Hob, a halfbreed, and she'd been assassinated by a dragon. The dragon was sent by someone who'd courted her, someone she'd rejected named Christopher Carrion." Candy swallowed hard, looking at her hands. Someone I just drowned.

Onyxx listened to her story, nodding a little at the end of it. That explains the dual voices. He assumed, since it sounded like she had been talking to someone other than him, that she was responding to something this other soul had said.

Then he saw the look on her face and just knew. He'd looked much the same after taking his first life. That time was hell. He took her chin gently and tilted her face up to look at him. "Hey, listen." He brushed his fingertips along her cheekbone. "I cannot know what happened to you there, but I know you. Whatever you did, you did out of necessity." He leaned forward and let his forehead come to rest against hers. "Try to remember that. It will make it easier."

Candy looked into his eyes for as long as she could without crying, closing her eyes so he wouldn't see them brimming with tears. Her arms wrapped around his neck and she climbed back into his lap, resting her head on his shoulder.

"He wanted to die with her. He realized she was - with me - and there was a flood and we were at my house - he was in Mom's bed, bleeding, and he - " She squeezed Onyxx harder, tears escaping in hiccuping sobs. "And my friends. They were fighting for me. I decided to come home so nobody else would die. Tria was only ten." She bit her lip hard and tried not to make noise while she cried.

He just held her, wrapping his arms around her tightly and stroking her back gently. He wouldn't tell her not to cry. This time, she needed to cry, needed to let it out. He remembered his own difficulties, dealing with the inevitable guilt that came with being a leader.

He just held her and made comforting noises, kissing the top of her head gently. "Let it all out. Don't hold anything back." This was the only way she would be able to deal with the emotions properly. Otherwise they would be bottled up, and things like this should never be bottled up.

She found herself sniffling and speaking through her tears, wanting to comfort him at the same time. "I - I'm so sorry I died. If losing friends hurts this much..." She didn't want to know what she would do if she lost him again, and for good. How she'd ache was unfathomable, and she could tell it had been hard for him.

"How ... was it honorable?" She wanted to make sure she'd died as she'd always tried to live, fighting for the good guys.

He sighed, looking away now. How to answer this question...? He considered his phrasing for a few minutes, thinking back to exactly how it happened. "You were trying to save a child." Another moment passed as he considered how to put this. "What you were trying to do was honorable. Your death..." He trailed off, unable to say it, but he did shake his head. "Humans are bigoted, reactionary creatures," was all he would say about it.

He really, really didn't want to tell her about what happened to her killers. Or rather, what didn't happen because a friend of hers pardoned them. "I made sure they regretted their actions." His face was dark as he said it, and there was a look of actual happiness in his eyes, as if he'd enjoyed it...which he had. Greatly.

She didn't say anything, but Boa spoke for her, a sharp report of harsh laughter. "Clearly, she is my sister if we are to be sacrificed for the same cause twice. Why do people reject unity and joy?"

Once Boa was done having her say, Candy went quiet. "You could've ... " She was about to say that he could've moved on, that he could've been happy without her, but she knew that wasn't true. She also knew she would've done the same thing. "Thank you for remembering me."

Onyxx scowled darkly, clear disdain written on every inch of his face. "The insects hate and fear what they do not understand. They will persecute anything that doesn't fit into their pretty picture of normality." He clearly had no respect for humanity.

Candy sighed. Her experiences with Carrion had clearly shaken her, and as much as she didn't want to believe Onyxx, she didn't entirely disagree.

When he looked away from her, she caught his cheek with her palm. "I don't fault you, Onyxx. I know that much." She and Boa were sympathetic to what they assumed he'd done.

"I don't fault me, either," he told her quickly, meeting her eyes. There was a sudden flare of anger in his eyes, but not in his voice. "Everything I have done is righteous. These insects do not deserve to walk on this world."

He took a deep breath and made a conscious effort to push the anger from his eyes. "I'm sorry." He sighed and leaned his head back against the back of his chair. "I have a few unresolved anger issues." None of which clouded his judgment, of course.

Onyxx resisted the urge to suggest that they go test it out. He enjoyed the killing these days, but he had a feeling she didn't. "Hopefully we won't have to test that out." He sighed again, letting all that tension out through his nose. "The past doesn't matter. Just the present." He looked up and kissed her again, long and deeply, his arms encircling her and keeping her as close to him as possible.

Onyxx smiled a little at that, an upturning of the corners of his mouth. These days he didn't smile very wide. "We did. We were." He thought back about it...and about the ring. The ring he'd never been able to give her. "We were very happy together." Another sigh escaped him, but this time just a sad, haunted sigh, rather than an angry one.

Onyxx stared into her eyes for a moment, and then slid one arm from around her. "Candy..." His hand slid under his shirt and drew out a very small, very subtle chain. On the end of it hung a small diamond ring, just the right size for her finger.

He lifted her hand and then yanked the chain off of his neck, letting the ring tumble off of it into her hand. "This was going to be yours..." He couldn't look her in the eyes now, avoiding her gaze. He figured the meaning was pretty clear.

She followed his eyes, then looked down to his hands. Once he put the object he'd been holding into her hand, she let herself actually look down at it. It was a ring, and at first she didn't realize the meaning, but it was something that she came to quickly enough.

"Do you still want it to be?" Her throat was dry, and she would've laughed at her voice being so croaky if she had been thinking about it.

Onyxx finally did meet her gaze, but only long enough to nod. "Yes. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Candy. I want to grow old with you. I want to have a life with you, never without you."

He could tear people apart on and off the battlefield. He could create plans worthy of the highest paid strategists. He could lead men and women into battle with the skill of a five-star general.

But he could not bear to look her in the eye while she said no. So out of fear of just that response, he went back to averting his gaze.

Candy didn't say anything at all. She undid the necklace so that she could put the ring on her finger properly. Once that was done, she put the necklace back around his neck, then sat back to look at her hand with a ring on it. She'd never been much for jewelry of any type, but he seemed to have kept that in mind when he'd bought it for her. It was a small thing, light and airy, and she smiled when she studied it.

Then she kissed him, as tentatively as she had the day they'd met. He had changed, yes - older, sadder, harder - but he was still the boy she loved, somewhere inside. And that was all she cared about.

Onyxx hadn't been looking at her the whole time she was putting it on. He was, truthfully, starting to get a little nervous at the lack of a response. Finally he chanced a look up, just as she was leaning in to kiss him, and he noticed the ring on her finger and broke out into this big smile right before she kissed him.

Though it was tentative, it was another long one. Onyxx didn't want it to end. He felt like the happiest man in the world today, as cliche as it sounded. "Love you so much," he panted, when they finally came up for air. He lifted one hand to gently stroke her cheek. "I haven't been this happy in a long, long time. Thank you."

Candy was grinning as their lips parted, her fingers running through his hair. "I know you do. And I love you too, just as much. I'm not going to go anywhere ever again, I promise."

She was thirsty, but didn't really feel like moving from her perch on his lap, so she looked behind her and waved a finger, murmuring a word in old Abaratian under her breath to get her glass to dart into her hand.

He quirked an eyebrow as she pulled the glass over. He wasn't sure if it was a spell or telekinesis, but he'd employed a few magicians in his time, and most of them seemed to have developed telekinesis during their experience. Maybe it was something that stemmed from magic. It made sense in his head, at least; magic worked your brain, and telekinesis came from the brain.

"That's a neat trick," he smiled, kissing her neck. "So what's the itinerary for today?" He figured she'd want to get some new clothes, so he told her, "We can head out to get you some new clothes later, if you want. Just let me know."

Candy chuckled. "I'm... a lot better at magic now, because of Boa." She looked almost sheepish, and she ducked her head behind her hair, but then Onyxx kissed her neck. She laughed and ran her fingers up and down his shoulders.

"I don't know. I figure we can just wash my old ones. I like Abaratian fabrics. And honestly, I'm fine in your clothes for now."

He laughed and kissed her again, stroking her sides with his hands. "So then what would you like to do today? The world is our oyster, and I dare anyone to get in our way." He dropped one hand to rub her leg gently. "Anything you want. Just name it."

"I just want to stay here with you. Maybe go swimming, or just... can we stay like this for a while?" She grinned, running her fingers through his long hair. "I just want to touch you."

"We can do that." He kissed her neck again, then reached around her and pulled her plate to her. "But first, you need to eat. You looked like you were in a pretty hairy situation before you got here." He definitely wouldn't be budging on that one, and he settled a stern look on his face that came from years of leading an army. "Then we can go swimming, or whatever else you want."

Candy nodded and turned around so that she was still in his lap. If he wanted her to eat, she would, but she wasn't moving. "Swimming takes a lot out of a girl, especially when you're trying to save your family from a flood you sort of helped make. I just kind of want to float on my back in the lake if it's all the same to you." She forked up some eggs and sighed contentedly. "You really can cook."

He didn't mind this at all. He wanted her to be as close to him as possible for as long as possible.

And her turning around in his lap did some interesting things to him. That too.

He slid his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her head. "Well, I did try extra hard," he teased.

Candy smiled and nuzzled backward into him when he put his arms around her. "Well, it all paid off. Aren't you going to eat?" She grabbed a piece of bacon and turned her head enough so she could sort of angle it into his mouth.

He chuckled and kissed her on the back of the neck, then nabbed the bacon with his teeth and tossed his head up, letting the bacon just fall into his mouth. Then he grinned and nuzzled her earlobe. "Table manners, however, are something I'm still working on." His hair was falling all over the place, not that he cared. It was almost like a veil.

She giggled when he ate his bacon like a hungry dog, moving backward into his nuzzle and returning them with her own. "Pfft. They're overrated. I like your hair like this," she mumbled, reaching out to stroke it.

He chuckled a little and kissed the crook of her neck. "I saw no need to cut it once the war began. I could fight just as well with it as without, and there was no need for unnecessary effort at the time." He rested his head on her shoulder and looked up at her. "If you like it, I'll keep it."

She kissed his forehead. "You don't have to do anything on my account. You should just do it because you want to, baby. It just suits you now. You're older. More... I don't know. You look older." She didn't want to say tired, but she thought it.

Onyxx had a feeling he knew what she was getting at here. She wasn't the only one to say it. His advisers had tried to imply that he needed a vacation, but he'd seen through it and squelched the talk quickly.

The truth is, she (and his advisers) were right. He was tired and in desperate need of a break. His war had taken a great deal out of him, likely shaving years off of his life. He would never take one voluntarily, though. No good leader did. Good leaders fight the war and keep fighting until it's over.

Still, he didn't bring it up. He just kissed her cheek along her jawline. "I don't see any reason to cut it," mumbled, resting his head next to hers. "And I am older. Probably significantly so." It was something they might have to deal with eventually, but right now he didn't care.

Candy reached her arms around to wrap around his neck. Even if she couldn't face him, she wanted him as close as possible. "We'll wait until I'm 18 and get legally married. But as far as I'm concerned, there's nobody else. As good as married, right?"

Suddenly she wasn't hungry, and she tugged on his arm to pull him upright. "Swimming, you said."

"As good as married," he agreed, kissing her shoulder gently. "There never has been anyone else for me, Candy. You're all I ever need." He leaned his head forward a little to kiss the corner of her mouth.

Then he was being pulled upright and he nodded. "Swimming sounds good." He smiled and lifted her up, one arm sliding under her legs to carry her over-the-threshold style. He grinned at her and began making his way out to the lake.
