She had known Angélique was going to wear something shocking, she draped herself in so many jewels on top of that there was so mistaking her for anything other than aristocracy. Patience wasn't sure why her dear cousin felt the need to always be on show like she was now, but maybe Angélique liked to make waves and be the talk of society.

Although when she’d passed groups Angélique had been frequenting she’d heard her own name in more than a few whispers.

“My dear,” She said, crossing to her cousin’s side. “You are quite the little gossip.”

Patience always looked so... simple. Subdued. One could hardly tell she was attending a ball rather than a dinner among aquaintances. Why did everything here have to be so much -less- than home? Angélique loathed it, and prayed again that she could soon join her grandfather or aunts on the continent. Every letter she received from Vienna or Naples sent her nearly to despondency.

"And you, dear cousin, look stunning. You always have the most adorable things," Angel said with a radiant smile, which faded into a hurt gasp. "I do hope you aren't blaming me for half of London seeing you assaulted on a busy street. By the time someone asked me about it, there were rhumors you had been stabbed, ravished, and run away to a convent- possibly after a failed elopement," Angel said with a pained look in her blue eyes. It was true enough- someone had certainly beaten her to telling everyone about Patience's encounter, although their version had been apparently rather more elaborate. She took Patience's hand. "I am sorry. I do know it was naughty to speak of it all without your express permission but I only thought it better to say what really happened than let the wilder speculation continue."

"A failed elopement? Ravished?" Patience said, much more horrified to hear there were rumours about her virtue than that she might have been stabbed. A stabbing was hardly fatal to ones social standing, only ones life. "Whoever could have come up with such a story? I'm so sorry my dear for calling you a gossip. You were right to tell them the truth of the tale. I wouldn’t want anyone to think I’d tried to elope!"

"I told them as much, coz." Angel took Patience's arm and smiled reassuringly. "It is just not in you to be so scandalous and I haven't any idea who would say such outrageous things. No, I think it was more a matter of who you were with," she said and lowered her voice. "I fear the Laurents were somewhat... looked down on in Versailles and it made them the target of some wretched gossip. Nothing true of course," she lied smoothly and even managed to look sad about it. She had been a tad livid with the outrageous gossip- it was such a stupidly contrived rumor for one and in any case, subtlety was much more amusing.

"I am glad you forgive me. Now you shan't have reason not to help me plan the ball papa has decided to allow me to give next month!"

"Looked down on?" Patience said, rather worried then. She could hardly be seen with a family who had a bad reputation, even if it might be one only known of in France. After all, Angélique knew of it and she was family. "What sort of gossip, Angel?"

"Another ball!" Patience said, perking up immediately at the thought of it. "Oh how delightful. I will certainly help you!"
