It's very different here than it is at home, and different from what I was taught it was like here.

I'm not sure yet whether these differences are good or bad, though I'd believe towards the good because I'd like to believe that people are inherently good, though some of them try very hard not to believe it, even of themselves. Just human nature I guess.

What's your story? Where were you before, and what would you be doing if you were still there now?

Strange, that this place would take you from where you were at peace. From what I've seen so far it takes people who need a change for the better.

I'm guessing I hadn't served my purpose yet. They didn't want to let me go through with it all. I remember that. But I told the man- Wednesday. I told him I would do it, and I drank his mead, so I did it.

Traditions to uphold, pacts to be kept. Everything would fall apart otherwise.

You sound like a man with a story. Everyone's got one of course, but yours sounds somewhat more involved than most people allow themselves.

You sound like you have one yourself.

But yes, I had one. I only remember the larger details, though. Something went wrong, on my way back. Or on my way there. I lost things. A lot of things. So much, I couldn't even tell you what was gone.

I haven't got much of a story of my own yet, just knowing a history that hasn't happened yet, may never happen. It's... oddly humbling, really.

Best way to start fresh isn't it? Lose everything from before.

Sounds like it would be. I knew the feeling, with the men that I was working with. So much going on, that you can't stop or change or understand, and you just have to move with it.

There was something important, though. A storm coming. The dreams have started up again, and I can't help but get the feeling I'm still expected to do something; I haven't lost everything, just the answers I thought I was getting.

Sometimes that's the best way to live a story, throw yourself into it with your whole heart, look back on it later to sort things out into some kind of order.

Sounds like someone's already written your story for you, you just don't have all the pages yourself.

I agree. It's just hard, knowing there's a plot I'm not seeing- like the choices are made for you, and no matter what you do, things are going to bend back on themselves to finish what they started.

I think that's true. I didn't have a lot of the information to start with. The men I was working for, weren't who they- well, they never said who they were. That was important. Their names. My name. They meant something.

Now I'm just Shadow, again.

Good a name as any. I got called Book because it's the first word I learned, at least the first one I said aloud.

Still have the name my mother gave me, and the title given to me by the abbey, but Book works best, I like to think it's my real name.

It's nice to meet you, Book.

And I understand that, I guess. But for them, some of them, their name was all they had left. It was what gave him his power, why they killed him. Wednesday...

Odin. I don't know why I didn't think to do that* before. He was Odin, and they hung me from the tree because that's how the story went.

Sometimes you just have to have faith in the story, know that it'll bring itself around.

Sounds like you've been through a lot for one man.

That I know. It's just how things come back to me sometimes, that's troubling. Still wish I could remember half the tricks Mad Sweeny showed me. Drunk of a man, but he had something to him.

I guess so. But most of the time it didn't feel like I was really doing anything. I was just a means, to the end they were trying to make happen. Sort of feels the same way with this place.

That kind of thing usually comes back right when you need it most. I don't rightly remember half of the things I learned early on at the Abbey, not until I need them. Just the way the human mind works.
