Did I create some... some sort of bridge to the eleventh dimension? M-Theory is actually correct?

Since I haven't seen any of my friends sporting Mirror beards, I can assume the anthropic principal applies. That's a relief.

The eleventh dimension?

how many are there?

You might want to look at this. It's quite bright. [website]

That depends on who you ask. If the M-Theorists are right, which seems likely, eleven. Unless you mean to ask how many parallel universes there are, in which case one would assume, at this point, the answer is an infinite number.

What a poorly designed website! I could design a better interface in my sleep! Sure, there's something to be said for inventiveness, but you can't completely throw out heuristics! Who do they expect to actually read something like that?

Apparently, they expect you to read it, if you wish to know what's going on, and why you're here. While I agree it's a bit...gaudy, it does get its point across. There may be other methodologies, but that seems to be the preferred way of telling people what's going on.

So yes. I'm Melpomene. Welcome to the world. I don't know if it has a name...

I've already established that I know more about what's going on than someone who would choose tangerine orange as a background color for a website. While I specialize in heterotic string theory, I know enough of M-theory to connect the dots, so to speak.

Oh, named after the Greek muse of Singing. I'm Sheldon Cooper.

Actually, while my name means "She who chants" or "The one who is melodious" I'm actually the Greek Muse of Tragedy.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

Actually, that's interesting, because while she's now known as the Muse of Tragedy and depicted holding the tragic mask, she was originally known as the Muse of Singing. It wasn't until later that she became the Muse of Tragedy.

Well, Yes. That's quite true. But that's akin to me saying "Oh, wow... it's Sheldon Cooper, the grade school student!"

Would you prefer to be known as what you were, or what you are?

True, it is most common to refer to her as what she's now known, but when discussing the origin of one's namesake, it seems more fitting to look at the initial meaning. Otherwise most of us would be named after 'Some Dead Guy.'

You do have a valid point. It's customary to refer to the aspects a namesake is best known for. However, it's logical to assume that you're already familiar with the mythological figure that you're named after and I don't have to point out the obvious, which in turn gives us room to 'bond' over the less commonly known facts about her. A little tête-à-tête, if you will.

I... She... Well. Yes. I suppose we can, in fact bond over that. And while I hesitate to suggest I might be a tad more knowledgeable in obscure muse trivia, I will admit your information is quite good, and it's nice to see someone looks beyond the very surface of such things.

Well, I wouldn't claim to be an expert on muses specifically.

Or rather, eleven times infinity. Which is, admittedly, still infinite, it's just not the same infinite. That said, physics don't stay the same from universe to universe, so that may not actually be true. Presumably, if there really are infinite universes, then there are also going to be an infinite amount of universes where physics are exactly the same, therefore there are an infinite number of dimensions. However, there are also universes containing only four or six or nine dimensions. There might even be a way of forming a negative dimension in some way our minds can't process, meaning that, theoretically, the number of dimensions could average out to zero.

Here, though, there's magic and mutants and mysticism, so you're going to be confused.

Ha. Are you even listening to yourself? The whole point of string theory is to have a universal explanation for reality and quantum mechanics. Typical rookie mistake.

True, but you're not in the same universe anymore. And given that we occupy what can safely be called a multiverse, a universal theory is no longer the ideal.

I don't see how that nullifies the point. If string theory can postulate the existence of other universes, being in one hardly invalidates the theory.

Because it assumes that physics are going to be identical from universe to universe, or at the very least that the physics of other universes have no way of interfering with the one you currently occupy, which is demonstrably untrue.

Granted, I haven't quite come up with a hypothesis for the vortex that doesn't reference the Q Continuum, but I don't see a reason to assume the physics here are any different than my 'home universe', as it were.

This one is occupied with people who fly, who can cast magic, who can fundamentally alter the nature of reality on a whim, and who get turned into mutants because of spider bites.

Admittedly, that's not too unusual where I come from, but a lot of people seem surprised by it. I dunno, I can't really imagine a childhood where Captain America doesn't show up in history books, but what do I know?

Oh, I'm rude. Handsome, but rude. I'm Peter Parker.

I'm just glad you don't look like Tobey Maguire. Those movies were a blaspheme to the Spiderm.. Eee.

Oh, don't get me started on that jackhole. They made that movie? I got zip. Zilch. And I was in the movie! They filmed a scene where I was fighting a guy and sold it as a documentary. Made a bundle. Did I see any of those spider-dollars? Hell to the no. Listen. If you ever come across Tobey Maguire on the street? Punch him in the testicles.

I was just talking about the M-Theory the other day! In fact, that's how I asked God to come to my wedding next month. If you look back a week or so, you'll see what I did there.

Great to know someone else knows anything whatsoever about quantum theories. Which means someone's sat through the same boring crap I did. Hi. I'm Cassidy Turner, I'm less a scientist and more a person who was made to go to college. And you're in a separate reality where God exists, but didn't create the world in which we live. I was born here about half a year ago, and grew up and then got sent back in time in the same kind of Vortex by which you were brought here.

Mind you, you probably have read the sparkly horror which is the website, so you don't have to have me tell you that there's no definitive way back. Just be glad you exist here and now.

Boring crap? String theory is the most exciting thing to happen to science since... Well, arguably ever. Integrating general relativity and quantum mechanics... How is that boring?

I only took Quantum because I wanted to finish college, and they don't give out diplomas for snowboarding. I make better money with boarding than I ever would as a scientist, and I'm happier there.

Anyway, I'm not going to say that you're wrong. Science is awesome. It's the classes that suck.
