It's very different here than it is at home, and different from what I was taught it was like here.

I'm not sure yet whether these differences are good or bad, though I'd believe towards the good because I'd like to believe that people are inherently good, though some of them try very hard not to believe it, even of themselves. Just human nature I guess.

What's your story? Where were you before, and what would you be doing if you were still there now?

Exactly. That was why Candy and I had to fight - Mater Motley wishes to obliterate the Light. You can't have one without the other.

Exactly, balance in all things. Can't have a shadow without a light to cast it.

Exactly. You understand. I'm Princess Boa.

I'm Candy.

It's good to meet you both. I'm Book.

It's nice to meet you too, Book. What about you?

Me? Shepherd fresh out of the abbey, on my second year of a twelve year mission. Making my own way in the 'Verse, helping where I can, learning by watching and listening to those who need to talk.

Shepherd? Religious? But you're so young.

No younger than the other Shepherds who leave the abbey.

And religion of a sort, no particular scripture, none of them survived that long intact. We have our code though, and that's enough.

Where I'm from, the men in the church tend to not be my age.

That's actually really nice. It leaves no room for fighting over tiny things that are different and don't matter anyway.

Ah, that seems to be what I hear a lot. Where I'm from boys are given into the abbey's care when they're fairly young, five or six, and sent off on their missions when they're eighteen. I was left on the abbey steps as an infant, so I was there longer than most of the other boys.

And folk are too widespread and far flung for that kind of fighting to take hold, sure there's still some sects on the fringe that are fanatical, but for the most part folk fight over things that matter.

There's not much to fight for. Everything to live for, nothing to die for, few things to fight for.

Maybe not here. No, definitely not here, but where I'm from? Folk have to fight just to live another day. It's a harsh 'verse. Some have it better than others, same as anywhere, but nothing's perfect.

The Abarat is very, very different from any world I've ever been in. I grew up in a world like this, but managed to travel there, and - I miss it. But the fighting. That, I don't miss. Nobody needs to die for me here.

I can see how that'd be a problem. Or at least strange enough to put a person off.

Never been one to think that dying for anybody's the best use of my life. Rather live for them.

So you re-wrote their history simply by being there?

I suppose you're right. The Fantomaya said it was my destiny, because Princess Boa's soul is in me. She's destined to save the Abarat. So I had to come.

It's just... everyone I've met there but perhaps three people has died. It's like I was cursed.

It's been my experience that curses are just circumstances, coincidences, and a little bit of paranoia.

Not saying they don't exist of course, they might, just haven't run across one yet that didn't have an explanation.

It's because Princess Boa was sort of the champion of the Light, and those that died were casualties in a war. It's not... really my fault, but they were my friends. It might as well be. It feels that way.

I'm not going to tell you not to feel responsible, I'm sure you've got that from everyone.

I'm going to ask though: Do you feel it could have been any other way?

[info]toitshour

Not really. The Abarat does need saving. I should be there even now.

From what I've seen of this place, storms show up right when people need them, whether they realize it at the time or not.

Might be there's something here you're supposed to learn that'll help you when you get back. Just have to have faith.

I think I had to find love to have faith in anything worth living for. I hated everything before the Abarat, and watching people die left me sort of downtrodden.
