Alex ordered pizza from his phone, then headed to the store to get two cases of beer. It was probably excessive, but since it was something of a peace offering, he intended to leave whatever they didn't drink with Michael. With the beer stashed in the back, he went to get the pizza. It wasn't ready, so he sat in the wait area twiddling his thumbs for a few minutes. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes, his mind reliving the history of his relationship with Michael Guerin.
They'd met when they were just kids. Alex had offered the shed at the back of the Manes property for Michael to use so he didn't have to sleep in the back of his truck. He'd felt drawn to him even then, even before they were intimate. But of course Alex's dad had to go and ruin that, smashing Michael's hand and sending Alex halfway around the world into a warzone. He probably expected Alex would die over there, and if so he very nearly got his wish. But Alex hadn't died, and he was back in Roswell, back in the same town with Michael Guerin.
"Manes," the kid at the counter called, shattering Alex's trip down memory lane. He'd already paid, so he stood and took the pizzas with something of a dazed look and a hasty thanks, and headed out to his SUV. He wasn't far from Sanders Auto where Michael kept his Airstream, and though he had second thoughts, Alex found himself pulling up to the junk yard. He scanned the area, looking for that first glimpse of Michael. Things were awkward between them, tense didn't even begin to cover it, but the sight of that mop of curls and that cowboy swagger were and would always be the death of Alex.
