I feel cut off here. The Fade's so silent, so... wrong.

I can't be the only one who's noticed that, right? I know I'm not exactly a 'regular' mage, but... still.

Edit: Actually, whilst I'm talking about the Fade... there's a Witch of the Wilds around here called Morrigan, isn't there? Just have to check.

She's one of the most powerful mages I've ever known. She should be able to work something out.

Most stories have grains of truth to them. In the case of the Old Gods, it's true that they slumber underground, at very least... and apparently, they sing, and that's what attracts the darkspawn. It must be an amazing thing to hear.

Singing? Actual singing? That's...so hard to imagine. Darkspawn and music...they're complete opposites to my mind. Though perhaps that's what would draw them.

I'm sorry.. This entire conversation is making me re-examine a lot of things I've taken for granted, I think. Which isn't bad, but...I'm used to think of darkspawn as evil, nothing else, but if they can be attracted by singing, wouldn't that be a spark of...well, something? And Old Gods slumbering underground...I've always believed stories of the Maker or the Creators were just stories people told themselves, I've never understood why, and you say the Old Gods at least are real, and you say it as though you have reason to know.

The song of an Old God...I can't imagine what that would be.

My father once said that there are darkspawn out there that are created different, that can talk. They describe the song as one of the purest sounds ever... but the moment they get close, they corrupt it.

It's almost like it's mocking them, somehow.

...

That's...that's just horrible.

...I never imagined I'd feel pity for darkspawn, but...

I suppose it is... I think the majority of darkspawn are mindless, only attracted by the sound, but the smarter ones - the ones that aren't insane - probably regret every time they corrupt one.

If there is a Maker out there, and he's the one who created the darkspawn and imprisoned the Old Gods, he has a terrible sense of humour.

Darkspawn that aren't crazed, hungry things spreading the Blight wherever they go...or worse, that spread the Blight but know and regret it and can't stop it...

For the first time in my life I wish I weren't an atheist. I want something to swear by.

How do you know about all this?

My father's a Grey Warden. The Warden, the one that saved Ferelden... he encountered a lot of things that most people rarely run into. There was a talking darkspawn that called itself the Architect, one who didn't want Blights and destruction, and it taught him about things like this.

He told me about it when I was young. I was a very curious child.

The Hero...yes, I've heard of him. In my world he died fighting the Archdemon. But I've met others from other worlds who lived, though they haven't said how. Though from what little I have heard, "things that people rarely run into" doesn't begin to cover it.

A darkspawn who doesn't want destruction...I never would have thought it possible.

I'm sorry, I juse realized, I hadn't even introduced myself. My name is Dar. I've always been curious too; I hope you don't mind I've been asking you all this.

Neither did he, until he met it. The Architect even helped him defeat a Broodmother gone mad and then just... vanished away. Probably went to try and help the rest of his kind be free of the Old God's songs.

I'm Aedan, and I don't mind the curiosity at all. We might as well make the most of being here and learn all we can, right?

I'm not sure if I find it comforting or tragic that there's a talking, ethical darkspawn out there trying to help the others. It was easier when I could just hate them all. I can't say I'm very proud of myself for feeling like that.

Yes, I feel the same. It's good to meet you, Aedan, even if all this is difficult to learn. I hope whatever your power is, you can get it under control. If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know? I feel I owe you something for this conversation, somehow.

You don't really owe me anything... I'll be sure to ask for you if I can think of anything you can help me with, though.

I think I do. You've taught me something I didn't know. Not just about darkspawn but about myself. That's...important, at least to me. Though I'm going to need to think about it for a long time, I suspect.

Can I consider you a friend, anyway?

If you ever want to talk about it more, just ask. I'm always willing to listen.

Of course you can. I think in a place like this, we need friends more than ever.

I will. Thank you.

And yes, we do.
