I... I'm sorry. I don't know if I should have hidden that or not. I didn't think you were ready yet, but I didn't want to lie to you.

Pretty much everyone here is fake, or was fake. It's just--It's not important now, okay? You're real now and you're here and that's what matters. And you can change things. You can decide who you're going to be now.

But I'm...I'm the figment of some man's imagination! I'm...how can I live knowing that? I don't...I'm not feeling well...

Just.. try to relax, I guess. Lie down for a while.

I'll be in my room.

What if he tries to take my books?

Can I go?

Think of it this way. Is being fictional all that bad? If I found out I were fictional, I'd probably want to find my creator and strangle him for giving me a shitty life instead of a good one.

But uh... Whoa. I read that book. And... I kinda know you. Sorta.

You're lucky you're here, dude. Really lucky. I mean, from what I remember of it? Your life outside of this reality kinda sucked goat balls.

You're real now, right?

I don't see how life away from Big Brother...makes me lucky. I don't know anything about this world. There is no real order and it's just...

Scary.

Well, there still is a Big Brother, man, they're just a lot less strict about things than what you're used to.

It's controlled chaos. People have freedom of expression. That's something that so many take for granted. I mean, hey, you can say whatever you want, wear whatever you want... Think of things however you like! That's pretty awesome, actually.

Haven't you ever wanted to express yourself in a way that went outside of Big Brother's rules?

Insanity is relative.
What one person considers insane, another might consider as brilliance. When Leonardo Di Vinci lived, people thought he was crazy for his ideas of a flying machine. And if it weren't for his designs of one, the Wright brothers would have never made their own. They were also considered crazy. But now we've got airplanes due to their brilliance.
People thought Elvis was perverse and blasphemous, but he revolutionized music... something you probably know nothing about, actually.

Point is this, people who are considered crazy might make an impact on the world in a way that makes the world better.

By the way, my name's Hyde. Pleasure to meet you.

The world you came from impacted a lot of people who read about it. It showed us that it's not only a slippery slope between our own governments (Communism, especially) and the totalitarian Big Brother you lived under, but that it's GREAT to have freedom of expression and the ability to be as freaky as you want to be.

You were already a great influence to a lot of us, you just don't know it. Your reality, even if it's fictional to others? Is just as important to us as it is to you. That book makes up a great deal of the reason I believe what I believe.

I'm Winston but you appear to already know that.

I...was it really that...impacting? I still don't understand. 1984 and all the years preceding it were not like what I lived through?

[info]modernkerouac
2008-04-14 01:27 am UTC (link)
I don't know, I came here from 1981. It wasn't like that, though, from what I remember. People were still able to choose. And from what I've been told by others, it wasn't like 1984.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]isofthedead
2008-04-14 01:28 am UTC (link)
And that's because of the book that was written? That things were okay?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]modernkerouac
2008-04-14 01:38 am UTC (link)
It might have been due to that, in part. We as a society wouldn't stand for a lifestyle like that of your reality, mostly because we aren't sheep, we're people with our own minds, own opinions, and ultimately our own choices on what we want to do. What happened with your world was something nobody wanted to see happen in ours.

But that was just MY reality. It could be different in this one, but the fact of the matter is that what happened to you personally was something that we learned from not just as individuals, but as an entire world.

Anyone who's read that book knows that it's something not to live up to, but to fear.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]isofthedead
2008-04-14 01:43 am UTC (link)
Indeed. Though we weren't...sheep. Not really. Our country was under duress before Big Brother took over. They helped regulate things. Helped people...

It wasn't...all bad. People were taken care of as long as they followed the rules. As long as they loved Big Brother. Here, though, there are so many people with homes or jobs or food...and the government does nothing.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

The government only intervenes when it's called upon to do so. There's kids who were in the system like me who learned exactly how the government works because we tested the limits. I know exactly when enough is too much, and when the government will get involved. My whole childhood was screwed up due to irresponsible people around me, and the government tried placing me in foster care. That didn't fly. I found my own foster family.

In any case, people without homes can get homes if they ask, people can get food if they ask for food, and people without money can get financial assistance. It's called Welfare. A lot of people are just too proud to get it because they think it's a blow to them as a person. Some people just don't know how to do it.

There are government programs in place, but a person has to ask for assistance before they get it. Even then, sometimes they fall through the cracks because OUR Big Brother doesn't want to help them. Rather see them starve or freeze to death than see them fulfill a rich life.

What I'm trying to say is yeah, so our government isn't perfect, but it's not all-seeing or all-encompassing, either.

I suggest doing some research into the world you're in now, Winston. It's not as chaotic as you might think, and it sure as hell isn't scarier than what you've already lived.

You might be happy to find yourself in this world after a while. I'm sure it's MASSIVE culture shock for you to be here, but hell, it might just help you be your own man again.

Hey, there's schools that you could actually gain more than just knowledge for your research. It might even help you integrate better here.

Alright. Well, there's online courses and stuff, too.

Heh, I just realized I'm being pretty damn nice to someone I've never met before, just because I read a book about you. Let me just say that I was rooting for you the whole time, man.

Wait - Is she Julia's daughter? Because that'd be awesome.

Well, that's a weird turn of events.

And kind of tragic. Sorry to hear about that, man. Well, I better get going. I have English Lit homework staring me in the face and I need something to eat.

Hey, if you need anything, let me know, alright? My number is [phone] and I'm pretty okay if you just want to talk or something. I may not be the nicest guy on earth but hell, if you can put up with me schooling you this long, I'm sure you'll be able to deal with me. If you have any questions about anything, I'll try and help.
