Fabian stiffened, rather fearful as the other boy took his arm but he kept looking straight ahead and nodded his head slightly, hoping the movement wouldn't be noticed.

"Yes, shall we go?" He whispered, hoping his Uncle would not be looking for him as he no doubt would spoil any plans by demanding to know who Fabian was with. "I'm Fabian, by the way."

"Thank you," he replied softly, smiling, very grateful this... Fabian didn't throw him off or shove him away or tell him to go away and that he wouldn't help. He then nodded and chanced a glance out of the corners of his eyes toward the creme-puff woman. She seemed to at least be momentarily halted, and he took that as his chance for escape, picking a direction completely opposite of her and steering himself and this boy in it. Casually, of course, so as not to attract too much unwanted attention or appear completely out of his mind.

"I'm Piper." He gave a friendly smile to Fabian. "It's very nice to meet you." He waited a beat. "At the risk of sounding banal, isn't it a lovely ball? Minus the beastly, creme-puff women, of course. It could definitely do without any of them."

"Piper? That's quite an unusual name, but then again I suppose I shouldn't really say that given what I was named." Fabian said, smiling back.

He wasn't terribly sure why the other young man wanted to escape so badly but he was more than willing to help. It was all rather exciting really. "It is, very nice. I've never been to anything like this before so it's quite an experience. I suppose you must go to balls all the time, mustn't you?"

"For what it's worth, I like your name," Piper said, nodding his head. "It's bean-man or something. You look like a bean man." He grinned. "Plus, I think it was the name of a few Roman Emperors and Saints." Just because he couldn't read didn't mean he couldn't persuade others to read things to him, and he enjoyed anything they wished to read to him. One man had even gotten it into his head to enlighten him with inane facts, which Piper had found interesting at the least.

Him? Attend balls all the time? He truly wished he did, but he wasn't about to say that. "I've attended more smaller scale parties and the like than full out balls," he replied, which, thankfully for him, was true enough. "And then the ones I do attend are usually during Christmas." Another truth For the most part. "Though I can say I can't recall ever attending one as extemporary as this one. What sort of events do you attend, if you do not mind me asking," he said, looking curiously at the boy, idly wondering the chances of coming across him at another function he was actually allowed to attend. It was nice to have someone who at least looked his own age and who he could potentially known on a level that had nothing to with his profession.

Fabian laughed. "Oh yes, rather a few Emperors and Saints. It's a family tradition to name a son after a Roman Emperor. My Uncle is Augustus, would you believe it?"

"I don't. That is to say I can't, normally. We only came to this one because the Hurst's live down the road and it seemed rude to decline." Fabian said. He'd rather been dreading this moment - when someone would ask him why he couldn't dance, or wasn't he going to drink something stronger and he'd have to explain to them about his nature. "I have a weak heart and my uncle fears too much excitement might be the end of me. I mustn’t dance, or have rich food or drink in excess, and I hardly go out so I'm not invited to these things you see."

"Actually, I would. Though if you were to tell me he actually believes himself to be Augustus, I might not believe you," he said, teasing lightly. "Then again, some people do believe themselves to be things they are not, like emperors, so perhaps it isn't too far fetched if he did."

Piper considered that for a moment, nodding softly. "Would it not be better to die from over-excitement from doing something you're enjoying than from wasting away, doing nothing, enjoying very little?" It made sense to Piper at least. He'd rather die doing something thrilling he enjoyed than because he atrophied in a house, doing nothing but being bored out of his mind. "Perhaps you have a weak heart because you do not go out often. Have you thought of that?" Another thing that made sense to him. "Although this does put a damper on any potential plans of asking you to come out with me should we have hit it off enough to possibly work toward a friendship," he said, though he sounded far less disappointed than his words may have hinted at.

"Oh no! He's a Judge. He's utterly sane and rather dry and dusty to tell you the truth." Fabian said, feeling rather wicked as he did.

"I'm not sure about that. What if I tried dancing, found I hated it and died in the middle of it? That would be simply tragic." He said, smiling a little at the other boy. "I have often wondered if going out a little might get my strength up, like you suggested but uncle won't hear of it."

"Friends?" He said a little surprised, but rather pleased with the idea. Then a though occurred to him. "We'd have to arrange it first, of course, but I'm sure Uncle wouldn't mind me going out with another young lord, although I’m not technically one yet. It's thrilling to meet someone my own age."

"Hm. But a judge can be an emperor of his chambers and the law in his own right and mind," Piper said conversationally.

"You would take it slow, of course. You have to walk before you can waltz, after all. You would start of slow so as not to completely over-excite things and to discover if you had the patience or desire to learn more. If you did not have the want, there would be no problem." He smiled and leaned closer, softly saying, "I could teach you if you wanted, though obviously not here.

"And I'm sure we could arrange something," he said. His brain darted around, trying to think of ways to arrange such a thing. He nodded confidently, even though he couldn't be sure the few ideas dancing around in his head would even work. He raised his wine glass in his free hand and said, "To a new friendship."

"Teach me to dance? I'd be flattered if you would." Fabian said, smiling shyly at the boy. He thought it was a little unorthodox - two men to dance together- but he wouldn't want to begin with a young woman and disappoint her.

"To a new friendship." Fabian echoed, raising his glass as well and he took a small sip of the wine. He didn't want to finish it all too quickly. He knew he shouldn't have another glass after this one.
