Who: Palmer Montague and Saoirse Fawcett
When: Friday, after the ball (backdated)
What: their escape and a quiet talk
Where: leaving the Ministry and Palmer's flat
Rating: PG-13
Status: Closed/Complete

From the corner of his eye, he knew what the green glow meant. It meant death, and destruction, and chaos. It meant a few years of complacency now being tallied up like a debt.

"To the doors now, Saoirse." His hands still cupping her cheeks held her still until she met his eyes. "Trust me, do exactly as I say." Montague knew her nature. He loved her nature to not be pushed about, but tonight wasn't one of those nights he could indulge it.

Just seconds before Potter was barking at the Aurors to close the doors, he slipped out of the ballroom with S in tow, wanting to get them as close to an apparating point as they could. Fear and adrenaline were the only things driving him.

"It just seems so random," Saoirse said as she looked through his shirts. She found a t-shirt she'd seen him wear often and then unpinned her hair. "I mean, before now has there been any indication that something like this might happen? Though I suppose it was bound to...it's not like his supporters ever went away. As for targets, who knows. They could have been targeting us or going after the ministry officials that were there."

With a relieved sigh, she stepped out of her heels. She was really trying not to think about what the whole dark mark business could potentially mean. She hoped it was just a random attack, nothing more.

Carefully, she pulled her dress off her shoulders and let it fall to the ground. Her bra soon followed and then she pulled his shirt over her head. It was too long for her and wide at the shoulders, and it was comforting.

"Or the Ministry itself could have been the culprit, not the victim." He wasn't much for conspiracy theory but he'd worked in the Ministry of Magic long enough to know there were secrets. Plenty of secrets. "How else to put the fear into the populace and make them obey?" It sounded far fetched in his own head but he still had to say it. Anything other than the thought of Death Eaters regrouping.

"Let's not talk about it anymore. You're safe tonight." Palmer grinned smugly and wrapped his arms tightly around Saoirse. "With me."

Saoirse nodded along as he spoke. That would make sense. Scare them into standing with the Ministry. It was so disgustingly underhanded. She wouldn't put it past them now. Oh, how she'd lost faith so quickly in her government. They were unfit in her eyes now.

When Palmer put his arms around her, she smiled, nuzzled his chest. "The only place I want to be," she admitted. "It's been a while since I've been here."

With a whispered word, he noxed the lights and led Saoirse to bed. "Too long. That will change now. Angelina and I are getting a new place in Ireland. I'll keep this flat just for us."

Palmer smiled and kissed her hair. How ironic it was that he was moving closer to Saoirse, but her home was off limits with Marcus there now. This would become the place they could get away from everything and be together.

She really didn't want to think about him and Angelina. Just like she didn't want to think about her and Marcus. She curled into his side, rested her arm on his chest. "Can we stay here forever?" She said softly, not expecting an answer. If all she could have was him to herself for the rest of her life, she'd never stop smiling.

Stroking his hand over her back lightly, Palmer smiled in the darkness. He wanted nothing more. "We'll steal as much time was we can, love. You're the one I desire. The one I want to be bound to. I was thick not to see it before."

Palmer signed deeply and pulled Saoirse closer, kissing her head. "Mine."

"Mmm," Saoirse agreed. She used a fingertip to draw senseless patterns on his chest.

In the darkness she could pretend it was them getting married to each other and not to some strangers. She drew a cross on his skin, Protect him. Then she drew a heart next to it.

"I love you," she said softly, it was little more than a whisper, yet it hung there, clear as the moon. They'd never said it before. Certainly not when they were together, but it was just something she needed to tell him at that moment. She hoped he wouldn't freak out.

Her fingertip sent shivers over his skin and the moment between them stood frozen in time. Tilting her head back, Palmer devoured Saoirse's lips, begging entrance as he deepened their kiss.

The words were on the tip of his tongue but it seemed trite to say them as response. She would have to wait and hear them as a surprise, when she least expected and at least know, for now, he felt the same but how he held her. "I know."

Saoirse bit her lip, smiled. She was actually glad he didn't say it. She knew he loved her. If he had said it, it would have felt like she made him do so. The way he kissed her, the way he held her close. That was enough for her to know that even without the words, he loved her.
