WHO: Harry and Ginny
WHEN: Sunday Night
WHERE: Ginny's Flat
WHAT: Finding someone that doesn't tick him off
RATING: We'll say PG ... might be some slight cursing.
STATUS: Closed / In progress

Harry was absolutely ticked. He'd gone out with Hermione for an hour or two and the whole bloody world comes crashing down. There had been a reason he had never wanted to get married. He'd simply forgotten what it was until now. It was a bloody pain in the arse, that's what. He still couldn't believe this. She goes and says that she's falling in love with him then invites her ex-boyfriend to live with them the following day and wonders why he's not impressed. As far as he was concerned it didn't take a bloody rocket scientist to figure it out.

To hell with it. Adrian can have the whole fucking lot. To sa that he was angry might have be an understatement, but he couldn't help it. In all honesty, he was jealous, but for Harry that was a big deal. He'd never had to deal with this sort of jealousy before. He didn't know what to do with the doubts and it was coming out in the only way it could.

After what seemed like ages, Harry finally arrived outside of Ginny's flat. He'd partially come here to make a point to Daphne and partially because he was comfortable around Ginny. He had always been and there was a trust there that he didn't exactly feel with Daphne at the moment. After climbing the steps and knocking on her door, he reeled in as much of his anger as possible. One could still tell as it was all but creating a bubble around him, but at least he was trying.

Ginny had expected to be able to figure out, as much as she could, what was wrong by his face or his voice. With his returned greeting, Ginny peeked over her shoulder at him, waiting for him to step farther inside and turned fully around only after he did. Turning on her heel, her hair following in her wake, Ginny looked at Harry. He was right, he hadn't spent much time in her flat. However, as far as she knew, her flat made her comfortable, at least. It had a feeling similar to the Burrow, but smelled less of cooking food and more of the girl herself. Or so she had been told by her other visitors.

Ginny looked at Harry, figuring what his expression, tone, and body language had to offer. She was fairly confident in her translation of the boy's characteristics. Ginny leaned on the arm of her couch, the eyebrows lowering a bit. He certainly didn't seem excited about something, which was one of the few options she had listed in her head for Harry's sudden visit. As Harry spoke, however, she pushed herself off the arm of the couch and circled it until she fell, again, onto the cushions. Ginny, of all the guests she had had at her flat, was certain she did not need to tell Harry to make himself comfortable.

Ginny folded her legs underneath herself and nodded up at Harry. "Yeah," Ginny sighed and rested her elbow on her knee, "Long day." She had expected he'd find his way farther in to the flat and so did not feel particularly as if she had to serve him or make sure he felt at home. She never much had to chaperon Harry about, as they were generally casual in all circumstances. Ginny looked to Harry, studying him for a moment more. She had got the impression he was angry. Perhaps worried. His eyes, though, they looked more like the prior than the latter, but she figured she would ask. "You all right? To what do I owe this honourable visit?" Ginny's face was soft, apart from her pulling smile, and genuine.

When Ginny moved to the couch, he followed after her, knowing that full well that she wouldn't tell him to be comfortable because he knew that already. When she took up her spot on one end, he grabbed a spot on the other, slouching down and leaning his head against the back of the couch which gave him a perfect view of the ceiling.

"No, not really." he responded, to her question about whether or not he was alright. He'd fully intended on ranting when he got there, but now that he was here, he didn't feel like that at all. He didn't know what he wanted to do. It as just an entire mess and he found himself lost among all the pieces he was trying to put together.

After another moment, he shrugged. "I don't know. I just...wanted to talk to someone who doesn't expect anything from me, I suppose."

Ginny's gaze was half looking at her fingernails, which she was nibbling on and half looking at Harry as he made his way to the couch. It was a habit - the nail-biting, that is, and she took her hand away from her mouth to keep a casual eye on Harry. Every so often, her eyes would narrow, as if she had come to a full conclusion without any other hints than his breathing pattern or his blinking. His posture on the sofa, however, pointed her more in the angry direction. Ginny tilted her head a bit and went back to biting the corner of her ring finger.

Ginny had thought, for a second, about asking why he was not particularly all right, but figured it would come out eventually, as it often did. And it did. Ginny looked intently, mostly with her eyes, at Harry. Taking her hand away from her face and tucking it between her knees, Ginny pursed her lips in a small smile. "I told you, I've learned not to expect anything from you a long time ago." She had recalled saying this to him rather recently, perhaps even the last time she had seen him. That would have been his wedding. She realised, again, for a moment, that she had been rather busy or, perhaps, self-distracted so as to create space between herself and the newlyweds. Then again, she did have quite a bit more than Harry and Daphne on her mind.

Ginny turned slightly on her part of the sofa, stretching her legs out in front of her. They were of the shorter Weasley variety, rather unlike Ron's, and did not reach the other side before curling her legs up underneath her again. Ginny laced her fingers together and leaned them on her knee, blinking at him. "Talk away, then. What did you do?" There was that familiar small tone of sarcasm in her voice. However, Ginny became a bit more serious in the next moment and rested her chin on top of the same knee. "What's wrong?"

Harry knew that part of the reason he'd come here was because he wanted to tell Ginny what had happned. He wanted her opinion on the matter. He trusted it and it had never steered him wrong in the past, but there was still a part of him that really didn't want to tell her. Perhaps it was the fear that he'd been the one to screw it all up and he didn't want it to be verified.

"This isn't ... working out as I'd hoped, is all." he responded, knowing that was a lame excuse. Nothing was working out how anyone wanted it to and he was the very last person that should be complaining on that part. "Call me nieve, but I just thought this whole marriage thing would be a good change. Something that would allow me to find something stable."

Since everything had started, stable had been the very last thing he'd found. "I just don't know what I'm doing anymore."

Ginny could have guessed what the whole thing was about. Not specifically, but she had a feeling deep in her throat that was hinting towards his new wife and his relationship with said person. She would not assume to the point of sharing her presumptions, but would have easily bet money on the subject. Instead, though, she watched her friend. Just watched. Doing so had told her more than he had probably meant to portray in the past.

Blinking softly at him, Ginny pursed her lips, picking her head off of her knee. Her assumptions were proven correctly as he began to speak more. Ginny rarely had to do much talking to really have a conversation with Harry. Initially, Ginny had wanted to comfort him and she would eventually come to, she believed. Something in her, however, was pressing doubt on her mind. She had been encouraged by George, by her friends that, perhaps this arrangement was for the better as well - that she could move on to bigger things. However, she liked the smaller details, too. Her instinct and actions were based on emotion, mostly. That is, she listened and nodded along to his speaking.

Half of Ginny didn't want to hear him, but the other half could see he came to talk. Ginny leaned forward a bit. "I know you've heard this one before. Excuse my repetition." Ginny shook her head as she spoke. "But change - good and bad - doesn't happen right away." She shrugged, leaning back. "The only time is happens right away is when you don't expect it to." Ginny smiled at him. "But I know you knew that." She was being sincere. All she had to offer was things Harry already knew, things that were proving difficult, despite his prior years of difficulty. It seemed rather unfair, but it was reality.

Ginny shrugged at him. "Why would you know what to do?" She certainly didn't know what she was doing. Ginny halfway wanted to ignore all details of Harry and Daphne's life so far, but the friend in her overpowered the ex in her. "What happened?" The ex in her, however, also thought of asking why he was there, why she was to be relied upon when he was stressed. The friend, again, made its presence known.

A hint of a smile tugged at the corner of Harry's mouth upon hearing her talk about change. She was right, he did know that. It had been a long lesson to learn and apparently there was times when he was still learning it. Change was only part of the problem. He'd spent so much time dealing with the quick, sudden changes that he had no idea how to handle the ones that came slowly.

"I've never known for sure what to do, but I've always had some notion. Some form of guidance pushing me in the right direction, whether it was you, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore...a million other people." It was true and Harry knew that better then anyone. He'd never been really alone when he'd faced any of his challenges. "But I don't have that anymore. I can't relie on you anymore. You've all got your own changes to deal with...and I'm more lost then ever."

What happened? He wasn't exactly sure he even knew. "I was trying really hard to make this work," he admitted, knowing she probably didn't care at all. He was more confused over his own actions then anything and needed an outside opinion to clarify things "I know you and Wayne aren't really close...but if you were married and he invited his Ex-girlfriend...one that had meant a lot to him...to live with you, what would you do? Are you suppose to be jealous or mad...even though, your marriage wasn't really planned or in a sense wanted at the time it happened?"

Ginny's smile reflected Harry's when she had caught it on his face. It was a nice change from the demeanor he'd been holding since he entered her flat. She had barely known she was doing so until he spoke again, in which Ginny also untangled her legs and laid them between her and Harry on the sofa. it was what he said that forced Ginny's smile away. Her forehead wrinkled and she tilted her head again towards him. "That's stupid of you to say." She spoke honestly, perhaps harshly, but honestly, at the very least. Sure, Ginny had quite a bit on her plate, but she did not buy what he had just said at all. "Asking for help is at least trying. I mean, I fit you into my busy busy schedule tonight, didn't I?" Ginny shook her head at him, a toothy and obvious smile pointed in his direction. "Just ask."

The subject of Wayne was one Ginny knew little about, even with her involvement. Ginny fell back a bit in her position, her chin ducking for a moment. Ginny shook her head. "You and Daphne seem to know eachother a bit better. It's not exactly comparable." Ginny pressed on, however, despite the strange sick feeling in her stomach. She wasn't sure if it was from discussing Daphne, their marriage, or her own. Ginny spoke as honestly as she could. It was difficult to explain, to translate the situations. "I think the normal feeling of a husband is to get angry or jealous when their wife invites an ex to live with you. Any other male, even." Ginny blinked, not looking at Harry, but returning to her hand to her mouth. "But this isn't a normal situation." Ginny blinked down at her hand. "If you're jealous, you're jealous. Perhaps the feeling is there because it's justified. You must feel something towards the relationship for jealousy to even occur." All right, so she was not as eloquent with this situation. But it was an obscure comparison, one she couldn't rightfully make. Ginny blinked up at Harry, smirking at him. "Sucks for you, it sounds like, though." Her tone reminisced it's prior sarcasm a bit, but she buffered it with a sympathetic smile.

Harry didn't respond when she had said that it was a stupid thing for him to say, not being able to rely on them. He wouldn't be able to forever, but he'd allowed himself to grow so attached to it that he floundered when they weren't around to help. He supposed he should be turning to Daphne now that they were married, but he was currently having a hard time being able to wrap his mind around that.

"I wouldn't exactly say we know each other," he muttered, frowning down at his socked feet. That was one of the reasons that they were in this mess. She spoke honestly and for that Harry had always respected her...but he still didn't know what to do with the entire situation, which certainly wasn't her fault.

That was about the only thing he knew in the current situation. He did feel something...he just hadn't put a name to it. "You know, despite all the difficulties we had there, I sort of wish we were back at Hogwarts right now." he responded. It was wishful thinking, nothing more, but he figured if he was going to face this new mess, he needed something to at least pick up his spirit. "End of the year, no more work, pushing Ron into the lake, and just waiting for summer. Things were so much simpler."

Ginny, had she been able to read minds, would have continually told Harry he was being stupid. Reliance on friends, on whoever you considered to be your family, was something that should be and would, as long as Ginny could willingly help it, be there. However, Ginny was no expert mind reader, but offered only her sincerity. She had noticed his lack of a response, noted it in her mind, and let him move on.

Ginny looked down at her hand again and back to Harry, narrowing her eyes, the small sick feeling returning slightly. "You want to know her better." Ginny's lips were straight and she gave a simple nod. "I could tell." It made sense, as well. If he and Daphne were going to try to work things out with the wedding, they had to try to know eachother, to like eachother. It was logical, it made sense. Maybe it's not what Ginny necessarily wanted to say or hear, but she figured it might be what Harry wanted to hear.

Hearing the nostalgia in Harry's voice, the reminiscence, Ginny's eyes narrowed in the wake of a large, cheeky smile. Ginny, who had been in between contentment with her current life and disdain for it, nearly agreed wholeheartedly. Things had to get simpler eventually. Things were simple at this moment - they were simply sitting. They had done this countless times before. Ginny could feel a swelling in her chest at the thought of Hogwarts. She had missed it dearly when she stopped to think about it, but was convinced she was perfectly happy without it at other times. "I think the definition of simple changes with age." At least, it made sense to her. Things were not always simple at Hogwarts, or so she thought at the time. But they were simple now. They were solved and over, of course they were simple - they had gone and passed. Ginny shrugged at Harry and pursed her lips.

Ginny had a dull ache in her chest. Of course it had crossed her mind to ask why he had come to visit, apart from, perhaps, a break from Daphne. But he could have gone to Ron, to Hermione. He could have gone off somewhere himself. "Why'd you end up here?" She had figured her initial intention and every awkward follow up question that led to the core meaning of "did you come here to get a rise out of Daphne?" Hopefully he could hear her number of questions in that single one or in her voice.

Harry laughed lightly. "Simple is kicking your feet up with a good block of chocolate." he responded, glancing over toward her. "Always has been and always will be. It's my favourite part of life." Harry didn't have a sweet tooth when it came to most foods, but when it came to chocolate, the sweeter the better.

In all honesty, he wasn't exactly sure why he'd come here of all places. He could have easily gone to Ron's, or Hermione's. It probably would have made more sense to go to either one of those places. He knew coming here would get a rise out of Daphne, but he didn't think he actually intended that. If that was the case, he could have just told her that was where he was going and leave it at that. He didn't have to actually come.

"I don't know why I showed up here of all places." he responded, with a light shrug."Perhaps, it's because you tell me what I have to hear instead of what I want to hear and I need at least one person in my life who's willing to do that, otherwise I'd be completely off my rocker."

Ginny's lips curved upward of their own accord. "Well, of course there are some universal definitions of simple." Ginny shook her head at him, chuckling a few airy laughs. "Gimme a break. You know what I meant." Sure, Ginny can think of multitudes of things that were simple when she was younger that are still simple now. In all its complexity - the yard of the Burrow always seemed simple to her. Grass, flowers, pigs, and gnomes. Completely simple. This was simple. Conversation had always been simple for Ginny, even when it was to be a very meaningful conversation.

Ginny sighed, pulling her hair out of its ponytail and allowing it to fall against her back and into her face a bit. She had just gotten back from work - even the tie that had been holding her hair back seemed restraining after hours in between shelves. However, she had continued to watch Harry's movements, even without looking directly at him. She could tell when he was thinking and it was always clear when he was happy. She could tell he wasn't happy, but was a fair bit better than when he had walked in.

When Harry spoke, Ginny did look directly at him, but had her gaze pulled away in her own momentary thought. Of course, she had very little to think of. She had been told this a few times in her life. Her response was usually similar each time. "I figure that's what I'm supposed to do." Ginny's smile tugged at her lips as she looked at Harry. "I could tell you what you want to hear." She took in a breath. "Oh, Harry Potter, you're amazing. Let me fawn over you and your unmanageable hair and your occasional ability to be too effing nice." Ginny feigned a fawning voice and become suddenly animated, holding her hand over her heart. Within seconds, however, she was back to her normal relaxed state, her voice it's normal octave, despite her impending smirk. "And you're already off your rocker, I thought we've discussed this." This, also, was one of her usual responses.

For the first time since he had arrived, Harry actually laughed. Not chuckled, or smiled lightly, but actually laughed. It felt a hell of a lot better then the other two options. "You're right," he grinned, rolling his eyes. "That was exactly what I wanted to hear. Merlin knows I don't hear that enough in week. It needs to be done at least once a day."

He could feel the tension start to drain off of him and the sense of guilt for reacting before he could really think it through start to poke at him, which, he thought, was truly unfair. Anyone would have reacted poorly had their wife told them they invited another man into their house. It was just .. awkward and full of tension. He didn't want that. He wanted simple and this was anything but simple.

"Sorry, for basically barging in on you," he offered, once he'd pulled himself back from his thoughts."But I really needed this. Ron would have been angry for me and Hermione would have told me the percentage of all marriages that fail. Neither one of those things would have made me feel any better. I appreciate this, Gin."

Ginny's eyebrow peaked upward and she shook her head. "Well, I refuse to boost your ego that much." She was glad to hear him laugh, glad enough to laugh along with him and continue teasing him. "I could write it down for you if you want. Look at it whenever you're feeling down. Or record it, even. Huh? That sounds good, right?" Ginny nodded animatedly, nudging him with the heel of her foot in exaggerated support. She punctuated the thought with an airy laugh and a small smile.

Ginny pulled one of her knees to her chin again, and sighed. She could have easily fallen into her bed and slept for hours as soon as she got home. However, this was a nice change. She had forgotten how much she missed company only when company was given to her. Her thoughts, however, were still ridden with doubts concerning the person sitting beside her. If he hadn't seemed as irked as he did, Ginny would have questioned him more on the reasons he was there, the reasons he married Daphne, the reasons they hadn't spoke since she forced herself to keep quiet at his wedding.

However, as Harry continued speaking, his appreciation began to win her over. Or, at the very least, push her doubts away momentarily. Had this been five years ago, Ginny was sure she would have spoken up, perhaps rashly and strongly. She had been told, though, by more than a few people to behave, to keep quiet, to let Harry be happy and to be happy herself. These days, however, have been days in which she lives one by one, unplanned and a bit stagnant, even if she had been planning a wedding - something most people wait to do their whole life.

Ginny shook her head at Harry. "Don't apologise. I would have been in bed before nine o'clock if you didn't show up." Ginny smiled meekly. "And that would have been a shame." Ginny nodded to herself, mostly, that ache in her chest making itself known again. "And it's no problem. That's what I'm here for." She offered him a smile and looked back to him. She could tell he was doing fairly better and it didn't hurt her to be told her honesty was appreciated. That is, the honesty that she was willing to offer. Ginny sighed at Harry, pulling herself up a bit. "Feeling any better?" She already knew the general answer.

"We all need to go to bed at nine o'clock every once in a while, particularly these days," he responded, knowing that she was probably tired. He knew how hectic the shop could get. He'd been there when George had needed the extra hand. It wasn't surprising that you could be worn out after an eight hour shift, particularly when dealing with the sort of customers that came in.

"Better then I did." He was by no means happy, but he was certainly feeling better then he had been when he'd arrived and that was something. It had been nice to laugh with her again. It had been quite a while since they'd actually been able to without being rushed or surrounded by a horde of people.

"You can tell me not to apologize, but you know I will." he responded, pushing himself up. He had taken up enough of her time with his worries. He was sure she had her own to worry about without adding his. In all honesty, it was probably better to try and fix this mess before letting it brood, otherwise it might just get worse. Offering her a hand, he smiled lightly. "You should sleep, Gin. You look tired ... and I mean that in the best possible way."

Ginny smiled at Harry as he spoke. She could have guessed this would be their parting conversation, especially since she could see he wasn't completely miserable. Speaking of which, "And you looked miserable when you first got here," Ginny smiled, taking his hand and pulling herself up, too, "In the best way possible." Ginny did not know what this meant exactly, but she felt it was in the best way possible in that he looked better now. This was a compliment, she believed.

Part of Ginny wanted Harry to stay. All of the company she had in her flat so far, she would have preferred they stay, even her mother, at times. Ginny had a feeling the next few days would be ones of reminiscing, of getting in touch with friends, of visiting home - and not just because she had a wedding to plan and go through with. As she tugged on her shirt, coming to her feet, Ginny put her hand on Harry's back to usher him to the door. He had recovered, enough, it seemed and was on his way home or, well, somewhere. "Oh, and next weekend - wedding at my house." Ginny smiled to herself. "Not this one, the Burrow, I mean."

As they reached the door, Ginny wrenched it open and rested her hand on her hip, leaning tiredly against the frame. "You can apologise all you want, you know I won't accept it." Grinning, still wondering whether or not she should have given him a harder time, stepped forward and hugged him around the middle. She hoped she wouldn't have to double think everything she did with Harry because he was now a married man. Ginny let go, leaned back against the door frame and allowed him to leave, offering him a small grin.

He was a bit surprised when she mentioned a wedding. The last time he had spoken with her there had been no wedding and she hadn't been particularly interested in having one. A part of him was relieved that she wasn't going to fight the ministry. He'd been to Azkaban on occassion and he didn't want to see her in a place like that, particularly since the dementors had returned.

"You know I'll be there," he smiled, letting her guide him to the door. It wasn't something that he was going to miss. He'd known Ginny for a good portion of his life and she'd always been there for him when he needed it. It was about time he could do the same thing for her.

When she hugged him, Harry returned the embrace. As far as he was concerned, she didn't need to watch her actions around him. He might have been married but he was still the same Harry he'd been for the past 10 years. His friends meant a lot to him and they always would. "Night, Gin."
