I'm weirdly wistful for home. I know the place sucked, and I'd actually rather watch it destroy itself from far, far away, but y'know. You grow up in a place, and you get used to it, it's only natural that you feel a small amount of... I dunno. Attachment.

Anyone else feel that way?

I do, actually. I missed my home badly for a long time, confused and frankly lost. But I've since found my niche here, and I count myself happy ... and yet somehow, I miss China. Don't miss some of the silly decisions I made, but I miss the locale, and the scene.

I hear you on both counts. Being here, in this place and time has really brought a lot of contentment for me that I never had back home. People here seem a lot more open-minded, for one, and secondly, they're not err... you know. Stupid.

I've risen to heights I didn't believe possible, amidst people I thought were too kind to exist. But I've still not been back to China. I suppose I really ought to take my lady friend. I'm glad you've found a measure of happiness, sir, but you also oughtn't feel bad about missing your home. It's where you grew up.

You really should get to China. I hear there's lots of really interesting things there, and not just of the paranormal variety. I haven't been there yet, myself, but I was planning on going there sometime this summer.

I actually should feel pretty bad, the place was basically hell on earth, but I really don't want to get into it.

Oh, hey, sorry, I haven't made my introductions. I'm Dib.

I spent several years in Guangzhou, in Canton, but I wasn't permitted to leave the city for too long. I was able to go into the mountains a few times, but that's all. Even going back nowadays wouldn't be quite the same - I can tell you, I suppose, that I was there nigh on two hundred years ago - but it would still be nice to return, especially with pleasant company.

Oh wow, you're on the other end of the scale from me. I'm from about 200 years in the future, give or take. I'm sure it would be really different now, yeah. I mean, with technology and all that.

I daresay it would be. I came from a time of historical transition, and it's certainly not the same even in England. My name is Ariel, by the way; it's a pleasure.

Likewise.

Yeah, and it only gets more technologically dependent as time goes on. I mean, even from where I was, this is pretty primitive. I can't even imagine a world without electricity and cars and stuff. I don't even know how that would work.

I suppose traveling for you was a lot more of an adventure, though. Having to do things without trains or cars or planes, or any of that. Not even pointing out the portkey thing. It probably was a lot more fulfilling that way, too. Like you actually accomplished something by traveling.

Ha. When I arrived here I was afraid of motorcars. They moved at a speed I still find somewhat jarring. I did most of my travelling by sailing ship, steam ship and the occasional donkey cart. The idea that one could go from point A to point B in less than a day is mindboggling to me, let alone getting there in an instant.

Oh, so if I told you I reverse-engineered a spaceship and have been to Venus, you'd probably get weirded out by that a little, huh?

I mean, that's not the norm even by my reality's standards, I was in kind of a unique position to do so. Interstellar travel was a long ways away even in my reality, except for when you factor in alien technology that most people didn't even know existed. But yeah, I can totally understand. I personally prefer walking places, but you can't walk to say, Romania, from near the great lakes in the USA.

Up until recently, I had no idea what a spaceship was, so yes, it'd be cause for confusion. The stars were forever a mystery in my time. And I'm very fond of walking, but as you say, one's endurance is limited. I used to walk all over Bulgaria when I lived there, but that was rather a special case.

Bulgaria? Man, that place is just rife with stories that catch my attention. Vampires, demons, even the fire dancers who go into a spiritual trance before leaping over the flames of a bonfire.

And how was it special for you?

Sinners and demons. It worked out in the end, but for ages I chalked up living there as the most foolish thing I'd ever done.

I'm sorry to hear that. But you pulled out of it pretty all right, it seems. Could be worse, right?

You were around when things were more fresh, more prevalent. I um. I know it might sound odd, but would you be interested in telling me about some of the things you saw there? I'm a researcher, and well, there's a lot to be said for someone who's done a lot of traveling in a time when the fantastic was pretty commonplace.

I don't entirely know what you mean by 'the fantastic', but I have no problem with discussing my first life, so to speak. Or at least pieces of it. May I ask what you research precisely?

I'm a paranormal investigator. I research cryptids, spirits, and alien life, specifically, though that kind of covers everything except for the super-nasty stuff that I kinda leave to the Hunters and priest.

Interesting. My expertise is primarily in demonology, and I'm not sure that counts as 'paranormal', but I've no objection to telling you what I can.

Oh, it counts, I just don't personally investigate those things first-hand. I know my limits and that would be demons and entire alien armies. Single aliens, maybe a good half-dozen if I'm having a good day, yeah, no problem. Full armies? Not gunna happen. Same goes with demons. You mess with one of 'em, another one's going to notice and start slapping you around. Seen it happen too many times to people I know, I'm not about to start messing around with that crap.

But I love hearing about it!

It's rather a relief to me when people have that sort of good sense. And most of it's utterly harmless to tell, unless you're hiding alchemical experience under your glasses.

Then I would be happy to meet with you sometime and discuss this. I have a bit of a busy schedule, but I'm sure there'll be sometime soon when I won't have duties to attend to.

Whenever you're free, provided it's not next week pretty much at all. My partner and I are going to be in Romania, on an investigation.

I have a little sister who is the very definition of that sentiment, so yeah, no ignoring the lady friend. You don't want to find yourself in a nightmare realm from which there is no awakening.

Let me speak to Iku and I'll leave you a note.
