Reuben had been invited, although he had no idea why. The closest he had ever been to a gathering of this sort was once, at Judge Burnbridge's house, when he had stayed late to help Fabian with his Latin, and by the time he left the Judge's dinner guests were already enjoying pre-dinner drinks. He had left by the servant's door, not wishing to intrude.

Here, now, he felt like an intruder. Without his cassock, he seemed to have no identity, and so he stayed close to the drinks table, topping up his courage, lest he was spoken to.

Spotting Sebastian, however, sapped everything from him; the colour from his face and the breath from his lungs, causing him to choke on his wine. Drawing attention to himself was the last thing he wanted to do, but the coughing fit seemed to be drawing a lot of attention from the guests.

Sebastian glanced over to see how was making that dreadful noise, and then fought to keep the surprised from his face. He waited a few moments until the man had calmed himself before making his way across the room, not wanting to draw attention to them.

"No wonder this party is so dull." He commented dryly, pulling his handkerchief from a breast pocket and handing it to Rueben. "Clean yourself up."

It felt odd to see him here of all places.

Reuben didn't know what to say, taking the handkerchief and wiping his mouth with it, praying silently that something would happen, something, and Sebastian would go away. "Thank you." He managed, clearing his throat again, trying not to be attracted to the boy again. He had corrupted him, made the boy unclean, a sinner, and day after day he had tortured himself because of that foolish, wicked, uncontrolled lust. But Sebastian could not have done badly for himself, he was dressed well (much better than a parish deacon, at any rate) and was no doubt wealthy or important to be invited here. Reuben was merely invited as a parish representative. "I.... You've been well, Sebastian?"

"I am doing well, thank you. I have a job at the bank and it pays considerably better than one would expect." Sebastian said slowly, not really sure what he could say. He'd not expected to see Rueben again, ever. He thought he'd left that part of his life behind when he left the orphanage. "What are you doing here? I would have expected you to be at some seaside parish by now, unless you left the Church." Or were thrown out.

"Leave the Church?" Reuben said, in a close to horrified voice. Without the Church, he had nothing, no family, no education, no employment, no faith. Even without his cassock tonight he felt like half a person, a shadow of himself. "No, I haven't left. I work this parish. I'm deacon of the local Church." He explained, slightly embarrassed at his early tone, and now trying to sound casual, as if he belonged here.

"You landed on your feet." Sebastian commented dryly, looking around at Reuben's parishioners. The collection plate must be the richest in London. "It must be nice to come to this from such humble beginnings."

“I suppose you must be quite the catch to some of the young ladies here tonight.” He said, tone even. “Or is it young gentlemen you still prefer?”

Reuben couldn't help but choke again, surprised now by the young man's forwardness. He had not made the boy like this, had he, he had not ruined what had once been such a sweet, beautiful child and made him into... into this?

"I don't think this is the best place to discuss the past and old mistakes, Sebastian, I really don't think it's the time nor the place."

"I wasn't talking about the past," Sebastian said curtly. "I was simply asking if you were perusing a romance openly, or if it was something clandestine? I think I of all people should be allowed to ask."

Reuben shook his head, wanting to turn and run away, just as Daniel must have wanted to do when met with the Lions. "I'm not pursuing anything, Sebastian. I have my work and it keeps me very busy." He explains. "I'm sorry about... about what happened, but we were both young then and no harm was ever meant, no harm was ever meant."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow, not sure how he felt about Rueben dwelling on that time. True, it was hardly a grand moment for the man he was sure, but there had been a lot worse than Rueben there who’d done a lot worse things. Rueben had just taken affection to far.
“I’m sure you didn’t.” He said stiffly.

Reuben nodded, finishing off his glass of wine with much more speed then he was used to. "Good. Good. Best we all forget about it. Misadventures of youth..." He mumbled, refilling his glass. "Did not harm to anyone..."

"You were hardly a youth in your misadventures." Sebastian reminded him. "I was twelve and you were eighteen. I think far old enough to know better."

Completely unnerved by the words and the truth in them, Reuben did not reply, only swallowed the contents of his glass quickly, trying to concentrate on something, anything, else. "But there was no harm done." He managed, turning back to Sebastian. "You said, there was no harm done."

"I didn't say that." Sebastian said, angry now although he knew it shouldn't be at Rueben. Rueben had just been as lost and frightened as he had. That place had done awful things to him as well but Rueben was still part of it and deserved his anger.

Reuben stepped back, almost fell back, alarmed at the forcefulness of the boy's tone. "I...I..." He managed, but knew nothing else to say. It was all his fault, all of it. He had forced the boy, groomed him, and now Sebastian was ruined forever because of it. "Forgive me." He whispered.

"Why should I?" Sebastian muttered, aware that he did not want to draw attention to himself or Rueben.

That came as even more of a surprise. Why would someone not forgive another for something they were plainly sorry for? He stepped back a little again, as if worried Sebastian would lash out. "We were only young..."
