Who: Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley.
What: Ron pays Hermione a little visit at the Library.
Where: Library.
When: Evening
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete.
Hermione really was in a weird mood. After her conversation with Ginny the other night she couldn't help but let those thoughts and emotions take control. Being in a relationship was something new and completely frightening to her. This was something she could truly fail at. What if she need up not being what Ron had really wanted? Logically she knew that she was more than just Ron. That if she and Ron didn't work out that there was a reason and she would continue on with her life, knowing that at least she tried. It was all such a strange line of thought. She and Ron had hardly been dating a week and she was already contemplating all sorts of things. Things she clearly had no reason to be thinking about.

Nestled back in the farthest corner at her favorite table she closed her journal. She did not need to be looking at that thing. She had come to the library to get things done. She'd been behind in her work and this was a perfect chance for her to get caught up. Ron, once again, had been her source of distraction. The last thing Hermione had wanted to do was fight with him, but it seemed that wasn't the plan for the day. Sighing quietly she rested back in her chair and pulled those out of control locks up into a tight bun. Her hair was frustrating her! Constantly falling into her face and Hermione had enough frustrations.

It was time to get back to work! Taking her quill in hand she began to chew lightly on the end. Her free hand flipped through the book of centaurs, trying to find exactly the thing she was looking for.

Something seemed to have made Hermione calm down. Ron was too daft to realize that it had been him, but he was glad for it all the same. He stuck the small box back into his coat pocket and righted his chair. He waited impatiently for the witch to return, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. He was just going to wait like a good little boy for her to put her books away and then they could go home. Yes. A glance at his watch told him that they were safe to re-enter their homes now, something others were obviously noticing as well. The crowd in the library began to thin as people drifted out the door or apparated home. Ron wasn't bitter at all that they hadn't let him and Harry help with the searches. Just because he hadn't passed his test yet. His lip twitched. Not bitter at all.

But he was tired of waiting. Hermione was taking forever to put her hundreds of thousands of books away and she seemed so sad, so confused, so ... something. He didn't know what she was suddenly so insecure but he didn't want her to feel that way anymore. Ron took off, ducking down the aisles quickly until he spotted Hermione reaching up to put a book on a higher shelf. Her back was to him. Ron glanced around to see if anyone was near them before sneaking up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist.

"It's only you, I promise. Hermione, it's always been only you." Ron whispered quietly into her ear. It was so much easier to say those things when he wasn't actually facing her.

Hermione knew she was taking a long time, but it had sort of been on purpose. As excited as she was that Ron was willing to talk to her the thought was terrifying. Hermione hardly made any sense. Finally getting wha one wants can be a bit unbalancing. As she wandered down the isles she considered the different ways that this conversation could go. Would they just always argue about things like this? Would they get over this? Would she get over this? Ultimately she knew that she could, or at least she hoped that she could. No, she had to tell herself she could. She would not fail at this.

Fingers were pushing the final book into it's slot, the knots in her stomach multiplying. It was almost time. And just as her feet came back into complete contact with the floor she felt his arms go around her. She squeaked, not expecting him. For a moment she felt the urge to call out a curse even though she didn't have her wand in hand.

But then there it was. That sweet voice that caused shivers to run over her body. Her own arms rested over his, lacing her fingers with his. The weight that was lifted from her shoulders felt enormous. Hermione let her body relax into his. "Truly?" She asked in an almost inaudible voice.

This was certainly a start.

Ron had been afraid that Hermione would be startled by him, or even worse, mad at him again. But then her fingers had entwined with his and she leaned back into him. Ron always felt like things were going to be okay when she was this close to him. Funny, it hadn't happened very often at all, but that didn't mean it didn't have a huge effect on him. He loved the way she felt in his arms. Small, fragile, like he was supposed to take care of her and she actually trusted him to do it.

Ron kissed Hermione just behind her ear, keeping his lips close enough for him to keep whispering. "You should know that by now," Ron scolded, his face splitting into a grin. But then, she was in such a strange, fragile state right now, he wondered if he shouldn't just behave himself. "Truly," he corrected himself. "I mean it. Please believe me."

He wouldn't dare admit it, not now and maybe not ever, but Ron, with his girlfriend pressed firmly against the front of his body, her sweet-smelling hair right underneath his nose, her soft fingers laced with his, was starting to develop a new Hermione fantasy. This one involved the library, in between the stacks when no one was looking. Oh Merlin, maybe Hermione was right. Maybe he couldn't go more than five seconds without thinking about sex. But he was thinking about her! Why did she seem to think he wouldn't be? He hadn't even gone all the way with her yet; there were still plenty of things left for him to be thinking about. Maybe he could tell her what he was thinking right now and then she'd -- no, no, he couldn't do that. Ron began to fidget.

"D'you, err, want to go home now?"

All Hermione had ever really wanted was some confirmation. Something verbal. That was the type of person she was. She needed the first piece of information to be backed by several other pieces of information. She needed that reinforcement. Nothing could be proven, in her eyes, without the proper facts to back it up.

The truth was she was made for him. Just as she had always felt that he was made for her. Ron made her feel safe and wanted. It was slightly ironic. As wanted as she felt they were still having this arguement. The sheer fact that it might be taken away from her was earth shattering. Another chill was sent down her spine. Hermione would never really tell anyone, but if she could be like this with him always she would. The feeling of his body against hers was more comforting thatn anything she had ever felt before. Her head turned in the direction he was whispering and she nodded. "I do trust you, Ron. I always have." Nothing would change her trust in him.

It was probably for the better, at least for now, that Ron didn't bring up his little fantasy. One could never say what the future might bring, but for the time being Hermione was already panicing. It was rather thoughtful of him to pass that little thought up. For the time being. She sensed him become a bit antsy, but she wasn't ready to let go just yet. Without really taking her body from his she turned quickly, throwing her arms around his neck. Standing on her tippy toes she buried her face in his neck. "I hope you know just how much you mean to me." Her fingers began to play against the nap of his neck. "I want us to go home."

Ron knew he didn't always say the right thing, and it was even rarer that he did the right thing, but he was trying harder with Hermione now than he ever had with anything before. He didn't care anymore how many fights they got into or how often she got mad at him. As far as he was concerned, it was all worth it if it meant he got to do this, to hold her, to have her throw herself around his neck and cling to him the way she was suddenly doing. Ron stroked Hermione's hair, cuddling her closer to himself in what was probably a very unmanly gesture.

His breath caught in his throat. Sometimes it worried him that he didn't really know what he meant to Hermione, and sometimes it worried him that he did. Maybe he couldn't be everything she needed him to be, and that was a horrifying thought. Or ... maybe he could. That was sort of scary as well. He just knew he didn't want to let her go.

Small red hairs on the back of Ron's neck began to stand up as Hermione's fingers danced across them. He was almost dizzy with the notion of it being his home. It wasn't, not literally, but the words 'us' and 'home' were very powerful. "Let's go," Ron agreed quietly.

Fighting was just part of their dynamic. It made them who they were in a strange way. It wasn't everything for them, but it was a part of them and it would never go away. And just as Ron would do anything to be this close to her she would do the same for him. How had she gone so lon without being able to do something as simple as this?

Releasing her hold a bit she leaned back, placing a small kiss to the corner of his mouth. Hermione had been ready to just leave, without a second thought, when she remembered where she was and why she was here! Wide-eyed she looked up at him. "Oh! Ron! I almost forgot all of my work!" The mere thought made her sick! All that work, lost. "Let's hurry," she said as she grasped his hand, turning out of his embrace. Hermione simply tugged him along to her table. "I can't believe I almost forgot this. Do you know what could have happened?" She asked, finally voicing her inner thoughts.

Tidying up her spot she gathered her things in hand and turned to him. "Now we can go home," she said with a small smile. "I'll see you at home," she said just before she disapparted back to her flat.

Ron couldn't help but grin as Hermione darted off to fetch her work. It was doubtful she would ever leave him for another man at this point; she didn't have enough time. He'd be competing against her job. He let himself be tugged along back towards the table, thought about offering to help her carry all her stuff. There were a lot of papers, though, and she seemed to have them better organized then they would end up being if he got his hands on them. He rolled his eyes.

"I'm sure they'd be right here, where you left them. Unless someone caught a glimpse of your work and stole everything!" He was being sarcastic, of course, but he couldn't help but wonder if maybe she actually worried about those kinds of things.

Home, home, home. I'll see you at home. Ron stood in the library alone for a few seconds, trying not to get worked up with the thought of it all. He scolded himself internally for being so weird about the whole thing, and then he apparated too.

He landed on the steps outside Hermione's flat. He thought about knocking on the door, but decided to try the handle instead. It was open. He stepped inside, looking around. "Hermione?"

Hermione just knew that someone would have stolen her work and then tried to pass it off as their own! It would have been devestating to her. ANd probably not something that would have truly happened. The fear of that happening, though, was very real to her. In her head.

It was strange how quickly they fell into that pattern. How quickly Hermione had, really. She had talked about home as though that had always been where Ron had been. As though he truly belonged there. It had happened without much thought. But back in her own flat, with Crookshanks meowing loudly at her, she was considering the weight of her words. She had essentially made up her mind, hadn't she? As independent as she was she was the idea that Ron could come and go as he pleased was an appealing idea.

Hermione scooped up Crookshanks and held him close to her chest, stroking his head. It was then she heard Ron's voice. Leaving her back bedroom she came into the front room, leaning against the wall. "Hi," she said simply. Why was she suddenly feeling so shy around him?

"Hey." Ron tried to look casual, leaning against the door with his hands stuffed into his pockets. He hadn't been back in this apartment since their last date. Or their first date, really. He eyed the spot on the wall where they had been when he had first kissed her. That had been a good night. Lots of cake. Less big orange angry cat. Ron had been all set to go forward and meet Hermione until he noticed she had not come out alone. He eyed Crookshanks suspiciously. Ron and the cat had never quite gotten along, even after they had discovered the truth about Scabbers.

Ron wondered if maybe she had bought her pet out as some kind of shield. She was back to being quiet, acting strange again. Ron sighed, pushed past her and the cat beast into her bedroom, and put the small package of lingerie on her dresser top. Then he returned to the main area, taking off his jacket and tossing it across the back of a nearby chair. He felt more comfortable now, not as hot. It was awkward to walk around with women's knickers in your jacket pocket.

"D'you want to, umm, talk? About what's bothering you?" Ron was terrible at this and he knew it. "So it can not bother you anymore."

Hermione was words. Ron was feeling. There were often times that Ron wore his heart on his sleeve. In those moments it left no doubt in Hermione's mind how he was feeling. And right now it was obvious that he was uncomfortable. It also appeared that Crookshanks was now feeling a bit antsy, trying to swat at Ron as he walked by to her bedroom. "Crookshanks! Naughty boy!" Her own hand was trying, in vain, to keep his paw down. It only seemed to aggrivate him more.

"Oh honestly, can't you just get along with him?" She asked the cat in an exasperated voice. Not wanting to wrestle with him anymore she let him jump from her arms as she knelt down. It was then that Ron had come back into the room. From her position on the floor she glanced over her shoulder at him.

Crookshanks forgotten she stood up, brushing off her jeans. "Oh, right. Well, it would probably be best, really." It gave Hermione that warm and fuzzy feeling to know that Ron was even willing to try and talk to her. "Maybe we should sit down," she said, motioning to the couch.

Ron didn't know if it would be best to talk. He could barely believe that they had been dating for such a short time and already they were sitting down to have their first talk. He didn't like talking very much; this was Hermione's department. He really did want to make her feel better, but he wished he could do it in a way other than talking. He took small relief in knowing that he hadn't actually done anything wrong this time. He was perfectly content to blame Ginny for anything that happened.

Ron checked that Crookshanks had wandered off into the other room before moving past Hermione towards the couch, brushing against her as he went. He plopped down unceremoniously and waited for her to join him. Now that he was actually in the position to be talked to, he felt suddenly nervous. He coughed to clear his throat and looked at is girlfriend's face expentantly, then quickly away.

"So um. What's going on?"

Looking at the situation objectively Ron really wasn't in trouble. It was more Hermione was slightly mental after letting her thoughts get way ahead of her.

A brow arched at him as he brushed past her. Her skin tingled where he touched. How Ron could make such small contact with her and still elicit that emotion from her was puzzling. Hermione followed him, sitting down close enough to him that when she tilted her body towards him her knee rested against his leg.

Merlin she was torturing him. The faster she had this talk with him the faster it would be over. She begn to pull at the crease her jeans made at her knee, watching that intently. "It really just stems from the conversation I had with your sister. It's not her fault, really. I just don't necessarily enjoy the idea that there is the potential for you to be thinking of someone else, Ron. Especially if, well, there is something happening." Her eyes looked up at him. "And don't try to tell me that you wouldn't react the same way if you thought I was thinking of someone other than you." She sighed. "I know that I'm not like most girls, Ron. I'm not what most people call beautiful and, honestly, it's something I am okay with. There is so much more for me to be worried about. Worrying over my hair is the least of my problems." Hermione wondered if she was really even making any sense.

Hermione really was torturing Ron, but not quite in the way she thought. Her talk was sure to be awkward and he definitely still wished it didn't have to happen, but he was so distracted now by her close body, by her knee touching his leg and the way her fingers just couldn't seem to keep still.

She wasn't make sense, not to Ron. He didn't know why she was suddenly worried, why she thought that there could possibly ever be anyone else he would be thinking about. It kind of hurt him to know that she was worried about that kind of thing. Didn't she know what he was feeling this days? Why couldn't she just tell?

Ron sighed before reaching out and taking her hand in his own. The concept of her thinking about someone else, anyone else, especially while they were together, was enough to make him violent. He had to admit that maybe he understand what she meant, but why was she worried? Her closing statement made him drop her hand and look at her in surprise. He looked at her for a moment, more intently then he had in a while, and then he shifted his body so he was facing her completely. Ron leaned forward and cupped Hermione's face in his hands, getting so close that his nose bumped against hers.

"Hermione, I think you are the most beautiful girl in the whole world." It was possibly the sappiest thing he had ever said, but he meant it and it seemed like Hermione just really needed to know that.

Hermione was completely oblivious to the way her own touch made Ron feel. For at least the time being. There were times that she knew, but in a moment like this she couldn't have been more unaware of how distracting she was being. She simply needed the close proximity.

Her thumb moved slowly over his when he took her hand. She knew that Ron must have thought she was mental. And for the first time in a really long time Hermione realized that Ron didn't have the emotional range of a teaspoon. He was actually quite good at this. Whether he knew it or not.

When he took her face in his hands she shut her eyes. It was in that single moment she realized how foolish she had been. His words only confirmed it for her. Her eyelids felt heavy as she opened them to look at him and at the same time her hands came up to grasp his wrists.

"You're always surprising me, did you know?" This was one of those moments. "I don't want to fail, Ron. What happens if I fail?" The root of the whole problem.

Ron did not let go of Hermione's face. He just closed the gap between their faces by placing a quick kiss on her lips. Failure. He knew quite a bit about that kind of thing, but he didn't want to admit that the thought of failing in this relationship was more troubling to him than anything else had ever been.

"You won't fail, Hermione! We're supposed to be together, I think. Don't you .. feel it?" Well, it was official. Ron could never show his face to his brothers ever again. He tried to lighten the mood, to get rid of the heavy feeling he got in his chest when he thought seriously that way. "You know you can just hex me if I get out of line. I'm sure if anyone could cast a spell to control someone's thoughts, it would be you."

Her grip tightened on his wrists, reveling in the quick kiss. Hermione appreciated his confidence and patience.

It was shocking. It was like someone had poured a huge bucket of ice water on her. Ron had just admitted to her that he felt like they were meant to be. It seemed a silly, fairytale-like fantasy, but so solid and real that it was hard to not believe. "Of course I feel that way. I've felt that way for ages, Ron. But that's the scary part. What if ..what if we feel like this and something awful happens? We could never go back." She bit down onto her bottom lip, wishing she could rid herself of these thoughts.

"I've never been more certain about anything." That was saying something. "But I can't stand the thought of losing you to someone else."

For the life of him, Ron just couldn't figure out what Hermione was so worried. He knew what it all meant, he too had come to the 'we can never go back' mentality, but as far as he was concerned it was better to go forward than to stay the way they had been. He didn't want to go back, not after this. He studied her carefully, watching her bit her bottom lip and decided, much as he had done the last time they were in her flat together, that she was simply too far away from him.

In one swift motion Ron leave forward and scooped Hermione onto his lap. He had his auror training to thank for his honed sense of balance, something almost resembling grace, but not quite. Now that she was where he wanted, he took a moment to shift underneath her until he found a comfortable position. He folded his hands together over her stomach and pulled her against him, resting his chin on her shoulder.

He kissed her neck once, twice before speaking. His voice came out lower and more urgent than he had intended. "There was never anyone but you, 'Mione. There won't ever be. You won't lose me, I promise."

The concern that she would lose him to someone else may have been silly, but a founded concern. It had seemed, to Hermione, that every last time she tried to move forward with Ron something went wrong. Something came up, someone came up. Now that she was here, invested, she knew she could never return to the way things had been. Forward was good, and she wanted to make sure that this was truly going to go that way.

A surprised 'oh!' passed her lips as he moved her.Like many times before Hermione was grateful to the Auror training that Ron had recevied. She relaxed herself into him, drawing patterns on his arms slowly.

Her head lolled to the side, allowing him a better access to her neck. There was something in his voice that caused the butterflies to settle in her stomach again. There were still so many questions that she wanted to ask, but instead she enjoyed the moment. "I adore you," she whispered softly.

Ron was having a hard time with the notion that there would be enough girls clamoring after him to pose a threat to Hermione. He was not conventionally handsome. Too tall, too lanky (though he had traded some of that in for muscle in the last year or two) and too ... red. His hair was too messy, he got flustered too easily, there were freckles dusting his nose and his shoulders. He'd been awkward in school and it was preposterous to think things were much different now. Hermione, on the other hand, was quite different from her school days. Not in personality, exactly, but in appearance. Her hair was curly instead of bushy, her face had grown up, and she was even wearing small touches of makeup these days. If she couldn't already tell that he wanted her, that he thought she was beautiful, that he'd never choose anyone other than her, well, he didn't know how to make her see.

Ron kissed Hermione's neck again, a soft trail up her jawline. "You know it's me who should be worried, right?" He held her against him more tightly. Was that it? Could she really be done talking to him already? He had suspicions that she had more to say but he didn't want to ruin this.

Adore. That was an okay word. Ron was having trouble with words lately, especially words floating around in his head that he knew he was in no way ready to say. That didn't stop them from being there, of course, nudging at the edge of his brain like a persistent puppy wanting to go outside. Growing up in his family he'd heard the word love quite a bit. Even Lavender had told him that she'd loved him, but only in that way that teenage girls told everyone. He'd never said it back to her. Ron had never said it to any girl, actually, other than his mum. And maybe Ginny once or twice.

"I .. you too. Adore you too," Ron was mumbling again, trying not to hate himself for his emotional inadequacies.
