Who: Samuel and Rose
What: First meeting
Where: Leaky Cauldron
When: Saturday June 21, 2002
Rating: E for everyone
Status: Closed/in progress

Rose found her way to the Leaky Cauldron at a quarter til one, hair askew and clothes dusty. She paused a moment in the doorway to redo her ponytail and brush off her shirt and jeans before finding a table in a corner.

It was a relief to sit down, even if her chair was a little wobbly. Rose had spent the first half of the morning in an awkward last breakfast at home, her mother keeping up a constant stream of advice and reminders while her father scowled at his eggs and reminded her to visit often. She wondered briefly how much more awkward the morning would have been if she'd told them anything about her assigned husband, but they likely wouldn't have let her leave the house (except possibly to flee the country) if she'd mentioned he had a child. And it wasn't something she wanted to discuss yet, not when her mind went into a screaming panic anytime her thoughts skittered across the idea and she hadn't even really talked with her fiance yet.

So Rose had spent the second half of the morning rearranging her meager collection of furniture in her new flat, trying to make her bedroom seem less tiny and the rest of the place less barren. It'd been a good distraction-- Rose had been dreaming of her own place since sixth year-- and she'd only noticed the time at half past noon. She'd apparated to a nearby alley, worried about the time, but Rose had managed to arrive early, leaving her entirely too much time to think.

Or it would have, had Rose not been as practical about avoiding unpleasant topics as she was in most of the rest of her life. Instead, she pulled out a book-- The Count of Monte Cristo, which she'd read before but had been the first thing she'd seen when she was heading out the door-- and settled down to wait.

"Thanks. I can grow other things if you want anything in particular." Rose tapped her teacup, considering possible plants. She'd never been extraordinary at Herbology, but she'd been better than average, and growing food might be a way to help pay her share until she could get the situation with the flat settled.

She ignored Sam's babbling at his son-- what was there to say, after all, and it wasn't polite to stare-- but glanced up from the rows of imaginary tomatoes she was arranging in her tea at his next question. "Only child," she replied. And then, because he was obviously trying and she should probably try too, Rose added, "My parents didn't think they could afford anymore. You?"

"What ever you'd like to plant is fine by me," he nodded. He'd bought the house for its backyard. The little garden was fenced to keep out the rabbits but other than that, it was sprawling. He figured Gabriel and possible siblings--though he wasn't sure that would happen now--could have lots of space to play in.

He smiled when she added that extra little bit. "So am I. I'd always wanted a little brother or sister though. Cousins don't quite cut it. I guess it was just never in the cards for my parents. Where are you from originally? London?"
