Who: Samuel and Rose
What: First meeting
Where: Leaky Cauldron
When: Saturday June 21, 2002
Rating: E for everyone
Status: Closed/in progress

Rose found her way to the Leaky Cauldron at a quarter til one, hair askew and clothes dusty. She paused a moment in the doorway to redo her ponytail and brush off her shirt and jeans before finding a table in a corner.

It was a relief to sit down, even if her chair was a little wobbly. Rose had spent the first half of the morning in an awkward last breakfast at home, her mother keeping up a constant stream of advice and reminders while her father scowled at his eggs and reminded her to visit often. She wondered briefly how much more awkward the morning would have been if she'd told them anything about her assigned husband, but they likely wouldn't have let her leave the house (except possibly to flee the country) if she'd mentioned he had a child. And it wasn't something she wanted to discuss yet, not when her mind went into a screaming panic anytime her thoughts skittered across the idea and she hadn't even really talked with her fiance yet.

So Rose had spent the second half of the morning rearranging her meager collection of furniture in her new flat, trying to make her bedroom seem less tiny and the rest of the place less barren. It'd been a good distraction-- Rose had been dreaming of her own place since sixth year-- and she'd only noticed the time at half past noon. She'd apparated to a nearby alley, worried about the time, but Rose had managed to arrive early, leaving her entirely too much time to think.

Or it would have, had Rose not been as practical about avoiding unpleasant topics as she was in most of the rest of her life. Instead, she pulled out a book-- The Count of Monte Cristo, which she'd read before but had been the first thing she'd seen when she was heading out the door-- and settled down to wait.

Rose chewed and swallowed a bit of her sandwich. Whitstable would mean daily apparation instead of the leisurely walks to work she'd planned when buying her flat, but that was fine. She had her license, and the office was in Diagon Alley.

"Just signing the paperwork is fine with me." Rose wasn't sure what to think about the idea that their marriage might work out, but stranger things had happened, and better not to burn bridges, and half a dozen other cliches probably. "We'll need to find a time that's convenient for us both, then-- I'm assuming they want us to come into the Ministry. My work schedule's nine to five, but I'm free after that or on weekends, and I can probably get an afternoon off or something if it's an issue."

She toyed with her cup before taking a sip. Living arrangements and dates; it was a surprisingly short list of things to address for a wedding. It was probably longer when people actually wanted to get married. Which Rose did, just later on in life and to someone she'd met more than once beforehand. At least it wasn't Voldemort.

"Well, the 6th is a Saturday. It's cutting it pretty close, but at least that way you'd be free." He said quietly. He definitely could feel how distant they both were trying to keep themselves and that just wouldn't do. They'd be married and living together, it may not be ideal but they had to have something.

"I know this is less than ideal, Rose. But I'd at least like to be your friend," he said with a hopeful little smile.

"I can do the sixth." Rose was in the process of making yet another mental note when Sam's next comment caught up with her brain. She fidgeted, glancing down at her half empty cup in embarrassment. "Er... I don't actually know how to go about being friends on purpose. When I went to Hogwarts, I ended up in a Quidditch argument and..." Rose shrugged helplessly.

She'd known that making friends, socializing at all really, was her one glaring weak point, but it wasn't supposed to have mattered. Her job was the sort of quiet desk work that required about five spoken sentences a day, and she didn't particularly mind being alone. Getting to know people was supposed to be something she could limp through at her own pace, not sitting here with a near stranger and humiliating herself.

Sam could tell he'd embarrassed the girl. He smiled as he watched her fidget, bit his lip. He knew he shouldn't be amused, but really, with the situation as it was, he was having difficulty making himself not laugh.

With a cough, he took another sip of his tea, before he trusted himself to talk without laughing. "Luckily, outside of liking to play it myself, I'm not really the sort of crazy fan. I like Appleby and Kenmare, but I'm not going to jump down you're throat if you don't."

"Appleby's my favorite," Rose said before dropping into silence. Oh, why couldn't the Minister have decided polygamy was a good idea when he was going crazy? Then at least there would be someone else to carry on the conversation, and Rose could just lurk and add a couple of words every once and a while. Rose was fairly certain she was supposed to say something else, but there was nothing important left to talk about.

"So, ah, what do you do when you're not working?" There, that was small talk.

"Well, if Gabriel's sleeping, I like to read or sleep because he only sleeps in 3 hour stretches." He smiled.

Normally, Sam was the quiet one but she seemed so uncomfortable. He was just trying to be nice. They were going to be living together. He didn't want it to be a weird, just say hello if they pass in the hall sort of thing. Even if she couldn't meet him half way; he had no problems making the effort.

"How about you?"

If Gabriel wasn't sleeping through the night, then Rose would have to practice her silencing charms; she'd never been especially good at having them stay. Or maybe she could help a little. After she'd learned not to drop the baby.

"I read, I'm trying to grow pansies by my bed, and I write letters." And that was the end of another topic, which probably meant Rose was supposed to find something else to talk about. She decided to take another bite of her sandwich instead and start planning the easiest way to move her bookshelves. Sam could be responsible for finding something else to talk about.

"I've got a garden, you're welcome to plant things in it if you'd like. I'm a bit helpless with it. The only thing I can get to grow is basil for some strange reason," he smiled. She really wasn't much of a talker, it seemed. He wondered if she was always like this or if it was just because of him. Oh well, he'd just have to try harder.

Gabriel sneezed and Sam smiled down at him, "Bless you, little pea." He knew it was a bit of a weird nickname but when Gabriel was still swaddled, Sam always thought that he looked like a little pea pod. So the name just sort of stuck.

"So, do you have any brothers and/or sisters?" He asked Rose pleasantly.

"Thanks. I can grow other things if you want anything in particular." Rose tapped her teacup, considering possible plants. She'd never been extraordinary at Herbology, but she'd been better than average, and growing food might be a way to help pay her share until she could get the situation with the flat settled.

She ignored Sam's babbling at his son-- what was there to say, after all, and it wasn't polite to stare-- but glanced up from the rows of imaginary tomatoes she was arranging in her tea at his next question. "Only child," she replied. And then, because he was obviously trying and she should probably try too, Rose added, "My parents didn't think they could afford anymore. You?"

"What ever you'd like to plant is fine by me," he nodded. He'd bought the house for its backyard. The little garden was fenced to keep out the rabbits but other than that, it was sprawling. He figured Gabriel and possible siblings--though he wasn't sure that would happen now--could have lots of space to play in.

He smiled when she added that extra little bit. "So am I. I'd always wanted a little brother or sister though. Cousins don't quite cut it. I guess it was just never in the cards for my parents. Where are you from originally? London?"
