So, I have discovered something that makes this whole crazy London and this whole strange world worth staying in.

I have discovered chocolate wine.

Chocolate orange wine, really, and it's more of an alcoholic chocolate syrup than anything, but it's fantastic with a bit of soda water, or even better, over ice cream.

And ice cream is something else I've just discovered! I suppose I can stay here for a while longer at least.

Fascinating. I'm not sure I can imagine that tasting very pleasant, but heaven knows I've downed worse things in a pinch.

Oh so have I. Aren't a proper Londoner if you haven't.

I'm Marian by the by.

Amber Dunharrow. A pleasure, my dear, a distinct pleasure.

Are you from here, then?

Oh yes, though not here exactly. My own London is quite a bit older.

Timejumper. Spectacular! Funny thing, this world here... seems the good old British Empire's a great deal smaller. I think this might be my time, but it's nothing like my world.

When, then, are you from?

Honestly I'd have preferred to stay in the same time and a different place, than a different time and the same place. It's... jarring. Though I can wear trousers without getting stared at, which is nice.

And I'm not entirely sure of the year, but apparently it's been some time.

I don't particularly care one way or another. This isn't my first time seeing a world rewritten around me.

Which is fine.

You know what jarring is really great for?

Preserving fruit.

Quite true.

Where is it you've ended up? And how long have you been here?

England Proper, a week or two I suppose. I haven't been paying much attention, to be honest, but the flying's been good. Frankly all that's changed about my life is...

...uh...

...well, frankly, nothing.

... Flying?

Indeed.

I fly a plane.

A small one, but so long as the weather permits, she's my escape from anything but myself.

I'm afraid I haven't any idea what that is.

Have you been here long enough to note the large, often noisy, clearly not living objects that pass through the sky on occasion?

I... suppose I just hadn't noticed.

I'm not outside much, and when I am whoever I was before tends to ignore things that she took for granted. If that makes any sense. I knew about crosswalks and things like that without ever having seen them.

You've become the person you've replaced?

Is that... usual, I wonder?

Perhaps you would recognize a plane if you saw it, then...

I don't know that I've become her really, but when things become ... well, confusing I suppose, and badly so, I remember things that I've no business knowing, and I can only assume they're her memories.

I'm not making much sense am I?

You're making a great deal of sense. At the very least, it's a situation I can relate to.

Well that's good to know at least.

I don't mind it so much, really. The remembering that is, it makes things easier in this whole confusing mess.

It helps. The mind's madness translates itself strangely. The way a man with amnesia knows the name of the appletree but cannot recall either love or hate for its fruit...

I noticed that every time, though. But perhaps I am hyperaware for other reasons.

You've somehow managed to fall into other times or places before now?

Sort of.

About five years ago, I woke up in a hospital bed with no memory of who I was. I still don't know. I know what the government spent three years teaching me, but it's someone else's story told through someone else's eyes. I don't believe I ever did those things.

Unfortunately, I seem to look exactly like the person who did...

Ah, I see. That... can't have been easy.

Don't know that I've ever looked like someone else. Don't know that I'd want to, despite how entertaining it could be to have a twin to blame things on.

Considering how things were going before I came here?

I wasn't so good at doing things right. Except perhaps revenge, but someone else got to that before I did. The bastard.

Well, back home, as far as the meat pie business went, there was me, and there was Lovett. The bint.

Things were going quite well for myself, given as how Lovett couldn't bake a pie to save her life and I'd come up with something new and groundbreaking.

Then her boarder came along and it all went to hell. Don't know what the hell she was doing, but people were swarming her shop in droves put me right out of business she did.

Goodness. Little did I know the business of baking was so brimming with drama. This world must seem positively dull by comparison...

Well, it was at the time, it's rather revolutionary how it works now.

I mean, we don't even bake the pies to sell them! They're frozen and sent out to regular shopping markets and people buy them there to bake at home!

...well I wouldn't know anything about that. I've lived on mostly canned soup and pancakes for two years, with occasional meals provided by friendly folks when the weather got bad.

I do like pie, though.

Maybe I don't want to know.

When do you want me?
